The Rays looked to make it eight straight against the Sacramento Athletics tonight, as Nick Martinez took the hill for Tampa Bay. Opposite him was 25 year old Mason Barnett, making just his eighth career start at the major league level.
The Rays offense didn't take long to get things started, as Junior Caminero crushed his 35th homer of the year:

That was the second homer in as many games for Caminero. Dating back to August 5, his last three hits have left the yard.
Things stayed put until the top of the third when the Rays scored their third run on a sacrifice fly by *checks notes* Chandler Simpson. It would only take one more inning before the Rays would tack on two more from another unlikely source, as Taylor Walls hit his first home run of 2026:

The Athletics dropped the second game of their three-game series against the Rays on Tuesday night, losing in embarrassing fashion to Tampa Bay 12-4 on a warm night in Sacramento. The A's will now have their backs up against the wall tomorrow as they'll hope to avoid the sweep in front of the home crowd. And with the Angels' win tonight, they need a win to avoid the cellar of the American League. How did it come to this?
Tampa didn't wait to get going against A's starter Mason Barnett. Just two batters into the game the Rays were up 2-0 thanks to a two-run blast off the bat of Rays slugger Junior Caminero, his 35th of the year which puts him in a tie for the league lead.
Tampa would add on another in the third inning thanks to two walks and a wild pitch from Barnett, then three more in the fourth off back-to-back home runs, another two-run blast and a solo home run. After four innings the Rays had already tagged Barnett for six runs (five earned). That would be it for Barnett in this one, making way for lefty Brady Basso to start the fifth inning.
Mason Barnett: 4 IP, 5 H, 6 R (5 ER), 3 BB, 0 K, 3 HR, 67 pitches
Not a great outing from Barnett and that's back-to-back duds from the righty. There's no guarantee he's **** ured another start the next time through the rotation but with the lack of other options it's likely he gets another go, which would come next against the team that traded him, the Kansas City Royals. Not a bad matchup to let the young pitcher go prove something.

CINCINNATI (AP) — Elly De La Cruz hit his fourth career leadoff home run — one of four homers by Cincinnati — and the Reds beat the Athletics 6-5 on Thursday afternoon to complete a three-game sweep.
The Reds (56-58) improved to 13-6 since the All-Star break. The A's (45-70) have lost eight straight games and 12 straight series.
Brian Serven hit a two-run homer off Brock Burke to get the A's within a run in the ninth. It was Serven's second homer. Burke retired the next two batters for his second save.
De La Cruz led off the game with his 19th home run of the season off A's left-hander Mason Barnett.
Barnett (1-2) made his second straight start after 14 relief appearances. He allowed five earned runs in 4 1/3 innings with three walks and seven strikeouts.

With one month remaining until the start of Northwestern's football season, head coach David Braun and his team are officially in fall camp and making final preparations for September.
The Big Ten Media Days in downtown Chicago have officially concluded after all 18 coaches and their players shared their thoughts on the upcoming season. Along with Coach Braun, Griffin Wilde, Caleb Komolafe and Robert Fitzgerald made an appearance to discuss their thoughts on the upcoming season.
After hearing from some of the biggest names on the roster, here are the biggest takeaways from the afternoon:
While easier said than done, Coach Braun laid out his vision for the future of Northwestern football. While he thanked the previous coaches of the 'Cats, he made it very clear that he wants to change the course of Northwestern football. He no longer wants the status quo of a mid-tier football team that makes a bowl game; he wants it all.
"What's been achieved over the last three decades under Coach Barnett, Coach Walker and Coach Fitz is something we will always talk about as a program," Braun said in his opening statement. "I have a level of appreciation of what has been accomplished. But there is also an acknowledgement and an 'and' proposition that we have expectations to do it better than we've ever done it before."

The Chicago Bears amped up the intensity during Tuesday's padded practice, which featured several live periods and brought out the emotions. So it's not surprise that the first scuffle of the summer broke out, featuring a pair of notable rookies.
According to Sean Hammond, sixth-round rookie defensive tackle Jordan van den Berg slammed undrafted rookie offensive lineman Caden Barnett into the ground after a snap with the third-team units. It was the first time tempers have flared at Halas Hall this summer.
Patrick Finley added that defensive end Montez Sweat "appeared very excited." In fact, the whole defense was "fired up," according to Greg Braggs.

There are once again a lot of familiar quarterbacks in new places ahead of the 2026 college football season. Here are the most notable quarterbacks who changed schools during the offseason.
Arnold was Auburn's primary quarterback in 2025, but threw for just six touchdowns across 215 passing attempts in 10 games and transferred after Hugh Freeze's departure. The former highly touted Oklahoma recruit now heads west to play for former Florida coach Dan Mullen and hopes that his third school in four seasons will facilitate a breakout season.
With James Madison coach Bob Chesney now at UCLA, Barnett left for a power conference school too after leading the Dukes to the College Football Playoff in 2025. In two seasons as JMU's starter, Barnett threw for over 5,400 yards and 49 TDs to just 13 interceptions. He also rushed for 589 yards and 15 TDs in 2025.
The three-year starter at Iowa State will play his final season of college football in the Big Ten after following coach Matt Campbell to State College. Becht's stats dropped in 2025 as Iowa State won three fewer games than it did in 2024, but he tossed 64 career TDs and threw for 9,274 yards over 42 games with the Cyclones.
Boley was Kentucky's main quarterback in 2025 as the Mark Stoops era came to an ignominious end. Boley threw for 15 TDs and 12 interceptions in 2025 and now heads to Tempe as the favorite to start for coach Kenny Dillingham.

ORLANDO — Few expected much from Scott Frost's second UCF season last time around. Then, the Knights caught lightning in a bottle, beat every team in their path and claimed a national ***** le when the NCAA's Colley Matrix rating system crowned them as champions.
As it opens training camp Aug. 3, UCF faces incredibly long odds to repeat that feat in 2026, projected to finish in the bottom half of the Big 12 for a fourth consecutive year. The Knights are 7-20 against league opponents, including a 2-12 mark away from the Acrisure Bounce House.
Frost and four players addressed local and national reporters July 7 at the Big 12's media days in Frisco, Texas. However, many of the questions asked then will not have an answer until the Knights take the field — for practice and beyond.
Here are three important queries that could define whether UCF can push toward the conference's upper echelon, or whether it will be another battle to scrape a bowl game come November.
On paper, the Knights should have gotten significantly better behind center with the addition of Alonza Barnett III from James Madison. He earned Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year honors with 2,806 passing yards, 589 rushing yards and 38 touchdowns, leading the Dukes to an unlikely appearance in the College Football Playoff.

Teenage forward Luca Williams-Barnett stole the show in Tottenham's 4-2 penalty shootout win over Sydney FC in a sign of how the club have changed.
The 17-year-old, who started the second half on the left but moved into his favoured attacking midfield position, opted for the first penalty and nonchalantly chipped a panenka down the middle.
It preceded a shootout in which Sydney FC duo Joe Lacey and Alexander Popovic hit the post and had a penalty saved by goalkeeper Martin Dubravka, with Sandro Tonali, debutant Andrew Robertson and Dane Scarlett all scoring to secure victory after a 1-1 draw.
Williams-Barnett stole the show to such an extent that his manager Roberto De Zerbi was describing him as a "precious diamond" after the match.
He added: "We have to work on him in the final third and he must work hard on his physicality. I've worked with a lot of young players in my time and he's a potentially special player."

The Green Bay Packers announced four roster moves ahead of the start of training camp, including a swap of international exemption players.
The team released kicker Lucas Havrisik and edge rusher Dante Barnett and signed tight end Thomas Yassmin and kicker Lenny Krieg on Tuesday.
The kicker swap means Krieg will now represent the competition for rookie Trey Smack, while the addition of Yassmin provides a healthy body at tight end, where the Packers are dealing with injuries to Tucker Kraft and Luke Musgrave (both on the PUP list) to start camp.
Krieg made a 57-yard field goal and his lone extra point attempt during the preseason with the Atlanta Falcons in 2025.
Yassmin, a former Rugby player, played 42 snaps during the preseason with the Denver Broncos in 2024 and 13 with the Los Angeles Chargers in 2025. He has never appeared in a regular season game.

PHOENIX — The Athletics placed right-hander J.T. Ginn on the 15-day injured list with a blister on the middle finger of his pitching hand.
The move is retroactive to when Ginn threw 6 1/3 shutout innings while striking out seven and walking three in a 15-1 victory over Washington. For the season, Ginn is 8-6 with a 3.46 ERA in 109 1/3 innings, including 19 starts.
The Athletics recalled right-hander Mason Barnett from Triple-A Las Vegas to fill the roster spot. Barrett was 1-0 with a 4.64 ERA in 21 1/3 innings in his earlier relief appearances for the team, though he was working as a starter in the minors.
The A’s have a season-high 11 players on the injured list.

On the way to a strong showing against the Athletics, the Chicago White Sox relied on an unlikely hero. Outfielder Tristan Peters became the latest player to hit for the cycle with a outstanding performance on Friday.
Peters' stellar night started with a double in the third inning, but the White Sox's slow start kept the game tied at 0-0 until the fifth inning. Chicago then picked up four runs in the bottom of the fifth, including a two-run RBI single from Peters.
In the bottom of the seventh, Peters added to his tally with a two-run homer, a 410-foot bomb that gave the White Sox a 6-1 lead.
With A's relievers Justin Sterner and Mason Barnett unable to close out the inning, Peters then got another at-bat before the end of the seventh. The rookie outfielder used it well, hitting a cycle-clinching triple that sent Andrew Benintendi home and pulled Chicago's lead to 12-1.
The White Sox then picked up two more runs in the bottom of the eighth to ice the dominant 14-1 win.

The 41-52 Athletics took on the 47-45 Chicago White Sox at Rate Field in Chicago today. While the A's are struggling, the Southsiders are amid the most dramatic turn-around from last season.
Jacob Lopez took the mound as today's opener, going up against 26-year-old righty Sean Burke for the White Sox. Lopez took on the first five Pale Hose batters before turning the game over to Aaron Civale. Civale cruised up until the bottom of the fifth when things began to unravel. Chase Meidroth doubled on a sharp line drive to left field. Andrew Benintendi doubled, driving in Meidroth. Civale walked Kyle Teel. Tristan Peters singled, driving in Benintendi. Sam Antonacci singled to right fielder, scoring Kyle Teel. Elvis Alvarado relieved Civale with no outs in the fifth. Miguel Vargas hit a sacrifice fly to center fielder Henry Bolte, scoring Tristan Peters. That gave the White Sox a 4-0 lead. In the meantime, Sean Burke had given up just two hits leading up to the seventh inning. But Tyler Soderstrum got the A's on the board with a solo rocket to right field. That was number 14 for Soderstrom.
Justin Sterner got rocked in the bottom of the seventh. Kyle Teel walked and Tristan Peters homered, scoring Teel. Sam Antonacci walked, and Munetaka Murakami doubled, driving in Antonacci. Miguel Vargas hit a ground rule double, scoring Murakami. Mason Barnett replaced Sterner with a score of 8-1 and no outs in the inning. Andrew Benintendi doubled, scoring three more Sox. Tristan Peters tripled, completing the cycle for him tonight. The last White Sox batter to hit for the cycle was José Abreu, who hit for the cycle on September 9, 2017, against the San Francisco Giants. That brought the score to 12-1.
Carlos Cortes came in to pitch the eighth. He struck out Murakami, but Miguel Vargas homered to left field. Chase Meidroth singled, driving in Montgomery to mercifully end the scoring for the White Sox. The final was 14-1 and continued the A's slide at seven games in a row.

Despite Iowa football being a finalist, 2027 four-star offensive lineman Kyler Kuhn announced his commitment to the Missouri Tigers.
Kuhn, who is a 6-foot-3, 280-pounder starring for St. Pius X High School in Kansas City, Mo., ranks as the No. 221 player nationally, as the No. 10 interior offensive lineman, and as the No. 5 recruit in the Show-Me State, according to 247Sports' composite rankings.
Kuhn committed to Missouri over Iowa and Nebraska.
While missing out on Kuhn is disappointing, Iowa has a great pitch to make to offensive line recruits. The Hawkeyes' tradition up front under head coach Kirk Ferentz is well established and Iowa won the Joe Moore Award last season under offensive line coach George Barnett's direction.
Iowa currently has offensive line commitments from Reilly Newman and Nate Brenneman in its 2027 class.

AMES — The Gilbert girls soccer team was unable to withstand a quick North Scott scoring spurt in a 3-0 loss to the Lancers in the Class 2A quarterfinals of the girls state soccer tournament on June 8 at the Lied Recreation Fields.
North Scott struck twice within two minutes late in the first half and Gilbert never recovered in suffering its first and only loss of the season.
"When you get down in a hole, it's hard to dig out," said Gilbert co-head coach Heather Currans. "They definitely have the talent to do that; it just wasn't going to happen for us tonight."
The first goal came after Gilbert was whistled for a penalty in the box. Leading Lancer scorer Reese Barnett converted the penalty kick to start the scoring with eight minutes left in the first half.
North Scott struck again when Camryn Jones got one past Gilbert keeper Annika Yoder-Stoulil with 6:37 left in the first half.
