US stocks rebounded on Thursday as oil prices edged lower and a Fed rate hike on Wednesday offered some relief that the central bank was working to contain inflation.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average (^DJI) rose 0.6%, while the S&P 500 (^GSPC) climbed 1.1%. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite (^IXIC) jumped 1.7%, rebounding from a post-Fed-hike slump on Wednesday.
Stocks recovered as investors **** sed Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh's hawkish rhetoric, which **** ysts said helped restore the Fed's credibility on inflation. On Wednesday, the Federal Reserve raised interest rates by 25 basis points for the first time in three years and projected one more rate hike this year.

LJ Wells, a 6'8 power forward who played the last four seasons at Northern Kentucky, has committed to play for Louisville in 2026-27. Wells is the namesake plaintiff in the ongoing Wells vs. NCAA case in Jefferson County Circuit Court that earned a fifth-year of eligibility for players like Wells, D'Angelo Hutchinson, Jabari Mack, and Missouri hooper Mark Mitchell.
Wells started all 33 games for the Norse last season, posting career-best averages of 15.0 points and 7.3 rebounds per game. He also earned All-Horizon Tournament Team honors after averaging 22.3 points, 8.7 rebounds and 2.7 ***** ists while helping NKU to the Horizon League semis, where they fell to eventual champion Wright State.
It feels weird to be adding players like this, especially when you can't be 100 percent sure if they're even going to be able to play this winter, but this is a nice depth add at a position where U of L could definitely use some additional depth.

The Cleveland Browns will sport a new defensive look when they take the field on Sunday for their Week 1 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Some of those changes are by design: defensive end Jared Verse replaces Myles Garrett, linebacker Quincy Williams replaces Devin Bush, and defensive coordinator Mike Rutenberg takes over for Jim Schwartz.

DETROIT — His college career unfrozen by a judge, Orlando Lovejoy is headed to the frozen tundra.
Lovejoy, who starred for Detroit Mercy men's basketball the last two seasons, has committed to fellow Horizon League program Green Bay for his fifth and final season of eligibility.
Lovejoy was among hundreds of college athletes from the high-school class of 2022 who were granted a fifth season of eligibility through temporary restraining orders from judges across the country. The NCAA recently announced a five-year eligibility window, starting with the high-school class of 2023.
Lovejoy, 23, was one of the top point guards in the Horizon League the last two seasons, and in 2025-26, he was first-team all-league as he led the **** ans to within a whisker of the league tournament championship and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Lovejoy, a Detroit native, started all 31 games for Detroit Mercy in 2025-26, and was top 10 in the league in scoring (15.8 points), **** ists (3.7) and steals (1.6). He made free throws at an 89.2% clip.
Lovejoy spent his first two college seasons at Eastern Michigan, before transferring to Detroit Mercy after the school hired Mark Montgomery as head coach. So far this season heading into another weekend of games, high school quarterbacks in Utah are putting up huge numbers, some of the best in the country and there are not only a few of them.
The depth among stat-stuffing quarterbacks in the Beehive State is striking and influencing some of their recruitments as well.
In terms of overall passing yards, Utah high school quarterbacks have an advantage because many of them have played four games when the rest of the country has only played three but, still, their passing yards per game numbers are through the roof.

One could call it chance or call it fate, but there's little doubt that it required quite a bit of good fortune for the Chicago Bears to wind up with Caleb Williams as their No. 1 quarterback. As they prepare to meet the Carolina Panthers in this weekend's season opener, the trade history of the two franchises is back in the spotlight.
The Bears famously sent the No. 1 overall pick to the Panthers back in 2023. The senior quarterback did damage through the air, too, throwing two first-half touchdown passes before delivering the game-winning score on the ground.
His first touchdown pass, a 15-yarder to senior running back Devan Bacote, tied the game 14-14 in the first quarter. In the second quarter, Showerda connected with Jayden Soto over the middle for an 83-yard touchdown that gave the Spartans a 21-14 lead.
The game, however, was far from over.
Leading by eight with 4:41 remaining, Maloney watched Glastonbury put together a game-tying drive after Shane Santora returned the kickoff past midfield to give the Guardians excellent field position. The SEC says that it's looking for an "appropriate resolution" after its presidents and chancellors met on Thursday following the drama surrounding LSU's pursuit of players who had signed NFL contracts.
The meeting was held a day after a hearing in the conference's suit against LSU and coach Lane Kiffin was continued. That continuance came after LSU filled its final two roster spots on Tuesday evening and left no ****** e to add former Ole Miss DT Zxavian Harris and ex-Rebels TE Dae'Quan Wright to the roster in 2026.
The two players had signed contracts with NFL teams but were cut during the preseason. They were eligible to return for a fifth season of college football after a Louisiana judge ruled that they should be granted an extra year following the NCAA's decision to give all college athletes in the class of 2023 and younger five years to play five seasons.
"The presidents and chancellors of the Southeastern Conference met Thursday by videoconference to discuss recent matters involving conference expectations and responsibilities," the SEC's brief statement said. "Those discussions will continue as the conference and its member universities work toward an appropriate resolution."

The national average price for a gallon of gasoline hit $4.14 heading into Labor Day weekend, according to AAA, the highest ever recorded for the holiday and the first time the average has been above $4 on Labor Day. The price broke a record set 14 years ago, when the average was $3.82 on Sept. 3, 2012. A year ago, Americans were paying just $3.19.
On CNN's "State of the Union" on Sunday, host Dana Bash pointed out to Energy Secretary Chris Wright that he had said on the same show in April that gas prices had peaked and might not fall below $3 per gallon until 2027. She asked whether — with the war in Iran, the Russia-Ukraine war and dwindling U.S. reserves — prices could go higher.
"I don't want to have an opinion on that," Wright said.
He then pointed to the gasoline futures market, which he said was pricing the fuel about 30 cents a gallon lower two months out. He said the Trump administration had changed blending requirements to allow American refiners to produce more gasoline, and named several Democratic-led states that have declined to adopt the new standards.
"New York, Connecticut, California and several other Democrat-governed states have decided not to adopt those standards," Wright said. "They apparently want to keep driving up prices on their residents."

Six years after it was banned for its racist overtones, the "Gator Bait" cheer reutrned Saturday in Gainesville for Florida's 2026 college football opener.
The Universitty of Florida's marching band played the cheer in the first quarter of the Gators' Sept. 5 game against Florida Atlantic for the first time since then-president Ken Fuchs banned it at football games in 2020.
Former UF defensive star Lawrence Wright popularized the term in 1995 after a win over rival Florida State when he said, "If you ain't a Gator, ya Gator bait, baby." The phrase caught on with the Florida faithful during the team's run of success under coach Steve Spurrier.
Even though Fuchs acknowledged the cheer itself wasn't racist, he based his decision on the "historic racist imagery **** ociated with the phrase." Andrew Symonds once produced one of the rarest scoring feats in Test cricket, collecting eight runs from a single delivery during Australia's Test against New Zealand at the Gabba in Brisbane in 2008-09.
The bizarre sequence involved an all-run four followed by four overthrows, with New Zealand fast bowler Iain O'Brien at the centre of the drama. There was an added twist to the incident, as O'Brien had seen Symonds dropped off the previous delivery before eventually dismissing him just two ****** later.
Australia were 124 for four in the 46th over after Ricky Ponting had decided to bat in Brisbane.
O'Brien opened the over with a bouncer, which Symonds ducked under. The bowler went short again with his next delivery, and this time Symonds pulled the ball towards mid-wicket.
However, Aaron Redmond put down the chance.
O'Brien responded as fast bowlers often do after a missed opportunity, sending down another short delivery. This time, the ball was outside off-stump and Symonds attacked it ferociously with a pull.
The enormous Gabba outfield slowed the ball down, but Symonds and Michael Clarke had already completed three runs by the time Redmond got to it.
The pair then decided to push for another run, hoping to take advantage of the throw.
That decision produced chaos.
New Zealand wicketkeeper Brendon McCullum moved across to collect the return. He gathered the ball, turned and threw it towards the stumps, only to discover that Symonds had already made his ground.

BATON ROUGE — Lane Kiffin arrived on the set of ESPN's College GameDay around 10 a.m. local time with a look of determination. He still flashed a peace sign at LSU fans who cheered him as he walked, but otherwise didn't break stride.
Draped in a white **** on down and grey slacks, Kiffin was several hours away from making his debut as Tigers head coach. But first, he had some questions to answer about a massive and consequential decision.
On Friday night, LSU decided not to add Dae'Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris to its final roster—a shocking turn after the players, as well as LSU itself, fought a legal battle for the right to take the field as Tigers.
Wright and Harris were just two of hundreds of college athletes who have sued the NCAA to challenge the implementation of its "age-based" eligibility policy, which offered a fifth year of eligibility to college athletes—but didn't include players from the freshman class of 2022 who had already completed, like them. With Clemson football's season opener in Baton Rouge approaching, LSU has decided not to test the limits of a growing eligibility dispute involving two former professional players.
LSU coach Lane Kiffin confirmed Saturday that Dae'Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris were not included on the Tigers' official roster, despite a Louisiana judge issuing an injunction that opened the door for both players to compete.
"That wasn't easy," Kiffin said. "As much as I feel for the players… I believe that you fight for what you believe in, and I believe these kids have an opportunity to play, just like all the other kids around the country that are winning court cases and being put on rosters. But at the same time, I'm the head coach of LSU and I had to make a decision that is for the big picture of LSU and the LSU football program, with the uncertainties of what potentially could have come by adding them to the roster."
Those uncertainties were considerable.
The SEC has warned its schools of potentially significant penalties for putting former NFL players on a college roster and recently took legal action against LSU. Clemson also warned that using former professional players could violate the contract governing Saturday night's matchup.
