Today in Boston Celtics history, Kenneth Herman Rollins joined the team as a free agent in 1952. An alum of the University of Kentucky, Rollins represented the United States at the 1948 London Olympics, where he won a gold medal. Prior to his tenure with the Celtics, the native of Charleston, Missouri, played for two pro clubs. Rollins played with the Chicago Stags in the Basketball **** ociation of America (BAA), a predecessor to the NBA, until the team dissolved at the conclusion of the 1949-50 season.
After that, he played for the Louisville Alumnites in the National Professional Basketball League during their sole season in 1950-51. Rollins, the older brother of (then) Philadelphia (now, Golden State) Warriors 1956 NBA draft selection Phil, would take the 1951-52 season off from basketball altogether. Rollins returned to the sport with Boston on this date in 1952, playing a total of 43 games with the Celtics before retiring from the sport for good in 1953.
He averaged 2.3 points, 1 rebound, and 1.1 **** ists per game over that stretch.
It is also the date the Celtics waived former Boston big man Todd Mundt.
The Memphis product joined the team as a late-season add in April of 1996 and played just nine games with the franchise, over which he logged 0.7 points and 0.3 rebounds per game.

Everything in the world of Gonzaga basketball hinges on the courtroom right now. Mario Saint-Supery was lured away from his upcoming sophomore season by a four-year contract to play professionally in Valencia, and Mark Few was left without a point guard. That vacated roster spot, as well as the one left open by one-time commit Jack Kayil, however, may have come at exactly the right time. UCLA's Donovan Dent and Skyy Clark are among the group of fifth-year seniors suing the NCAA for one more season of eligibility, and Gonzaga is reportedly in the mix for both. If the Zags are able to land both, this roster stops looking like an eleventh-hour rebuild and starts looking like the key ingredients for a top-five squad.
This is particularly vital because Gonzaga's non-conference slate for the 2026-27 season is arguably the toughest Mark Few has ever scheduled. The Bulldogs are already projected in the AP preseason top 20-to-25 range even before the eligibility rulings (hopefully) break their way, and the schedule does not let up from November through February.
Gonzaga has never been the type of team to schedule a patty-cake non-conference schedule and hopefully start firing on all cylinders by the time conference play rolls around. Rather, the Zags have spent the last decade scheduling a grueling non-conference slate to serve as a preview of the kind of competition they expect to see again in late March. Here are the games Zag fans should circle on their calendars now, regardless of who will or won't actually be suiting up for the Bulldogs.
Gonzaga has unfinished business with Purdue, which ended the Zags' 2024 season in the Sweet 16 behind Zach Edey's 27 points and 14 rebounds. This one opens the season on a neutral floor.
The roster picture has flipped since then. Purdue finished 30-9 and ranked No. 2 on KenPom last year, but its entire veteran core is now gone. Braden Smith, the NCAA's all-time ******* ists leader, and Trey Kaufman-Renn were both drafted in June, while Fletcher Loyer exhausted his eligibility and signed an Exhibit 10 deal with the Clippers. Matt Painter didn't chase a portal fix. Instead, Purdue is leaning on sophomore Omer Mayer out of Tel Aviv, Israel, who played alongside Smith last season and is the presumptive starter, with five-star freshman Luke Ertel, Indiana's reigning Mr. Basketball, waiting behind him.

In Tuesday night's Indiana Fever win over the Seattle Storm, Caitlin Clark was on one. Clark tallied 32 points on 9-14 shooting to go along with 7 ****** ists and 4 rebounds, and the Fever improved to 18-10 on the season.
Amid the usual litany of off-court storylines, it's been a superb on-court season for the Fever star.
Clark is averaging 21.5 points per game, the third-most in the league, and 7.9 ****** ists per game, the second-most in the league. (In other words, no single player creates more on offense than she does).
She's also quietly upped her efficiency — in her rookie season (in which she was named to the All-WNBA First Team), she shot 41.7% from the field and 34.4% from three. In her sophomore season (in which she appeared in just 13 games due to a myriad of injuries), she shot worse, hitting 36.7% of her shot attempts and 27.9% of her threes.
And, this year, she's shooting 44.3% from the field and 35.4% from three, both career-highs. While turnovers continue to be an Achilles heel, she's averaging fewer per game this year (4.7) than in her rookie campaign (5.6).

The Los Angeles Lakers have done lots of work this summer to remodel their roster around Luka Doncic after LeBron James and several other rotation players left. But that doesn't necessarily mean their current roster is the one they will take with them into training camp when the summer ends.
They still don't have a legitimate starting two-way wing or forward, and they reportedly are looking for another serviceable center to back up Walker Kessler. Of course, by this point in the offseason, the pickings are slim, either via free agency or trade.
Dan Woike of The Athletic outlined the Lakers' options as far as picking up another big man, and he noted that Jalen Smith of the Chicago Bulls "has some fans" within the Lakers organization, while also adding the concerns that would come with acquiring him.
"Smith has some fans within the organization because he plays with motor and has worked himself into a pretty good outside shooter," Woike wrote. "But Smith is expensive (one-year, $9.5 million remaining on his deal) and undersized at 6 foot 8. The previous Bulls' regime was a fan of his, which puts his actual availability into question."
Smith, 26, was the No. 10 pick in the 2020 NBA Draft and can play both the 4 and 5 positions. This past season, he averaged 10.2 points, 6.7 rebounds and 0.8 blocks in 20.7 minutes a game while making 37.3% of his 3-point attempts. He has a wingspan of at least 7-foot-1, and while he isn't a freakish athlete, he has solid athleticism and runs the floor well.

Indiana Fever center Aliyah Boston made an early exit from Tuesday's matchup against the Seattle Storm after taking a hard fall.
The incident happened with 4:56 remaining in the second quarter as the Fever led 46-31. Boston was tripped up by Seattle's Flau'jae Johnson as she cut to the basket and subsequently landed on her right knee. Boston immediately grabbed her right knee and writhed in pain on the ground as ESPN cut to commercial break.
Boston was eventually helped to her feet and walked to the locker room under her own power, although she had a visible limp. Boston, who had 11 points and two rebounds in 11 minutes, is questionable to return.

The Philadelphia 76ers have reportedly traded forward Johni Broome and a second-round pick to the Los Angeles Clippers for cash, per ESPN's Shams Charania.
The move helps Philadelphia get its financials under both the first and second aprons after signing both LeBron James and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope.
Broome is coming off his rookie season. The 24-year-old played in only 11 games and had 10 points, 16 rebounds and 4 ******* ists in 55 total minutes.
Philadelphia drafted Broome with the 35th overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft. The Clippers get young depth that can be developed. After dazzling in the NBA Summer League earlier this month, Chicago Bulls rookie Caleb Wilson earned high praise from Hall of Famer Charles Barkley on Tuesday.
Wilson was a consensus second-team All-American selection at North Carolina, averaging 19.8 points, 9.4 rebounds, 2.7 ******* ists, 1.5 steals and 1.4 blocks while shooting 57.8% from the field. He set the freshman program records for scoring average and 20-point games (17).

A former three-year Duke Blue Devil recently signed a professional contract overseas after a four-year NBA career. According to BasketNews, Wendell Moore Jr. will be joining Italian basketball club Virtus Bologna. Virtus Bologna competes in the EuroLeague and topped the Italian basketball league (LBA) standings last season with a 23-5 record.
After earning North Carolina Mr. Basketball honors during his senior season at ******* Mill High School, Moore Jr. went on to average 10.7 points, 4.9 rebounds, 3.2 ******* ists and 1.2 steals in three seasons at Duke. Moore Jr. was then selected No. 26 overall by the Dallas Mavericks in the 2022 NBA Draft.
In four NBA seasons, Moore Jr. played a total of 96 games for three different franchises: the Minnesota Timberwolves, Detroit Pistons and Charlotte Hornets. In those games, he averaged 2.3 points, 1.4 rebounds, 0.7 ******* ists, 0.3 steals and 0.3 blocks in 8.2 minutes per game.

Peyton Watson is nearing a big payday after his breakout season. The Denver Nuggets are offering the UCLA product a five-year, $70 million deal, according to The Athletic's Tony Jones.
It's a tricky financial situation for Denver, which recently matched the Oklahoma City Thunder's two-year, $12 million offer sheet for sharpshooter Spencer Jones. The Jones move brought the Nuggets into the second apron, so they'll reportedly have to do some roster shuffling to be able to extend Watson.
If Watson and the Nuggets can't make it work, he'll have plenty of suitors. The only holdup is apparently the Nuggets' asking price. Denver is reportedly requesting two first-round picks in exchange for Watson, who took a massive leap in Year 4 but is still relatively unproven.
Watson averaged 14.6 points and 4.9 rebounds while shooting 41.1% from 3 last season. The 23-year-old has steadily improved each year, becoming a trusted NBA role player after hardly playing as a freshman at UCLA in 2021-22.
The Milwaukee Bucks, Atlanta Hawks and Los Angeles Clippers have reportedly expressed interest in a sign-and-trade for Watson. Los Angeles has long been a rumored destination for the 6-foot-8 guard, as the Clippers are undergoing somewhat of a youth movement following Kawhi Leonard's (likely) departure.

Matisse Thybulle is officially headed to the Los Angeles Lakers, the team announced on Monday, giving the team a proven perimeter defender to its reshaped roster.
Thybulle, 29, is a two-time NBA All-Defensive Second Team selection, adding one of the league's most disruptive defensive players to piece alongside Luka Dončić, Austin Reaves and new starting center Walker Kessler.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Thybulle spent last season with the Portland Trail Blazers, playing in 30 games off the bench while averaging 5.8 points, 2.0 rebounds and 2.0 steals in 16.0 minutes per game.
He also shot 39.8% from 3-point range last season, developing into a consistent 3-and-D piece as he shot 41.8% comibied in the last two seasons. The only knock is he only played just 45 games the last two seasons.

Hoping to add some excitement to their offseason, the Oklahoma City Thunder had their attempts at stealing away talent from a divisional rival fall short. The Denver Nuggets matched their two-year, $12 million offer sheet for Spencer Jones.
In a rare attempt at adding a restricted free agent, the Thunder hoped to add Jones to their vacant roster spot. An opening happened on their standard 15-player roster following their trade to send Lu Dort to the Atlanta Hawks in a three-team deal. With $6.9 million to spend below the second apron, they tried to acquire the 25-year-old.
Jones has spent two seasons with the Nuggets. He went undrafted in the 2024 NBA draft. He went from a two-way player to getting converted to a standard deal in Feb. 2026. He's one of Denver's best finds in recent memory. He averaged 5.5 points and 3.3 rebounds this past season. He shot 39.6% from 3 on 2.3 attempts.
Starting the weekend on the Thunder, Jones ended it back on the Nuggets. They matched his offer sheet with an hour to spare. Denver had 48 hours to make a decision. Afterward, he took to LinkedIn to express his thoughts on a wild two days.
"It's official. I'm staying a Denver Nugget," Jones wrote. "Plot twist. Yes, I signed an offer sheet with Oklahoma City and yes, Denver matched it. I know some people are confused, and some fans are even upset. How could I sign with a rival? I get it. But I also need people to understand something. This is a business. In case one lives under a rock, the Philadelphia 76ers landed LeBron James in free agency. The future Hall of Famer, 41, is set to enter his 24th season in the league, but he is still one of the game's best after averaging 20.9 points, 7.2 ****** ists, and 6.1 rebounds in the 2025-26 season. His presence immediately transforms the Sixers in so many ways.
Let's just start with his versatility. James can play all five positions on the floor and can still stuff a box score no matter where he's placed in terms of his position and whoever is on the floor with him. The way James can just grab a rebound and immediately take it the other way and start a transition opportunity is going to be important for this group to take advantage of Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe for easy buckets.
Another thing that stands out is when Joel Embiid inevitably has to miss games. The presence of James makes it easy at the center spot now. James can now slide to the 5 in some lineups to replace Embiid as he can help Adem Bona and Ariel Hukporti fill the void. James will be able to play that spot and continue to play at a high level as there will be plenty of nights when he will have the mismatch, even at this stage of his career.
Shooting will be somewhat of an issue as it isn't like James lights it up from 3-point range, and Embiid isn't a knockdown shooter, but Maxey, Edgecombe, and, at times, Jaylen Brown can pick up the slack from there. The Sixers should still be able to have enough ****** ing with the lineup thanks to those three and they should be able to find efficiency and a groove with those lineups.
James is the ultimate player to have on the floor as he is the Queen piece on the chessboard. Coach Nick Nurse and his staff will have plenty of ways to use him on the floor and in different lineup combinations. There will be times he's bringing the ball up, or playing off the ball on the wing, as well as playing up front, and he will be effective in every spot. Truly. There isn't anything James can't do in this game, even when considering where he's at in his career.

For Travis Perry, playing basketball at Kentucky was the dream.
The former Lyon County star grew up watching the Wildcats and eventually received a scholarship offer from former head coach John Calipari, committing to the program and staying with Kentucky even after Calipari departed for Arkansas and Mark Pope took over.
Then after one season in Lexington, Perry made the difficult decision to leave the program he always dreamed of representing.
Perry entered the transfer portal with two hours remaining before the deadline, choosing to find a new opportunity after Kentucky's roster moves created a challenging path toward consistent playing time. Former Ohio State basketball star Jae'Sean Tate is returning to Houston. The Rockets announced the re-signing of the former Buckeye forward to a one-year deal on Thursday. According to Hoops Hype's Michael Scotto, the contract is worth $3.07 million with a partial guarantee of $1.04 million.
Tate is entering his seventh year with the Rockets after banking the odds and finding his way to Houston after first playing in Europe. He was signed to an NBA contract in 2020 and quickly became a starter who could do a little bit of everything for the Rockets, even making the All-NBA Rookie First Team, becoming only the second non-NBA-drafted player to do so.
Tate has averaged 7.5 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 1.8 ***** ists during his six years with Houston, but those numbers are dragged down a bit by last season's 2.8 points per contest in limited action. He may be on the tail end of his career, but he has been a mainstay in Houston longer than any other player on the team. Hopefully, this coming season will see a bit of a renaissance, being paired with former Ohio State all-time leading scorer and star guard Bruce Thornton.
Tate becomes only the 15th player in Rockets' history to play at least seven seasons with the club. We wish Tate success and the chance to get a contract beyond this next season.

According to a report from The Spokesman Review's Greg Woods, the Washington Huskies and Washington State Cougars will not play their annual Apple Cup rivalry on the hardwood.
It's the first time since 1917 that the two teams won't meet in the regular season after the Huskies moved from the Pac-12 to the Big Ten following the end of the 2023-24 season; instead, the in-state rivals will play an exhibition game in Seattle at some point this fall.
The Huskies currently lead the series 189-111, and have won the last three matchups against the Cougars, most recently an 81-69 victory in Pullman.
In that contest, the Huskies were led by freshman forward Hannes Steinbach, who posted 14 points and 13 rebounds as part of a stellar season that saw him selected by the Charlotte Hornets with the No. 14 overall pick in June's NBA draft, while sophomore guard Wesley Yates added 26 points and 7 rebounds in the win.
Coach Danny Sprinkle, who grew up a Husky after being born in Pullman because his late father, Bill, played defensive back for Washington in the 1960s, is undefeated in his two games against the Cougars and will have to wait at least another year for an opportunity to earn another win over WSU.

As their latest free agency addition, the Houston Rockets announced the signing of 22-year-old forward Julian Phillips. At 6-foot-8 and 201 pounds, Phillips is well regarded for his elite athleticism and 7-foot-1 wing span.
Following one collegiate season at Tennessee, Phillips was the No. 35 overall pick by Boston in the 2023 NBA draft. From there, he spent his first two-and-a-half seasons with Chicago before being acquired by Minnesota via a February trade.
In 167 career games with seven starts, Phillips has averaged 11.4 points (43.5% FG, 32.0% on 3-pointers), 4.9 rebounds, 1.2 ****** ists, 1.3 steals, and 1.6 made 3-pointers per 36 minutes. He has also appeared in 12 G League games, averaging 19.0 points and 7.4 rebounds while shooting 41.4% from 3-point range.
At the 2023 NBA draft combine, Phillips recorded the highest standing vertical leap (36.0 inches) and the best max vertical leap (43.0 inches) of any participant. He was a McDonald's All-American in 2022.
Between Tuesday and Friday, the Rockets officially added Isaiah Crawford, Jae'Sean Tate, Oscar Tshiebwe, and now Phillips to their 2026-27 offseason roster. All will be evaluated during the team's upcoming training camp, which begins in late September.

The LeBron James free agency frenzy finally concluded on Friday.
The 41-year-old future Hall-of-Famer announced on social media that he is signing with the Philadelphia 76ers, where he'll join former MVP Joel Embiid and perennial All-Stars Tyrese Maxey and Jaylen Brown, who the team acquired from the Celtics earlier this month.
That forms a pretty strong core in the City of Brotherly Love, and former NBA star Vince Carter — a Hall of Famer in his own right — doesn't think the league is ready for it.
"That's cheating," Carter said of Philadelphia adding James on "Cousins with Vince Carter & Tracy McGrady. "That's cheating if he goes there, because he doesn't have to do much to still be him. Now, your fifth starter has to guard (one of the 76ers' other stars)."
Despite his age, James remains a productive player. In 60 regular-season appearances last season, he averaged 33.2 minutes along with 20.9 points, 7.2 ******* ists and 6.1 rebounds. Now, with a strong supporting cast around him, Carter is putting the league on notice.

On Friday, the Houston Rockets announced the signing of free agent center Oscar Tshiebwe. Terms of the contract, including the deal's length and whether there is any guaranteed money, were not disclosed.
The 26-year-old is listed at 6-foot-9 and 265 pounds, according to the team's announcement.
Tshiebwe was eligible for the 2023 NBA draft following his senior season at Kentucky. From there, Tshiebwe spent his 2023-24 rookie season as a two-way player with Indiana before playing the past two seasons on a two-way contract with Utah.
In 49 career NBA games with seven starts, Tshiebwe has averaged 7.0 points (61.3% FG) and 6.5 rebounds in 15.2 minutes.
In NBA history, Tshiebwe is the only player with 15-plus games played to have averaged at least 15.0 rebounds and 6.0 offensive boards per 36 minutes. For his G League career, he has averaged 16.9 rebounds and 6.8 offensive boards in 97 tip-off tournament and regular-season games.

Maryland women’s basketball great Alyssa Thomas continues to forge her stellar legacy for the Phoenix Mercury. The former Terp forward notched her 20th regular-season triple-double Wednesday, extending her all-time WNBA record.
