The San Diego Padres continued their freefall toward mediocrity with their fifth straight loss to the Philadelphia Phillies this time by the score of 3-2 at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia on Wednesday night. The Padres were finding ways to win despite their inconsistent offense through the first 50 games of the season but have not had that same luck over their last 10 games. San Diego is 2-8 over that span and is in danger of being swept by Philadelphia for the second time as they enter the final game of the series today at 10:05 a.m.
The Padres had their chances, yet again, to win a game against the Phillies, who had Christopher Sanchez on the mound, but like the day before, they failed to come up with a clutch hit with one out and runners on the corners in the top of the eighth inning. Fernando Tatis Jr. reached on a one-out single and was followed by Miguel Anduja, who singled to put runners on the corners. Manny Machado struck out for the second out of the inning, but then Gavin Sheets walked to load the bases and Xander Bogaerts was hit by a pitch to force in a run to make the score 3-2. With the bases loaded Ty France hit a ground ball to Philadelphia second baseman Bryson Stott who forced out Bogaerts at second base to end the threat and the inning.
Phillies closer Jhoan Duran got his second save of the series facing just three Padres in the ninth inning. He got Jackson Merrill to lineout and then struck out Bryce Johnson and Samad Taylor to close out the contest. Merrill provided the lone highlight for San Diego with an RBI-single off Sanchez in the top of the seventh inning. He followed France who hit a two-out double and came into score with Merrill’s hit. It was the first run allowed by Sanchez in 50.2 innings.
Walker Buehler started for the Padres and pitched six innings, allowing one run on four hits with two walks and six strikeouts. Jason Adam, who has not been the same dominant reliever since returning from his ruptured quadriceps tendon, allowed home runs to J.T. Realmuto and Kyle Schwarber in the bottom of the seventh inning, which proved to be the difference in the game. San Diego will try to salvage the series with a win today.

Why Erling Haaland transfer claim has Man City considering legal action vs. Real Madrid presidential candidate originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The club season may be over, but Real Madrid are gearing up for one of their most important moments in recent history.
For the first time in two decades, the incumbent club president, Florentino Perez, is facing competition in the elections. Enrique Riquelme, a renewable energy tycoon, is offering fans an alternative means to restore Madrid to the top of Spanish football after two seasons without one of the major trophies.
As part of his campaigning, Riquelme has promised to land some marquee signings in the transfer window: Erling Haaland and Rodri, two of Manchester City's undisputed stars.
It's not uncommon for candidates to curry favour with voters by making ****** urances over new players — Perez himself has done so numerous times, most infamously in 2000 when he guaranteed and then brokered the deal to sign Luis Figo from Barcelona — but on this occasion, it's caused more than mere eye-rolling among Madrid's rivals.

Red Sox should trade Aroldis Chapman to this one team, even if it doesn’t make sense originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Boston Red Sox season continues to just go off the rails, and as of right now, it doesn't seem like anything is going to change. Even if the Red Sox start to play a bit better, they're already 11.5 games out in the American League East and would probably be better off just moving on from some guys over the next few months.
It remains uncertain if that's the direction the Red Sox want to go in, though there seems to be a real feeling around Major League Baseball that at least a few players will be available.
One of them should be veteran Aroldis Chapman, as the future Hall of Famer has thrown the baseball at a ridiculously high level this year, but, because of how old he is, he just doesn't make sense on this Red Sox roster any longer.
While I think a trade is going to come sometime in the near future, I'm a bit uncertain about where he'll end up.

A lightweight **** le unification bout headlines the UFC Freedom 250 fight card at the White House on June 14. Champion Ilia Topuria faces interim **** leholder Justin Gaethje in the historic event's featured fight.
Topuria will make the walk to the octagon on the South Lawn undefeated and expects to remain that way. After watching Gaethje's last fight against Paddy Pimblett, he's certain that he'll be successful in his first **** le defense.
"Listen, if you compare my skills to his skills, I just feel that I'm way better than him," Topuria told UFC on Paramount+. "I knew that at some time I would have to defend my belt against him since he became the interim world champion, but I don't know. I see almost zero possibilities for him, but that's my perception."
"Every fighter is different. They bring different styles inside the octagon. I've never faced anyone like Justin. He's a legendary fighter. I like him as a fan and I always love to watch all of his fights because they're all very entertaining," Topuria said. "Yeah. But when you talk about like me fighting him, yeah. As I told you before, I don't see any possibility for him."
Topuria is prepared to go five rounds with Gaethje but doesn't think the fight will get out of the first frame. "I don't think so," Topuria said when asked if he thinks the fight will go into the later rounds.

The NFL landscape was shaken up considerably on June 1, as multiple blockbuster trades reshaped the league's power structure.
It started when the Los Angeles Rams acquired two-time Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett in a trade with the Cleveland Browns.
Garrett – who set an NFL record with 23 sacks in 2025 – will provide the Rams a big-time boost to an already great pass rush that ranked fifth in pressure rate last season, per the NFL's Next Gen Stats.
Before the Garrett trade, most sportsbooks viewed the Rams and the reigning Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks as the co-favorites to hoist the Lombardi Trophy following the 2026 NFL season. After it, the Rams are in the pole position as clear-cut favorites to win Super Bowl 61.
That said, the Rams weren't the only Super Bowl contender to bolster their roster. The reigning AFC champion New England Patriots also added a top-tier talent to their roster, acquiring three-time Pro Bowler A.J. Brown in a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles.
