A Ukrainian soldier said troops may wait a week to move 300 meters at the zero line.
Drones make even small movements a life-or-death calculation, he told BI.
Fog, rain, wind, and electronic warfare can create brief windows to move.
Ukraine's drone-saturated "zero line" is so dangerous that troops may have to wait days for a safe chance to move just a few hundred meters, a Ukrainian soldier told Business Insider.
The soldier, who uses the call sign Yankee, said that he has experienced cases at the zero line, the forward edge of the front line, where "if you want to sometimes move 300 meters, you can't move for seven days."

Iran publicly hanged two young men Tuesday over their alleged roles in January's nationwide anti-government protests, as onlookers chanted "Dishonorable, dishonorable!" before security forces fired tear gas to disperse the crowd, according to the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), an exiled Iranian opposition group.
Abolfazl Sepahi Badjani and Amirhossein Safari Hosseinabadi were hanged Tuesday in Isfahan's Shahid Alikhani Square — where authorities alleged they committed offenses connected to the Jan. 8 protests, according to the NCRI and Iranian state media.
The NCRI said onlookers condemned the executions before security forces fired tear gas to disperse the crowd. The opposition group also said security personnel had been deployed on rooftops and surrounding streets.
Iranian state media also reported the public executions, Reuters said, with Iran's semi-official news agency Mehr saying they were carried out in Alikhani Square "in the presence of a group of people."

Burma's government approved the death penalty as punishment for internet scammers just months after the Fbi announced a sweeping $8 billion crackdown on scam networks coming from the country, according to the country's state-backed media.
The Anti-Online Scam Law passed the country's parliament on Tuesday, green lighting the death penalty for anyone who participates in a scam in which they "commit violence, torture, unlawfully arrest or detain, or treat any person in a cruel manner," according to The Global New Light of Myanmar, a media outlet jointly operated by a private company and the country's Ministry of the Interior.
Burma, also known as Myanmar, has become ground zero for digital scams, with criminals often recruiting migrants from other Asian countries with promises of legitimate work only to imprison them and force them to conduct the scams.
In May, the FBI announced a massive crackdown on a criminal network in Burma known as the "Democratic Karen Benevolent Army." The operation resulted in the seizure of 127,000 Bitcoin, worth over $8 billion as of July.

Screenwriter Russell T Davies has described the death of his husband to an aggressive brain tumour as his "greatest loss".
Speaking on the On the Marie Curie Couch podcast, the Doctor Who writer opened up about Andrew Smith, who died in September 2018, following eight years of treatment for glioblastoma multiforme.
The couple had been together for 20 years and married in 2012.
The Swansea-born writer, who was also behind Channel 4 shows It's a Sin and Tip Toe, said it was "hard work" looking after his late husband, but that he would have gone through it for another 50 years "without a single complaint".
Davies said he had not been with Smith at his appointment when he was first diagnosed because the couple thought it was just an "ordinary meeting" with the hospital.

Kim Kardashian's family is putting her relationship with Lewis Hamilton to the test.
"As hot as he and Kim are for each other, Lewis is still little more than a 'friend of the family' when it comes to the rest of the Kardashians," admits a source, adding that the reality TV star's sisters and momager Kris Jenner "still see this phase of the relationship as a trial period" and are "all testing how well Lewis fits in with the family dynamic."
Fortunately, the Formula One driver, 41, is no stranger to performing under pressure.
"Despite his undeniably dangerous, death-defying day job, Lewis has a calm, cool personality, especially compared to some of Kim's exes," the source reveals. "He's not an unhinged adrenaline junkie, not even close! He clearly lives by the motto 'never let them see you sweat.'"

A nine-year-old boy who "loved life and nature" was killed by his "unconventional, doting" mother who then took her own life, a coroner has concluded.
Hudson Paterson, nine, and Tasmin Paterson, 31, were found dead by her partner in a bedroom in a bungalow at Fletchersbridge, near Bodmin, Cornwall, in September 2024, an inquest heard.
Senior coroner for Cornwall Andrew ******* said Ms Paterson had argued with Marcus Hughes and had gone to bed "distressed" with the thought the relationship was coming to an end.
Cox concluded Hudson's cause of death was unlawful killing and, for Ms Paterson's death, recorded a verdict of suicide.
Hughes said the couple had been sleeping in separate rooms and when he went to wake them, he grew concerned as there was no response, so he called 999 and forced entry.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — First responders searched damaged homes and buildings on Tuesday for possible victims of a powerful tornado that carved a path of destruction through several northeastern Wisconsin communities.
The twister touched down in the Fox Cities region, which includes Appleton, Menasha and Neenah, at around 1 p.m. Monday and remained on the ground for more than 20 minutes as it cut a roughly 12-mile path of destruction through an area, the National Weather Service reported. It was nearly a mile (1.6 kilometers) across at its widest, and it destroyed homes and businesses, flipped cars and knocked down rows of power lines in the region, which is roughly 100 miles (160 kilometers) northwest of Milwaukee.
The timing — it blew in when most people were awake and after warnings had been issued — could be why there have been no reported deaths, authorities said.
"I think what helped us was it was during the week," Menasha Police Chief Matt Albrecht said at a news conference Tuesday. "Everybody was at work. It was the middle of the day. Most people were not at home and at their place of employment."
Authorities said a number of people were injured and treated at hospitals, but they didn't know exactly how many or how seriously.

Patrick Clancy, the father of three young children strangled inside their Massachusetts home, became the first witness Monday in his ex-wife's murder trial, offering jurors a harrowing account of the mental health decline he witnessed before their deaths.
He was the first witness called in the trial of Lindsay Clancy, who faces murder charges in the deaths of the couple's three children in January 2023. Prosecutors argue she acted deliberately, while defense attorneys contend severe mental illness drove her actions.
Patrick described watching his then-wife fall into a "big spiral" after she began taking Seroquel, testifying that she lost weight, became severely depressed and began expressing suicidal thoughts.
"Awful," he said when asked how Lindsay was doing physically after starting the medication. "That was really where her big spiral started. She started to lose a lot of weight, and she became very depressed, and she was having a really hard time."

Entries from early 2020 in a now-exposed personal diary kept by Dr. Anthony Fauci during the COVID-19 pandemic show that he privately estimated the death rate from the illness was significantly lower than what he told Congress under oath only weeks later.
Fauci, 85, has come under intense scrutiny for years regarding his approach leading the U.S. response to the coronavirus pandemic, and his alleged links to the Chinese lab where the virus originated. He will return to Capitol Hill on Wednesday before the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee to speak about his newly publicized personal records.
"The stated mortality over all of this when you look at all the data including China is about three percent. It first started off as two and three," Fauci said in testimony before the House Oversight Committee on March 11, 2020, according to a transcript of the hearing.
National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Director Anthony Fauci prepares to testify before the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee about the ongoing response to the COVID-19 pandemic in the Dirksen Senate Office Building on Capitol Hill on November 4, 2021, in Washington, D.C. Senators questioned Fauci and other witnesses about the approval of the Pfizer-BioNTech coronavirus vaccine for children between 5 and 11 years old this week.

Few things in life are certain beyond death, taxes, and Tadej Pogacar winning the Tour de France. This year's Grande Boucle went almost entirely as expected, offering few real surprises or diversions from the status quo, as the marauding Slovenian won another five stages en route to his record-equalling fifth ****** le.
His place in the pantheon of greats had already been cemented and there are few superlatives left to describe his grip on the sport. He is now equal with cycling legends in the form of Eddy Merckx, Jacques Anquetil, Bernard Hinault and Miguel Indurain on five wins; his 26 stage wins leave him nine off the record of Mark Cavendish, who will be wishing he'd postponed retirement by another year or two.
There could have been more had Pogacar not opted to babysit young teammate Isaac del Toro to a stage win, third place on the podium, and the best young rider's jersey too. Pogacar is able to win at will but sometimes seems happier in the role of world's most powerful domestique; perhaps the only thing holding him back from an unprecedented sixth ****** le is whether he can muster the enthusiasm for it. At 27, he is younger than all of his fellow five-time winners were and will be in his prime for a while yet.
But while the Pogacar era looks set to continue for some time, the post-Pogacar era already looks to be one to savour. Those left cold by the two-time world champion's iron grip on the sport can set a reminder to tune in in a couple of seasons' time, or perhaps as early as this autumn's Vuelta, should Pogacar skip it – as expected – to target a third rainbow jersey.
Pogacar seemed to enjoy helping del Toro as much if not more than winning stages (AP)

After Thomas had set up the chance and James held his nerve with two brilliant final bowls. New Zealand's final delivery failed and Wales celebrated.
The Wales campaign came full circle after it had started with a dramatic tie-break comeback win against Australia.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Friends and family of Minnesota Democratic lawmaker Melissa Hortman said the man sentenced Thursday to two life terms plus 40 years after pleading guilty to her murder failed to eliminate her legacy but caused enduring fear and fury as he changed their lives forever.
Fellow lawmakers and survivors of the shooting spoke Thursday at the sentencing hearing for Vance Boelter, the man who pleaded guilty last month to federal charges related to the killing of former House Speaker Hortman and her husband, Mark, as well as critically wounding state Sen. John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette.
Boelter, 59, agreed to plead guilty in June, almost a year after the Minneapolis-area attacks, so federal prosecutors would not seek the death penalty. Mark Hortman's father and siblings voiced anger that he could not be sentenced to death.
U.S. District Judge John R. Tunheim said it was "the longest sentence I have imposed after hearing thousands of cases over the years, but I do believe it is deserved."
In court Thursday, Sen. Hoffman said he and his family are constantly reminded of the extraordinary violence of that night, even in the mundane details of day-to-day life. He said they don't receive mail at home anymore, they have installed solid steel doors for protection, and they have changed how they do everyday tasks because of their injuries.

As the old adage goes, the only certainties in life are death and taxes. But an old rule applied in a new way for ETFs challenges one of those certainties.
Section 351 exchanges rely on a little-known provision of the U.S. tax code that, under specific conditions, allows appreciated securities to be contributed to a newly formed ETF without triggering an immediate taxable event. Especially for investors with concentrated stock positions, 351 conversions can provide a tax-efficient path to enhancing portfolio diversification. (Read: "Got Cap Gains? How Portfolios Can Move Into ETFs Tax-Free")
While Section 351 has been around for decades, only recently have ETF issuers applied the rule towards new ETFs. We recently sat down with independent tax management expert Brent Sullivan to better understand the opportunities (and obstacles) ETFs launched via Section 351 may present to investors.
Below is a lightly edited transcript of our conversation.
You're obviously passionate about taxes. Why does this topic interest you so much?

HETAUDA, Nepal (AP) — She paces the side of the darkened highway in central Nepal, just enough light from the trucks roaring past to illuminate her painted face to the men rolling in on rickshaws and motorbikes. She knows that every stranger who pays for her body could end her life. But she also knows their money is the only thing preventing her death.
This spot, littered in condom wrappers and fringed by jungle, is familiar to her. Rubi Lama once came here not as a **** worker, but as an aid worker who helped **** workers.
For nine years, Lama — who is transgender — had devoted her life to conducting HIV outreach in Nepal's marginalized communities, including the LGBTQ+ **** workers who wait by this highway each night. But after the United States slashed its foreign aid funding last year, Lama and more than 280,000 aid workers worldwide found themselves out of a job.
Much has been written about the devastating impacts the U.S. foreign aid cuts have had on the millions of people the funding once helped. Far less is known about the impacts on the helpers themselves.
In impoverished Nepal, where a conservative culture leaves openly transgender people with few legal job options, the impact on aid workers' lives was particularly crushing. Starving and scared, Lama and around 100 other LGBTQ+ aid workers left jobless by the funding cuts have turned to **** work to survive, walking the streets alongside the very people they once fought so hard to help.

Let's address the elephant in the room: Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC) is down 48% from October's 52-week highs as of July 20.
For longtime crypto observers, this drop feels familiar. Digital ****** ets have suffered several drawdowns of this magnitude, and the decline in 2026 isn't even unusual by historical standards. If anything, it's milder than the first three multiyear crypto winters.
Missed Nvidia in 2009? This Rare Signal Is Flashing Again. In 2009, a "Double Down" signal flashed for a little-known chipmaker called Nvidia. For the first time in years, that same "Total Conviction" signal is flashing for a company 1/100th the size of Nvidia. Continue »
Each time Bitcoin prices plunge, many obituaries are written. Each time, the ****** et has eventually recovered to new highs. The rumors of Bitcoin's death have been exaggerated so far. Past performance doesn't guarantee future results, of course, but the pattern does suggest that dramatic price cycles are a predictable feature of this ****** et class rather than a sign of imminent extinction.
The more interesting development isn't the price action; it's how you can now participate without feeling like you need to minor in cryptography.

NEW YORK, NEW YORK - JULY 15: Simone Biles speaks onstage during the 2026 ESPY Awards at David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center on July 15, 2026 in New York City. (Photo by Mike Coppola/Getty Images)
After revealing a health scare in June, Simone Biles has shared another development with her fans. The seven-time Olympic medalist posted an Instagram Story on Thursday featuring a photo of Biles in surgical attire, accompanied by her husband, Indianapolis Colts safety Jonathan Owens.
"His birthday but he takes me to get my procedure," Biles wrote affectionately. The photo is from July 22, indicating that Biles had already undergone the procedure at the time of posting. The 29-year-old donned a hospital gown, hair net in the photo.
The post is the first update in over a month from Biles, who shared news of a purported near-death experience on June 15.
"Almost dying wasn't on my bingo card earlier this week," Biles wrote last month, adding that she typically preserves her privacy in such circumstances, but felt compelled to share her recent experience.

TAMPA, Fla. - LSU linebacker Whit Weeks couldn't help but grin in anticipation.
When asked about a rare visit by Texas football to Baton Rouge, La., on Nov. 14, Weeks reeled off the reasons why the game seems special for both fan bases during an interview Thursday at the SEC's media days.
Senior night for the Tigers in Death Valley, the locals' preferred moniker for Tiger Stadium; the final home game for the Tigers; Texas quarterback Arch Manning's first game as a starter in his home state.
Oh, and a late-season meeting between two teams with expectations for an SEC championship and a College Football Playoff berth.
"That's going to be a fun one, for sure," said Weeks, a 6-foot-3, 225-pound senior who returns as one of the best linebackers in the SEC. "Death Valley will be rocking. I mean, two legendary programs going at it. What more could you ask for?"

Going by the numbers, no driver across NASCAR's top three national touring circuits is as popular as Toni Breidinger.
The 27-year-old who was the first Arab-American woman to compete in the top level of stockcar racing has more than 5.8 million combined followers across Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, X and YouTube.
After being the only woman to race full-time in NASCAR last season, fans haven't heard much from her on the track this year. Due to her part-time schedule with Rackley W.A.R., Breidinger hasn't gotten behind the wheel of the No. 27 Chevrolet in the Craftsman Truck Series since the May 15 race at Dover — the race that wound up being Kyle Busch's last win before his shocking death.
But Breidinger has quietly been working on her racecraft. She's getting back to her roots this year and returned to racing late-models, winning a competition at the historic Hickory Motor Speedway on July 11. Days later, she was in New York City, stunting on the red carpet at the ESPYs — a display of how she's able to successfully balance her on-track aspirations with her modeling career.
This weekend, Breidinger returns to NASCAR when the Truck Series races at Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park in Brownsburg, Indiana on Friday, July 24 at 8 p.m. ET. In the TSport 200, Breidinger will drive the No. 27 Chevrolet splashed with a Celsius paint scheme.
