New York governor Kathy Hochul will today (Monday) launch an 88-person exploratory committee to report on the feasibility and challenges of a formal bid to host the Winter Olympic Games, according to people with knowledge of the announcement who spoke anonymously as they were not authorized to do so publicly.
The potential bid would see New York City and Lake Placid partner to host the 2042 edition.
Earlier this year, Gov. Hochul told The Athletic that "significant" meetings had taken place as she seeks to return the Winter Olympics to New York state for the first time since 1980, which is best remembered for the Miracle on Ice when the U.S. hockey team defeated the Soviet Union. Gov. Hochul, while announcing the committee today, will also announce a $2.5 million funding commitment to create a monument in Lake Placid in honor of the Miracle on Ice team.
The Lake Placid-New York City Olympic & Paralympic Winter Games Exploratory Committee will have an eight-strong leadership group, which will include Ashley Walden, the president and CEO of the Olympic Regional Development Authority, as well as representation from the offices of Senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand (both Democrats), sources said. It will also include Julie Su, appointed deputy mayor for economic justice of New York City by mayor Zohran Mamdani, as well as Hope Knight, the president of Empire State Development, the New York state economic development arm.
There is a 16-member sub-committee on finance, which includes John Collins, co-owner and operating partner of the New York Islanders, and Josh Cohen, the son of New York Mets owner Steve Cohen, who works as the team's vice president of business development. Randy Levine, the owner of the New York Yankees, is one of 12 members of a legal sub-committee, which also includes Robert Landau, the executive vice-president of NBC Universal, the long-time broadcaster of the Olympics in the United States.

Hasan Piker came to the defense of children's entertainer Ms. Rachel after Fox News warned parents against her content, blasting the network for finding "two people who don't want children to be slaughtered" unacceptable.
The drama started on Fox News' "The Big Weekend Show," when contributor Tomi Lahren weighed in on Ms. Rachel (also known as Rachel Anne Accurso)'s past collaborations with left-wing figures, including New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani.
"I'd also say this person here on your screen is Hasan Piker in overalls and a stupid headband," Lahren noted during the conversation. "So, if that's what you want your kids to be watching, if that's what you want to be forming their ideas and their world view on, by all means."
As Lahren went on, she took aim at Ms. Rachel's appearance, adding, "There she looks age appropriate in that one photo."
"Listen, you can be a leftie and you can be like, a kids' educator, right? And you can be like, 'I'm a Democrat,' whatever," she continued. "But when you go so far as to advocate for things like Hamas, Palestine and you cloud people's judgement on what exactly a genocide is and who's to blame and you talk about Israel then you are not a children's educator anymore. You're a political activist. Like I said, Hasan Piker in a headband and overalls. So, parents, if that's what you want, I guess keep watching Ms. Rachel."

Striking a blow to Mayor Mamdani’s rollout of his signature pied-à-terre tax, a New York City judge on Tuesday ruled in favor of owners of pricey second homes and ordered the city to restart the process.
Staten Island Supreme Court Justice Wayne Ozzi found that notices the city mailed to homeowners informing them that they may be subject to the surcharge were unlawful and had to be canceled and re-sent. He also ruled that a supplemental property tax roll posted online must be taken down.
“No crime is involved here, but homeowners are being substantially harmed and penalized needlessly,” Ozzi wrote in his 22-page decision, referring to the city’s controversial rollout of the tax on high-value second homes.

Somewhere between the two sits the uneasy economics of the modern US Open, where a $65 ticket with no guaranteed seat on any court can fetch more than five times that amount on the tournament's resale marketplace.
For generations the US Open has traded on its reputation as the people's slam. Take the 7 train to Queens, buy a grounds pass and spend the day milling about within a few feet of the world's best tennis players. Mohan Bhagwat, chief of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), is scheduled to speak at a Manhattan event on Saturday, according to the event's website.
"I don't support the rally, but I don't know if the city has any jurisdiction on cancelling a private event," Mamdani, who is the first Muslim and Indian American mayor of New York City, said when asked if the event should be cancelled.
"The vision of India that I was taught by my family and one that I grew up being very familiar with was of a pluralistic society of a secular Republic that believed in the belonging of each and every person who was from India. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced Tuesday, Aug. 25, that his office will offer 1,000 city residents "affordable" tickets to the upcoming US Open tennis tournament.
"Sports belong to the people," Mamdani said in a statement announcing the upcoming ticket release. "If the world's best tennis players are coming to our city, New Yorkers should be able to see them play."
The city's Democratic Socialist mayor was elected on the promise of making the city affordable and the move to offer discounted tickets to one of the world's most popular sporting events is his latest effort to even the field for New Yorkers.
Discounted tickets will become available for city residents to purchase starting at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 26. They will be offered online on a first-come, first-serve basis. Residents can buy up to two tickets for $100 each to matches taking place between Aug. 30 and Sept. 8.
The tickets will allow New Yorkers to potentially see great players including defending champions Carlos Alcaraz and Aryna Sabalenka for hundreds of dollars less than at retail prices. Tickets to the opening session of the tournament sold through the US Open start at $239 and go up to over $1,200, as of the evening of Aug. 25.

Major sporting events in the New York/N ew Jersey are have **** aulted by outrageous ticket prices this summer. During the NBA Finals, ticket prices got so out of control that U.S. President Donald Trump faced major backlash for not showing sympathy for fans who had been priced out.

The Department of Homeland Security is investigating a nonprofit with connections to New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani for potentially providing donor funds to a sanctioned Palestinian group, the New York Post reported Friday.
The report says federal authorities are probing the U.K.-based organization known only as PFF, which has a roughly $100 million war chest used to support anti-Israel causes. It also may have contributed donor funds to Al-Haq, a Palestinian group sanctioned by the U.S., the Post reported.

Of all the charismatic, 34-year-old Mayor's initiatives aimed at lowering living costs, the one that's garnered the most coverage is his proposal to get Gotham into the grocery business.
The city-owned food store initiative looks so radical, even for this avowed democratic socialist, because it puts a city in direct competition versus an immense, entrenched private industry. On his other big "affordability" initiatives, providing free bus service and freezing rent on one million apartments, Mamdani's simply using his regulatory and budget powers in the Democratic mayors' traditional vein of tightening price controls on housing and delivering more freebees
This one's different: It's extraordinarily rare for a municipality to challenge local businesses by starting its own enterprises that aim to do the same thing. The only major example: city-backed companies that battle the Verizons and Comcasts to supply broadband. They're all either struggling, or already flopped.
