Former India wicketkeeper-batter Farokh Engineer believes teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has already done enough to earn an ODI call-up and wants the 15-year-old to open alongside Rohit Sharma ahead of the 2027 World Cup.
Engineer feels India should reshuffle their batting order by moving Shubman Gill to No. 4, allowing Sooryavanshi to partner Rohit at the top while Virat Kohli slots in at No. 3.
"The ideal situation is Shubman Gill and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. Gill is a class player. Gill, I think, is the best batsman in the team now. So, Gill should come at four," Engineer told PTI.
The former India star said the combination of a right-handed Rohit and left-handed Sooryavanshi would provide the ideal balance in ODI cricket.
"Gill is not a guy who lifts the ball. So, a left-right combination would be ideal in ODIs. So, if Rohit is playing, and I think he should be playing, let him open with Sooryavanshi.
"A batsman like him (Sooryavanshi) is much better at opening because he finds bigger gaps in the field. Virat Kohli can come third. Gill can come fourth and then we've got a solid batting line-up," he said.
Engineer's remarks come after Sooryavanshi enjoyed a breakthrough T20I series against Zimbabwe. The youngster finished as the leading run-scorer with 151 runs, including two half-centuries, and was named Player of the Series as India completed a 3-0 clean sweep.
According to Engineer, those performances are enough to fast-track the teenager into India's 50-over plans.
"This is probably the right time to draft Sooryavanshi into India's ODI side. I don't know why people distinguish so much between ODI and T20 because for me, a half-volley is a half-volley. He's been getting runs and he's got the confidence to open the innings.
"He'll win more matches for you than lose you. When he gives a start like that, the other players can have time to consolidate the innings and put on a big score," Engineer noted.
While Sooryavanshi struggled during India's T20I tour of England earlier this month, the Zimbabwe series showcased his ability to adapt. He produced a measured 81 off 49 ***** in the final T20I on a slow Harare surface after blasting a rapid half-century in the series opener.
The teenager has also shown areas that still require improvement, including handling short-pitched bowling, adapting quickly to overseas conditions and refining his shot selection. However, Engineer urged India not to overburden the youngster with technical changes, insisting his natural game is what makes him special.
"Anything which is slightly short of length, in Sooryavanshi's curve, is going to go for a six. He learned from his mistakes, he has learned to curb himself. But don't try to over-coach him. He's not from the MCC book of manual, which is completely out of date.

Boxer Jai Opetaia has started legal action in the United States to force the IBF to hand back the cruiserweight world ****** le.
The Australian claims the sanctioning body acted unlawfully when it stripped him of his belt following his first fight with promotional outfit Zuffa Boxing.
Opetaia filed a lawsuit in the US District Court for the District of Nevada seeking to have his ****** le reinstated, recover damages and legal costs, and prevent the IBF from naming another cruiserweight champion while the litigation continues.
The IBF declined to comment, with a spokesperson telling BBC Sport: "We will release a statement when it is appropriate."
The 19-page complaint - obtained by BBC Sport - claims rival governing bodies have discouraged champions from facing him, citing David Benavidez's decision not to pursue a fight after Opetaia was stripped and alleging the WBC threatened to strip Noel Mikaelian if he agreed to face the Australian instead.

The WNBA's 3-point contest field is officially set.
The league announced the six contestants for the 3-point contest on Friday during All-Star weekend on Tuesday afternoon. Bridget Carleton, Azzi Fudd, Natisha Hiedeman, Rhyne Howard, Marina Mabrey and Janelle Salaün are set to compete in the event.
According to USA Today's Meghan L. Hall, Caitlin Clark, Kayla McBride and Sabrina Ionescu were all invited to participate but declined. Specifics there are not known.
Ionescu won the 3-point contest last season, and is one of only two multi-time winners in the event's history.
Mabrey and Howard will enter as the favorites in the 3-point contest after what's been a dominant shooting start to the season. The program signed Spain native Max Gaspa Ibanez from the Baxi Manresa team in Spain's professional Liga Endesa.
He fills a roster spot vacated when Bradley's projected starting point guard, Georgi Gerganov, suffered a season-ending knee injury during summer workouts.

One of the most fun aspects of covering a World Cup for me is witnessing the jovial and inclusive celebrations by fans from so many different countries. With my own country being a host nation, it’s been great to see more Americans getting to join in and appreciate the unique vibe that makes the World Cup such a special experience. The Norway fans are one of the groups that have really become a sensation with their Viking row performed by dozens or hundreds of red-clad fans at once. As soon as I knew Norway was going to play in Miami, I started watching social media for any sign of a planned gathering. When an announcement popped up about two Viking rows in Miami Beach the day before Norway's quarterfinal loss Saturday to England, I knew I wanted to cover it.
I wasn’t really sure what to expect, but I knew it would likely be crowded and chaotic. I packed two cameras and a variety of prime lenses, ranging from a 14mm to a 135. The first row of the day was attended by Miami Beach officials. The crowd was dense, particularly with spectators, but I was able to climb up on a city fire truck to get wide shots of fans rowing along with the mayor.
After the afternoon row, I stuck around a few hours for the evening row, hoping it would give me a chance for different shots and maybe some nice evening light. As the time approached, the crowd got tighter and tighter without it being clear where the center would be. With hundreds of Norway fans ready to participate and hundreds of spectators crushing in around them with cellphones raised, I realized it was going to be a struggle to get a position on the ground where I could make a picture that conveyed the scale of the crowd or put them in the context of Miami Beach.
As the chanting began, I decided my other strategy was the better option, and slowly worked my way back out of the dense crowd, circling around to a building I had spotted earlier. Some fans who were staying there let me go up to the roof with them and from there I was able to shoot wide shots, showing the fans filling Ocean Drive, with palm trees and the beach behind, as well as tighter shots of them performing their chants and rows.

Czech youngster Linda Noskova recovered from missing five championship points to beat her friend Karolina Muchova and win an extraordinary and dramatic Wimbledon final.
Noskova looked on course for a routine victory when she led 6-2 5-2 - but crumbled with the finishing line in sight as 10th seed Muchova won five games in a row to force a decider.
However, the 21-year-old showed remarkable resilience to reset and finally clinch a 6-2 5-7 6-3 victory.
Noskova's second-set collapse was excruciating to watch for the 15,000-strong crowd on Centre Court, but the way in which she mentally reset in the decider was admirable.
Serving for the ****** le again an hour after her first attempt, Noskova hit an ace to set up a sixth championship point and converted it with a service winner.

When the city of Cincinnati was founded, the Passenger Pigeon was so numerous that a passing flock could blot out the sun. By 1907, the entire species was reduced to a single bird, residing at the Cincinnati Zoo. Tonight, offense faced a similar extinction, felled by merciless pitching.
Brady Singer, the Cincy starter, sent his foes down in order in the first on just 12 pitches; Jesús Luzardo, not to be outdone, did it in five. Singer allowed a hit (double, Bryson Stott) in the second, but incurred no further damage. “I was just like panicking, ‘What am I going to do?’” the sixth-seeded Fritz said. “I just didn’t expect it at all.”
In the end, there was nothing he could do.
Zverev's serve and the pain in Fritz's knee were too much to overcome as the last American man left in the singles tournament lost 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 on No. 1 Court on Wednesday.
