The New York Mets are having a nightmare 2026 season, as many of their best players have gotten hurt, with Juan Soto and Francisco Lindor, along with Francisco Alvarez, Luis Robert Jr., and Jorge Polanco, all missing significant time.
While Nolan McLean has been good this season, overall, the Mets are a disaster. Now, the Mets are likely to be trade deadline sellers. The only question left is how far the Mets go.
Jim Bowden of The Athletic is predicting that the Mets are MLB's "most likely" team to conduct a fire sale this summer and tear this team down to the studs.
"I will go with the New York Mets as the team most likely to do the most selling at the trade deadline," Bowden writes.

Earlier this week, Manchester City announced that Phil Foden had extended his contract with the club until the summer of 2030. It is clear that City are backing Foden to return to his dazzling best after two tough and trying seasons for him. New City manager Enzo Maresca is aiming to help Foden on that path and if he succeeds, it will help shape Manchester City into a formidable unit.
When Enzo Maresca faced the media yesterday for the first time as Manchester City manager yesterday, he said that he aiming to help Phil Foden return to his best form. The Italian manager added that it is his duty to do so. Speaking on Phil Foden, Maresca said: "I just want to help Phil to be the Phil we all want. First of all for him because he needs to enjoy football and second because I know how good he is. Phil in a good shape and mood, he can win games."
"Treble season he was fantastic, season after he won Player of the Year. He struggled a little bit, but I told him it's my duty to help him. He's from the house. He's from me. He's a City fan."
A big variable over the 2026-27 season for Manchester City is which Phil Foden they will get. Will the 2023-24 Player of the Season Foden return? The hope is that after a summer of rest this is what occurs. Or will Foden continue to be the inconsistent player he has been over the past two seasons? Foden is too good a player to not be a key player for the FA Cup and Carabao Cup holders. Hopefully the saying that class is permanent and form is temporary rings true for Foden this season.
Enzo Maresca is determined to help Phil Foden find his best once again. Maresca has worked with Foden previously, and that does give Maresca a template to use to guide Foden. He knows what makes Foden tick, and that should aid Maresca in his quest to help the England international. It seems that is what Maresca is determined to do as he explained yesterday.

The Phillies have been plagued this season by lackluster production from their righty bats. As a whole, J.T. Realmuto (.648 OPS), Trea Turner (.684) and Alec Bohm (.657) have provided unsatisfactory offensive results.
While Turner's defense has been much maligned this season, he's turned his production around at the plate. Since June 15, Turner has posted an .886 OPS, picking up seven home runs and seven doubles. Realmuto has quietly been performing better recently as well, with an .818 OPS in July. And early-season trade acquisition Derek Hill has provided more value than expected, already worth 1.5 bWAR as a Phillie.
That leaves Alec Bohm out of the picture. While his numbers aren't as strong as his other right-handed teammates, there's strong evidence that a huge hot streak is inbound.
Bohm's numbers since June are lackluster, slashing just .244/.298/.421 in 42 games. Counting just July, Bohm is hitting .239/.311/.478, a little above league average by the measure of wRC+ (114). He avoids strikeouts well (16.9 K% since June) but doesn't walk much either (5.1 BB%). Most importantly, he's grounding out 50.4% of the time, limiting the amount of impact his swings can have.
That's significant, as his swings have had a relatively big amount of impact by measure of his batted ball statistics. During July, Bohm has been hitting the ball harder than he has all season:

Manchester United have signed goalkeeper Janina Leitzig from Leicester City for an undisclosed fee.
The 27-year-old becomes their second signing of the summer following the arrival of defender Andrea Medina.
It is believed the former Germany youth international has signed a three-year deal at United after they triggered the release clause in her Leicester contract, which was renewed in 2025.
Leitzig has been at Leicester for three years, initially on a season-long loan from Bayern Munich, where she became a regular starter.
She leaves having made almost 70 appearances in all competitions but could not save Leicester from Women's Super League relegation last season.

LSU football head coach Lane Kiffin was the main character of the offseason's coaching carousel. With Kiffin's Ole Miss team set for a College Football Playoff run, Kiffin accepted the LSU job, making an unprecedented move. Ole Miss promoted Pete Golding and Kiffin didn't coach Ole Miss in the playoff.
Kiffin's exit was messy. Rumors about Kiffin's future swirled for weeks as Ole Miss was in the midst of an historic season. Florida and LSU were both after Kiffin as Ole Miss offered its own contract extension. The longer Kiffin went without signing the Ole Miss offer, the more evident it became that he was leaving.
Kiffin's depature for one of Ole Miss's top rivals, LSU, created a complicated situation. Most of Kiffin's offensive staff was following him to LSU, but those same ***** istants stayed on to coach Ole Miss in the playoff. Kiffin wanted to coach the playoff and plead his case to Ole Miss AD Keith Carter, which only made the situation messier as it dragged on.
Speaking to ESPN on Thursday, Kiffin said he has some regrets about the way the saga played out.
"I wish I would have gone in when I met with Keith and said, 'I've made the decision to go,' I wish I would have just said, 'Hey, I'd like to coach the team,' and he'd say, 'No.' And I'd say, 'Hey, OK, I appreciate it.' [I wish I'd] move on [and] never even discussed it again," Kiffin said to ESPN.

GLASGOW, Scotland (AP) — The Scottish Football ***** ociation has handed new Rangers manager Derek McInnes a four-match ban for his critical comments about a disputed penalty that benefited Celtic in last season's ***** le race.
Then-Hearts coach McInnes had called the stoppage-time penalty decision “actually quite disgusting" after Celtic beat Motherwell 3-2 in the penultimate game to put it on course for its record 56th Scottish league ***** le.
On Wednesday, the Scottish FA issued the four-match touchline ban with one suspended until the end of the 2026-27 season.
Rangers responded by saying it would appeal the ruling.
“We do not believe Derek’s view on a match-defining decision amounted to an attack on the competence or integrity of match officials,” the Glasgow club said in a statement. “His comments were directed at the decision, rather than representing any broader criticism of officials. Considered fairly and in context, Derek’s comments did not allege bias, incompetence or dishonesty.

Walsall head coach Lee Grant says he is "not there yet" as far as strengthening the squad to his satisfaction before the start of the new season.
The Saddlers have brought in nine players with defenders Ryan Leak and Declan Skura the latest to arrive at the Pallet-Track Stadium this week.
Both started Tuesday's friendly defeat by Aston Villa, along with goalkeeper Jed Ward, midfielders Sven Sprangler and Isaac Moore and striker Andrew Dallas.
Grant is preparing for his first campaign in charge after replacing Mat Sadler in May and has promised Walsall will approach League Two with positive, attacking football.

Ed: A badge isn't just a tool for merchandise. Fans have so much emotional investment into a badge, a hat, scarf or a shirt which reminds you of that game, or that goal, or that person who you went to the game with. It's impossible to "evolve" aspects of the club which carry so much emotional weight without damaging one of the key bases of the fans' support. Of course, fans will keep on coming and loving the club as much as they always did, but it breaks a bond, and only adds to the harmful emotional detachment between the modern game and the football fans' memories.
Ian: I'd rather the crest remained the same, but I accept the argument for changing it. I think the crest vote should be open to all members and that there must be a "none of the above" option.
Matt: It's hard to say supporters are getting their say when the club came out and said this is happening whether anyone likes it or not. These new crests represent a simplified, **** genised version of everything that has ramped up post-Covid. I can already see the final product - a stripped-down version of a crest that is more caricature than representative of anything meaningful.

As the ultra-successful agent of Akron native LeBron James and many other NBA players, Rich Paul knows how to read the room, and it's an important quality to have as the James sweepstakes reaches three weeks in duration.
On the "Game Over" podcast Paul co-hosts with Max Kellerman, Paul acknowledged a reality of James' free agency. When James eventually chooses his next team, the other franchises vying for him — and their fan bases — will be left disappointed to varying degrees. In an apparent effort to preemptively soften the blow, Paul wanted to make it known neither he nor James have been "leading on" teams by intentionally creating false hope.
"We've done this purposefully that there's no leading on for anybody," Paul said during an episode of his podcast released on Monday, July 20. "I've had everyone from ownership to general managers and presidents of teams, they've all asked, 'Is there any more we should be doing? What else could we do?' So on and so forth, and it's been, 'No, you've done all you needed to do, and that's it, right?' So, there's no leading on for anybody in that capacity."
The Cavaliers, Miami Heat, Philadelphia 76ers and Golden State Warriors are widely considered the top contenders to win the James sweepstakes. The competition for James' services tipped off after Paul informed the Los Angeles Lakers on June 30 the NBA's all-time leading scorer would leave LA in free agency after spending the past eight seasons there.
Since then, speculation about which team the 41-year-old James will choose has been relentless. The guesswork has also extended to when James will render a verdict.

For the third straight season, the Florida State Seminoles will have a new starting quarterback, with all three coming from the transfer portal.
Ashton Daniels battled Kevin Sperry for the starting job during spring practice and was named the starter shortly after they wrapped up the 15 practices. Head coach Mike Norvell was asked about what he saw in Daniels that made FSU target him when he entered the transfer portal.
"Ashton Daniels is a guy that can really do it all," Norvell explained. "Ashton's got a great deal of experience throughout his college career, he's been put in a lot of different situations that he's had to work through. You see somebody that's just continued to grow."
Daniels started 23 games during his time with the Auburn Tigers and Stanford Cardinal and has played in 37. The veteran has improved each year, completing 60.2% of his passes for 4,783 yards, 24 touchdowns, and 22 interceptions. It was in a limited sample size, but he improved his interception rate from 3.3% at Stanford to 1.7% at Auburn.
Another thing that made him desirable for FSU was his ability to run and extend plays, while also being able to hurt teams with his arm. He has rushed for 1,397 yards and 11 touchdowns in his career.

Manchester United's Kobbie Mainoo has faced numerous challenges over the past two years.
After his fairytale breakout season in 2023/2024, he spent a significant amount of time injured during the following season and fell out of favour when Ruben Amorim replaced Erik ten Hag as head coach in November 2024.
Mainoo was often left on the bench and struggled to get any meaningful gametime under the Portuguese manager.
The midfielder was so unhappy with the situation that he was open to joining Italian side SSC Napoli on loan.
When Michael Carrick replaced Amorim as head coach in January of this year, Mainoo was immediately reinstated into the line-up and United's form improved, allowing them to finish third in the league.

NBC Sports Bay Area is losing another familiar face.
Carlos Ramirez revealed Sunday that he is leaving the regional sports network after four and a half years, making him the latest high-profile departure from the station in 2026.
“It’s hard to put into words what the past four and a half years meant to me,” Ramirez wrote in a post on X.
“I had the opportunity to fulfill a lifelong dream, working alongside some of the most talented people in sports media, and calling the Bay Area home.”
While Ramirez initially became a regular presence on the network’s San Francisco Giants pregame and postgame coverage, his role evolved in recent years as he took over as the primary host for the San Francisco 49ers’ studio programming.

If a recent transfer update from Sky Sports journalist Anthony Joseph is accurate, Celtic have offered Kelechi Iheanacho a new contract, with the Nigerian now training on his own after his Parkhead deal expired a couple of weeks ago. Twice, with the Detroit Tigers trailing the Philadelphia Phillies by three runs, Spencer Torkelson stepped into the batter's box at Comerica Park with an opportunity to spark the offense.
His first chance developed in the sixth inning Saturday, facing NL All-Star Game starter Cristopher Sanchez (11-4) with a runner at first and no outs. The 2020 No. 1 overall draft choice grounded into a double play, ending a possible threat.
In the eighth inning, with the bases loaded and no outs, Torkelson faced reliever Jonathan Bowlan and grounded meekly to shortstop Trea Turner, who allowed a run to score to initiate a double-dipper. The Tigers' six-game winning streak ended with a 4-2 defeat, along with some of the team's pre-All-Star break momentum.
On Sunday, with Riley Green on first base and no outs, Torkelson grounded into his third consecutive double play as the Tigers went on to lose, 5-0.

The dog days of summer have rightfully earned that nickname. The combination of conditioning workouts, practices, strength training and sweltering temperatures all endured with months still looming before the start of the men’s college basketball season can quickly turn into a monotonous grind.
Entering his second year in college basketball, Andrija Jelavic is experiencing it for the first time. This time last year, Jelavic was still in his home country of Croatia, finishing up school and finalizing when he could actually enroll and start practicing at the University of Kentucky.
That process wasn’t finalized until the fall. Now at Ohio State after one year with the Wildcats, Jelavic is getting an understanding of what he missed a year ago and how that impacted his season at Kentucky.
“This is my first summer of college basketball,” Jelavic said after a July 9 practice at the Schottenstein Center. “When I was late at Kentucky I didn’t feel like I was missing a lot, but being here for a month already I feel like it helps you a lot to be here. Now I understand that I missed a lot by not being there in the summer at Kentucky.”
It wasn’t until late August that Jelavic was able to start practicing with the Wildcats. When the season got underway, Jelavic was a rotation player for the first two months, briefly fell out of the playing rotation and then was inserted into the starting lineup for the final 20 games of the season.

As a sophomore, Darling secured 10.5 shutouts in goal for Mason. The Comets allowed just nine goals all season en route to a 14-1-3 record, and Darling's skills will only improve in his junior season.

Lazio are making important strides in their negotiations with Dutch defender Danilho Doekhi, but they also plan to resume Sergi Dominguez talks.
On Sunday, Italian journalist Matteo Moretto revealed that the Biancocelesti opened talks with the 28-year-old, who has become a free agent after seeing out his contract with Union Berlin.
A few hours later, transfer market guru Fabrizio Romano doubled down on the story, revealing that the two parties are making progress in their negotiations, and claiming that Lazio are confident about sealing the deal 'very soon'.
Reliable Italian journalist Alfredo Pedulla confirms that Doekhi could indeed join the Italian capital side, and might not be the only defender to arrive at Formello this summer. After all, Lazio sold Mario Gila to AC Milan, while Alessio Romagnoli is finalizing his transfer to Al-Sadd, so two new signings might be required to fill in for the departing duo.
As Pedulla explains, Lazio remain **** bent on recruiting Sergi Dominguez, who is still their priority target. Although the club's sporting director Angelo Fabiani couldn't reach an agreement with Dinamo Zagreb during last week's trip to Croatia, the source insists that the Aquile remain optimistic on this front, despite reports claiming that talks have collapsed.

Seven-time world champion Marc Marquez maintained his dominance at the Sachsenring circuit with victory in Sunday's German MotoGP.
The Ducati rider took Saturday's sprint race ahead of younger brother Alex and also qualified fastest for Sunday's race, which he controlled from start to finish.
The Spaniard was 1.996 seconds ahead of the rest of the field with Aprilia-Trackhouse duo Ai Ogura and Raul Fernandez taking second and third.
It is the 33-year-old's 13th victory on the German track, his 10th in Moto GP and it sees him equal two records held by Italian legend Giacomo Agostini for the most wins at a single event and the most victories at the same circuit in the premier class.
"I'm super-happy. It was a special weekend," he said. "I knew I needed to attack here to have any chance of winning the championship."

Argentina needed a late winner again on Saturday night. And Julián Álvarez provided a golazo.
Álvarez’s incredible strike from outside the penalty box in the 112th minute put Argentina up a goal in its 3-1 extra-time win over 10-man Switzerland. It was Argentina’s second extra-time win in three knockout-round games in this World Cup and the defending World Cup champions will face England in the semifinals on Wednesday.
Just watch the goal seemingly come from out of nowhere to beat Switzerland goalkeeper Gregor Kobel at the far post.
Álvarez’s goal came after Argentina spent the final 20-plus minutes of the second half and all of extra time with a man advantage after Breel Embolo’s controversial red card for simulation. But Switzerland’s defense had been absolute fantastic and denied Argentina time and time again when it had tried to work the ball inside the penalty area.
Of course, a 10-man defense in a low block can only stretch so far. You can tell that hardly anyone expected Alvarez to let loose from that position.

The Dodgers began their 2026 MLB Draft on Saturday by selecting Bo Lowrance, a high school third baseman from South Carolina with their first-round pick, and 40th overall in the draft.
By virtue of winning the World Series last year, the Dodgers owned the 30th pick in the first round this year. But by exceeding the third competitive balance tax threshold of $281 million in 2025 — they blew past it with a CBT payroll of $417.3 million and a tax payment of $169.4 million, both major league records — another penalty was their first selection in the draft dropping 10 slots to 40th. This also happened in 2022, 2023, and 2025 as well.
They used that 40th pick to take Lowrance, who has a college commitment to Virginia. The 6’5 Lowrance was ranked the 21st-best prospect by MLB Pipeline heading into the draft:
Lowrance has a smooth left-handed stroke and a track record of delivering against quality competition on the showcase circuit. He doesn’t try to do too much at the plate, making consistent contact to all fields despite naturally long levers with his 6-foot-5 frame and drawing comparisons to Freddie Freeman. He doesn’t lift and pull many pitches at this point, so he’ll need to add strength and make some adjustments to realize his 25-homer potential.

Former Chelsea chairman Ken Bates has died at the age of 94, the Premier League club have announced.
The Blues said in a statement that Bates had "passed away peacefully in Monaco this morning surrounded by his wife and family".
Bates famously bought Chelsea for just £1 in 1982 and oversaw the rise again of the Second Division after inheriting debts of £1.5m.
He would eventually sell the club to Roman Abramovich in 2003 for £140m, with the club back in the top flight in a move that would send the club towards an unprecedented period of success under the Russian billionaire. Bates remained as chairman for a spell, but soon stepped down in 2024.
Bates became the principal owner of Leeds United in 2005 after a deal to acquire 50 percent of the club and ran the club for seven years before its sale to GFH Capital in 2012.

Matias Soulé could leave Roma.
In June, the Giallorossi instructed the player's agent to find a club interested in the former Frosinone player willing to make an offer before the beginning of July in order to finalize the settlement agreement with UEFA.
Guastadisegno, the Argentine winger's agent, was clear on June 30: "I've received a lot of calls in recent weeks, I've spoken to several clubs, but no one has actually come forward, so we're not going anywhere. Soulé is an ******* et to Roma, and if someone inside is spreading such rumors, it will only harm Matias, an exemplary professional who has given everything to this club."
Soulé could move to the Premier League. As reported by Corriere dello Sport, the player's agent is in England negotiating with Sunderland and Fulham, two clubs that have expressed interest in the Argentine winger.
The former Frosinone player's book value is approximately €15.5 million, so a transfer of around €35 million would allow Roma to realize a capital gain of between €20 and €21 million. The Giallorossi are awaiting offers around these figures. These are crucial hours for Matias Soulé's future.

The St. Louis Cardinals are sending another player to the 2026 MLB All-Star Game. After Los Angeles Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani withdrew from the Midsummer Classic because of knee irritation, Cardinals designated hitter and catcher Ivan Herrera was selected as his replacement, giving the 26-year-old the first All-Star honor of his MLB career.
It's a well-deserved recognition for one of the National League's most productive offensive catchers, and it gives St. Louis another representative during what has been an encouraging first half of the season.
Herrera's path to becoming an All-Star hasn't been the smoothest. Signed by the Cardinals as an international free agent out of Panama in 2016, Herrera steadily climbed through the organization's farm system before making his major league debut in 2022. While his bat consistently showed promise, injuries limited his ability to establish himself as an everyday contributor during his first few seasons.
That changed in 2026. Herrera has appeared in all 92 of the Cardinals' games entering Friday, providing much-needed durability while producing at the plate. He's slashing .249/.384/.395 with 11 home runs, 40 RBIs and an impressive .384 on-base percentage.

The Michael Edwards era at Liverpool is about to end.
