The casual Mexican restaurant sector has faced a challenging year in 2026, as dining chains have closed underperforming locations, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection to reorganize their businesses, and in at least one case, filed for Chapter 7 liquidation to shut down all operations.
Once popular Mexican chain On the Border ceased operations in 2026, after closing all of its locations before its operating company, OTB Hospitality, filed for Chapter 7 liquidation on June 19, 2026, the company shared in a press release.
Another chain facing financial distress is Session Taco, a St. Louis-based casual Mexican dining chain, which closed one of its restaurant locations for the second time in seven months. The chain has not filed for bankruptcy.
The Mexican chain, originally branded Mission Taco Joint until a 2023 name change, closed its Sobremesa restaurant in St. Charles, Mo., on Sept. 13 after only three months of operation, according to its Facebook page.
The St. Charles location was previously branded as Session Taco until the company closed the restaurant on Feb. 13 to redesign and rebrand the restaurant as Sobremesa before reopening in June 2026.

London-based Velocity has raised an additional $10 million, extending its Series A to $48 million at a $200 million post-money valuation, with participation from Visa Ventures, Circle Ventures, and Ripple. The fresh capital will fund infrastructure connecting stablecoins to existing payment networks, settlement systems, and corporate treasury operations.
The extension follows a $38 million Series A announced in July, which CEO Eric Queathem said was oversubscribed. Haun Ventures, Translink Capital, and Mirana Ventures also joined the extension round, pushing the total investor list well beyond typical crypto-native venture backers into strategic corporate money from a card network and a stablecoin issuer directly.
Velocity's platform lets payment companies and banks use stablecoins for settlement, liquidity, and treasury operations without ripping out the systems they already run. The White House on Thursday withdrew the nomination of Oklahoma state trooper Lance Schroyer to lead Immigration and Customs Enforcement after a Republican blocked his confirmation hearing.
Schroyer's nomination stalled after Senate Homeland Security Chair Rand Paul (R-Ky.), a foe of Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, requested that the Department of Homeland Security provide his committee with more information about its investigation into two ICE and Border Patrol agents accused of killing two U.S. citizens in Minneapolis in January.
Paul, who as chair controls the committee's hearing and markup agenda, did not oppose Schroyer's nomination, per Drew Carmichael, a spokesperson for the senator.
Schroyer was a surprise pick to lead ICE. He had no experience leading a major law enforcement agency, let alone an organization the size of ICE. But Schroyer has close ties with the DHS secretary. Schroyer at one point led Mullin's security detail and Mullin made Schroyer a senior adviser at DHS.
The White House and DHS did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

On the domestic side, capacity has been exiting the truckload and intermodal markets, and spot rates and tender rejections moved higher late in the quarter. Radiant also launched a new independent agent program at Radiant Road & Rail during the quarter, extending its freight forwarding agent network into truck brokerage and intermodal, while Navegate is gaining traction, with one enterprise customer now managing more than 1,400 vendors on the platform.
The full-year numbers tell a different story than the quarter does. Late last week, Saudi Arabia was forced to temporarily shut down the East-West oil pipeline following drone attacks launched from the territory of Iraq close to the Iranian border on Thursday. The shutdown of the pipeline is a precautionary measure, after the attacks resulted in a number of injuries, the world's top crude oil exporter said.
The 750-mile-long East-West pipeline became Saudi Arabia's vital oil route to bypass the Strait of Hormuz after the Middle East conflict started and Hormuz was closed to shipping traffic. Thanks to the East-West pipeline, the Kingdom has managed to re-route most of its crude loadings from the western ports in the Persian Gulf to the Red Sea port of Yanbu.
Apart from announcing the shutdown of the pipeline and condemning the attacks, Saudi Arabia has not officially updated the market either on the extent of the damage or the timelines for repairs.
The repairs could take three to five weeks, two regional officials briefed on the matter told The ******* ociated Press.

Comedian and podcast host Bill Maher called out deep-blue California on Monday and said the state's voters would always support a Democrat, even if their policies were failing, as long as President Donald Trump was ******* ociated with the Republican Party.
During an interview on "Club Random" with David Foster, Maher argued that California would never vote for a Republican as long as Trump was involved in the party.

CAIRO (AP) — Saudi Arabia accused Yemen's Iran-backed Houthi rebels overnight of trying to attack Islam's holiest city, prompting condemnation from countries in the region but no sign of military support. The kingdom, a key U.S. ally, declared Mecca a "red line" as it slid deeper into the new front of the Iran war.
With the world's biggest oil exporter under fire from the rebels backed by the Saudis' regional adversary, Tehran, the kingdom needs a safe outlet for its crude as well as military ******* istance. A path to either one remains unclear.
A crucial Saudi pipeline has reportedly been shut down for weeks after an attack by Iranian-backed militias in Iraq. The Yemen-based Houthis have been targeting infrastructure in the kingdom as well as its shipping on the Red Sea, where they have seized several islands on the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. And Iran is still targeting ships in the Strait of Hormuz. Oil prices remain above $100 a barrel.
The Houthis denied firing drones toward Mecca, about 1,100 kilometers (680 miles) from Yemen's border. The Saudis said they intercepted and destroyed the drone before it entered the airspace over the birthplace of the Prophet Muhammad.
The attacks are the first test of a new defense pact among Saudi Arabia, NATO member Turkey and nuclear power Pakistan. But officials from Turkey and Pakistan told The ******* ociated Press they have not received a Saudi request for support in response to the Houthis' escalation.

Former US CIA director David Petraeus was at a Ukrainian train station at the very moment a Russian drone struck a passenger train on Sunday, shortly after a diplomatic train carrying former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson and other foreign dignitaries had passed through.
Kyiv framed the attack as evidence of the increased threat Russia's Vladimir Putin poses to Europe, with Ukraine's rail operator saying it was "quite likely" a targeted attack.
The diplomatic train carrying Johnson, European security officials and other former leaders from Kyiv to Poland had made an early departure from Yahodyn station –– about two kilometers (1.2 miles) from the Polish border –– due to the "constant threat of Russian strikes," said Ukrainian Railways. It had already crossed into Poland by the time of the attack.
Petraeus was traveling on a separate train which was still at Yahodyn station, a Ukrainian Railways statement said. CNN has reached out to Petraeus for comment.
The rail operator said that while it was still clarifying details, it is "quite likely" that the Russian drone could have deliberately targeted the officials' train.

White House border czar Tom Homan confirmed on "The Sunday Briefing" that the Department of Homeland Security is looking into allegations involving Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., but would not disclose details about what he described as an "ongoing criminal investigation."
Pressed on whether the federal government has evidence that Omar committed immigration or naturalization fraud, Homan declined to comment.

HONG KONG, Sept 14 (Reuters) - The Himalayas are approaching a tipping point as glaciers melt faster than a decade ago, threatening ‌water security as the region approaches "peak water" by mid-century, according to ‌a study released this month.
The findings come after the collapse of a Himalayan glacier in late August along the Nepal-Tibet border, which caused cascading landslides and flash floods in the valleys below. At least 1,300 people have been confirmed dead and more than 5,300 are missing across Nepal and China's Tibet region.
As glaciers ‌retreat, they are leaving ⁠behind unstable glacial lakes held back by little more than loose rock and ice, above valleys where millions of ⁠people live, the study found.
The study was produced by Systemiq, a sustainability advisory firm, together with the Integrated Mountain Initiative, the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development, and India's G.B. Pant National Institute of Himalayan Environment.
Himalayan glacier mass loss ‌had accelerated in recent decades, while only 21 glaciers were currently monitored on the ground out of an estimated 40,000 glaciers across the Hindu Kush-Himalaya region, a vast mountain system spanning eight countries from Afghanistan to Myanmar, the study found.

Stellantis N.V. (NYSE:STLA)'s long-idled Belvidere ******* embly Plant in Illinois has been a case study for how a plant reopening can be pushed further into the future. The plant has been dormant since February 2023, when Stellantis N.V. (NYSE:STLA) ended the Jeep Cherokee production and laid off over 1,300 employees. A 2027 production target for Belvidere has now shifted, with Stellantis targeting pilot production of the next-generation Cherokee in the first half of 2028 and retail production in the second half of 2029, even as Stellantis portrays the news as a larger investment rather than a delay.
Stellantis N.V. (NYSE:STLA) announced an increase in its Belvidere investment to more than $800 million, up from a previous commitment of $600 million or more, and confirmed that the plant will produce the next-generation Jeep Cherokee on its new STLA One platform, the first vehicle built in the US on that modular design, which the company claims will improve manufacturing efficiency and reduce costs.

Payne described it as a "lose-lose scenario," claiming Stellantis' 2023 commitment to keep Brampton staffed had been broken.
The two stories are directly related. Brampton had been scheduled to build the Jeep Compass, with retooling beginning in early 2024 before Stellantis N.V. (NYSE:STLA) paused it in 2025 and then, that October, moved Compass manufacturing to the US completely, the same reassignment that sent the model to Belvidere.

Missouri (2-0) handed the Jayhawks (1-1) a 38-21 defeat that could have looked even more lopsided had a head-turning shot to the end zone not fallen incomplete in the game's waning moments at David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium in Lawrence.
That potential death knell resulted from Drinkwitz's frustration toward Kansas and the way the Jayhawks brazenly approached the programs' longstanding yet complicated rivalry in the lead-up to the matchup.
Kansas leaned into the Civil War history between the two states, posting a pregame hype video framed as "heroes vs. villains" with the social media caption, "It is that deep." Drinkwitz wasn't amused and fundamentally disagreed.
"I get there's a past to it, but why are we stirring that bull **** up? It's 9/11," Drinkwitz said postgame on Friday, the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks.
