ONTARIO — When the Ontario Warriors needed a big play the most, junior Cardae Brown wanted his number called.
In the Warriors' 17-7 Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference victory over the Clear Fork Colts in a battle of unbeatens, the Warriors were stuck with a decision to make. Leading 14-7 and looking at a long third-down play, coach Aaron Eckert was contemplating what to do. Then, Brown piped up.
"Cardae is a tremendous athlete who will have opportunities to play beyond high school," Eckert said. "He came to me and said to put him on a post and lets go win this game and as a coach, you have to listen to your players. He made a catch over two guys and made the game-winning play."

It's year two for K.C. Keeler at Temple. He went 5-7 in his first year in Philadelphia. What do you make of his fit at Temple and what are expectations for the Owls the rest of this season?
K.C. Keeler has already proven to be an excellent fit at Temple. His résumé speaks for itself, and he is a proven winner even with a lack of resources. He won FCS national championships at both Delaware and Sam Houston, but his 10-win season at Sam Houston in year two of FBS membership might be his magnum opus. Additionally, he's a great fit since he has publicly declared this will be his final job, which promises Temple players and staffers a sense of stability.
Keeler walked into Philadelphia last year and immediately turned Temple into a 5-win team, after the Owls hadn't won more than three games in the entire 2020s. Temple fell one point short of both service academies, and flipping either result would have pushed the program into the postseason.
Temple played incredibly sound football in Keeler's first season, only losing four turnovers the entire year. The Owls should have lofty expectations considering they didn't lose a single starter to the transfer portal. However, they lack experience at quarterback and replacing Evan Simon is no easy task, which could present some challenges offensively. I would label bowl eligibility as a reasonable and attainable goal for this 2026 team.

The Seattle Seahawks pulled off an incredible come from behind victory in the NFL's season opener. Seattle beat New England 13-10 thanks in part to an incredible 45-yard touchdown from Jaxon Smith-Njigba. One detail about that play shows just how clutch the play really was.
Seahawks quarterback Drew Lock revealed that JSN's touchdown catch was not a play they ran in practice.
"It is like a classic football play," Lock said on Thursday per John Boyle of Seahawks.com "But, no. No, definitely never ran it. Looked kind of funny before the snap. I didn't really seem like they had anybody ready to match Jaxon based on what I knew we were about it run. He's the third read in that play, and when 11 is just standing there, you got to give him the pill."

Pittsburgh Steelers star receiver DK Metcalf was at home when he saw his former team, the Seattle Seahawks, reach the mountaintop after beating the New England Patriots in Super Bowl 60.
Metcalf represented the Seahawks for six seasons, standing out as their top receiver. He put together three 1,000-yard seasons, helping them make the playoffs three times.
His time there ended after Seattle sent him to Pittsburgh in exchange for draft compensation during the 2025 offseason. This allowed him to team up with quarterback Aaron Rodgers, but it paved the way for Seattle to win its second Super Bowl in franchise history.
Metcalf reflected on the events that offseason during an interview with The Athletic. According to reporter Jonathan Jones, "Metcalf has no regrets about asking a trade out of Seattle. The Seahawks listened partly because they knew a major Jaxon Smith-Njigba payday could arrive soon."
"I live with my decisions every day… they're very well thought-out decisions to where I know the consequences, know my benefits from every decision that I make," Metcalf says. Penn State faced Marshall as a 23.5-point favorite in week one, crushing expectations with a 45-0 victory. They have now opened as Temple with the same line – as a 23.5-point favorite in week two over the Owls.
The Nittany Lions kicked off the Matt Campbell era with a satisfying shutout victory, with strong performances in all three phases of the game. Rocco Becht had a career-high four passing touchdowns before exiting the game early in the third quarter. Koby Howard had the breakout performance that Nittany Lion fans have been waiting for, catching six passes for 161 yards and a touchdown. The Penn State defense swarmed Marshall all game long, with Caleb Bacon among the top performers with four TFLs in a game where he seemed to nearly always find himself in the Herd backfield.
Temple also began the season on a winning note on Saturday, taking down Rhode Island 38-14. Former Penn State quarterback Jaxon Smolik was four-of-six passing for 57 yards and a touchdown for the Owls, while running back Keveun Mason had 192 yards from scrimmage and two scores.
Penn State will visit Temple for its first road game of the season on Saturday. Kickoff is set for noon with the game airing on ESPN2.

Despite losing their top scorer, Labaron Philon Jr., Alabama head coach Nate Oats has reloaded his roster by retaining key pieces and targeting the transfer portal. After testing NBA waters, Amari Allen felt it was best to return to Alabama. This is massive for the Crimson Tide as they return one of the nation's better defenders. Allen was tasked with the toughest ****** ignments game after game. The expectations will be high for him. This is similar to Philon Jr., who, in his first year, was great and turned into a phenomenal scorer. Philon led the Crimson Tide in scoring last season.
Alongside Allen's return, Oats has also brought in a talented freshman class that could make an immediate impact for the Crimson Tide. The first of the group is five-star McDonald's All-American Jaxon Richardson. The six-foot-six wing is known to be one of the most athletic and bouncy freshmen in the class. Richardson does a great job of running the floor, creating easy transition points for himself. This is a perfect match for Oats, who likes to play fast on offense.
Richardson moves exceptionally without the ball, showing that he does not need the ball in his hands to make an immediate impact. Richardson can make a major impact on the glass, consistently creating second-chance opportunities by securing offensive rebounds and finishing putbacks. Defensively, his long wingspan and high motor allow him to contest shots, protect the rim, and bring consistent energy.

ROUND ROCK - Is Weiss' offense even better than anticipated?
While a lot was expected of the star-studded Wolves, who seemingly have high-level college recruits at every skill position, they appeared in midseason form Friday as most UIL schools began the Texas high school football season.
Producing more than 500 yards of offense, which looks even better considering nearly all of that came in three quarters, Weiss topped Round Rock 42-28 in a highly entertaining game at Dragon Stadium.
And though more will be known after their next game against Lake Travis, the Wolves signaled that any preseason hype was certainly deserved.
Jaxon Schad threw for 306 yards and five touchdowns and added 87 yards and a score on the ground. Now a junior, Schad is not only bigger and faster, which he showed in breaking several tackles scrambling, but his accuracy and touch were nearly flawless as he completed 21 of 25 attempts.

The Seattle Seahawks' passing attack was dominated by superstar wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba last season.
However, that may not need to be as much of the case in 2026.
According to NFL.com's Anthony Holzman-Escareno, Smith-Njigba had the highest percentage of a team's receiving yards in the NFL last season at 44.1 percent.
Smith-Njigba's 1,793 receiving yards last season fueled the Seahawks throughout the year. Seattle won the Super Bowl with JSN as their main offensive weapon, and while he won the AP Offensive Player of the Year award thanks in part to receiving a high amount of targets, the Seahawks have other pass-catchers capable of contributing more next season.
Rashid Shaheed is in line to have a bigger role in the Seahawks' offense next season. With the speedster Shaheed, along with AJ Barner, who has much potential, as well as Cooper Kupp and the reliability that he offers the team in the slot on short and intermediate routes, a more balanced passing attack featuring those ancillary stars, as well as the rest of the team's pass-catchers, will go a long way for Seattle in 2026.

There are several different avenues to winning a fantasy championship, but one of the most tried and true is identifying and drafting breakout players. Very few teams that drafted Drake Maye and Jaxon Smith-Njigba at their preseason prices last year fell short of the goal. Finding a superstar in the middle rounds, or an every-week starter at the end of drafts, is an advantage worth pursuing year in and year out.

The reigning Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks are not content to rest on their laurels.
We know this because they have the second-most starters returning from a championship team in the last 15 years. It would be natural for basically the same group of players and coaches to have the same exact ambition: Continuing what they started with February's Lombardi Trophy victory and going for the legendary repeat.
We also know the Seahawks are not content to sit back based on the money they've thrown around this offseason, and even dating back to last summer. Seattle has spent so much money on key members of its current championship core for the foreseeable future that you almost wonder whether the currency they're using is actually Monopoly money. Where does it keep coming from? Oh right, the Seahawks have the Park Place and Boardwalk squares, as well as all the railroads.
With the Thursday news that the Seahawks had extended All-Pro defensive lineman Leonard Williams to a three-year, $90 million contract (with $56 million guaranteed), their plan for the rest of the decade is in full focus. The Seahawks clearly believe they can wring out another championship or two with the current make-up of their team (they are probably correct), because why else would they throw out $634 million in new contracts over the last calendar year? For the fun of it? C'mon now. By total guaranteed money, the recent extensions awarded over just the last several weeks to Williams, star cornerback Devon Witherspoon, and arguably the NFL's best receiver in Jaxon Smith-Njigba come out to over $273 million.
That's, uh, a lot of cheddar. Let's put it this way: If the Seahawks didn't think they could wrack up a dynasty of sorts, they wouldn't be handing out proverbial blank checks like this all at once. (Note: It would also be a lot harder to spend this money if quarterback Sam Darnold wasn't on such a team-friendly contract. But here we are!)

On the first day of classes in Pullman, WSU announced its starting quarterback: UC Davis transfer Caden Pinnick. Many people thought Pinnick was the favorite to win the starting job the minute he stepped on campus, but meaningful separation wasn't made until later in fall camp.
Pinnick will bring a level of dynamism that the Cougars became accustomed to with Jayden de Laura, Cam Ward, and John Mateer. Offensive coordinator Matt Miller will look to leverage Pinnick's elite running ability to create better opportunities for his returning running backs. Last season, when Zevi Eckhaus took over for Jaxon Potter, we saw how much that opened up the run game for Kirby Vorhees, as defenses had to respect Zevi's running ability.
Pinnick turned in an incredible season at FCS UC Davis last year, putting up over 3,200 passing yards and 32 touchdowns, with only 10 interceptions. Not to mention 437 yards rushing. Obviously, Pinnick will be making the jump to a higher level of football, but there is no reason to think he can't make that transition in Washington State's offense.
Pinnick was the runner-up for the Jerry Rice Award, given to the top freshman in the FCS, was the unanimous 2025 Big Sky Freshman of the Year, and earned FCS first-team Freshman All-American honors.
Spring and fall haven't been quite as clean as offensive coordinator Matt Miller might have liked, but as time went along, Pinnick began to take more control of the offense and show his experience. However, it is important to point out that these internal camps greatly favor the defenses, who know your tendencies, and coaches (especially ones as good as Trent Bray) often know what plays are coming.

In Trent Dilfer's coaching return to Lipscomb Academy and TSSAA football, the Mustangs were inches short of a season opening upset.
McCallie's defense stopped Lipscomb Academy at the goal line on 4th and goal to preserve a 27-24 overtime victory on Aug. 21 in Chattanooga.
Lipscomb Academy twice appeared close to scoring on the overtime possession but were denied. On third and goal, Turner White carried inside the 1-yard line but was ruled short. Duke commit Mikel Stephens was stopped inches short on a fourth and goal carry in the game's final play.
And while the Mustangs will drive back up Interstate-24 with a 0-1 record, it was a huge effort against a Division II-AAA power in Dilfer's return after three seasons at UAB.
The Mustangs led 17-7 in the second quarter after a 78-yard touchdown catch by Jaxon Spencer via a reverse pass. But the Blue Tornado slowly chipped away at the deficit.

Jaxon Kohler has a new lease on college life, and now he has a new college team, too.
Kohler, a former Michigan State big man who gained an extra year of eligibility through a Colorado federal court ruling last month, is transferring to BYU, his agent told Rivals on Thursday night. Kohler is from American Fork, Utah.
Kohler, 23, played four seasons for Michigan State, and last year, he averaged 12.5 points and 8.9 rebounds while shooting 38.9% from 3 and 50% from the floor in helping lead the Spartans to the Sweet 16.
His college career seemed to be over when he played for his hometown Utah Jazz in the NBA's Summer League, before the court order came down that granted the entire 2022 recruiting class a fifth year of eligibility.
That same court order led to Oakland point guard Brody Robinson transferring to Creighton, despite Oakland leaving a roster spot open should the courts allowed him an extra season. Robinson was among several college athletes who sued for an extra year of eligibility.

When the courts opened up the transfer portal for players who were originally a part of the 2022 recruiting class, Kentucky basketball set its sights on a few to fill their final roster spot. One of those players was Jaxon Kohler.
Kohler spent four years at Michigan State, but was granted a fifth season by multiple judge's rulings, and he entered the transfer portal. Kentucky made their pitch, but he'll be heading to the BYU Cougars instead, per On3.
BYU has been the favorite to land Kohler since he was allowed to enter the portal. He is a Utah native, and certainly fits with what they do on offense. Mark Pope had hoped to sway him to Lexington, and he fits the Kentucky offense as well, but Kohler will head closer to home instead.
Now, Pope swings his attention to Mark Mitchell, the former LSU Tigers forward. Mitchell is expected to get clarification on his situation tomorrow from a Louisville judge. If he wins his case, the Wildcats are expected to be one of the favorites to land him.
Many will see this as another recruiting loss for Pope, and it is. However, it's one that isn't unexpected, and if Kentucky can land Mitchell, then it will have worked out just fine.

BYU added a massive late addition to its roster as Michigan State big man Jaxon Kohler announced his commitment to BYU. Kohler is eligible to play this coming season as the state of California lawsuit he was part of received a temporary injunction allowing fifth-year graduated players college eligibility. The NCAA may appeal the decision.
The American Fork, Utah native is LDS and was one of the best big men in the Big 10 last year. Kohler spent all four seasons at Michigan State, going from bench player his first two seasons to starting 69 games his last two seasons for Tom Izzo. Kohler went from a back-to-basket big man his first two year two a stretch big his last season. As a senior, Kohler averaged 12.5 points, 8.9 rebounds, and shot 39% from three and and 87% from the FT line. Kohler was 0-5 combined his first two seasons from three, and as a senior shot 58-139. For all players listed at 6-foot-10 or taller, Jaxon was tied for sixth in college basketball last season in threes made (stat courtesy of X account CBBAnalystics). Listed at 6-foot-10 by Michigan State, Kohler primarily played the four in Michigan State's big lineup but will likely primarily play the five spot at BYU.
Had Jaxon entered the transfer portal back in April, he would be a top 10 transfer this cycle. If he would have entered the portal then, he would have been the most impactful player big man BYU could have realistically landed. Just look at what Kohler did when Michigan State played at Michigan, the national champion with three lottery big men in their frontcourt. Kohler scored 23 points and grabbed 8 boards on 10-13 shooting from the floor and 2-4 from three. He led the Spartans in points and rebounds against the vaunted Wolverine front line. Kohler had 12 double doubles last season and was top 5 in the Big 10 and offensive and defensive rebound percentage.
Kohler takes BYU to a fringe top 25 team to a Big 12 **** le **** le contender. I have Jaxon as the best offensive big man in the Big 12 and one of the three best bigs in the league along with Arizona's Mo Krivas and Houston's Jo Tugler.
Jaxon is not a shot blocker, and I have questions about BYU's defense. He does bring effort and great rebounding prowess on that end, however, and should make BYU one the nation's top offenses. No big that is elite on both ends of the floor stays in college more than one year. Jaxon is a fifth-year senior that will be one of the top big men in college basketball. Out of any big man that BYU has pursued this offseason, none would have been more impactful or lead to more wins that Kohler will.

It has been reported for a while that BYU was the frontrunner to land Michigan State transfer Jaxon Kohler, and now it is official, as he committed to the Cougars on Thursday, according to On3's Joe Tipton.
Kohler had a Zoom meeting with Mark Pope and the Kentucky Wildcats coaching staff on Wednesday, but BYU ultimately won out.
The decision makes sense for Kohler, as he could not return to Michigan State because the Spartans had a full roster. Instead, he decided to return to his home state of Utah and become a Cougar.
Pope previously recruited Kohler out of high school when he was at BYU, but Michigan State ultimately won out. Pope tried to recruit him again this offseason, but he was unsuccessful in landing the 6-foot-10, 245-pound forward.
Kentucky fans likely will not have to worry too much about playing against Kohler or BYU, as the most likely way the two teams would meet would be during the NCAA Tournament.

On Tuesday, news broke that Michigan State forward Jaxon Kohler would officially enter the transfer portal after a judge granted a temporary restraining order (TRO) against the NCAA in California.
Now, according to Jack Pilgrim of KSR, Kohler will have a Zoom meeting with the Kentucky Basketball staff on Wednesday.
The 6-foot-10, 245-pound forward has spent all four years of his collegiate career with the Spartans and is now fighting to receive a fifth season of eligibility. This past season, he averaged 12.5 points and 8.9 rebounds per game while shooting 38.9% from deep.
Kohler also showcased his talent against Kentucky in the State Farm Champions Classic, finishing with 20 points on 8-of-12 shooting, including 2-for-2 from 3-point range, while adding five rebounds, two ******* ists and one block in Michigan State's 83-66 victory.
If Kentucky ultimately pursues Kohler, he could fill a role similar to the one Andrew Carr played under Mark Pope. Carr, a 6-foot-9 forward, averaged 10.3 points, 4.7 rebounds and 1.7 ******* ists while providing floor ******* ing and versatility during his lone season with the Wildcats.

For Kentucky Basketball's 15th and final roster spot, Mark Mitchell is priority No. 1 for now, while names like Jaxon Kohler and Keyshawn Hall are other potential transfer candidates to fill that spot.
We now have another name that's worth monitoring for the Wildcats.
On Tuesday, On3's Joe Tipton reported that Yale forward Nick Townsend would enter the transfer portal. The 2026 Ivy League Player of the Year instantly becomes one of the best available players following a four-year career with the Bulldogs.
Now, there's been nothing connecting Kentucky to Townsend just yet, but on paper, he looks like someone who Mark Pope should be taking a hard look at.
A 6-foot-7, 240-pound native of Chappaqua, New York, Townsend averaged 16.3 points on 51.1% shooting (46.3% on 3.2 3-point attempts per game), 7.4 rebounds, 4.3 ****** ists, and 1.1 steals across 33.4 minutes per contest. He shot 48.3% from deep on 1.9 attempts per outing in the 2024-25 season. A big man who can ****** e the floor is something Pope loves having, especially when said player is hitting nearly half of his 3-point attempts.

On Tuesday, On3's Joe Tipton reported that Kohler was officially entering the transfer portal now that he's been granted a TRO against the NCAA as part of the California lawsuit vs. the NCAA.
Not long after, CBS Sports' Jon Rothstein reported that Kentucky was among the schools Kohler is now considering. Joining the Wildcats at Kansas, BYU, and Louisville.
For what it's worth, Tipton and Pete Nakos previously reported that BYU was the favorite to land Kohler, so Kentucky may just be window dressing on the list at this point. The Utah native grew up about 15 miles from BYU's campus, so this would be a homecoming of sorts if it comes to pass.
Still, if things don't work out with Mitchell, Kohler is someone Kentucky should make a run at. The 6-foot-10, 245-pound forward averaged 12.5 points and 8.9 rebounds per game last season while shooting 38.9% from deep on 4.3 attempts per game.

Seahawks cornerback Devon Witherspoon's approach to the game over his first three seasons landed him a big new contract this month.
Witherspoon became the highest-paid player at the position when he agreed to a four-year, $132 million extension. The agreement came a few months after his fellow 2023 first-round pick Jaxon Smith-Njigba landed a huge deal of his own and the two deals cement the players as franchise cornerstones as they come off their Super Bowl win.
During a Monday press conference, Witherspoon was asked if that kind of commitment adds pressure or takes pressure off of him as he heads into the season. Witherspoon fell somewhere in the middle because his feeling is that it won't change anything about his approach to the game.
"I think it's a little bit of both, but I don't think it does nothing to me," Witherspoon said. "I'm going to be me every day. Ain't nothing going to change about me, so I don't really see it no type of way."
Witherspoon's approach has been a winning one so far and not breaking something that doesn't need fixing should be a popular opinion about how to approach the 2026 campaign.

Is Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba the player to select with a middle-round pick in fantasy football drafts this year?
According to Fantasy Sports on SI's Gray Devo, Smith-Niigba is the ideal player to select with the No. 6 overall pick in 12-man fantasy football PPR league drafts.
"Njigba in 2025 had 119 receptions for 1,793 yards and 10 TDs," Devo said. "There is upside for him to have even a better season in fantasy this year with Seattle losing one of their biggest offensive weapons in the 2026 offseason, RB Kenneth Walker III. With his departure, even more offensive responsibility could fall on him."
Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley, New York Giants WR Malik Nabers, New York Jets RB Breece Hall, San Francisco 49ers WR Mike Evans, New England Patriots RB TreVeyon Henderson and 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy were selected as the perfect players to draft from rounds 2-7 respectively.
Smith-Njigba has the potential to be the most productive fantasy football player in PPR leagues next season. Thus, taking him with the No. 6 overall pick has upside to it, even as a first-round star.

BYU's Fall Semester is 2.5 weeks away from starting, so hopefully this will be the last of these offseason notebooks I write focusing on this coming season's roster. BYU has two open roster spots, and all eyes are on the potential addition of Michigan State big man Jaxon Kohler to potentially fill out the roster.

I've already wrote extensively about Jaxon. The 6-foot-10 Michigan State big man would be a huge addition to BYU's roster and put BYU in contender status for a Big 12 ****** le. Jaxon would be one of the top big men in the Big 12 and single-handedly raise BYU's ceiling to a team that could go deep in the NCAA Tournament. Jaxon can score on the block, is one the best big man shooters in college basketball, and is a high-level rebounder. No other big BYU pursued this offseason would raise BYU's ceiling more than Jaxon Kohler. He would lead BYU in rebounding and probably be the favorite to be second in scoring behind Rob Wright. I'd have Jaxon as the best offensive big man in the Big 12 and one of the three best bigs in the league along with Arizona's Mo Krivas and Houston's Jo Tugler.
As it stands right now due to various state-level court injunctions, Jaxon Kohler can play a fifth year but can only do so at Michigan State. He and several other players are part of a California injunction that, if granted, would allow him to enter the transfer portal. All other state-level injunctions such as Ohio and Tennessee have granted in favor of the players and allowed them to play a fifth year and enter the transfer portal. Odds are high that the court will rule in the players favor and Jaxon will be able to enter the portal. The NCAA has maintained its stance that it opposes the courts rulings, and we should get a federal ruling early next week from the tenth circuit in the Colorado case that was recently ruled on. If the courts rule against the NCAA again in that case, that could force the NCAA to finally back off.
Based on several conversations I've had, I have BYU as the favorite to land Jaxon if he is indeed eligible to play. Schools such as Kentucky, Kansas, Louisville and several others have made a strong push, but BYU has stood above the rest. Kevin Young has made a very positive impression on Jaxon and there is a strong pull for Jaxon to stay close to home for his final season of college. Additionally, BYU has been able to raise its NIL offer in the past couple weeks to be more competitive for Jaxon, which was the last big hurdle. BYU has all the basketball and home stuff in its favor, now they have made the money less of a blocker. While BYU is not the highest bidder, BYU is in the ballpark to not have such a wide gap versus other schools. As it stands today I see Louisville as the strongest opposition to BYU due to a strong NIL offer they recently proposed, but BYU has done all the right things here. Once Jaxon gets eligibility, I anticipate he would commit to a school shortly after. That could come as soon as this week.

Newly minted Devon Witherspoon — who agreed to a record $132 million contract extension with $101 million guaranteed Saturday morning — plus Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Sam Darnold, Cooper Kupp, Leonard Williams and the Super Bowl-champion starters did pregame warmups in full pads.
All 22 expected starters on offense and defense when Seattle begins defense of its Super Bowl **** le Sept. 9 in the NFL season opener against New England on this same field watched this preseason game from the sideline in their jerseys, no pads and white team caps.
The fullest action the starters are likely to get this preseason will be Friday when they scrimmage the Tennessee **** ans' starters in a joint practice in Nashville.
They spent Saturday night running off the sideline, jumping up and down and celebrating big plays by their backups.
One of the two biggest one was wide receiver Rashad Rochelle's 52-yard punt return weaving through Cowboys late in the third quarter. Middle linebacker Ernest Jones and Witherspoon were the first Seahawks off the sideline to congratulate Rochelle, an undrafted rookie from Indiana State. Jones slapped at him with a towel.
