The Minnesota Lynx have spent most of the 2026 season looking like the WNBA's team to beat. Finishing the job will not be simple. Minnesota returns from the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup break with a league-best 31-9 record. The Lynx have already clinched a playoff berth, but they have not secured the No. 1 seed or home-court advantage throughout the postseason.
Golden State sits only two games behind Minnesota at 29-11. The Lynx own the head-to-head tiebreaker, giving them control of the race, but their final four games are considerably more difficult than the Valkyries' remaining schedule.

Memphis football and Ole Miss haven't played each other since 2019. And it doesn't sound like they will anytime soon.
"Not currently," Ole Miss athletic director Keith Carter said on Sept. 14, when asked if there had been any recent discussions about future games with Memphis. "Our schedule is pretty solid for the next few years out. Being regional and being close, it's certainly something that we may look at in the future. But we don't have any plans for that in the immediate future."
The teams have met 63 times, but the last one was a Memphis win at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium in 2019. In the past, the Tigers would play at least one power conference team every season. But that has become extremely difficult because of changes across the sport, and they don't have a power conference opponent on the schedule for 2026 or 2027.
Chief among those changes is the SEC's move to nine conference games, which means one less spot to schedule a nonconference opponent.
"It just depends," Carter said. "The way scheduling goes now with nine conference games, you're trying to figure out what this new model is going to look like moving forward. Obviously we've had some games in the past, and could in the future. But not right now and not in the immediate future."

On August 4, Willis Lease Finance Corporation (NASDAQ:WLFC) reported second-quarter results that pulled in two directions at once. The lessor of commercial aircraft engines grew its operating business at a healthy clip, yet net income fell by more than half, a split that makes this quarter harder to read than the headline suggests.
Income from operations climbed 20.2% to $34.0 million in the quarter ended June 30, 2026, and the engine underneath that number is lease rent revenue, which rose 6.7% to $77.1 million as the average size of Willis Lease's portfolio expanded from a year earlier. Over the first six months of 2026, lease rent revenue is up 10.4% to $154.5 million, a steadier pace than the quarterly figure alone implies.
The company's trading business added to that. Willis Lease booked a $32.0 million gain on the sale of leased equipment, up 16.2%, after selling 21 engines and other parts and equipment during the quarter, compared with 14 engines and two airframes a year earlier. That kind of turnover matters for a leasing company, since selling ****** ets at a gain confirms that engine values in the market are holding up.
The bigger story sits in how Willis Lease is expanding beyond its own balance sheet. ****** ets under management, which folds in the company's on-balance-sheet fleet along with its Willis Aviation Capital business, grew 21% year over year to $4.4 billion. CEO Austin C. Willis tied that growth directly to building out Willis Aviation Capital, and the fee income backs that up: management and advisory fees jumped 113.4% to $5.5 million in the quarter and 194.9% to $13.4 million over six months. Two new investment fund partnerships, one with Liberty Mutual Investments that began operating in March 2026 and one with Blackstone Credit & Insurance that started in April 2026, are the mechanics behind that shift toward managing other people's capital rather than only deploying its own.
Net income attributable to common shareholders fell 51.2% to $28.7 million, and diluted earnings per share dropped from $2.81 to $1.31. Some of that gap traces to a tough comparison rather than a weaker quarter, since the second quarter of 2025 included a $43.0 million gain from the sale of the BAML business that had no counterpart this year. Willis Lease also recognized a $5.4 million loss on debt extinguishment in the quarter, and $12.4 million over six months, a cost tied to refinancing that simply was not there in 2025.

Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Alcorn State will meet for the second consecutive season in the 37th annual Southern Heritage Classic on Sept. 12 (6 p.m., HBCU Go). The Golden Lions won last season's meeting 24-20 at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium.
Playing in the Southern Heritage Classic is more than just a conference game for the two foes. Both the Braves (1-1) and Golden Lions (1-1) have alumni bases in Memphis and fans from areas not too far away.
Golden Lions coach Alonzo Hampton and Alcorn State coach Cedric Thomas were celebrated at the annual coaches luncheon inside the Renasant Convention Center on Sept. 11.
Hampton reflected on the team's journey back to this event. This will be UAPB's fourth consecutive appearance after having a 1-2 record through three years.
"It has been amazing," Hampton said. "So we get excited, man. Every year we get a chance to come back. It keeps getting bigger and bigger, and you know you pray for good weather, and hopefully everything works out. But it's fun. I look forward to it. Our players look forward to it. We stay downtown at the Westin, and the band's coming, so it's just really exciting, man, to come back and be able to do this."

Running their traditional slot-T offense, the Panthers (2-0) have started their season in impressive fashion with wins over Killeen High and San Marcos.
Vandegrift (1-1) used a fourth-quarter comeback to force overtime and eventually take a 28-21 win over San Antonio Brennan in Week 1, then lost 38-7 to San Antonio Johnson in Week 2 in a rare home loss.
It's an intriguing matchup of a Class 5A Division II team in Liberty Hill vs. a Class 6A squad in Vandegrift.

Around the Austin area, this week's top matchups include another Westlake game - this week, the Chaparrals (2-0) take to the road for the first time at Class 6A power Prosper - and some intriguing pairings like Lake Travis at Cibolo Steele, Vandegrift at Liberty Hill, Cedar Park at Waco Midway, Converse Judson at Bowie and Dripping Springs at Round Rock.

After four big wins in the quarterfinals, the United States, France, Spain, and Germany all earned their spots in the semifinals. Saturday's two matchups will be intense. Each team left in the competition can find its way to the finals. Let's take a look at the two semifinal games.
France has been putting up insane statistics during this tournament. Between breaking the single-game three-point record and heavily outscoring their opponents, it is safe to say they are the team to beat. However, this semifinal clash against Germany, who have home-court advantage, will be their biggest test of the tournament.
The good news for France is their depth. There are many strong players who have been coming off the bench and making an impact. One of those players is none other than Marine Johannès. Johannès ranks eighth in the tournament in points scored per game with 16.5. She is currently leading the tournament with 16 three-pointers made so far. If you haven't heard about Malachi Toney by now, you are living under a rock. The 18-year-old prodigy out of Liberty City, Florida has taken the college world by storm after his astonishing freshman season. He helped lead Miami Hurricanes to another national championship appearance.
Toney's week one performance against Stanford on Saturday will never be forgotten, literally, because he set the Miami Hurricanes' single-game receiving record with 234 yards and a hat trick. Eddie Brown previously set the record in 1984 against Boston College with 220 receiving yards. He finished his 2025 campaign with 1,211 receiving yards, 109 receptions, and 10 touchdowns, leading the team in receptions and receiving yards at 18 years old.
Miami head coach Mario Cristobal was asked about Toney on the Pat McAfee Show and gave nothing but praise to his star-studded receiver: "He's put on 12–14 pounds of muscle man; he can accelerate and decelerate at a higher rate." Cristobal said. "He is stronger, he is faster, and then the time he puts in it's never changed, he always tries to push the envelope with that."
Cristobal's praise and the stats tell the story of the player Toney is, but three games could close the door on his competition.

The FIBA World Cup is underway, and the United States women are once again the heavy favorite to walk away with the gold medal. The US hasn't lost in the World Cup since 2006, and this year's roster is stacked with both veteran and up-and-coming talent.
Their biggest threat has long appeared to be France, who have dominated all three games of Group Play action and finished with the silver medal in the 2024 Paris Olympics.
But, there's another, more under-the-radar team that has impressed in the early days of the World Cup: Belgium.
Belgium beat Australia 80-68 on Monday behind a monster performance from Emma Meesseman, who exploded for 22 points on 10-of-17 shooting, along with 10 rebounds, 8 ******* ists, and 2 steals. Julie Vanloo (12 points, 5 ******* ists) and Julie Allemand (11 points, 7 ******* ists) were also both highly impactful.

The Las Vegas Aces will be looking to run it back as defending champs with the reigning MVP, A'ja Wilson, leading the way. Lots of other contenders hope to have something to say about that including the Atlanta Dream, New York Liberty and Indiana Fever. The Fever, who were without floor leader Caitlin Clark for much of last season, are fully healthy. Head coach Bob Chesney left for UCLA, as did some of the Dukes' top players including running back Wayne Knight and defensive end Sahir West. Starting quarterback Alonza Barnett III wound up at UCF.
James Madison lost a bulk of the coaching staff and all but three primary starters from its CFP team. But the program is accustomed to handling adversity of this nature, not missing a beat when Curt Cignetti handed the reins to Bob Chesney two years ago.
Signs of a similar baton pass were evident Saturday when JMU defeated Liberty, 20-13, in head coach Billy Napier's debut.

The Americans and everyone else will have to navigate around and over some of the tallest women on the planet: China's 19-year-old Zhang Ziyu stands 7-foot-3. The U.S. team is already familiar with 6-10 Han Xu from her WNBA games with the New York Liberty.
If not for a passport mishap, Zhang and Han would be joined by another center — 6-7 Li Yueru, who plays with the WNBA's Dallas Wings. Li posted on social media Wednesday that her passport was lost in the mail and she won't be able to compete.

TROY - RPI junior Micah Balzarini went to a high school in Washington state known for producing quarterbacks, including a few who played in the NFL.
He transferred to a prep school in New Jersey, highly regarded for its football program, which led him to RPI.
After waiting two years to play for the Engineers, Balzarini will get his first college start at quarterback against WPI on Saturday in Troy to open the season.
"I feel really good," Balzarini said. "I think the team's in a really good spot. I believe in our athletes. It's my job just to be the point guard and get the good guys the ball and let them do their thing. Not too nervous or anything."
Balzarini replaces Anthony DeMatteo, who graduated after throwing for 1,971 yards and 16 touchdowns last season to earn second-team All-Liberty League honors.

SCHENECTADY - It's an elite matchup that happens on the Union College football field every day.
Senior wide receiver Gil Rivera, one of the Liberty League's finest at his position, faces off against senior cornerback Matt Mitchell, a first-team all-league pick a year ago.
"We say during practice, we're each other's No.1 enemy," Mitchell said. "Once the cleats come off, the helmets come off, we're best friends. So it's all good."
Mitchell said they've taken turns beating each other in practice.
"He makes me better," Mitchell said. "Iron sharpens iron. He's been keeping me on my toes. I keep him on his toes, and that's kind of how we like it."

LYNCHBURG, Va. (WFXR) -- Liberty will kick off its 54th football season with the second installment of the Battle of the Blue Ridge. The Flames will travel to James Madison on Saturday for their 20th all-time meeting with the Dukes at noon. JMU recorded a 31-13 victory at Williams Stadium on Sept. 20, 2025 in the inaugural Battle of the Blue Ridge clash, improving to 13-6 all-time against the Flames. However, Liberty won its most recent visit to Harrisonburg, a 26-21 triumph in the opening round of the 2014 FCS Playoffs. Liberty has won six straight season openers and eight of its last nine lid-lifters.

College football is officially back, and after a handful of games took place last Saturday during Week 0, the rest of the country gets back on the field from Thursday to Monday during Week 1. It's the first full college football weekend of the season, and the long offseason is finally over.
Here at Sooners Wire, we'll certainly have our eyes all over the season-opening game for the Oklahoma Sooners, which will take place in Norman on Friday at 7 p.m. against the UTEP Miners. However, with a full slate of games for the first time since late November, there will be plenty of intriguing matchups to keep an eye on during Labor Day weekend.
Here are the top five games to watch in Week 1.
Louisville and Ole Miss will face off at a neutral site at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tennessee for the Liberty Mutual Music City Kickoff. The Cardinals are viewed as a dark horse team in the ACC heading into this season, and they'll have a big stage to make an early statement in non-league action. Head coach Jeff Brohm and quarterback Lincoln Kienholz will look to get off to a fast start in 2026.

The 3x3 league co-founded by former UConn women's basketball greats Breanna Stewart and Napheesa Collier continues to thrive as the premier offseason domestic league for WNBA stars.

A Nashville charter school has removed books featuring LGBT themes from its elementary school libraries months after a Christian teacher was disciplined for refusing to read one of the books to students, a decision the school later cleared from the teacher's record.
The Tennessee Star reported Friday that, according to the First Liberty Institute — a nonprofit legal organization — the Knowledge is Power Program (KIPP) in Nashville has taken out books that promote same-sex marriage.
"We are thrilled that KIPP Nashville voluntarily removed books that could run afoul of parents' rights under the Constitution and Tennessee law," Cliff Martin, senior counsel at First Liberty Institute, said in a Thursday statement.
"It is paramount that religious views be respected in schools," Martin said.

Looking at the WNBA schedule and wondering why there's a two-week gap in games?
That's because from Monday to Sept. 16 the league is taking a hiatus for the women's basketball FIBA World Cup where a cohort of its best players will be competing with their respective national teams. Players began arriving in Berlin this week with the tournament's group stages set to tip off on Sept. 4.
This break is a standard procedure during any World Cup year, but this season as the pool of international talent has expanded in the WNBA, even more stars will be on the global stage.
The U.S. women's national team will be competing for its fifth consecutive World Cup gold medal with a roster composed of some of the WNBA's biggest stars. Las Vegas Aces forward A'ja Wilson and Phoenix Mercury guard Kelsey Plum were late scratches from Team USA's roster due to injuries. But a new era of players, including Caitlin Clark (Indiana Fever), Paige Bueckers (Dallas Wings) and Angel Reese (Atlanta Dream), will make their debuts with other young stars like Aliyah Boston (Fever) and Rhyne Howard (Dream). Washington Mystics teammates Kiki Iriafen and Sonia Citron will be making their debuts as well, replacing Wilson and Plum. Napheesa Collier (Minnesota Lynx) and Jackie Young (Aces) will also be starring alongside veterans Chelsea Gray (Aces), Kahleah Copper (Mercury) and Breanna Stewart (New York Liberty).
The U.S., who will be led by Duke coach Kara Lawson, tip off the group stage against China, which it holds an all-time 8-0 record against. Team USA will continue the group stages with a Sept. 6 game against Italy, which it is 1-1 against in World Cup play, and on Sept. 7 against Czechia, which it has a 2-0 edge against, before the quarterfinals begin on Sept. 8.

The departure of DeWanna Bonner from the Phoenix Mercury saw Alyssa Thomas step up even more for them as the 34-year-old forward led the way against the Toronto Tempo in their strong 101-69 win on Saturday.
Ahead of the FIBA World Cup Break, Alyssa Thomas made everything click on offense for the Mercury after dishing out 12 ***** ists along with six rebounds, four points, and a steal. Her playmaking against the Tempo tied her average ***** ists this season with Caitlin Clark at 8.4 APG.
