At the beginning of 2026, the biggest question surrounding the Federal Reserve and interest rates was whether the Fed would cut its target rate at some point this year. However, it's become increasingly clear that a rate cut won't happen any time soon. In fact, it's possible that the Fed may increase its benchmark rate before the year is over.
Following the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC)'s most recent meeting in July, under the leadership of new Fed Chair Kevin Warsh, the committee announced its decision to maintain the target range for the federal funds rate at 3.50%-3.75%.
In its statement, the committee noted that "inflation remains elevated relative to the Committee's 2 percent goal, in part reflecting supply shocks that have driven price increases in certain sectors, including energy. The Committee will deliver price stability."
The Fed has not cut rates since late 2025, yet interest rates on consumer loans and bank accounts steadily decreased throughout 2026 — at least, until recently. Recent rate increases are a sign that the market is already pricing in a rate hike. And with a few more Fed meetings on the calendar for the remainder of 2026, consumers are wondering how potential rate changes could impact their bottom lines.

US stocks fell for a second day in a row on Tuesday as investors braced for the Federal Reserve's interest rate decision on Wednesday and monitored the fallout from Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei's essay on AI safety fears.
The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite (^IXIC) declined 0.8% while the Dow Jones Industrial Average (^DJI) dropped 0.7%. The S&P 500 (^GSPC) tumbled more than 0.4%.
Oil prices ticked back up, with Brent crude (BZ=F) and WTI crude (CL=F) changing hands at $108 and $105 per barrel, respectively. Prices have remained elevated since Saudi Arabia shuttered its East-West pipeline and the Iranian-backed Houthis launched fresh attacks in the Middle East.
Bond yields have also shot up as investors await the next Fed policy decision. The yield on the 10-year note (^TNX) hovered around 5%. The move follows the key interest rate briefly rising overnight to its highest intraday level since 2007, underscoring concerns about rising borrowing costs, global deficits, and inflation.
The Federal Open Market Committee began its September meeting on Tuesday, with traders overwhelmingly expecting a rate hike. The release of the so-called dot plot, along with Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh's press conference, could offer investors clues about the prevailing winds in the Fed's monetary policy.

Jim Cramer sees Seneca Foods Corporation (NASDAQ:SENEA) as an attractive food stock after its sharp rally, but he wants investors to leave room for a further pullback. During the September 10 episode of Mad Money, he noted that the shares had recently fallen about 11% from their high the previous week. He added:
Looking at the chart, you'd think this was an AI data center company. The stock's up 256% over the past three years, nearly 70% year to date.
Cramer said its appeal starts with its exposure to both branded and private-label products:
They don't care whether you're buying the premium nationally branded stuff or the cheap private-label knockoffs because they package everything.
Seneca reported fiscal first-quarter 2027 revenue of $405.2 million, up 36.2% year over year, while diluted EPS increased to $2.85 from $2.14. Management attributed the revenue growth to the Green Giant U.S. frozen acquisition, private-label growth and the timing of contract-packaging sales. Cramer credited the Green Giant transaction with helping drive the improvement after Seneca acquired B&G Foods' U.S. frozen business in March.

Fed Chair Kevin Warsh used his Aug. 28 keynote speech at Jackson Hole to drive home the point that inflation is broader than the headline rate suggests, speaking directly to the everyday experiences of a rising price level that most people have been having for a while now. Specifically, Warsh said 54% of the 199 items in the personal consumption expenditures (PCE) price index, which is the Fed's preferred inflation gauge, had risen by more than 3% in the 12 months through summer 2026, versus 32% of those items in the two decades before the pandemic.
That's a bit of an awkward situation for the companies that make up the S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC), whose stellar growth in 2026 has been built on profits that are much higher than average. In short, the next thing the market will need to deal with is, in all probability, a Federal Reserve that's keen on making businesses pay more for each dollar of borrowing, which could in turn end up leading to investors paying less for each dollar of profit ***** ociated with the ***** ets they buy.

Here's how that could unfold, and soon.
After the Sept. 11 inflation report showed that consumer prices are still rising at a faster-than-desired pace, the odds of a rate hike by the Fed at its meeting on Sept. 16 were 90%, per the CME FedWatch. Warsh also said in his speech that he'd struggle to call the current set of financial conditions restrictive. That obviously means that investors need to brace for higher rates.

The dollar index (DXY00) rose by +0.14% on Tuesday, just below Monday's 1.5-week high. Tuesday's +4% surge in WTI crude oil prices raised inflation expectations and could persuade the Fed to tighten monetary policy, supporting the dollar. Also, Tuesday's increase in the 10-year T-note yield to a 19-year high of 5.04% strengthens the dollar's interest rate differentials. In addition, expectations that the Fed will raise interest rates by 25 bp at the Tue/Wed FOMC meeting support the dollar. The dollar fell from its best level on Tuesday after the Sep Empire manufacturing survey came in weaker than expected.
The US Sep Empire manufacturing survey of general business conditions fell -13.0 points to 7.6, weaker than expectations of 15.0.

Swarmer, Inc.'s (Nasdaq: SWMR) pending acquisition ofUkrainian unmanned-ground-vehicle maker Ratel Robotics could lead to $200 million in 2027 revenue and $20 million in adjusted EBITDA, according to a research note by Lucid Capital Markets.
Swarmer, which boasts Blackwater founder and industry veteran Erik Prince as its non-executive chairman, is in a definitive agreement to buy Ratel for up to $224 million and it has $86 million in secured contracts and about 37% share of Ukrainian government UGV procurement spending, the note said.
The deal comes as Ukraine's drone industry is beginning a consolidation phase, with more than 500 credible drone companies operating in the country while being home to some of the world's advanced battlefield drone technology, it said.
Swarmer could potentially consolidate Ukraine's fragmented drone industry into a full-stack drones, autonomy software and ground-vehicle platform, the note said.

The 10-year Treasury yield hit 5% in September 2026, its highest since 2007, intensifying pressure on stock valuations.
Buffett's gravity rule reframes a 5% Treasury as a 20x earnings multiple, which is far cheaper than the 45x bonds carried at 2.15% in 2017.
Buffett warned that at 21% short rates in 1982, even stocks at 6x earnings looked unattractive against the risk-free alternative.

An AI approval in minutes means nothing if you retire before closing. Lenders must re-verify employment within 10 business days of the note date.
Retirement income like Social Security can replace a salary for qualifying purposes, and an SSA award letter alone may be enough to close.
A rate lock protects only the interest rate, so disclose your retirement date early and build the loan file around income that survives closing day.

On September 10, Canaccord cut its price target for The Lovesac Company (NASDAQ:LOVE) from $22 to $20 but maintained its Buy rating on the stock. This update came after the company reported its financial results for the second quarter of fiscal 2027, which ended August 2, 2026.
Canaccord noted that the company's fiscal Q2 results were in line with expectations. Revenue and adjusted EBITDA were both within the company's guidance and close to consensus estimates. The company received $21 million in IEEPA tariff refunds, which helped lift gross margins and earnings above consensus.
The Lovesac Company (NASDAQ:LOVE) reported net sales 0.4% higher than the prior-year period. This slight increase was mainly driven by 14 net new showrooms, although this was partly offset by a 1.9% decline in omni-channel comparable net sales and the closure of the company's Best Buy shop-in-shop locations. During the quarter, the company opened five additional showrooms and closed two.
The company reported net income of $7.4 million in the second quarter, compared with a net loss of $6.7 million in the same period last year. Operating income also improved to $10.9 million from an operating loss of $8.8 million a year earlier.
Gross profit rose 21.7% year-over-year while gross margin expanded to 68.4% of net sales from 56.4%, an increase of 1,200 basis points. The improvement was largely driven by IEEPA tariff recoveries, which contributed 1,240 basis points to gross margin. Excluding those recoveries, gross margin was 56.0%, down 40 basis points from the prior-year period.

Broyhill **** et Management, a Charlotte-based firm, issued its second-quarter 2026 investor letter, which is available for download here. The Broyhill Equity Composite gained 8.8% in Q2, trailing the MSCI All Country World Index's 15.1% and the MSCI ACWI Value Index's 10.8%. For the first half, the Composite returned 2.3%, versus 11.5% for the Index. The letter highlights that a significant portion of the shortfall occurred in April due to market dynamics and geopolitical events, with tech, particularly semiconductors, driving recent gains. Broyhill notes its lack of direct semiconductor exposure but acknowledges potential interest in the sector if opportunities arise, maintaining its investment philosophy focused on capital protection in fragile market conditions. Also, check the fund's top five holdings to see its best picks in 2026.
In its second-quarter 2026 investor letter, Broyhill **** et Management highlighted First Citizens BancShares, Inc. (NASDAQ:FCNCA). First Citizens BancShares, Inc. (NASDAQ:FCNCA) operates as the holding company for First-Citizens Bank & Trust Company, providing retail and commercial banking services. On September 14, 2026, First Citizens BancShares, Inc. (NASDAQ:FCNCA) closed at $2,173.88 per share. Over the past month, First Citizens BancShares, Inc. (NASDAQ:FCNCA) declined 1.03%, but its shares are up 17.10% over the past year. First Citizens BancShares, Inc. (NASDAQ:FCNCA) has a market capitalization of $24.55 billion, and its stock has traded within a 52-week range of $1,623.76 to $2,296.30.
Broyhill **** et Management stated the following regarding First Citizens BancShares, Inc. (NASDAQ:FCNCA) in its Q2 2026 investor letter:
"First Citizens BancShares, Inc. (NASDAQ:FCNCA), initiated in June, is a well-run company which we believe to be undervalued and with catalysts on the horizon. The company has retired almost 20% of its Class A shares since July 2024, and inside its roughly $25 billion market capitalization sits a rail leasing fleet of approximately 128,000 cars valued by the market at bank multiples. Management has proven themselves highly competent and highly aligned with shareholders, with the Holding family in key executive positions, owning over 20% of the economics and controlling roughly half the vote through their Class B shares. Much of what we are waiting on has a date attached to it: two separations have completed, and Masco and First Citizens are retiring shares at a pace that improves per-share value whether or not the multiples change."

A company that specializes in autonomous power deployment said it has raised $31.8 million to scale its operations, with investments from major groups including Google and Bill Gates-founded Breakthrough Energy Ventures (BEV). California-based Planted said the new capital expands its robotic fleet. The company said the funding also supports the launch of Sage, its next-generation robot, as demand outpaces the company's current capacity.Planted on September 15 said the funding round was led by Piva Capital and RA Capital Management Planetary Health, with participation from Gigascale Capital and Open AI-backer Khosla Ventures, along with Google and BEV. Gigascale Capital was founded by former Meta executive Mike Schroepfer."Globally, solar needs to be deployed about five times faster than it is today to hit the scale experts project we'll need by 2050, and the gap is growing as the industry confronts constraints involving supply chains, land, interconnection, and skilled labor," said Eric Brown, CEO of Planted. "The way to close that gap is to turn the construction of a power plant into a manufacturing problem: building robots and deployment systems, not just projects. We have robots in the field proving the model works today. This round is how we scale it."
Brown's group on Tuesday said a record 664 GW of solar photovoltaic power was installed worldwide last year, but noted terawatts of new generation capacity are needed to meet projected demand. The company said it combines planning software, high-density terrain-following solar arrays, storage, and field robotics into one system, which enables Planted to build on parcels of land that legacy trackers cannot use. The company said its system also delivers twice the energy per acre, resulting in smaller project footprints and a lower profile on the landscape.Planted said its array "is simplified, designed for automation, and defined in software," and thus can deliver new power generation capacity in months rather than years. Planted's most recent build, a 28-MW behind-the-meter project serving a neocloud data center, went from first call to power in 10 months, with field construction completed in under three months.Planted on Tuesday said the company's development model "is proven and bankable," and noted its projects carry independent engineering validation and project financing. The company completed Bowes Solar, an 11-MW project in Illinois for Cultivate Power, and will next build Aligned Climate Capital's Armoracia project on 16 acres, 10 fewer than the original design required. The denser redesign moved the project through local review after the initial layout was rejected, according to the company. Planted, which deployed more than 10 MW in 2025, is on track for 100 MW in 2026, a 10x jump in a single year, with a project pipeline of more than 20 GW.The company said Sage, the next-generation robot, will be deployed later this year.

The dollar index (DXY00) is up +0.11% today and is just below Monday's 1.5-week high. Today's +1% rise in WTI crude oil prices raises inflation expectations and could persuade the Fed to tighten monetary policy, which supports the dollar. Also, today's increase in the 10-year T-note yield to a 19-year high of 5.04% strengthens the dollar's interest rate differentials. In addition, expectations that the Fed will raise interest rates by 25 bp at the Tue/Wed FOMC meeting support the dollar. The dollar fell from its best level today after the Sep Empire manufacturing survey came in weaker than expected.
The US Sep Empire manufacturing survey of general business conditions fell -13.0 points to 7.6, weaker than expectations of 15.0.

U.S. stocks fell Tuesday as the 10-year Treasury yield climbed above 5% for the first time since 2007, with investors awaiting a Federal Reserve interest-rate decision expected Wednesday.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped roughly 449 points, or 0.86%. The S&P 500 fell about 0.34% and the Nasdaq Composite declined 0.48%. The 10-year Treasury yield rose as high as 5.041% before pulling back to trade around 5.011%.
Oil prices extended gains after Saudi Arabia shut a key pipeline that bypasses the Strait of Hormuz. Brent crude futures for November delivery rose about 1.6% to trade above $107 a barrel, while West Texas Intermediate futures climbed to above $103.
Fed funds futures point to roughly a 90% to 93% probability that the Fed raises its benchmark rate by a quarter percentage point on Wednesday, which would lift the upper bound of the target range to 4%, according to The Wall Street Journal. That probability was roughly 59% a week ago.
Christopher Hodge, chief economist for the U.S. at Natixis CIB Americas, said in a note that he expects Fed Chair Kevin Warsh to signal the rate move is not a commitment to further hikes. "We also think that he will emphasize that this decision was discrete and does not pre-commit the Fed to any actions in subsequent meetings, giving him and the Committee maximum flexibility to respond to shocks," Hodge said, according to CNBC.
