The Braves and Nationals are both in the top three in runs scored this month, so it looks to be a shootout, but that was said the last time these two pitchers faced off and that was not the case. Baseball can be funny sometimes. Here is to hoping the Braves' offense can shake off their underwhelming performance against the Mets and start this series off with a bang.

Tuesday (July 28) was a big day in the NFL, as the final 26 teams reported to training camp.
That means, as quickly as anyone can say camp has begun, the Arizona Cardinals have concluded the extra week of work they had because of their presence in the Pro Football Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio, on Thursday, Aug. 6 against the Carolina Panthers.
Like the Cardinals, the Panthers also had their veterans report on July 22.
All coaches are big into planning, but Cardinals defensive coordinator Nick Rallis might be at the top of the list in looking ahead. So it was that he was asked last Friday what he was accomplishing with the extra week that he might not have been able to without the additional practice time.
"It's so funny," he said. "Like, I'm kind of mapping out installs for the future and it's like, dang, this is an extra week. What would I be doing if I didn't have this extra week? Because I'm like, 'Oh man, I got to get this in somewhere.' But I would say the biggest thing with that extra week is you can spread out installing the scheme, which allows you to just take your time a little bit more during the install meetings and really be on the details with the players.

Well this is a peculiar first move for trade deadline season. Jake Rogers, the longest tenured Detroit Tigers player, has been designated for ***** ignment. Eduardo Valencia was recalled on Sunday and will be taking over the backup catcher duties. Rogers' roster spot will go to Javier Báez, who returns from a three-month absence after suffering a high ankle sprain at the end of April.
The 31-year-old Rogers made his major league debut with the Tigers back on July 30, 2019 after coming to the Tigers in the trade that sent Justin Verlander to the Houston Astros in August of 2017. He finally became the Tigers primary catcher in 2021 before tearing his UCL and requiring reconstruction surgery that cost him all of the 2022 season. In 2023 and 2024 Rogers put together good seasons based around his defensive ability, plate discipline, and the occasional burst of home run power. He was worth 4.7 fWAR across those two years, but since that point his offensive contributions collapsed as Dillon Dingler took over the everyday catching role. This season, Rogers' defense finally showed real signs of cracking as well. He's hitting .161/.266/.301 for a 60 wRC+ which ranks him 48th out of 59 catchers with 100 plate appearances or more this season.
Despite his struggles, two part-time White Sox catchers, and numerous others, are even worse offensive players than Rogers. It won't be a surprise if he gets claimed, but it's too bad no one would flip a lottery ticket prospect to acquire him. The problem is that Rogers defensive numbers have declined this year and he's finally grading out a little below average as a defender. Whether that's partly the result of lack of playing time is hard to say, but hopefully he'll be claimed somewhere. If he clears waivers and is outrighted the Tigers will still be on the hook for the rest of his $3.05M salary for 2026.
Valencia is far and away a better hitter than Rogers, so that should provide a little support to the offense. On the other hand, Valencia isn't that good behind the plate, particularly in terms of holding opponents' running game in check. Still with Rogers defensive numbers in decline, perhaps Valencia won't do worse.
Getting Báez back could be pretty helpful to the Tigers although it's just funny to look at Báez as a way to trim strikeouts in the lineup by taking over some of the workload from James Outman. It will be interesting to see how he's deployed. With Kerry Carpenter out with a foot injury, the outfield needs help. It needed help anyway. We'll see if Báez is back to full speed and can get back to playing a solid enough center field. If he's back to 100 percent, that also gives the Tigers options, with Báez getting some time at shortstop and around the infield to get another right-handed bat into the lineup. Either way, it's good to have Javy Báez back, and hopefully further support for the outfield isn't too far away as Max Clark will be available to be called up without spoiling his 2027 rookie eligibi

Jason Alexander has issued an apology to Courtney Stodden after she accused him of acting inappropriately toward her in a 2012 Funny or Die sketch when she was just a teenager.
The sketch featured Alexander — who was 52 at the time — rubbing his phone on 17-year-old Stodden's ***** and joking that once she turned 18, he would "have his way" with her.
In an Instagram post Monday, Stodden shared a picture from the skit and wrote: "I was 17 years old in this photo. The older I get, the more impossible this is to understand. During this comedy sketch, Jason Alexander repeatedly rubbed his phone across my ***** while saying there was 'no signal' in my head but 'plenty of signal' in my chest."
"Looking back now, I don't see comedy. I see a 17-year-old girl whose body became part of an adult joke," continued Stodden, who is now 31. "People still say, 'You chose to be there.' Indiana Fever superstar guard Caitlin Clark picked up her seventh technical foul of the season on Wednesday night, putting her one technical foul away from a one-game suspension.
At least this latest technical foul was pretty funny.
She and Connecticut Sun guard Saniya Rivers both picked up techs for trash-talking at each other during the Fever blowout victory in Indy, with intrepid lip-readers catching what Clark said to get her technical foul.
"Look at the scoreboard," Clark seemed to tell Rivers during the lopsided game. That's apparently what got Clark the foul; something high school cheering sections chant at opposing teams across the country.
The refs should have just dropped both technical fouls and let Clark and Rivers do their talking and move on, but that's not what happened. Now, Clark is a tech away from sitting out for a game.

The Oklahoma Sooners took to the podium for the 2026 edition of SEC Media Days in Tampa, Florida on Monday. Joining head coach Brent Venables to represent OU were redshirt senior quarterback John Mateer, redshirt junior defensive lineman Taylor Wein, and redshirt sophomore offensive lineman Eddy Pierre-Louis.
While Mateer was at media days last year, it was the first time at the event for both Wein and Pierre-Louis. Naturally, both players were asked about their starting quarterback, and both gushed about what Mateer means to the program.
Wein has been going against Mateer in practice for the past couple of seasons, watching from the other side of the ball as Mateer leads the unit. It's been a period of rebuild for the offense after the 2024 disaster, but Wein believes in Mateer and in his ability.
"A very excellent quarterback," Wein said. "He plays very, very consistent. I know that he's very, very self-motivated, just like a lot of the guys on the team, and he does a good job just attacking his weaknesses. I've seen John completely elevate his game and completely transform as a player and his mentality, and it's only elevated the whole offense, and it's brought a huge pulse to the offense, and we're excited. We know John has a very good mindset and he's competitive, and it's actually really funny going against him at practice every day, he's the number one dude talking smack. We're going back and forth and whatnot. It's a really good thing. So, we're excited."
Pierre-Louis will now start alongside Mateer on the offensive side of the ball, and he will work to protect the star quarterback and help lead an offensive resurgence. Growing up in Tampa, Pierre-Louis was a fan of the Sooners, watching from hundreds of miles away during the Baker Mayfield era in Norman. Jul. 15—Few people brought as much joy and happiness to those around him as did Noah Boler-Kyle.
"Whenever he walked in a room his smile would instantly light it up," former Decatur Heritage basketball coach and Noah's adopted father Tommy Kyle said. "He made everyone happy."
That sentiment seems to be held by everyone who knew him.
"He was always bigger than the room," said Jason Marshall, Noah's basketball coach at Decatur Heritage. "He was so charismatic, so funny and just treated people so well. People were drawn to him and he was always smiling."
Tragically, that smile was taken away over the weekend when Boler-Kyle died after suffering respiratory arrest due to a severe asthma attack. The former Decatur Daily basketball Player of the Year was 25 years old.

Philadelphia Phillies slugger and former Middletown High School standout Kyle Schwarber appeared on "Pat McAfee Show" ahead of Schwarber taking part in the 2026 MLB Home Run Derby, and talked about how the derby reminds him of growing up as a Reds fan and pretending he was Reds Hall of Famer and former Moeller High School standout Ken Griffey Jr.
"I grew up in Cincinnati (as a) Reds fan," Schwarber said. "Griffey, hat backwards. Like growing up playing tee ball. I've got a wood bat. There's a picture of me. It's funny. … I've got my hat backwards, wood bat. And I'm trying to hit the Griffey tilt. And that was just another cool moment of just thinking about the Home Run Derby. We always played that growing up in the backyard. We had an above-ground pool. And then we had a short fence in left (field)."
Schwarber's Phillies teammate, Bryce Harper, also is participating. Schwarber was with the Chicago Cubs when he finished as the runner-up to Harper in the 2018 derby.
Schwarber has hit 28 home runs against the Reds, more than he's homered against any opponent.
When Schwarber homered July 7 off of Reds starter Andrew Abbott in the third inning of the Reds' 4-1 loss in their series opener, Schwarber did something he hadn't done previously against Cincinnati and has rarely done throughout his MLB career: homering on a 3-0 count.

Philadelphia Phillies slugger and former Middletown High School standout Kyle Schwarber appeared on "Pat McAfee Show" ahead of Schwarber taking part in the 2026 MLB Home Run Derby, and talked about how the derby reminds him of growing up as a Reds fan and pretending he was Reds Hall of Famer and former Moeller High School standout Ken Griffey Jr.
"I grew up in Cincinnati (as a) Reds fan," Schwarber said. "Griffey, hat backwards. Like growing up playing tee ball. I've got a wood bat. There's a picture of me. It's funny. … I've got my hat backwards, wood bat. And I'm trying to hit the Griffey tilt. And that was just another cool moment of just thinking about the Home Run Derby. We always played that growing up in the backyard. We had an above-ground pool. And then we had a short fence in left (field)."
Schwarber's Phillies teammate, Bryce Harper, also is participating. Schwarber was with the Chicago Cubs when he finished as the runner-up to Harper in the 2018 derby.
Schwarber has hit 28 home runs against the Reds, more than he's homered against any opponent.
When Schwarber homered July 7 off of Reds starter Andrew Abbott in the third inning of the Reds' 4-1 loss in their series opener, Schwarber did something he hadn't done previously against Cincinnati and has rarely done throughout his MLB career: homering on a 3-0 count.

Terrence Hill Jr. delivered the biggest sequence of his college career in the Men's NCAA Tournament for VCU, then spent less than a month deciding his encore belonged with Tennessee basketball.
Hill, a 6-foot-3 guard, committed to Tennessee on April 19, choosing the Vols over Kansas. He's now positioned to compete for one of the starting guard jobs on a Tennessee roster that lost All-SEC guard Ja'Kobi Gillespie to the NBA draft.
Hill said he'd already pictured himself in Tennessee's offense before making his visit to Knoxville, watching Gillespie's ascent under coach Rick Barnes from afar.
"It was funny because last year I was watching the tournament when Tennessee played," Hill said July 13. "I think it was the Sweet 16 game. I was like, 'Ja'Kobi's going crazy, that could be me out there.' I was talking to my agent about it."
Barnes saw that same potential when he made the commitment official.

Lucas Glover stands alone at the top of the ISCO Championship leaderboard after shooting a two-day total of 13-under on Thursday and Friday at Hurstbourne Country Club.
Glover has yet to make a bogey through 36 holes for a second consecutive week. He previously tied for third place at the John Deere Classic in Sylvis, Illinois.
The ISCO Championship cut line for the field was set at 3-under, qualifying 68 golfers for Round 3 of the tournament, which is set to begin at 9:10 a.m. today. Chan Kim and Steven Fisk each have a share of second place behind Glover, having shot 11-under heading into the weekend.
The winner of the tournament will receive $720,000, 300 FedEx Cup points and a two-year PGA Tour exemption. Defending champion William Mouw, who was in the same group as Glover, shot 7-under on the second day, moving up from 45th to a share of fifth place with a two-day score of 9-under. He attributed part of his success to putting his putter in hot water the night before.
"I told my caddie I was going to do it and put it in some boiling hot water. Funny enough, it just stayed hot all day and I'm going to do it tonight too," Mouw said. "Whatever works, because I was not making any putts and today I made four or five that fell in, which is nice for a hot putter."

Ultimate Fighting Championship star ConorMcGregor has chimed in on the struggles former opponentDustinPoirier is facing, but not like most may have expected.

During a Thursday appearance on Smash Cast withhosts Chael Sonnenand Ian Parker, McGregor appeared to discuss a litany of subject.In the show, he discusses topics like how he feels competing backat welterweight, whether he will ever meet FloydMayweather in the boxing ring again and his former opponents.Notably, the subject of Poirier came up, a man McGregor faced threetimes and ended up losing the trilogy match to in 2021.

Poirier, now retired, has been open with his struggles keepinghimself focused and on task now that he is no longer training toprepare for mutual unarmed combat. In an oft-discussed video, Poirier was filmed heavily intoxicated atthe Hartsfield-Jackson Airport in Atlanta in late June and arrestedfor the misdemeanor of public drunkenness.
Sonnen asked McGregor directly about Poirier's incident during theshow. Before responding, the Irishman sharply inhaled and collectedhis thoughts.

"Karma is a mirror," McGregor expressed. "It's not good to see. IfI was to say something to him, I would say: take this with absoluteseriousness. Do not engage with people. 'Oh,' there's people [thatwould say], 'it was funny, I like him more,' and you see [them]start laughing about it and maybe you wonder, 'maybe it wasn't sobad. Maybe I'll keep going.' And then the next one's worse, andthen you slip deeper and deeper."

It would not be McGregor if he did not slip in a barb or two, as hejabbed Poirier for his post-retirement appearance and admission that he can now recover properly by takingperformance-enhancing drugs.

"So, I would say, take this with the absolute seriousness," heremarked. "Funny enough, I spoke with [UFC broadcaster] MeganOlivi, they asked me—not on this, it hadn't happened yet. But theywere asking me about Dustin and I'd say, 'For him to retire and goon steroids for no reason, I found that stupid. And then also, hisbody didn't look any different…alarm belts went off in my [head],and I thought [he should] take [his transgressions] with absoluteseriousness. Because, you don't want to slip further and further.He obviously has to take accountability; I've seen something thatcame out [where he] blames his father. You have to [take]accountability [as] a man, that's it."

"Notorious" finished, saying, "It's not my business. And for thesake of his family and children, and his new child born, I hope hecomes right."
