The Detroit Lions may be doing more than simply monitoring the Joey Porter Jr. situation.
According to a new report from Jeff Risdon, Detroit has contacted the Pittsburgh Steelers about the veteran cornerback's availability, potentially turning weeks of speculation into something more tangible.
Risdon said he has been told from the Pittsburgh side that conversations between the teams have taken place.
"I can tell you that I know that the Lions have approached the Steelers," Risdon said on Monday. "I don't know how receptive the Steelers were. I don't know what the Lions offered, if anything. I know that they have talked. I got that from a reliable source from the Pittsburgh side. Will anything happen? I don't know."
That does not mean a trade is imminent. It does mean the Porter-to-Detroit idea may have moved beyond the purely hypothetical stage.

Carter Bear gave the Detroit Red Wings exactly the kind of opening performance they wanted from one of their most important young forwards.
Bear registered 10 shots on goal and an ***** ist Saturday as Detroit rallied from a two-goal third-period deficit to defeat the Dallas Stars 4-3 in a shootout in its Prospect Tournament opener at the BELFOR Training Center.
According to Detroit Hockey Now's game report, Bear was Detroit's most visible offensive player. His ***** ist came on Jesse Kiiskinen's second-period power-play goal, which tied the game 1-1. Bear started alongside Nate Danielson and Kiiskinen on Detroit's top line.
Detroit eventually needed late goals from Noah Dower Nilsson and Théo Rochette before Trey Augustine made eight shootout saves and Kienan Draper scored the winner on the Red Wings' eighth attempt.
Bear's performance stood out even in a game loaded with notable prospects.

Who missed the most INSANE match of the 2026 Brasileirão?
The 27th round of the competition began with Coritiba versus Athletico this Friday (11).
And it was a CHAOTIC clash at Couto Pereira, the stage for the 401st Athletiba in history.
There were cards, scuffles, puddles, and even a red card based on the "Vini Jr. Law."
Furacão had a one-man advantage and was leading 3-1 until the 90th minute at the home of their biggest rival.

Sep. 10—To preview Washington State's next game, a road test against Big 12 foe Kansas State, The Spokesman-Review conferred with K-State beat writer Ryan Gilbert, who covers the Wildcats for GoPowercat.
Here is our Q&A.
1. How did K-State's offensive line look against Nicholls, and do the injuries to John Pastore and George Fitzpatrick look to hamper the Cats as much as it might seem?
The offensive line checked all the boxes it could on Saturday. There were a lot of questions surrounding this group entering the season, but game No. 1 was a success. That being said, Nicholls is just not a good football team, so it's tough to get too excited over that performance in the trenches. K-State simply had the bigger, more physically dominant dudes at the point of contact. Anything other than a promising night would have been a concern for the offensive line.
George Fitzpatrick not being able to give it a go didn't help matters, but Collin Klein & Co. certainly couldn't have been caught off guard when they learned he had to be sidelined this season. His health condition from last offseason just lingered and lingered, so it's not like this just happened out of nowhere. There was ample time to create a backup plan. John Pastore, though, was supposed to be not just a starter but a true star at left tackle. His injury, which will sideline him for the season, happened about a month before the season, and then Tanner Morley also had to miss some time late in camp, so everything kind of just compounded at once.

Outside the quarterback battle, no player on Iowa's roster made more headlines this offseason than transfer wide receiver Tony Diaz.
Diaz transferred from UT Rio Grande Valley, hoping to become a difference-maker for the Hawkeyes' offense. The 5-foot-10 third-year receiver was super impressive throughout the summer, reportedly dominating in camp and earning a starting spot in Week 1. Plenty of national media members had taken notice of Diaz as the season neared. Just hours before Iowa's season opener on Saturday, that trend continued.
ESPN's "College GameDay" crew was in Baton Rouge, La., on Saturday morning in anticipation of the LSU-Clemson game. During the show, the conversation shifted to the Hawkeyes, with the crew giving their thoughts on Kirk Ferentz's team entering the new season. Soon after, ***** yst Pat McAfee brought up Diaz, prompting host Rece Davis to list his 2025 stat line.
In Iowa's opener against Northern Illinois, Diaz lived up to the GameDay hype. Diaz finished with seven grabs for 84 yards and a touchdown. The San Marcos, Texas, product had a good rapport with both Hank Brown and Jeremy Hecklinski. Diaz won on his routes, created a ton of separation, and looked extremely shifty in the open field.
"If he's out there healthy, that's what he does. He got banged up a little bit in the spring, but he just plays hard and he plays fast also. He is fast and plays fast. As dumb as it sounds, he's really aggressive catching ***** . That does sound dumb and kind of silly in some certain ways.

PISCATAWAY, N.J. — Remember the name Lilia Calvert, she's made her arrival, and she's not going anywhere.
Rutgers beat Princeton 4-2 on Sunday at Yurcak Field, and the freshman who gave away the penalty that let the Tigers back into the match in the first half scored twice in four minutes to end it in the second. Both were the first goals of her college career. Both came on the only two shots she took all night. In between, she was pulled off the field twice.
Rutgers arrived at 0-1-3, four matches into a season that has produced a shot profile better than its record and nothing in the win column to show for either. The Scarlet Knights had led Providence by two with half an hour left eight days earlier and gave the lead back inside 69 seconds. Before that came two scoreless road draws and an opening loss at Tennessee. This was the second home match Rutgers has actually played this fall, with the Boston College opener still unscheduled after the weather took it.
Princeton came in at 2-3-0 and with considerably more to lose. The Tigers were picked first in the Ivy League preseason poll after winning a second straight Ivy **** le in 2025, opened the season 3-0 over Loyola (Md.), and were playing their second match in four days following a trip to Columbus to face No. 8 Ohio State. Sean Driscoll, in his 12th season, had platooned Cecilia Cerone and Sydney Romano in goal through the nonconference schedule and gotten two shutouts out of the arrangement. Cerone played all 90 on Sunday and conceded four.

Michigan football earned the second chance of a lifetime on Saturday night when a bizarre clock quirk gave the team an extra second to get a walk-off touchdown over Western Michigan at the Big House.
Michigan quarterback Bryce Underwood hit wide receiver JJ Buchanan with a controversial extra second added to the clock to pull off the come-from-behind victory over the visiting Broncos.
Did Western Michigan get robbed in Michigan loss on second added to clock?
After the dramatic finish, Wolverines fans actually stormed the field to celebrate the win. Yes, they stormed the field after beating... Western Michigan. That actually happened.
Obviously, it was an emotional finish that looked like a loss... but Michigan fans storming the field after beating Western Michigan? Really?

Liverpool have beaten Real Madrid to a transfer on deadline day in a sensational move.
It has been a slow summer for the Reds in the transfer market.
Ultimately, Richard Hughes secured only three senior signings this summer. Ronald Araujo arrived on loan from Barcelona, Bradley Barcola was signed for close to a club record fee of £123m from Paris Saint Germain and Victor Munoz was brought in from Osasuna.
In isolation the trio are all exciting arrivals who will bolster Liverpool.
It's important to mention Jeremy Jacquet will technically count as a new signing as well given he joined the club this summer after agreeing a move in January.

Denny Hamlin may have bigger hardware on his mind over the next 10 weeks, but NASCAR's top driver through the first 26 races of 2026 finally has a trophy to show for it.
Hamlin finished the regular season atop the NASCAR Cup Series standings, securing the No. 1 seed for the newly revived Chase and a 25-point advantage over Ryan Blaney entering Sunday's postseason opener at Darlington Raceway.
There was just one unusual detail.
With NASCAR returning to a 10-race Chase format this season, the sanctioning body moved away from the official "regular-season champion" designation and trophy that had accompanied the previous playoff system.
Hamlin still got one anyway.

As the 2026-27 NBA season approaches this fall, Bleacher Report released an interesting list, as they ranked the best players by each age. Unexpectedly, there were multiple Houston Rockets players who earned that distinction.
Beginning with the more surprising of the two, Amen Thompson was named as the league's best 23-year-old. Last season, Thompson took a huge jump, playing 79 games and averaging a career-high 18.3 points to go along with 7.8 rebounds, 5.3 ******* ists, 1.5 steals and 0.6 blocks. Although he was snubbed from an All-Defensive selection, Thompson did finish eighth in Defensive Player of Year Award voting. Other notable 23-year-olds that Thompson was selected over include Orlando Magic forward Paolo Banchero and Charlotte Hornets forward Brandon Miller.
As readers may have expected, Kevin Durant (age 37) was the other Rockets forward listed, as Alperen Sengun fell short to Detroit Pistons guard Cade Cunningham among players at the age of 24. A season ago, Durant averaged 26 points per game, tying him for 10th in the league. He also averaged 5.5 rebounds, 4.8 ******* ists, 0.8 steals and 0.9 blocks. James Harden, a former MVP in Houston, was the only other 37-year-old in the same realm as Durant, averaging 23.6 points and eight ******* ists between the Clippers and Cavaliers.

The Washington Nationals are calling up infield prospect Yohandy Morales as part of the September roster expansion, according to reports. MLB insider Yordano Carmona was the first to break the news. Morales will be activated for tomorrow's game against the Atlanta Braves, which would be his MLB debut if he plays. He joins the list of National League prospects looking to make an impact down the stretch.
Jun 17, 2019; Bradenton, FL, USA; Team Jones infielder Yohandy Morales (12) bats during practice at IMG Academy. Mandatory Credit: Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports
The 24-year-old Morales was a second-round draft pick by the Nationals in 2023 out of the University of Miami (FL). He has made his way up through the system since, and last season he was promoted from Double-A Harrisburg to Triple-A Rochester, where he has remained through this season. In 2026, Morales' power has gone up precipitously. In 104 games this year, he has a slash line of .286/.363/.519 with 25 home runs, 76 RBI, 19 doubles, and 82 runs scored. Despite these strong numbers, Morales remains outside the Nationals' top 30 prospects on MLB Pipeline's rankings.
Defensively, Morales has seen time at first base and third base, but has primarily played first this season. If he gets extended reps with the Nats in September, odds are it will be at first base. The Nats have used a platoon there since trading Luis García Jr. to the New York Yankees. Former top prospect Brady House has third base covered in Washington for the time being.
Barring some kind of miracle in September, the Nationals will not be making the postseason. They now sit eight games out of the last NL Wild Card spot. While that's not an impossible deficit, the team will likely be more focused on giving their prospects some reps and seeing what they might have on hand next season. The future appears bright in DC, as the Nats have built up a strong farm system during their rebuild since winning the 2019 World Series. Many of those prospects have already become major leaguers, and while the youth movement hasn't gotten them to October yet, it shouldn't be too far off.

News surfaced this spring that the Cleveland Guardians had canceled their $2.8 million agreement with a Dominican prospect known by the name of David Severino. A Friday report from ESPN's Alden Gonzalez revealed that Major League Baseball has suspended the teenage switch hitter after unearthing an age-fraud plot that included a fake identity and led the Guardians to believe the infielder was years younger than he actually is.
David Severino's real name is Daury David Severino Damaso, according to ESPN's report, and he's reportedly 16 years old, not 13 or 14 like the Guardians thought when they agreed to the lucrative pre-deal with him back in December.
Cleveland was reportedly under the impression that Severino would be 17 in 2029, at which point the deal would be finalized and he would be eligible to sign.
The Guardians, notably, aren't facing MLB discipline, per ESPN.
Severino was actually born on April 2, 2010, according to ESPN, which reported that, in 2023, Severino's trainer at the time, Francisco Nieves, allegedly received the approval of the player's parents to concoct the fake identity of David Severino Damaso.

TOPEKA (KSNT) — It was a successful trip to North Dakota for the Hornets.
Emporia State football clinched a season-opening win, 36-30, on the road against Minot State.
After trailing 6-0 early, Ben Harris kept the ball for a nine-yard rush up the middle for a touchdown. The successful extra point gave the Hornets a 7-6 lead.
In the second, Harris found an open Trenden Collins for a 15-yard touchdown pass to maintain ESU's one-point lead, 13-12. Clem McCullough would find success on the ground for a successful two-point conversion, as the Hornets lead 15-12.
Emporia continued to be triumphant on the ground as Victor Chionuma rushed for two yards up the middle to grab the touchdown. A good extra point extended the lead, 22-12.

Barcelona will play their first home LaLiga fixture of the season at the Camp Nou on Thursday, hosting Athletic Club in a midweek encounter.
The hosts arrive in excellent form after an emphatic 5-0 victory over Elche that launched their campaign. Under Hansi Flick, Barcelona have displayed sharp tactics and a potent attacking threat. They have claimed three wins in their past five league outings, with their forward play clicking — averaging just over two goals per game during that period.
FC Barcelona look set to hand a long-awaited club debut to high-profile summer signing Rodri, who has completed successive training sessions following a minor back operation and is expected to be named among the substitutes.
Flick appears ready to tweak his back line at the Spotify Camp Nou, with Pau Cubarsí, Jules Koundé and João Cancelo likely to return to the starting XI after being rested last time out.
The Catalans do, however, face a midfield concern as Gavi is doubtful after suffering a heavy knee contusion against Elche; scans excluded a serious ligament injury, but he missed the squad's final training session.

A few names and reasons come to mind when thinking about the Cincinnati Bengals' decision to make Cody Ford an early cut.
Two names are simple enough: Rookies Connor Lew and Brian Parker. Great camps and preseason for those guys. They look like long-term options of the future.
Here's another one: Jacob Bayer.
Bayer isn't a household name, perhaps not even for Bengals fans. He's a former undrafted free agent who joined the Bengals practice squad last November.
Now, he's shooting up the list of breakout summers for the Bengals. As soon as Ford was gone, according to Paul Dehner Jr. of The Athletic, Bayer was the primary second-team left guard.

The Brooklyn Nets came into the 2026 NBA offseason with the goal of improving the team as much as possible following a 2025-26 season in which they finished with a 20-62 record. Brooklyn's biggest move of the summer was trading for Minnesota Timberwolves forward Julius Randle, but there are some who still believe that the Nets will be at the bottom of the Eastern Conference next season.
"The Nets ... are also here, but Brooklyn did add former All-NBA forward Julius Randle to help provide legitimacy to its rebuild," Jamal Collier wrote for ESPN when discussing where the Nets will finish next season. ESPN's NBA insiders made prediction for all 30 NBA teams and next year, Brooklyn is projected to finish with a 18-64 record, giving them the worst record in the league in this scenario.
"With the league's newest draft lottery rules and the relegation zone in effect, the five teams in this category won't have as much incentive to lose. How that will affect the bottom of the standings will be a storyline all season long," Collier continued. As Collier noted, the new version of the NBA Draft Lottery with the relegation zone will take effect next season, but the Nets have a unique circumstance that may affect their thinking.
The Nets owe their 2027 first-round pick to the Houston Rockets and if they are not trying to get the pick back, they may choose to be as good as possible next season since they will be getting the Rockets' pick. After adding Randle, Brooklyn now has a 1-2 punch with him and sharpshooting forward Michael Porter Jr. that should make them more competitive than they were last season.
However, there are other pundits, sportsbooks like BetMGM, and Brooklyn's fanbase that believe that the Nets are going to win more than 18 games, so next season will be interesting to watch for multiple reasons. If Brooklyn is going to be as bad as ESPN predicts, then the hope is that they aren't blown out as much and that Egor Demin and Mikel Brown Jr. continue to get better.

After having the most dominant preseason win last week, the Chicago Bears had one of the worst preseason losses in Week 2. The Cincinnati Bengals beat them, 27-9, but the score does not even fully demonstrate how badly the Bears played in this game.
Chicago started their opening drive with the starters, including quarterback Caleb Williams, wide receiver Rome Odunze and tight end Colston Loveland. They had a short field after the Bengals' kickoff was short of the landing zone and Williams led the Bears on a 33-yard drive to get them on the board early with a 3-0 lead. That might have been the most positive part of the entire game. The Bears would go the entire game without scoring a touchdown and quarterback Case Keenum struggled throughout the entire first half.
If head coach Ben Johnson was not satisfied after Chicago's preseason victory against the Cleveland Browns, he is going to be livid about this 18-point loss. The Bears struggled with penalties throughout, their third down efficiency was atrocious and quarterback Miller Moss lacked situational awareness at times. However, it was not all bad though with some rookies making a statement.
Here is a look at the good, bad and ugly from the Bears' first loss of the preseason against the Bengals:
Jordan van den Berg and Sam Roush: While their stats are not eye-popping, rookie tight end Sam Roush and rookie defensive tackle Jordan van den Berg had solid performances. Roush finished the game with two receptions for 30 yards, including an impressive 26-yard catch to close out the first quarter. Meanwhile, van den Berg recorded multiple tackles including two solo tackles, and showcased his disruptive play. These are both rookies that are expected to have some playing time in the regular season, so it was good to see them have some solid plays in the preseason.

Shedeur Sanders was down to his final shot to stake a claim to the Cleveland Browns' starting quarterback job. It started very well. Then there was an interception.
Browns coach Todd Monken said before Saturday's preseason game against the Buffalo Bills that he plans to name a quarterback for the regular season early next week, via Cleveland.com. Sanders has been behind Deshaun Watson for most of the offseason and training camp and didn't start Cleveland's first preseason game. Sanders got the start on Saturday, and if Monken sticks with his timeline it was Sanders' last chance to make an impression.
Sanders came out hot, completing his first eight passes including a touchdown. He was driving the Browns again late in the first half, and after a nice 23-yard pass on third-and-15 he made a crucial mistake. Sanders threw behind tight end Jermaine Terry. The ball bounced up and Bills safety Damar Hamlin picked it off. Terry could have made a great catch, but it should have been a routine pass to an open tight end and Sanders missed the target.
If the Browns have been leaning toward Watson, as it has seemed, that interception will give them the reason they need to name him the starter over Sanders.
There hadn't been many signs that Sanders is close to overtaking Watson in the competition to start in Week 1. Watson got the start last week and although he didn't play great, Monken said he thought Watson functioned at a "high level."

After finishing with a 7-10 record in 2025 and making several changes to their front office and coaching staff, the Miami Dolphins made their first pick in the 2026 NFL draft at No. 12 overall, where they took Alabama offensive lineman Kadyn Proctor.
While Proctor played left tackle for the Crimson Tide, the Dolphins are moving him to left guard because they already have Patrick Paul and Austin Jackson playing left and right tackle, respectively.
The Dolphins have only been working on the practice field at training camp for a few weeks and have only played in one preseason game, but Proctor has already thoroughly impressed new head coach Jeff Hafley.
"Proctor's been outstanding," Hafley told reporters on Thursday. "I mean, I just, I can't say enough about him. The guy loves ball. The guy is tough; he's physical. The buy-in has been outstanding. He's fun to be around. He loves coming to work every single day. He's a rookie, right? So he's gonna see some stuff he's never seen before. He's gonna see stuff at practice he's never seen before because it's not our defense, and we didn't game plan against them. So there's gonna be moments where maybe he's late coming back on a game, or maybe they stem any combos to the wrong guy, and you gotta take a deep breath and really watch him grow, and that's what I'm excited most about him."
Proctor's success in 2026 will be a key indicator for the team this season. If the rookie and the rest of the offensive line group can hold up, there's a chance that Malik Willis and co. will surpass expectations. If Proctor struggles, things could get ugly quickly in South Florida.

BOSTON (AP) — Adley Rutschman hit his first homer as a member of the Red Sox, Ranger Suarez picked up his first win since late June and Boston beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 9-4 on Tuesday night.
Mickey Gasper also homered for Boston and added an RBI single in the seventh as the Red Sox followed up their 16 hits in an 11-1 rout Monday night in the series opener with 13 more hits Tuesday. Eight players had at least one hit for Boston, which has won three of its last four games.
Gabriel Moreno hit a grand slam in the third for Arizona, extending his hitting streak to a career-best 12 games. The Diamondbacks have lost three straight and five of seven.
Arizona was without All-Star second-baseman Ketel Marte for the second straight night. Manager Torey Lovullo said before the game that he had been told Marte traveled to Phoenix for tests on his left knee after being a no-show for the series opener without much of an explanation. The club has placed Marte on the restricted list.
Rutschman had a two-run single in Boston's three-run first and added a solo homer that tied the game at 4 in the fourth. It was Rutschman's ninth homer of the season and first since the Red Sox acquired him in a trade-deadline deal with Baltimore earlier this month.

Former UFC ***** le challenger Anthony Smith entered a not guilty plea to multiple felony charges.
"Lionheart" was arrested in July in Nebraska following an incident with his wife. ?Smith is accused of terrostic threats, two counts of false imprisonment and attempt of a class 1/1A/1B/1C/1D felony. He's been ordered to appear in court for a status hearing on Sept. 21. He's currently out on $45,000 bail.
Days after the arrest, the Sarpy County District Attorney's Office released a statement detailing the accusations against Smith.
"It is alleged that on July 26, 2026, the defendant was involved in an altercation with his wife at a bar in Gretna, Neb., during which he reportedly threatened to kill her if she did not get into his vehicle and go home with him," the statement read. "He is further accused of grabbing and pushing her inside the vehicle.
"At one point, during the drive, she was able to exit the vehicle. The defendant allegedly continued making threats, demanding that she get back inside the vehicle. After arriving home, she again exited the vehicle. Investigators allege that the defendant attempted multiple times to use the vehicle to strike her. The defendant's wife was able to get out of the way and avoid any physical harm."

While Jets running back Breece Hall exited practice early on Monday, it doesn't sound like he suffered a significant injury.
Head coach Aaron Glenn told reporters in his press conference that Hall suffered a strained groin.
"I don't think it was a big deal, but I want to make sure I get the evaluation on that," Glenn said, via SNY. "The one good thing about our players, they're honest with their injuries. And if they can go, they can go. But we will try to be precautionary with a lot of those, to make sure that we do the right things."
Glenn added Hall will undergo imaging tests to ensure the Jets have the right answers on his injury.
Hall played in New York's first preseason game against Tampa Bay, registering four carries for 16 yards.

UFC 333's headlining fights are set with a long-awaited matchup between Alexander Volkanovski and Movsar Evloev, and Petr Yan and Merab Dvalishvili settling the score in a trilogy bout.
The UFC officially announced the fights during Saturday's UFC 330 broadcast, with Volkanovski's featherweight ***** le defense against Evloev being marked as the main event for the Oct. 24 event at Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi. Volkanovski (28-4) seeks the second successful defense of his second reign, while Evloev finally gets his championship opportunity after going 20-0 in his pro career.
Yan (20-5) delivered arguably the best performance of 2025 when he defeated Merab Dvalishvili at UFC 323 to reclaim the bantamweight ***** le, snap Dvalishvili's 14-fight win streak, and avenge a loss from their first meeting in 2023. "No Mercy" has now won four straight fights following a career-worst three-fight skid and looks to put the stamp on his rivalry with Dvalishvili.
For Dvalishvili (21-5), he is coming off of a well-deserved layoff after successfully defending his belt three times in 2025 before Yan foiled his attempt to become the first UFC fighter to record four successful defenses in a calendar year. Prior to that loss, Dvalishvili's seven-year unbeaten streak included victories over Yan, Jose Aldo, Sean O'Malley, Henry Cejudo, Umar Nurmagomedov, and Cory Sandhagen, among others.
All four headlining fighters hold spots in the MMA Fighting Pound-for-Pound Rankings, with Yan at 3, Volkanovski at 5 (tied with Tom Aspinall and Ilia Topuria), Dvalishvili at 8 (tied with Sean Strickland) and Evloev at 19.

TORONTO (AP) — Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge played catch and ran in New York on Friday as he continues working toward a return from a broken right rib.
"Just part of the ramp-up to baseball activity," manager Aaron Boone said of Judge before Saturday's game against the Blue Jays in Toronto. "Hopefully he'll continue to progress through this week. We'll see what else gets introduced."
Judge hasn't played since May 31, but the three-time AL MVP and eight-time All-Star has said he intends to return this season. He was cleared to begin light workout activity on Aug. 5.
Boone spoke to Judge and said the slugger responded well to throwing for the first time in his rehab. However, Boone didn't know when Judge might be ready to rejoin the Yankees.
"We expect him back, but we're in the early stages of baseball activity," Boone said. "Hopefully things continue to go well."
