BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) — Killing endangered animals while logging a forest or building a dam would not be considered illegal unless the animals were specifically targeted, under a new interpretation of the Endangered Species Act by President Donald Trump's administration that marks a sea change in how the landmark environmental law is enforced.
A directive sent to U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service employees this week says imperiled animals or plants must be intentionally targeted for their killing to be considered illegal.
That's a sharp turnaround from past practice at the wildlife service, which historically held people liable even for accidentally harming protected species such as grizzly bears, manatees and spotted owls.
Experts said the change would allow timber companies to log forests in the Pacific Northwest even if they knew that doing so could kill imperiled birds nesting in the trees, or for developers to build a dam knowing it would kill salmon.
"This cuts against the entire history of the Endangered Species Act," said Dan Ashe, who led the Fish and Wildlife Service under former President Barack Obama.

TOKYO (AP) — **** an's air force said one of its long-distance surveillance drones is believed to have crashed into the sea during a flight Tuesday off the country's northwestern coast.
There were no immediate details on the nature of the mission of the uncrewed RQ-4B aircraft, also known as Global Hawk. So far, there was no indication of foul play, but officials said the cause of the presumed crash was under investigation.
The Air Self-Defense Force said the drone had trouble connecting with a communication device about one and a half hours after taking off from the Misawa Air Base. Three minutes later, it disappeared from the radar and was last seen 50 kilometers (31 miles) off the coast of Tottori, the ASDF said.
Later Tuesday, a fighter jet and a **** an Coast Guard patrol ship spotted debris believed to be from the Global Hawk. After examining photos of the debris, the ASDF said the drone is believed to have crashed just after disappearing from the radar.
The cause of the Global Hawk's presumed crash is still under investigation, the ASDF said. There have been no reports of injury or damage related to the crash.

An Alaska teenager who survived nearly two days atop an overturned fishing skiff told his rescuers that his cousin had slipped away during the night and that his older brother remained beneath the vessel after the three were thrown into the frigid Bering Sea, according to rescuers and family members.
Derek Parker Aghnaanga, 15, was spotted Monday morning on the capsized skiff roughly four miles east of St. Lawrence Island after he, his 35-year-old brother Sidney Kulowiyi and their cousin disappeared during a fishing trip.

The previous 87-point record was set exactly two years ago, as South Alabama dropped a 87-10 victory over Northwestern State on Sept. 12, 2024. JMU's win, though, came with an even larger margin of victory, beating Wagner by a whopping 84 points.

What is expected to be a strong Kernersville Middle School baseball team opened its season Tuesday afternoon with a 20-1 rout of Northwest Middle School at the Ivey M. Redmon Sports Complex. The game was called on the 10-run rule after three innings.
At the plate, Colton McClendon led the team with four runs on two hits. He drove in the first two runs with a homer to left field in the first inning.
Carter Martin hit a two-run single, and Austin Newcomb followed with an RBI single. Cooper Forsyth and Aaron Thompson both hit RBI singles in the inning.

Kris Jenner's security team detained a man suspected of stalking her before he could reach her Los Angeles-area property.
Zenwilliam Robson, 25, was detained near Jenner's Calabasas-area residence on Monday, Sept. 7, after security personnel spotted him in the neighborhood. Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department deputies subsequently arrested him on suspicion of stalking.
Robson was ultimately charged with one misdemeanor count of trespassing and refusing to leave private property.
Jenner's security personnel told authorities that he had allegedly tried to contact the 70-year-old reality star and businesswoman several times before the latest incident.
The encounter happened Monday evening in the area surrounding Jenner's home in the Santa Monica Mountains northwest of Los Angeles.

According to the governor of the northwestern province of Sud-Ubangi, Jean-Rene Galekwa Vundawe, laboratory tests by Congo's national research institute found in a sample the Bundibugyo virus, the rare kind of Ebola that caused the current outbreak.
The statement, which was issued on Thursday and reported by local media outlets on Friday, said the sample was from the Bulu health district in Sud-Ubangi. It did not disclose other information about the source of the infection.
The development makes Sud-Ubangi the seventh province affected by the outbreak — and the first in western Congo — a worrisome spread west from what was previously concentrated in the country's east. A case was detected in Kinshasa in May in a person who had traveled from eastern Congo, but the Congolese capital was not classified as an affected province.
As of Wednesday, 6,942 cases and 3,349 deaths have been reported, according to the latest government figures.

Once the ball kicked off at 9:15 p.m. vs. Miami Northwestern, the Hornets made their statement in their typical fashion.
Through a physical, defensive brand of football that results in a win.
Hawthorne defeated Miami Northwestern 16-12 Thursday night at Annie Mae Phillips Stadium to improve to 4-0 on the 2026 season and hand the Bulls their first loss of the season.
The tone of the game changed drastically after Hawthorne QB and 2025 All-Area Small School Player of the Year Richard Roundtree suffered an ankle injury on the first drive.

MORRAL — Forget beating a rival in a Northwest Central Conference match. Elgin was just happy to be back on the volleyball court.
The Comets hadn't played a match in 12 days and just once in the last 18. Still, Elgin showed very little rust Thursday, Sept. 10, at Ridgedale, winning in three sets 25-19, 25-13, 25-21.
"They were ready to just get back on the court and not against each other," Elgin coach Caitlin Gracely said.
It was a scheduling quirk and not by design, she said, as a couple matches had to be moved to later in the season. Thus, they had a long layoff just days after the start of the 2026 season.
"I'm thankful for the break being in the beginning and not in the middle (of the season). That's the only thing I can be thankful for. I did not like that," Gracely said. "You can't give them a bunch of days off. You give them all the time off and they just mentally check out. We do not want that."

An independent energy development company and a long-time manufacturer of wood products have signed an agreement to develop geothermal projects in Washington and Oregon.Hexagon Energy and Weyerhaeuser Co. on September 10 said they have closed a deal covering that could provide an estimated 3 GW of geothermal power generation capacity in the Pacific Northwest. The land is part of Weyerhaeuser's portfolio of holdings. The early non-conference season continues to bring a mixed bag for Northwestern (2-3). At one moment, it seems to thrive and have its way, and at others, it seems lost.
That's exactly what the 'Cats trip to Starkville looked like last week, handing Alabama (3-1) its first loss of the season before being dispatched by Mississippi State (4-1). These contests showed both sides of the coin when it comes to Wildcat volleyball.
Let's not waste time. Here are your three major takeaways from the weekend.
It's Lauren Dignan's time. She donned the libero jersey in both contests this week. That's not to say Drew Wright or Gigi Navarette will be tossed aside, but its clear that Tim Nollan believes in who he's recruited as the future of that position. 2025 was her year to learn the machine, 2026 is her year to take the wheel.
The Mara Štiglic-Bella Bullington partnership is starting to settle into place. Štiglic led the team with 36 kills while Bullington followed with 26. On August 5, Clear Secure (NYSE:YOU) reported second-quarter results that hit almost every mark investors watch: revenue, bookings, margins, and cash flow all moved in the right direction. The company even raised its full-year free cash flow target. But buried in its own forecast for the current quarter is a hint that the breakneck growth pace investors have gotten used to may be starting to ease.
Clear's core numbers left little to complain about. Revenue reached $277.8 million in the quarter, up 26.6% from a year earlier, while Total Bookings climbed 32.8% to $295.9 million, a figure management treats as a leading indicator of where revenue is headed next. That growth came from a membership base that keeps expanding: Total CLEAR Members hit 43.5 million as of June 30, up 30% year over year, and Active CLEAR+ subscribers reached 8.3 million, up 15.2%. The company also kept widening its physical footprint, launching CLEAR+ lanes in Northwest Arkansas and Indianapolis during the quarter to bring its airport count to 62, alongside 280 retail locations offering TSA PreCheck enrollment. Its newer eGates technology is now live in 50 airports as of August 5, with a network-wide rollout still targeted for later this year, and its premium Concierge service has expanded to 39 airports.
Profitability climbed even faster than revenue. Operating income hit $83 million, a 29.9% margin, while Adjusted EBITDA reached $101.1 million at a 36.4% margin, an expansion of 900 basis points from a year ago that pushed the company past its own 35% long-term target. Free cash flow of $189 million for the quarter gave management enough confidence to raise its full-year free cash flow guidance to at least $480 million, up from a prior floor of $465 million, implying growth of at least 39.9% for the year. The board also declared a quarterly dividend of $0.15 per share, payable September 24 to shareholders of record as of September 10 on top of $22.2 million already returned to shareholders during the quarter.

Sep. 6—While many people across the state were paying attention to a certain college football game in Seattle, fans of the Spokane Indians had one last chance to see their "boys of summer" play at Avista Stadium on Sunday.
And though the chance at a postseason appearance evaporated a while ago, that didn't damper anyone's enthusiasm on "fan appreciation day" at the ballpark — not the 4,974 in the stands nor the players on the field.
Robert Calaz clubbed two long home runs to continue his torrid late-season hitting prowess and the Indians handled the Everett AquaSox 10-4 in the finale of the 2026 Northwest League regular season.
"(Starting pitcher Yuma) Herrera did a great job on the mound," manager Tom Sutaris said. "We came out swinging the bats. It was a really, really good start. We got good pitching, and it was a fun one."

The torch has officially been passed. The glorious era of the Allen family's ownership of the Seattle Seahawks has officially come to an end. In the week leading up to the season opener, ownership transferred from the Paul Allen estate to the Khosla family. This was inevitable following the NFL's approval in late August of the record $9.6 billion dollar sale Vinod Khosla put forth.
Now, Vinod and his family are in charge of the Seahawks. Vinod himself carries the ****** le of Chair of the Seahawks. His wife Neeru Khosla is now designated as the Controlling Owner of the Seahawks, and President of their Charitable Foundation. Their son, Neal Khosla, is the Vice Chair of the Seahawks.
But we at Seahawks Wire would be remiss if we did not acknowledge the legacy of Paul and Jody Allen, and what they gave to both the Seahawks franchise and the Pacific Northwest. Under their leadership, they helped transform the Seahawks into a national, championship caliber brand. Paul saved the city from being relocated to the Los Angeles area under the previous ownership of Ken Behring. Part of his purchase agreement included the Washington state legislature to hold a statewide referendum on funding a new stadium, which passed, paving the way for the iconic Lumen Field.

A proposal to move the Chicago White Sox from Rate Field in Bridgeport to a new riverfront stadium in the South Loop is drawing mixed reactions from fans and elected officials as the team considers the concept as a potential future ballpark site.
Developer Canal Edge recently unveiled renderings for "The Railyards," a proposed mixed-use development near Roosevelt Road and Canal Street that would include a possible new home for the White Sox, along with residential, commercial and retail components and an outpatient care center for Northwestern Medicine.
The proposal remains in its early stages.
Fans attending a game at Rate Field expressed differing views on the possibility of relocating the team.
"Don't love it. Let's keep it where it is. We don't need the Sox moving. We don't need the Bears moving," White Sox fan Hannah Harris said.

Florida-headquartered ONE Nuclear Energy said the company has executed a binding letter of intent (LOI) that would provide site control for development of Project Cayman, a 2.88-GW gas-fired power plant and 700-MW/2.88 GWh battery energy storage system (BESS) sited alongside a data center complex.The LOI was signed with what One Nuclear in an August 31 news release called a "prominent Louisiana landowner group." The company said the strategy aligns with Louisiana utility Entergy's continuing buildout of regional electricity transmission infrastructure."Project Cayman, with its 2.88-GW power capacity, demonstrates that One Nuclear is committed to supporting the future economic development of one of Louisiana's most important industrial regions," said Richard Taylor, CEO of One Nuclear. "The project will deliver the reliable energy needed to support new investment, create jobs, expand the local tax base and generate additional funding for community priorities and critical infrastructure."
Project Cayman is located near the RiverPlex MegaPark, a 17,000-acre heavy industrial site on the west bank of the Mississippi River in Ascension Parish, Louisiana. The location is northeast of ****** eX's recently announced $100-billion project to build its largest launch facility yet, called Starbase, Louisiana, in coastal Vermilion Parish. While the Detroit Lions are preparing for the 2026 season, the latest NFL rumors project that the team could lose one player. According to Dan Graziano of ESPN, the Lions have committed more than $1 billion to star players, including running back Jahmyr Gibbs, which leaves veterans Brian Branch and Sam LaPorta fighting for new contracts this upcoming season. Graziano does not expect a new contract to materialize before Week 1, but Lions general manager Brad Holmes expresses his desire to keep all star players from the 2023 draft class, including LB Jack Campbell, for a "long time."

Three attacks involving an animal that "displayed unusually aggressive behavior toward people," which can be ******* ociated with rabies, have been reported in New Hampshire, according to authorities. However, officials have yet to determine exactly what type of animal is ambushing the unsuspecting humans.
From Aug. 30-31, police received three reports of animal attacks in the same area of Lebanon, about 122 miles northwest of Boston, according to news releases from the Lebanon Police Department. The attacks seem to be unprovoked, and police believe the same animal is responsible.
Video shows the moment one person was attacked by the unknown animal. The wild animal is shown running from what appears to be a wooded area as the victim walks around a moving truck. The animal then goes after the person's legs in an unprovoked attack. It attacks the victim multiple times. The victim is seen flinging the animal away from them after it attacks their legs again, and then the animal returns to the wooded area.
