At the 2025 NFL Scouting Combine, defensive tackle Tyleik Williams weighed 334 pounds. The Lions liked him enough to draft him in the first round, but they told him they didn't want him getting heavier. Early this offseason, he did. Now, he's lighter.
Lions coach Dan Campbell said today that he's pumped about what good of shape Williams got into by putting in additional workouts at the team facility this offseason and working with Lions Director of Performance Nutrition Scott Nealon on eating healthy.
"I'm really proud of him, really proud of him," Campbell said of Williams. "He's a man of his word. Before we drafted him, we sat up there, Brad [Holmes] and I did, and said, 'Is there going to be an issue with your weight, ever?' 'No.' He came in, he noticed that he was a little bit heavy in the spring. He came in two weeks before our program even started and was pretty heavy and said, 'I want to get this right.' He put in the work, Scott did a great job with him, got him right."
Campbell said Williams now weighs 325 pounds, which the Lions think is his ideal playing weight.
"He's just put the work in. He's put the work in. And I'll tell you what, he's a man of his word. Came in at 325, made his weight, crushed the conditioning test," Campbell said. "Really fired up. It's a credit to him."

Allen Park — Following their first practice of training camp on Wednesday, the Detroit Lions placed offensive lineman Giovanni Manu on the active/Non-Football Injury (NFI) list, which is meant for players who suffer injuries away from the team.
The timing of Manu's placement on the list, given his participation in Wednesday's practice, was odd. Lions coach Dan Campbell provided some clarity Thursday morning.
"He had an injury, a previous injury over the summer, that was not disclosed," Campbell said. "He came off the practice field (on Wednesday), didn't feel good, got it checked. Sure enough, that's what it was. So, he will be out for a period of time. I don't know how long that's going to be. Call it 12 weeks. Fourteen weeks. I don't know. We'll figure it out down the road, but he is NFI."
Manu, entering his fourth season, was expected to compete for a depth role during this year's training camp. The Lions are likely to start Penei Sewell and rookie Blake Miller at their tackle spots, with veteran Larry Borom serving as the top backup.
▶ DE Payton Turner (back): Campbell opened his news conference by saying Turner, signed by the Lions this offseason, was "probably going to sit out" of Thursday's practice in Allen Park with a stiff back, "but we don't think that'll be anything serious."

The Washington Commanders are underway at training camp! That, of course, means the season is right around the corner, and we'll soon have answers to our biggest questions.
One of the questions is how the running back rotation will work out. Jacory Croskey-Merritt had a respectable rookie season, but the team added Rachaad White, Kaytron Allen, and Jerome Ford this offseason. Any of that trio could push for a large role, meaning Croskey-Merritt has his work cut out for him.
The second-year running back is coming to camp prepared, though. During the first day of camp on Wednesday, Croskey-Merritt showed up noticeably more built. The running back reportedly put on eight pounds of muscle over the offseason due to wanting to break more tackles.
"I just want to be stronger, be able to break more tackles," Croskey-Merritt said. "I just want to be able to do more stuff, and I think it's going to pay off, man."
The running back played in all 17 games as a rookie and ended with 805 yards and eight touchdowns. Croskey-Merritt had a mediocre stretch over the middle of the season, though, and he struggled to break through contact. The hope is that the experience and added weight will help in that area in 2026.

Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Nick Bolton spoke with reporters after practice on Wednesday at Missouri Western State University. He expressed his appreciation for being named a new inductee into the Missouri Athletic Hall of Fame.
"Coming from Texas, Coach (Barry) Odom took a chance on me. I was offered about two weeks before signing day, so I told him, man-to-man, I'm going to give this program everything I've got for giving me a chance. Looking back on it - what is it? from nine years ago on the first day in the building," said Bolton, "So yeah, super proud. Super proud to be a the true son in the University of Missouri. This place has been my home, let me be myself, allowed me to grow into my own and grow into a man. So yeah, man, I was super excited."
Bolton had another impressive season in 2025, leading the Chiefs with 154 total tackles, along with a sack and an interception. He was selected as an alternate for the 2026 Pro Bowl Games. During his college football career at Missouri, Bolton was named First-Team All-SEC in 2019 and 2020 and Second-Team All-American in 2020.

The Chicago Bears officially kicked off training camp with their first practice on Wednesday morning. While it was a shorter, lighter workout to open the summer, there were still plenty of notable headlines and standouts.
It wasn't an eventful first day of practice as the Bears conducted a light workout that didn't even last 90 minutes, but it's key to ramping up before pads come on next week. There wasn't a lot of notable takeaways, but there were updates amid position battles at nickel cornerback, left tackle, center and punt returner, as well as some early standouts on offense.
Let's recap Day 1 of Bears training camp:
Battle at nickel cornerback: With Kyler Gordon sidelined, Chicago rotated several players at nickel during Wednesday's practice, where it was Jaylon Jones working with the starters for most of the workout. Josh Blackwell, rookie Malik Muhammad and veteran newcomer Cam Lewis also mixed in at nickel throughout the morning.
Braxton Jones gets starting nod at left tackle: Jones will have to hold off Theo Benedet, former first-round pick Jedrick Wills Jr. and Kiran Amegadjie for the starting left tackle job, but the expectation is that the job is Jones' to lose. That certainly appeared to be the case after Jones was working with the first-team offense to kick off training camp on Wednesday, according to Michal Dwojak. Meanwhile, it was Amegadjie working with the second team and Wills following. Benedet worked at right tackle with the second team.

Hunt also had a tackle for loss on Tank Bigsby, and he just generally he set the edge well against the run.

Hunting season. Greenard's absence pushed Jalyx Hunt into the starting spot at right outside linebacker opposite Nolan Smith Jr. Hunt will likely play as many snaps as the other two this season. There's an argument to be made that he should get more playing time than Smith. Nevertheless, he took advantage of his opportunities with Greenard out. Hunt shot into the backfield unblocked and forced Hurts to check down to Cooper on one play-action pass that came from under center. He blew up tight end Dallas Goedert with an edge rush and Hurts had to hurry a dump to Bigsby that wasn't caught. And he beat Mailata on back-to-back rushes — one with an inside move and the other from the outside — that blew up pass plays.

Auburn defensive lineman Saint Farrior shares a similar story to fellow lineman Cody Sigler. Like Sigler, Farrior received little attention during the high school recruiting process, transferred to a Sun Belt program after originally signing with a lower-level program, and made his way to Auburn as an upperclassman.

We knew Taysom Hill could run and pass, but he proved he could catch on this 45-yard touchdown reception against the Carolina Panthers. That's an easy choice for our New Orleans Saints Play of the Day.
Hill may have scored on this play, but it was Drew Brees' day to remind everyone just how lethal he could be so late in his career. The future Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback cruised to 253 yards and three touchdowns on the afternoon, going 19-of-30 and completing passes to eight different players.
With that said, this play was all Hill's doing. The versatile playmaker ran a crossing route and lost the defender trailing him to get wide open short of the first down marker -- then he cut upfield to pick up 20 yards. A timely block by his teammate Tre'Quan Smith cleared a lane to get Hill to the 5-yard line before the Panthers defense closed in, but he fought through tackles by Tre Boston and Jermaine Carter Jr. for the score. ESPN's Bill Barnwell made an All-Backup Team, and two New England Patriots players made the cut.
Barnwell used all backup players and rotation guys to make a 53-man roster. He forced himself to take at least one backup from each team, but he did not take more than two players. His main goal was to go after players who participate regularly on special teams that help fill out the backend of the lineup.
It's also worth noting that he wanted to incorporate rookies on his team. However, the Patriots did not have a rookie representative in this situation. The players Barnwell chose for the Patriots were wide receiver DeMario Douglas and defensive tackle Cory Durden.
Douglas would fall under the category of a rotation guy, although that might change this season, considering he's been working with the starters at training camp. The wide receiver was a productive playmaker last season, recording 31 catches for 447 yards and three touchdowns.
Meanwhile, Durden was initially signed by the Patriots as a member of the practice squad. However, he worked his way up the depth chart and became a regular contributor later in the season.

The Tennessee ******* ans finished their first day of training camp practice, and after a solid day of work, Jeffery Simmons, Cam Ward, Wan'Dale Robinson, and John Franklin-Myers met with the media to discuss the opening day.
During those availabilities, Franklin-Myers talked about the many different aspects that brought him to Nashville, and specifically his comfort playing anywhere along the defensive line in Robert Saleh's defense.

"Shanahan occasionally closed his eyes when he spoke because doing so, he said, felt better when there was too much stimulus. He's dealing with regular headaches and fatigue and, of course, there's his indecisiveness: His lunch decisions can require as much thought as how to plan the 49ers' schedule in the week before their regular-season opener in Melbourne, Australia.
The team's doctors have told Shanahan his injured brain needs to push through pain — to a point. He has a numerical scale to judge the intensity of his headaches — from 1 to 6 — and that's served as a guide as he's watched practice film and tackled other duties before leaving the facility far earlier than he's accustomed.
"The whole thing that I used to think was you lay in a dark room and rest — and that's not it," Shanahan said. "When your pain's a 2, they want you to do something to bring it up to a 4. But as soon as it gets there, you're supposed to stop and let it come down. And then just keep building that muscle.

CHICAGO − Ohio State football coach Ryan Day said the handful of players who were held out at the end of spring practice in April have been participants in summer workouts and are due to return for the start of training camp in August.
Austin Siereveld and Phillip Daniels, the Buckeyes' returning starting left and right tackles, and Earl Little Jr., a transfer safety from Florida State, were among those who underwent procedures late in spring practice.
Day did not divulge the details of the injuries to Siereveld and Daniels during the spring, but then described their procedures as small ones. He said Little had a cleanup procedure on a knee that led him to miss the spring game.
"It's good to get all those guys back and have a full summer with them, which has been great," Day said during Big Ten media days on July 29. "Now we're ready for the preseason and everything looks good. I think it was the right thing to do. At the end of the year, you've got to clean up your shoulders, you've got to clean up your knees. All that went well."
While Siereveld started at left tackle last season, he also made six starts at left guard in 2024 and could slide inside if the Buckeyes reconfigure their offensive line to include Ian Moore, a promising redshirt sophomore.

Matt LaFleur didn't hide his optimism for the 2026 Green Bay Packers at the start of training camp as he enters his eighth season as head coach.

Tampa Bay has agreed to a one-year deal with safety Ifeatu Melifonwu, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Melifonwu, 27, spent last season with the Dolphins. He appeared in 16 games with eight starts, recording 53 total tackles with an interception and a sack.
A third-round pick in 2021, Melifonwu spent his first four seasons with the Lions.

The Saints may have suffered a major blow to their defense.
Defensive lineman Bryan Bresee left Wednesday's opening practice of training camp with a knee injury and NFL Media reports that the fear is that he tore his ACL. If that is confirmed, Bresee will miss the entire 2026 season and the Saints could be on the hunt for more help on their defensive front.
Bresee was a 2023 first-round pick in New Orleans and he started all 15 games he played during the 2025 season. He has 86 tackles, 19 tackles for loss, 14.5 sacks, and two forced fumbles in 49 career games for the team.
The Saints exercised Bresee's fifth-year option this offseason, so he is under contract for next season.

The Seattle Seahawks may have Wednesday off from training camp practice, but they're busy looking at possible roster additions.
Former Dallas Cowboys safety Donovan Wilson is slated for a workout with Seattle, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. It could be yet another former Cowboys defensive player reuniting with current Seahawks defensive coordinator Aden Durde.
Wilson was drafted by the Cowboys in 2019 and started in five of his seven seasons with the team. He recorded 13 sacks, nine forced fumbles, and eight interceptions in his career, including (barring an un-retirement) the final interception of Russell Wilson's career.
When Dan Quinn was the defensive coordinator, Wilson as among the three safeties in Quinn's "big nickel" package, and his best season came in 2022 when he had a career-high five sacks and seven tackles for loss, earning him a three-year contract extension.
The Seahawks are currently without Nick Emmanwori, whose recent ankle surgery landed him on the PUP list. His status for Week 1 is unclear but it's not expected to be a long-term absence. In the meantime, the 30-year-old Wilson would be a possible veteran presence with a legitimate shot to make the roster. We'll see if the workout turns into an eventual signing.

The San Francisco 49ers had a few players go down with injuries early on in training camp, and now they've decided to move on from Andrew Farmer II and William Bradley-King to make room for linebacker Quinton Bell and defensive end K.J. Henry.
Farmer played at Lane from 2018-22. After going undrafted in 2023, he's spent one season with the Los Angeles Chargers, one with the Denver Broncos and one with the 49ers. Over his three years in the league, he's appeared in eight games and recorded three tackles. The 26-year-old suffered a back injury on Sunday.
Bradley-King played at Arkansas State from 2016-19, earning All-Sun Belt honors twice, before transferring to Baylor for one final season. He went in the seventh round (No. 240 overall) of the 2021 NFL draft, and spent time with the Washington Commanders, New England Patriots and Miami Dolphins before joining the 49ers last year. He's appeared in four games and recorded seven tackles and a half-sack over the last five years in the league. The 28-year-old was injured Monday.
If both players going unclaimed on waivers, they would revert back to San Francisco's injured reserve, ending their season. They'd only be able to return in 2026 if they come to an injury settlement with the team at some point.

Tennessee said Wednesday that linebacker Arion Carter has been suspended for the first two games of the 2026 season by the NCAA after he repaid an agent for a flight he took during the NFL's pre-draft process.
Carter explored entering the 2026 NFL Draft before deciding to return for his senior season. As he was looking at entering the draft, an agent paid for a $427 plane ticket. After Carter suffered an injury while working out before the draft, he returned to school and paid for the flight.
However, the NCAA deemed the initial payment of that ticket by the agent to be a Level III violation because players and their families are not allowed to take material benefits from agents, including transportation. And a spokesperson for the school told the Knoxville News Sentinel that Carter had actually been suspended for three games before it was reduced down to two.
"We disagree with the NCAA's ruling on punishing Arion with a multi-game suspension this fall," Tennessee coach Josh Heupel said in a statement. Arion made the right decision for his future health and well-being. He will proudly graduate from Tennessee in public health with Dean's List honors in August. Our team stands behind AC and his family, and we can't wait to be on the field with him during training camp this week."
Carter was Tennessee's third-leading tackler in 2025 despite missing three games because of a foot injury that flared up as he was looking to turn pro. He had 76 stops and six tackles for loss across 10 games. He'll miss the team's Week 1 game against Furman and its Week 2 matchup vs. Georgia Tech.

The Kentucky football team is entering a new era in 2026 under coach Will Stein. We're going through the offensive positions, and ranking all 16 teams in the SEC at each position.
As we continue our position group previews of each SEC team and where Kentucky lands amongst their foes, we turn our attention to the offensive line. At all levels of football, but especially the SEC, you have to be strong in the trenches to compete against the top of this conference. Will Stein knows this, which is why he invested a lot of resources to overhaul this offensive line. Kentucky spent big up front to give 27-year-old offensive line coach Cutter Leftwich the talent to revive the big blue wall.
Ryan Silverfield has a ton to overcome in his first season as the Razorbacks head coach, and the offensive line could be the detriment of this offense. He brought Malachi Breland over from Memphis to be his starting left guard, and Bryant Williams the Louisiana transfer to be the starting right tackle. This is an inexperienced group across the board that will have a large task at hand, facing a brutal schedule with multiple game wreckers on the defensive line.
Jeff Lebby brought in a couple of SEC transfers to start at each guard spot, including Arkansas transfer LJ Prudhomme and LSU transfer DJ Chester. Jakheem Shumpert-Perkins and Blake Steen are expected to man the tackle spots. The Bulldogs offense have the firepower to be an explosive offense, but the offensive line will determine their overall ceiling as an offense in 2026.
Auburn's entire starting offensive line this season will be from the transfer portal, a theme of Alex Golesh is bringing guys with him from South Florida to help create continuity. Center Cole Best and right guard Cole Skinner follow Golesh over from the Bulls, and I am hesitant on being confident this plan will work out with the amount of USF players being brought in offensively. Michigan State transfer Stanton Ramil will be the left tackle, and James Madison transfer Jo Simmons will be the right tackle.

The Jacksonville Jaguars had their first training camp practice with new running back Chris Rodriguez in attendance, though head coach Liam Coen said it offered only a small glimpse into what Rodriguez can offer.
Rodriguez missed much of Jacksonville's offseason program while recovering from surgery on a foot injury, delaying his opportunity to begin fighting for a role in the backfield.
The Jaguars signed the former Commanders running back after Travis Etienne departed in free agency, but Rodriguez's value is tied largely to a bruising style that is difficult to evaluate before the pads come on.
"What he brings to this team, I don't think any of us are going to see throughout the entire training camp, honestly," Coen said. "Until we play tackle football, it's going to be very difficult for all of us here to gain a true appreciation for who he is and what he does. I've seen it, so I do appreciate his skill set and what he brings. But just as a pro, he's a good dude. He doesn't say a ton, but he's tough. He's one of those glass-eaters. He is. He's going to run through a wall for his teammates, for his coaches, for this organization when the time comes."
Coen also said it had been difficult for Rodriguez to miss earlier training opportunities in the offseason as he rehabbed from surgery.

Ahead of their first practice, the team announced the addition of four new coaches who have joined head coach Robert Saleh's staff for training camp as part of the NFL's Bill Walsh Diversity Coaching Fellowship program: D'Anthony Batiste (offensive line), Malik Davis (defensive line), Ben Wilkerson (special teams) and Lucy Phan (performance).
These coaches were selected by Saleh and running backs coach Randy Jordan, the ***** ans' Bill Walsh Diversity Coaching Fellowship Coordinator, to help them gain experience and potentially work toward full-time NFL coaching.
Batiste will return to the organization after serving in a similar role during offseason activities. A former NFL offensive tackle, he currently serves as an intern strength and conditioning coach for the University of Las Vegas.
Davis will come to the ***** ans to work with the defensive line, a position he is familiar with, currently serving as a defensive line ***** yst/defensive graduate ***** istant at Texas A&M. After starting his career as a student defensive ***** istant at Georgia Southern, he has also held defensive coaching roles with the University of Cincinnati and at South Alabama.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers nose tackle Vita Vea is now missing training camp for a different reason.
One day after reports emerged that the two-time Pro Bowler had requested a trade from the Bucs, head coach Todd Bowles said Wednesday that Vea "tweaked something" in his back during Tuesday's conditioning run at the start of training camp.
Bowles also announced that LT Tristan Wirfs suffered a hamstring injury during the same conditioning run, calling Wirfs "day to day."
It's not clear how serious Vea's injury is, although Bowles didn't appear concerned and the fact that Vea attempted the conditioning run at least suggests he was willing to participate in part of camp activities. Neither Vea nor Wirfs practiced Wednesday, although Vea was seen engaging with teammates on the field through defensive line drills.
Bowles also said that the Bucs have not engaged in any internal or external trade talk to this point with Vea. The two sides have been at odds over Vea's contract, which is set to pay him $17 million in 2026 and expires after this coming season.

Jacksonville Jaguars' second-year linebacker Jack Kiser exited Wednesday's training camp practice and did not return.
According to ESPN's Michael DiRocco, Kiser was injured during an 11-on-11 team period and grabbed his right knee when he was on the ground.
Afterward, head coach Liam Coen said that Kiser will have an MRI on Wednesday night to determine the severity of the injury.
A fourth-round pick by the Jaguars in the 2025 NFL draft, Kiser's greatest impact came on special teams, where he played 191 snaps from Weeks 1 through 15, contributing to four of the six phases regularly. He recorded four total tackles and graded out well by PFF's metrics.
Kiser played only 43 defensive snaps on the season, appearing in four games.

The Baltimore Ravens got some fantastic news on the first day of practice at training camp. Pro Bowl defensive tackle Nnamdi Madubuike was cleared to return after sustaining a career-threatening neck injury last season.
Madubuike was spotted in uniform ready to take part in practice Wednesday.
That's quite the development for both Madubuike and the team. After making the Pro Bowl in both 2023 and 2024, Madubuike sustained a serious neck injury during the team's Week 2 game against the Cleveland Browns last season.
Following that injury, there was concern over whether Madubuike would be able to play football again. That question lingered into April, when it was reported Madubuike underwent neck surgery that had doctors optimistic about his chances of getting back on the field in 2026.
Some cold water was thrown on that report just days before the Ravens opened training camp. On Saturday, the team placed Madubuike on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list. While the team still believed Madubuike would return in 2026, it was possible the nose tackle would need some time before returning to the field.

Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles addressed defensive tackle Vita Vea sitting out practice during a Wednesday press conference from training camp.
Vea was an observer during the team's first practice of camp, which was seen by most as part of the ongoing contract impasse that led Vea to request a trade away from the team this week. Bowles said that Vea's absence from drills was not due to the contract, however, and is a result of the veteran tweaking his back during the team's conditioning test on Tuesday.
Bowles also said that the team has not had any internal discussions about trading Vea in the wake of his request.
Left tackle Tristan Wirfs is also on the sideline at the moment. Bowles said that he hurt his hamstring during the conditioning test and is considered day-to-day moving forward.

USC football plays Penn State this season. Nittany Lions Wire looked at PSU pass rusher Max Granville.
"Granville enrolled early at Penn State before a season ending injury caused him to miss the 2025 season. In his true freshman season however, he appeared in seven games, logging a tackle and a pass breakup. Since Granville can play in a hybrid role, many project that not only will he start at the "Leo" spot(off the edge/outside linebacker), but that he can rotate easily between both. He has the size and length to use his bend around offensive tackles but the lateral range to set the edge in a linebacker role. It is because of this versatility that Granville is expected to log double digit sacks."
Clearly, Max Granville is expected to be a high-impact player on the Penn State defense. What is tricky about USC's attempt to counteract him is that he could play different positions and line up at different spots on the field. Penn State can change up its defensive looks in an attempt to confuse USC quarterback Jayden Maiava. USC's offensive line ****** ignments need to be very clear. Communication at the offensive line before the snap has to be precise, consistent and well-integrated. USC is playing Penn State on the road, so the Trojans have to have a system in place for communicating signals which is reliable and won't create mix-ups. USC cannot allow Max Granville to make negative plays which throw a monkey wrench into the Trojans' offensive possessions.

The Arizona Cardinals will face the Philadelphia Eagles in the 2026 regular season, and that means facing a much richer dominant defensive lineman. The Eagles agreed to a huge, four-year, $152 million contract extension with Jalen Carter. The deal is worth up to $160 million, meaning the potential for a $40 million per-year average.
In three NFL seasons, he has been a Pro Bowler twice and a second-team All-Pro once.
This is significant for the Cardinals because they have a promising young defensive tackle in Walter Nolen, who, in limited playing time as a rookie, looked dominant.
Nolen is not eligible for a contract extension until 2028, but if he is what the team and fans believe and hope he can be, it means he will be very expensive to extend. In two years, top young defensive tackles will certainly be averaging more than $40 million per year.
Now, worrying about that now is a little foolish, but it is something to watch, especially with Nolen's potential.
