College football is unpredictable and delightful, which is why we live for what happens on Saturdays. And Week 2 absolutely delivered, from a stunner in Stillwater to an instant classic in Austin.
Each Sunday, I'll publish my biggest takeaways from the college football weekend. I'll highlight the most interesting storylines, track College Football Playoff contenders and specifically shout out individual and team performances that deserve the spotlight.
He beat one of college football's bluest bluebloods. I know he took the Longhorns to the semifinals of the College Football Playoff in back-to-back seasons, but we live in a what-have-you-done-for-me-lately world. And lately, Texas had been overhyped and under-delivering — with three losses to Georgia since joining the SEC, and two losses to Ohio State (in the CFP and last year's season-opener). After starting last year as the preseason No. 1 team, Texas didn't even make the CFP.
But Saturday was different, even after a first half that felt all too familiar. Arch Manning delivered with the game on the line. Hollywood Smothers showed the value of adding the transfer portal's best available running back. And Sarkisian got the kind of win that helps a head coach sleep at night. The kind of win that gives a team a nice cushion heading into conference play, knowing that its CFP resume has a pretty shiny centerpiece.
One note: Sark might want to work on his postgame interview etiquette.

Facing 4th-and-1 with a four-point lead and 1:54 left on the clock, Duke decided to go for the jugular and clinch the game.
The 60,000-plus people in Gies Memorial Stadium knew where the ball was going. Illinois' defense knew who was getting the ball. Duke's offense definitely knew who they trusted.
Nate Sheppard, who had already scored three touchdowns on the day, ran up the middle for two yards, and the Blue Devils were able to run out the clock for a massive 31-27 victory in Champaign against the Fighting Illini.
"I think everybody knew right there where the ball was going," Sheppard said. "I think the whole stadium knew where the ball was going. It was just a matter of could we execute."
It was the 24th carry of Sheppard's day, with the sophomore running for 147 yards and a touchdown while also catching five passes for 41 yards and two scores. Despite the three trips to the end zone, his most impressive run might have been the one that set up his first touchdown of the game: a 19-yard run where he continued to evade would-be tacklers somehow and keep his balance.

India and Afghanistan start their three-match T20I series at Arun Jaitley Stadium on Sunday.
Although Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) is hosting the series, the matches are being played in India as part of the arrangement between the two boards.
The series ends on September 17, coinciding with the beginning of the cricket tournament at the 2026 Asian Games in ***** an beginning September 24.
India, with Shreyas Iyer as their captain, would like to start the series off on the right foot against Afghanistan, who would be led by Ibrahim Zadran.

Duke improved to 2-0 on the season with a hard-fought 31-27 victory over Illinois on the road in Champaign in a sold out Gies Memorial Stadium. A non-conference Power Four win is a huge accomplishment in Week Two of the season.
Quarterback Walker Eget completed 15 of 21 passes for 206 yards and three touchdowns. Nate Sheppard rushed 24 times for 147 yards and one touchdown, and caught five passes for 41 yards and two touchdowns. Wide receiver Jonah Burton caught four passes for 76 yards and a touchdown.
Cornerback Evan Smith accounted for the game's only turnover when he intercepted a pass from Illinois quarterback Katin Houser.
Play One: Illinois was leading 17-7 and Duke was facing a 4th down and four yards to go with nine minutes and 41 seconds remaining in the 2nd quarter. Duke lined up to punt but hiked the ball to Nate Sheppard instead of punter Kade Reynoldson and Sheppard ran for 15 yards and a 1st down. This play switched momentum from the Illini to the Blue Devils. Four plays later Nate Sheppard rushed two yards for a touchdown cutting the Illini lead to 17-14.
Play Two: At the eight minutes and 28 seconds mark of the 1st quarter, quarterback Walker Eget hit wide receiver Jonah Burton for a 12 yards touchdown pass to tie the game at 7-7. Burton did a great job securing the ball as he went to the ground.

Derek Mason and Middle Tennessee State football will be seeking their fourth consecutive victory, dating back to last season, when the Blue Raiders travel to Marshall on Sept. 12 (6 p.m. CT, ESPN+).
A win over the Thundering Herd would also give MTSU back-to-back wins to begin a season for the first time since 2001.
MTSU (1-0) is coming off a 38-14 win over Murray State in its opener while Marshall (0-1) lost 45-0 to Penn State in Week 1. Marshall won last year's game 42-28 in Murfreesboro.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill — Katin Houser and the Illini are off to a hot start against the Blue Devils. It the first drive of the game, Illinois methodically picked apart the Duke defense and ended the 9-play drive with a Collin Dixon touchdown.
Houser looked ultra efficient throwing 5-5 for 55 passing yards. His connection with Dixon was also on display, who caught three passes for 31 yards.
The cherry on top being the 13-yard strike to the back of the end zone with Dixon making the athletic grab. The kick was good giving Illinois the 7-0 lead.

The White Sox beat the Cleveland Blues, 12-4, in Chicago to clinch the franchise's first pennant. (The American League would not be recognized as an official major league until 1901, however.) Roy Patterson got the win in the game.
The season seemed to set the tone for the franchise, with exceptional pitching and defense — and just enough hitting to win games. Cleveland manager Jimmy McAleer said as much after the Sox clinched against his club: "It's the strangest thing that ever happened. A club with no good batsman to win a flag! Why, such a thing was never heard of before. [Dick] Padden has done most of it. He has been the whole works, and has shown himself a born general. The pitchers did the rest, with special credit to that lad Patterson."
Brett Ballantini devoted an episode of South Side Sox's Flashback to this win, back in 2019.

Ultimately, the White Sox did not prevail for the pennant, but don't say they didn't put up a fight. Arriving at Detroit's Bennett Park for a five-game set against the first-place Tigers and behind by three games, the White Sox won the opener, then played four consecutive extra-inning games to finish out the series, splitting them. On this day, the White Sox got back to just two games out with a 2-1 victory in 10 innings. Frank Smith not only went the distance for his 12th win on the season, he singled in the game-winner in the top of the 10th.
The White Sox continued a three-way fight for the pennant (with Cleveland as well), and the season came down to the last day, hosting Detroit. Had the White Sox not been blown out in the finale, they would have finished tied with (but percentage points ahead of) Cleveland and a half-game in front of the Tigers for the pennant.

There is a particular kind of quiet that follows a quarterback who hasn't needed to be loud. Marcus Washington Jr. throws touchdowns the way some kids collect grades—steadily, without much fuss, until one day the transcript is too good to ignore. The three-star, 2029 First Team MaxPreps All-American out of Cajon (Calif.), has spent this season quietly ******* embling one of the most productive stat lines in the country, and this weekend he trades the Southern California sun for the SEC's version of theater when he makes his way back to Lexington for Kentucky football's showdown with Alabama at Kroger Field.
Call it a homecoming, even if his mailing address says otherwise. Washington camped in the Bluegrass this past summer, and the visit left a mark. He is coming back not as a tourist, but as a young man doing due diligence on a decision that will shape the next four years of his life—and doing it the way the good ones always have, on his own clock, gathering information instead of chasing headlines.
THE NUMBERS DON'T WHISPER.
Whatever Washington is doing quietly, the box score is not. Last week alone he was 14 of 25 for 219 yards and a touchdown through the air, then shredded the edges for 138 yards and four more scores on the ground—the kind of two-way workload that makes opposing coordinators lose sleep and college recruiters lose their composure. Through three games this fall, he has piled up 1,176 total yards and 13 touchdowns, a pace that reads less like a high school box score and more like a mid-major Saturday.
Numbers like that don't need adjectives. They need context, and the context is this: Washington isn't just a runner who can throw or a thrower who can run. He is a West Coast problem that programs from four time zones away are now trying to solve, and Kentucky is convinced it has the answer.

Regular readers know that I've followed one of the great Cy Young horse races in recent memory, with Cam Schlittler going great start-for-great start with the Blue Jays' Dylan Cease. We got a little bit of separation this week, as the Athletics touched up Cease for four runs in five innings on Monday, and then Schlittler allowed just a solo shot in seven frames against the Rockies on Tuesday. Cam has crept just ahead by fWAR, enjoys a considerable lead in bWAR, and right now I think would end up at the top of most voters' ballots.
But something struck me in the aftermath of Cam's night against Colorado, the same night that Aaron Judge returned to the lineup. Cam Schlittler isn't just the Cy Young favorite, but he's built himself an MVP case. No pitcher has won the award since Clayton Kershaw for the 2014 Dodgers, and the last AL winner was 2011 Justin Verlander. Yordan Alvarez is in the hunt for the first Triple Crown since Miguel Cabrera, Bobby Witt Jr. is probably the best overall player in the league, and if Junior Caminero tops the AL in home runs and plays on the Junior Circuit's best team, he probably gets his share of votes too.
And yet here's the thing: Cam stacks up fairly against all three of them!
Let's take Yordan, who I think has the inside track on the award right now. Schlittler's 0.1 fWAR back, a difference that is literally negligible, and more than three-quarters of a win better by bWAR. Alvarez's candidacy is based around the Triple Crown, probably being the best hitter in baseball, and dragging what we thought was a finally-deflated Houston Astros team to a division ****** le. ****** py AL West or not, that is exactly the blueprint for an MVP, if one for a slightly older voter.
Should Alvarez not win the Triple Crown, he loses a bit of his case, though he's likely still the best hitter in the game on a division winner, one who will have played in the neighborhood of 155 games. That's the big thing both undercutting Witt's MVP claim while bolstering his position as best all-around player — the Kansas City shortstop has only played 128 games at time of writing, yet leads the league in fWAR and bWAR among position players. With a solid-but-not-spectacular 18 homers and 124 wRC+, the parts of his game beyond hitting are doing the heavy lifting there as well. All that and the fact that the Royals are so bad work against him when it comes to end of season awards though, and Bobby seems cursed to be the Dave Stieb of shortstops.

The Dodgers on Friday called up phenom Josue De Paula, their top prospect, and placed Shohei Ohtani on the 15-day injured list. Those were the expected moves, and took care of the active-roster component. But to make room on the 40-man roster for De Paula, the Dodgers transferred left-hander Eric Lauer to the 60-day injured list.
Lauer had been on the 15-day injured list with left elbow inflammation since September 2, one day after allowing seven runs in three innings in his worst start since joining the Dodgers. Moving him to the 60-day injured list means Lauer won't be eligible to pitch in the postseason. His 2026 campaign has concluded.
The 31-year-old left-hander was acquired from the Toronto Blue Jays on May 17 after Lauer was designated for **** ignment by Toronto, with the Jays paying all but $600,000 of his remaining $3.1 million salary the rest of the way. The Dodgers won each of Lauer's first nine appearances with the team, a stretch in which he did not allow more than three runs in any outing.
Lauer had two blow-up starts — six runs in four innings on August 5 at Wrigley Field, September 1 at home vs. Cardinals — but mostly did everything that was asked of him, lasting at least six innings in seven of his 13 outings, including 11 starts. In all, Lauer had a 4.50 ERA and 4.48 xERA in 72 innings with the Dodgers. Combining his numbers with the Blue Jays, Lauer on the season had a 5.23 ERA and 5.03 xERA in 22 games, including 18 starts, with 72 strikeouts and 35 walks in 108 1/3 innings, with 26 home runs allowed.
Ohtani was officially placed on the injured list with right biceps inflammation, which is what manager Dave Roberts mentioned Ohtani aggravated on a swing in Monday's game against the Cincinnati Reds, the only one of an eight-game stretch in which Ohtani played.

The FedExCup Fall series tees off at the The Cliffs at Walnut Cove next week as the PGA Tour's inaugural Biltmore Championship Asheville features plenty of big names.
The Blue Ridge Mountains will serve as a backdrop for U.S. Presidents Cup players Justin Thomas, Jacob Bridgeman and Jackson Koivun, who will be tuning up their games ahead of Medinah after getting the nod from captain Brandt Snedeker earlier in the month.
Also in the field are Billy Horschel and Lucas Glover, players No. 100 and No. 101 in the FedExCup points with less than a dozen events left to play this year. Those who sit inside the top 100 secure Tour cards for 2027, while players ranked 101st through 125th earn conditional status.

Former Duke Blue Devil Mark Williams and the Phoenix Suns have some bad news: Williams suffered a torn labrum in his left shoulder, was operated on Thursday, and is expected to be out for several months.
That's terrible news for Williams, but it could be very positive news for fellow Brotherhood member Khaman Maluach.
Expected to be Williams' understudy and to eventually become the starting center for the Suns, now there's a lot of pressure on Maluach to produce now.
He entered the NBA last year as a very raw rookie, but like we saw at Duke, he's a fast study. He got a lot out of his time in the G League, and we expect he'll continue his rapid improvement.

We usually say you have to wait and see the kit on the payers before you judge it – in this case, it's hard to see us convincing us.

To say that Kyle Tucker has underperformed in his first season with the Los Angeles Dodgers would be a massive understatement. He entered the Dodgers' Friday night clash against the Miami Marlins with an OPS of .684 on the season. This was certainly not what the Dodgers expected to get from Tucker after they signed him to a four-year, $240 million contract.
But Tucker's play is perking up as of late. Over his past two games, he's gone 6-8 from the plate, including a 3-3 night on Friday in a 6-2 win over the Miami Marlins. Not only was Tucker perfect from the plate on Friday, he also drove in five runs, including four in just one swing in the seventh inning when he hit his first grand slam in Dodger Blue.
For as much excitement as there is over Tucker's uptick in play, the Dodgers right fielder is trying to keep a level head as he tries to end the 2026 MLB regular season on a high note.

After transferring from Crown Point in Indiana, junior tight end Ty Kennedy had to carve out a role for himself on a Mount Carmel offense that was already loaded with returning stars.
For Kennedy, though, the transition to a new team, a new school and a new state has been a smooth one.
"I wouldn't say it was hard at all," Kennedy said. "The culture here, you just have to buy into it. This place is great. I couldn't ask for anything better. Teammates, coaches. Coach (Jordan) Lynch is obviously a mastermind on the offensive side of the ball. All my teammates are great.
"It's amazing."
Kennedy is emerging as yet another playmaker for the Caravan. He hauled in four catches for 66 yards and two touchdowns Friday night as host Mount Carmel pulled away late for a 56-26 Catholic League Blue win over Marist in Chicago.

COLONIE - The Christian Brothers Academy football team waited a long time to get back on the field against Saratoga Springs. Friday night, the Brothers held a seven-point lead in the fourth quarter when CBA coach Bobby Burns decided it was best to play keep away.
The Blue Streaks had just scored a touchdown on a fourth-down play and CBA was determined to run off the final 7:42 off the clock. That meant going for it on a fourth-and-5 play from the CBA 36-yard line. The Brothers managed to pick up the first down as senior quarterback Matt Kowalski connected with junior receiver Jack Hulett for five yards. CBA proceeded to run off the remaining time to register a 21-14 Class AA victory.
"I had my coaches yelling in my ear the whole night that we could run that," Burns said regarding the fourth-down gamble. "I was a little concerned about (Saratoga Springs junior defensive end Cam Toomey) on the edge with him getting a hand on it and swatting it down. If we don't get that, it changes a lot of the game."
"It definitely means a lot that the coaches have trust in us," Hulett said. "We work hard and they trust we will get the job done."
CBA entered the Section 2 Class AA playoffs in 2025 as the No. 1 seed with the program seeking a fifth consecutive sectional championship. Saratoga Springs emerged with a 14-13 victory in a driving rainstorm at Colonie High School. In the rematch, the Brothers (2-0 overall, 1-0 Class AA) prevailed in a game where the two teams combined for 26 penalties.
