ATLANTA (AP) — Ronald Acuña Jr. homered to spark an eight-run fourth inning and Tyler Mahle turned in another stellar outing to lead the Atlanta Braves to their second straight victory over the Philadelphia Phillies, 12-2 on Saturday night.
The Braves had to rally three times in 11 innings to win the series opener between the two top NL East teams. This one was a lot easier.
Acuña hit a towering shot that barely cleared the wall in front of the Phillies bullpen off Brooks Raley (5-7), who took the loss for the second straight night. Acuña tacked on a run-scoring single to close out the big inning.
Philadelphia was one out from escaping the inning with no further damage. Ozzie Albies walked and Michael Harris II singled before the Phillies, going with a bullpen game after Jesús Luzardo was scratched with a tight shoulder, called in Grant Holman for his first big league appearance of the season.
Mauricio Dubón had a two-run single, Drake Baldwin brought in two more runs with a double off the wall, and some sloppy play by the Phillies led to five unearned runs in the fourth. Bryson Stott had a throwing error on a routine play that would've ended the inning, and another run scored on a wild pitch.

Both 37, they represent both the tragedy and the resolve of 9/11, the devastation of loss and the strength of resilience. Brielle's father Victor was the captain of United Flight 175, the plane which impacted the South Tower … where Sean's father, Patrick, worked on the 84th floor.
The two were just 10 years old when their fathers died. They met two years later at Camp Better Days, a camp established to help children who had lost a parent on 9/11, and were married on September 9, 2017. And on Friday night, they walked out on the field together — Brielle wearing a Derek Jeter jersey, Sean bravely wearing a Mike Piazza Mets one — showing that joy can come from even the most horrifying of days.

Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark is in the middle of a strong season. While a lingering back injury has consistently led to Clark landing on the injury report, she has been able to stay on the floor for the most part. Clark, however, was limited to only 13 games played last year — which happened to be Sophie Cunningham's first season with the Fever. 2026 has given Cunningham an opportunity to see Clark's game on a more consistent basis, and one specific element of Clark's approach has especially impressed the WNBA veteran.
"I will say, yeah, she (Clark) didn't play last year and that was my first time really being on the team and being her teammate, but I really do feel like this year she is using her body so, so well," Cunningham said on her new podcast, No Hesitation with Sophie Cunningham Drew Hanlen. "Like she's strong, she's using the glass. Her jump-shots are going in and it's efficient and it's good for us. But I do think that, like, her body control this year has been huge."
Clark's 22.5 points per game, 45.6 percent field goal percentage and 37.3 three-point percentage all represent career-high marks. She may not win the WNBA MVP Award with players such as A'ja Wilson and her Fever teammate Kelsey Mitchell also playing at high levels, but Clark will certainly be in the conversation. She could even be a top three finalist for the first time (Clark finished fourth during her rookie season in 2024).

Two Colts defensive backs were fined for preseason infractions that did not include on-field penalties.
Veteran cornerback Cam Taylor-Britt was fined $7,791 for striking/kicking/tripping/kneeing in the team's preseason finale against the Detroit Lions, and safety Trey Washington was fined $5,583 for a facemask in the team's preseason loss to Atlanta.
Neither defensive back was flagged for a penalty on the play that led to their fines.
Washington's face mask happened on a 20-yard completion from Falcons quarterback Jack Strand to wide receiver Chris Blair in the second quarter of the preseason game at Lucas Oil Stadium. Washington is listed as one of two tacklers on the play; former Colts cornerback Mekhi Blackmon was also involved in the tackle.

Florida running back Jadan Baugh opened the season with 160 yards and three touchdowns on 14 carries, pushing him past the 2,000-yard mark for his career.
Baugh is the 20th player in program history to reach 2,000 yards on the ground, and he now sits at 2,003 through 26 career games. The junior is already climbing a crowded part of Florida's record book, with James Jones (2,068), Mike Gillislee (2,072) and Deshawn Wynn (2,077) all within 75 yards.
The opener against FAU also marked Baugh's sixth career 100-yard rushing game and moved him to 18 career rushing touchdowns, good for No. 16 in program history. That gives this season a second record-book race to track alongside his yardage total.
Baugh is coming off a 1,170-yard sophomore season that already placed him among the most productive backs in Florida history. He became just the third underclassman in program history to rush for 1,000 yards in a season, joining Emmitt Smith and Errict Rhett. Another big year could push Baugh well into the top 10 — and potentially much higher — on Florida's career rushing list.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Jonathan Aranda hit a three-run home run in the 10th inning to give the Tampa Bay Rays a 6-3 victory over the Texas Rangers on Saturday night.
Tampa Bay (85-57) has won two straight after losing the opener of the four-game series and has the best record in the American League at 85-57.
The Rangers (70-73) went into the game facing their largest deficit in the AL West race at three games. Texas trails Cleveland by two games in the race for the league's final wild card.
Taylor Walls opened the 10th with a sacrifice bunt that advanced automatic runner Jorge Mateo to third base. Rangers closer Jacon Latz (3-2) then intentionally walked Yandy Díaz before Aranda homered into the home bullpen beyond right field.
Tampa Bay's Tyler Wells (4-2) pitched two scoreless innings to earn the victory.

Arizona State running backs coach Shaun Aguano is used to having a 1,000-yard rusher in his stable. It's pretty much been the norm during his seven-year tenure in Tempe.
But now, with so much depth at the position, several guys are expected to share the load.
Maybe ******* ody reaches 1,000, but multiple backs hit between 500 and 700. The ever-optimistic Aguano offers something better.
"I envision two 1,000-yard rushers," he said. "That's my dream."

San Diego Wave and Juventus are in negotiations regarding a season-long loan for Barbara Bonansea until June 2027.
The 35-year-old's contract is due to expire next summer but discussions are under way regarding a contract extension that would keep the forward at the Italian club until June 2028. Nothing has been agreed yet.
A highly experienced player, Bonansea has been a mainstay for Juventus, amassing over 200 appearances, winning 15 trophies, including six Serie A league **** les across nine seasons. Juventus have just qualified for the league phase of the Champions League and start their domestic campaign later this month.
On the international stage, Bonansea represented Italy at the 2019 World Cup and the 2025 European Championships, opening the scoring against England in the semi-final.
The loan move, managed by the same agency A&V sports, is similar to fellow Italy international Cristiana Girelli who joined Bay FC in February and has had her loan extended until next summer.

NEW YORK (AP) — The Alex Eala fans came bearing Filipino flags, and wearing hats telling her to fight on ("Laban Alex"). They cheered her sizzling groundstrokes, documented her volleys and serves in photos and video, and in some cases FaceTimed with friends or family.
And this was only at the practice courts.
It was about four hours before Eala was to take the court for her first-round U.S. Open match Monday night, and every seat at the practice court was filled. Many of Eala's fans didn't have tickets for the evening session. But they'd come to see their idol hit some tennis ******* .
It was hardly surprising, given the enormous, ardent, ever-growing fan base that now surrounds the charismatic 21-year-old. This summer has seen Eala beat Iga Swiatek at Wimbledon and win her first tour singles ******* le, at Washington. She's at a career-best 18th in the world, and many think she'll continue her ascent.
One of the fans watching on a rainy afternoon was Andrea Belen, at 21 the same age as Eala. Belen, a premed student at New York University, explained that she hadn't been a big tennis fan until Eala came along — someone who looked just like her.

For many of us, we lost even more — an unforgettable friend and mentor.
When news broke Saturday afternoon that Joe Palmquist — a former longtime sports editor and managing editor at the S-R — had lost his battle to a severe lung disease possibly related to a bone marrow transplant nearly a year ago, tributes and photos flowed back and forth on a group chat that included more than two dozen colleagues.
Joe would have turned 67 in September.
"Couldn't ask for a better friend than Joe," wrote Jeff Jordan, the S-R sports editor who hired most of us, including Palmquist as his ***** istant back in 1988. "On one of those trying days Joe could lift your spirits and send you to a happy place with that wonderful, high-pitched mocking 'are-you-crazy' laugh."

Aug. 29—CHAMPAIGN — Brad Underwood's address to the crowd at Atkins Golf Club ahead of the 25th annual Illini Rebounders/Lou Henson Golf Outing included a mea culpa.
The Illinois men's basketball coach brought up the sting of this past April's Final Four loss to Connecticut and his insistence the Illini would get back to that stage during his 31/2 minute speech. He also thanked the fans in attendance for their consistent support of the program he's about to enter his 10th season leading.
Then Underwood discussed the recently released nonconference schedule for the 2026-27 season. A 12-game slate featuring multiple games against power-conference teams, but one that notably didn't have any of those teams coming to Champaign to play at State Farm Center.
"I will apologize," Underwood said. "I'll take the heat. It was very hard. Because we're expected to be OK, ****** ody wanted to come to Champaign and play us in a home-and-home."
Illinois, of course, is expected to be more than just "OK" this coming season. Five returning rotation players from a Final Four team with a high-level transfer addition and a six-man freshman class led by five-star guard Quentin Coleman has the Illini in the conversation among the best teams in the country.

Itabaiana, Barra, and Anápolis are fighting to avoid the drop. This year, only two teams will be relegated to the Fourth Division.
Volta Redonda and Ituano are the only teams with nothing left to play for in the final round of Série C: they can no longer finish in the top eight and are safe from the bottom two.

Walsh's athletics Twitter account posted the following message at 8:58 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 27:
"The home opener vs. [Clark County] Springfield High School has been cancelled due to illnesses within Springfield's program. They have decided to forfeit the game.
"For those who purchased tickets in advance, please note that our athletic department will be issuing refunds in the coming days."

While Class 3A No. 15 Sequoyah raced away from Class 4A No. 14 Verdigris early Tuesday night, the junior outside hitter and reigning Claremore Progress All-County Most Valuable Player was content to work in the shadows.
Gibson dialed into her defensive game, digging up attacks while Bella Brown and Alice Michaels supplied much of the early offense at the Verdigris Activity Center.
She was lurking, though.

The 2026 Taunton Daily Gazette Boys Tennis Player of the Year and junior captain firmly established himself as one of the top players in all of MIAA Division 3, going a perfect 13-0 at first singles without dropping a set, earning a unanimous South Coast Conference MVP. At the USTA Massachusetts High School State Individual Singles and Doubles Championships, he was seeded No. 29 of 65 and reached the Round of 32, falling to the eventual runner-up, Newton North's Johnny Wastcoat.
Taunton hockey's Jamie Vallarelli, who enters his senior season tied with Taunton High Athletic Hall of Famer Jeff Gallagher for most points in program history (139), finished as the boys runner up with 17% of the vote. Taunton football's Corbin Melo, who was also salutatorian and a baseball captain and now plays football for Amherst College, received 9% to come in third.

The final seven of the total 36 participants will be confirmed late on Wednesday evening after the end of the second-leg playoff matches. They will be divided into four pots of nine clubs each based on their UEFA coefficient. At the end of the 2025/26 season, Borussia Dortmund were 11th in the rankings with 100.750 points, topped by Bayern Munich, and will therefore be placed in pot two.
Placement in the four different pots has no direct impact on whether a club will face what are commonly referred to as "easy" or "difficult" opponents. A computer will draw two clubs from each of the four pots as opponents for each of the 36 participants in the league phase. Matches between two teams from the same **** ociation are not possible. This means BVB cannot face Bayern Munich, RB Leipzig or VfB Stuttgart in the league phase.
As in the previous two seasons, each club will play four home matches and four away matches. The results will go into one combined table featuring all 36 participants. The top eight teams will qualify directly for the round of 16, while the teams placed ninth to 24th will compete in a playoff format for the remaining eight spots in the last 16.
The league phase, consisting of eight matchdays, begins on 8 September 2026 and ends on 27 January 2027. The playoffs will be played from mid-February 2027.
The UEFA Champions League schedule, including match dates and kick-off times, will be announced by Saturday, 29 August at the latest. UEFA has announced that it will publish a corresponding notice on its social media channels shortly before the schedule is released.

Jed York was arrested in East Palestine, Ohio, over the weekend and found guilty of two misdemeanor charges. According to WKBN News, York pleaded no contest Monday morning to misdemeanor charges of disorderly conduct and possessing criminal tools. He was arrested sometime on Sunday in East Palestine, before posting bond for $5,000.

According to court records, York was sentenced to two days in the Columbiana County Jail, which he'd serve concurrently with a credit for a day served. York was also ordered to pay $1,150 in fines.
Court orders show that $160 seized will be forfeited to the Mahoning Valley Human Trafficking Task Force as part of the agreement. He did get his phone back.
If you're wondering why York was in the area, he went to Cardinal Mooney High School in the Youngstown area.

Didn't have a lot to do today, in his 100th game for Reading, yet rarely exuded the confidence that we've seen in previous years, and when we were once again crying out for a quick throw to set the speedy full-backs/wingers on a counter, he held onto it too long and played the ball centrally to a centre-back, too often.
Pereira struggled to claim an early free-kick in the third minute and later came out from the goal to help Andy Rinomhota shepherd a long AFC Wimbledon ball out of play. He looked initially hesitant but eventually dealt with it well.
In the second half, Pereira struggled to punch the ball clear from a corner in the 85th minute due to the crowd of people in front of him, but did well late on in the game to rush out from the line to intercept a through-ball that broke the Reading defensive line.
"Dokes" provided a real presence on the right, getting forward throughout the early stages and generally looked comfortable dealing with any Wimbledon threat down Reading's right. He built upon this in the second half by becoming a real attacking outlet, and was unfortunate to not have picked up an ***** ist.
Notable moments from the second half: a fantastic run down the right in the 51st minute using his pace to get round the outside of the Wimbledon left-back and into the area, whose cross found Josh Stokes, followed by another fantastic run through the middle and through-ball to find Jack Marriott in the 54th minute.

PHOENIX (AP) — Jordan Lawlar hit a two-run homer and had a career-high three RBIs, Eduardo Rodriguez threw 5 2/3 strong innings and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Cincinnati Reds 9-0 on Friday night to keep pace in the National League playoff race.
The D-backs remain a game behind the San Diego Padres for the final NL wild-card spot.
The 24-year-old Lawlar had the first three-hit game of his career while Geraldo Perdomo also had a three hits. Gabriel Moreno, Tim Tawa and Corbin Carroll all had two hits. Lawlar's two-run shot to left field in the second gave the D-backs a 3-0 lead and was the center fielder's second homer in the big leagues.
Rodriguez (13-4) continued his brilliant season, giving up four hits and two walks while striking out four. The left-handed All-Star lowered his ERA to 2.61.
The Reds have dropped six of their past eight games.

The BSD staff recently voted for the top 10 Penn State players heading into 2026. The votes are dictated by how the players are expected to perform in the upcoming season, without factoring in long-term or NFL potential. Each member submitted a ballot with players ranked 1-10, with a first-place vote being 10 points, a second-place vote worth nine points, and so on. Up next is offensive lineman Anthony Donkoh.
As a four-star recruit coming out of Lightridge High School in Aldie, Virginia, Donkoh committed to Penn State as part of the program's 2023 class. After redshirting his true freshman year in 2023 while appearing in four games, Anthony saw his playing time drastically increase in 2024, appearing in 11 games and starting 10 of them for a Nittany Lion squad that ultimately made it to the College Football Playoff semifinals. Despite trying times in 2025, Donkoh played a critical role on the offensive line as he played in all 13 of PSU's games, starting in 11 of them, and notably stumping for Terry Smith to get the permanent head coaching job after the Nittany Lions waxed Nebraska at home on Senior Night, when the coaching search was still in limbo.
There's a reason why Anthony joined Rocco Becht and Tony Rojas in Chicago for Big Ten Media Days last month. In addition to being a highly talented player, he is also the most experienced returning offensive lineman and will help anchor the right side of the line. How the O-line performs as a unit in 2026 hinges a good amount on whether Anthony picks up where he left off from last season. Given his career trajectory thus far, it's a pretty good bet that he will do so.

For the 90 players on the Houston Texans, there are multiple opportunities to show why they should make the final 53-man roster between training camp, preseason games and joint practices.
However, head coach DeMeco Ryans does not weigh one more than the other. Rather, he looks at the improvement of players every day in all areas.
"There's no percentage to me," Ryans said. "I take everything into account. It's not just one is heavier than the other. I just look at how guys are working every single day. How are they improving every single day? That's what I'll take into consideration. You get towards the end, you're talking about backup guys, role guys, how many things can that guy do for us? Where is his versatility? Versatility helps a lot when you have to limit the roster. You have unique guys who can do multiple things on game day, so that definitely helps."
Many of the players fighting for a roster spot helped their case during Houston's first preseason matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers, despite the ending. Wide receiver Jared Wayne was one of those players; he finished the game with three receptions for 17 yards, including scoring the only touchdown of the game for Houston.
Houston's next preseason game against the Las Vegas Raiders this coming Thursday should help provide an idea of some of the other players who may make the final 53. The Texans will also be looking to be more competitive as a whole after their sloppy overall performance against the Chargers.

Two of the state's top three teams suffered tough inter-sectional losses while top ranked Bishop Gorman looks ready for their ******* anic top five national matchup.
Another jam-packed slate is on deck as teams continue their quests for a state ******* le. Below are the top 25 Nevada high school football teams, according to the Massey Ratings, as of Aug. 18.
The Gaels beat Losee 41-0 in a game that was called at halftime due to weather. A lighting storm in the area delayed the game nearly two hours. Junior quarterback Ace Amina got the start and finished an efficient 4-4 for 70 yards and a touchdown and the defense was lights out led by fast rising sophomore edge Braylon Ivory. Next up for Gorman will be their highly anticipated matchup against national power Bellflower (Calif.) St. John Bosco August 21 in a game pitting a pair of perennial top 10 powers.
Liberty lost a tough one to a very good Honolulu (Hawaii) Mililani team 31-24. The Patriots led at halftime 24-14 but couldn't get the offense rolling in the second half. BYU running back commit Ezra Sanelivi had an impressive 1st half including a 56 yard touchdown run and athlete Selby Griego had nearly 200 all-purpose yards and a touchdown. The Patriots have a couple of weeks off and then will have another tough test in Lehi (Utah) Skyridge, ranked No. 5 in the state, on September 4.
The Cougars kick off their season on Saturday (Aug. 22) against Carson.

The Boston Red Sox have dealt with a lot of injuries throughout the season, which is part of why they struggled at times.
Had the Red Sox been fully healthy throughout a lot of this campaign, there's a very strong argument to be made that we could be looking at not only an elite team, but perhaps the best in all of Major League Baseball.
The Red Sox are that good from top to bottom, so it's honestly not surprising to see them find this level of success.
At the same time, some players are dealing with injuries and trying to push through them. One of those guys is Patrick Sandoval, a left-handed pitcher who the Red Sox have been trying to work with to get back to the level that everybody knows he can throw the baseball at.

Liverpool have now completed their pre-season programme, signing off with a 2-0 win over Como, and the discussion has quickly shifted towards whether Andoni Iraola's side are ready for the competitive action ahead. In his post-match ***** sment, David Lynch weighed up the positives and concerns from the final friendly, with a particular focus on Liverpool's ability to sustain performance levels, the emerging 4-4-2 system, and a pair of encouraging defensive debuts.
As Lynch put it, "that's the preseason done. No more friendly games for Liverpool until the real stuff starts." From there, the central issue was obvious, "is this team ready to compete in another Premier League season, another Champions League season, the League Cup and the FA Cup to go with it as well."
The result itself was positive, a 2-0 victory, and Lynch noted that "not a bad way to sign off for the summer really." He pointed to the underlying numbers that favoured Liverpool in key areas, saying, "the expected goals from this game and it's 1.47 for Liverpool, 0.52 for Como," while also noting that Liverpool "created three big chances to Como's zero."
That pattern had previously been easier to dismiss because of substitutions and rotation, but this time the concern felt more relevant. Lynch explained, "for the first time we've seen a lot of players get the full game or in some cases a lot of the game maybe two thirds of the game. So in theory Liverpool should have been able to replicate the first half performance in the second half of this game and unfortunately we didn't really see that."
The second-half figures underlined the point, "9-2 to Ko on the shots, 3-0 on the shots on target in the second half." With Newcastle next, his warning was direct, "they have to be better. They have to be more capable of playing 90 minutes." He added that Iraola's earlier comments about not being strong enough across the full match had been borne out again, saying, "what he'll have seen today would have convinced him again that maybe they aren't just strong enough yet to put together the 90-minute performance that they will need against Newcastle and need throughout the season going forward."

It was only a matter of time before Scottie Scheffler pulled it off again.
After a season full of near-misses and second-place finishes, the top-ranked golfer in the world absolutely ran away with the FedEx St. Jude Championship on Sunday. Scheffler posted a final-round 66 at TPC Southwind in Memphis, which ended up giving him a massive eight-shot victory to open the PGA Tour's playoffs.
The win not only earned Scheffler a $3.6 million check, but it also solidified his spot atop the FedExCup standings with just two tournaments left on the schedule.
Scheffler has been firmly at No. 1 in the Official World Golf Rankings and the FedExCup standings throughout the year, but he's struggled to actually win on Tour since his season-opening victory back in January. Since then, Scheffler has finished in second five times, including in his last start at the 3M Open. A pair of those runner-up outings came in the form of a playoff loss, too.
While 11 top-10 finishes and a win is hard for anyone to complain about, it felt like a weird step back for the man who had dominated golf in vintage Tiger Woods-like fashion over the past several seasons.

Nasir Wyatt's role in 2025 was as limited as it gets, as the Oregon Ducks edge rusher logged just 39 snaps primarily on third downs and blitz situations. When Wyatt was on the field, it might as well have been a tell that the Ducks were sending pressure.
And it worked extremely well albeit in just 39 snaps, as Wyatt recorded 11 tackles, was third on the team with three sacks and forced a fumble. But entering his true sophomore season, he and the Oregon defensive coaches have a bigger plan for the now-bulked up Wyatt, who's increased not only his weight, but his football acumen as well.
"Without getting into too much detail, Nas is the Swiss Army, and I think the biggest thing he's done is he's really enhanced his football intelligence," Oregon edge coach Kam Araghi told reporters this week. " He's wanting to know the ins and outs of every single defense. What's the strength? What's the stressor of each call? Where can I take my shot and pass rush? When can I not? When do I got to really be conscious of level rushing, and that's helped this game go to the next level? And in result, he's making more havoc for him, having more havoc, and it's a product of the work that he's put in."
Just recently, Wyatt was named by CBS Sports' Brad Crawford as a major riser during the first week of fall camp, with defensive coordinator Chris Hampton claiming Wyatt has a chance to be an "every-down player" this fall. That goes hand-in-hand with Wyatt's supposed weight gain, as he tipped the scales at just 228 pounds last season, a meager mark for a player operating around the line of scrimmage against offensive linemen.
But with a larger, more imposing frame, opposing offenses will be much less incentivized to run the ball Wyatt's way in 2026, allowing him more trust from the coaches and the ability to be on the field in all types of situations.

Wide receiver Keon Coleman came under fire at the end of the 2025 Bills season, but he got his 2026 season off on the right foot.
Quarterback Josh Allen found Coleman in the end zone for a nine-yard score at the end of Buffalo's second offensive possession in Saturday's preseason opener against the Panthers. The Bills are at home, which makes the touchdown the first one at the new Highmark Stadium.
The throw was the final one of the afternoon for Allen. He connected with new Bills wideout DJ Moore three times for 61 yards over his two series of work and finished the day 6-of-8 for 111 yards, so it was a positive first day for the quarterback in his new digs.
Kyle Allen took over at quarterback for the Bills, who will play their first regular season game at the stadium on Thursday night in Week 2.
