Sept 14 (Reuters) - Hollywood designer Bob Mackie, known for making stars such as Cher and ‌Elton John sparkle, died on Monday at ‌87, according to a post on his official Instagram account.
His career spanned five decades and included designing a Barbie doll clothes collection.
Born in 1939 into a middle-class family in Monterey Park, California, he was nominated for ‌more than 30 ⁠Emmys, winning nine. He received Academy Award nominations for costumes worn in ⁠the films "Lady Sings the Blues," "Funny Lady," and "Pennies From Heaven."
"His genius and extraordinary designs will live on forever, continuing to bring beauty into this world," his ‌team said in an Instagram post. His cause of death was not stated.
Mackie was known for sequins, rhinestones and glitter, but also humor. The highlight of his 11-year run for The Carol ‌Burnett Show was the "curtain dress" worn by Burnett in a sketch parodying 1939 film classic "Gone with the Wind." ‌The costume, now in the collection of the Smithsonian's American History Museum, included a brass curtain rod balanced on Burnett's shoulders and a bit ‌of valance worn as a hat.

NEW YORK (AP) — Bob Mackie, the fashion designer whose visually provocative Hollywood style defined glamour for the 1970s — including putting Carol Burnett in some of her kookiest getups and Cher in her raciest ones — died Monday. He was 87.
"He lived his 87 years to the fullest, fulfilling his dream of being a Fashion and Costume Designer, which is all he ever wanted to do," a read statement on his social media accounts. "His genius and extraordinary designs will live on forever, continuing to bring beauty into this world."
Dubbed the "Designer to the Stars," Mackie won nine Emmy Awards, a Tony Award and was nominated for three Oscars, including one for Barbra Streisand's "Funny Lady," in which she wore a sheer batwing gown. He was inducted into the Academy of Television Arts & Science's Hall of Fame in 2002.
He designed gowns for Madonna, Barbra Streisand, Sharon Stone, Diana Ross and Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and concert costumes for Pink. When Marilyn Monroe delivered a breathy, seductive take on "Happy Birthday" at a fundraiser for President John F. Kennedy and the Democratic National Committee, she did it in a sheer, beaded gown that Mackie dreamed up in a sketch.
His influence can be seen in the styles of Kendall Jenner and Bella Hadid. His archival pieces are worn today by the likes of Anya Taylor-Joy, Miley Cyrus and Zendaya, the latter who wore a Mackie gown to honor Cher at the 2024 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony. When Taylor Swift wanted to look like a showgirl on the cover of her 2025 album "The Life of a Showgirl," she turned to some Mackie originals.

Tomlin trolled Cleveland after the team's rotten season debut against the Jacksonville Jaguars, quoting a former Steelers player to sum up the franchise's misfortunes.
"In the words of my friend JuJu Smith-Schuster, the Browns is the Browns," Tomlin quipped during a Sunday NBC Sports segment.
Okay, that's pretty funny. Tomlin's first season on the sideline has gone extraordinarily well so far, and moments like this will only increase the odds he stays in NFL broadcasting for the long haul.

Dolly Parton's sister Stella has shared new details about the late singer's long-lasting relationship with her famously private husband, Carl Dean.
The Queen of Country died August 25 at age 80 after a "brief battle with cancer." She was preceded in death by her husband, who died in March 2025 at age 82.

NEW LONDON - This time, it wasn't like when he left Bloomfield for New Britain in 2001, or when he first went back home to New London in 2005.
Back then, anyone who played, coached, covered, reffed, regulated or followed Connecticut high school football in the slightest degree knew the name Jack Cochran.
It was arguably the biggest in the game and certainly the most polarizing. The volatile coach who had won a combined eight state championships with Bloomfield, New Britain and his alma mater New London, and routed many an overmatched opponent along the way, had a peerless resume for winning games and a reputation for controversial conduct. No matter what you thought about him, an introduction was not necessary.
But it's funny what can happen to even the most household of names, even in their hometown, if they stay on the shelf long enough.
Aside from a brief return in 2013 at Harding in Bridgeport, Jack Cochran was out of high school football for 17 years.

Stephen A. Smith is calling out former ESPN colleagues Cari Champion and Jemele Hill over how their nearly three-hour "Flagrant and Funny" interview was handled after being recorded. Smith's response comes amid his ongoing dispute with critics over his treatment of Black women.
Yahoo Sports reported that Smith addressed the interview on his "Straight Shooter with Stephen A." podcast, saying he believed the full conversation would be released unedited. Instead, the two-part episode totaled about two hours and 38 minutes.
Smith said he wants the complete interview made public, wants the YouTube comment section reopened, and wants a copy of the footage so he can post it on his own channel if he chooses.
He also objected to Champion questioning whether his appearance had benefited the show. Smith claimed "Flagrant and Funny" had roughly 9,000 YouTube subscribers before his appearance and gained more than 30,000 afterward, while videos from the interview drew hundreds of thousands of views.

It's kind of funny that once Manny Machado's 25th homer of the season landed in the seats in the fourth inning, we could have just fast-forwarded to the end of the game. That big fly made the score 5-1, that's where this game ended, and while the Yankees missed a few chances to add to their lead, but the bullpen completely iced out the Padres, and this series is knotted up at a game apiece.
I was a little bit worried about Carlos Rodón's start, as the southpaw struggled with his control in the first inning. He put two Padres aboard, one via a single and one a walk before working his way out of the jam, albeit throwing 26 pitches to do it. Then, the Yankees rewarded him with an offensive surge over the next two innings, and he delivered shutdown frames in the home half of the second and the third, exactly what you look for from a good starter.
Manny Machado tagged him for a solo shot in the fourth, the only earned run Carlos allowed on the day, and the control problems blossomed again in the fifth. 16 pitches, and a big two-out walk issued to Fernando Tatís Jr. ended up pushing Rodón past where the Yankees wanted him to be, and Aaron Boone went to the bullpen to start the sixth.
This is kinda what I mean when I talk about Carlos Rodón. Five innings, two hits, and one run allowed is not a bad start. The 7:3 K:BB ratio is fine, not great, but when the runners don't come around to score you can't really get mad at anything. But like tonight, and a frighteningly disproportionate number of his starts, it feels like he left an inning, a couple more outs, something on the table. I can't say he pitched poorly, but he could have pitched better, despite surrendering just the one run.

During the podcast, Smith was discussing helping Champion, who worked on First Take from 2012 to 2015, early in her career in sports journalism. Champion pushed back on some of this, claiming Smith did not even want her on the show and that she was underused.
During this exchange, Smith claimed Champion had reached out to him after Molly Qerim resigned from First Take in 2025. Smith claimed Champion wanted to make her way back into ESPN.

One of my favorite pop culture topics to keep up with is Pete Davidson and Colin Jost's Staten Island Ferry. Despite all the jokes about the ferry, the comedians do have plans for the boat, and they're about to hold an event on it. However, putting the jokes back into the equation, it's not shocking to me at all that Davidson gave a funny statement about the upcoming ferry gig.

Last week, Jonathan ******* inga - the former No. 7 overall pick by the Golden State Warriors - ended his first stint in unrestricted free agency by agreeing to a two-year, $12 million deal with the Minnesota Timberwolves. The deal includes a player option on the second season, allowing ******* inga to reenter free agency if he chooses.
Almost immediately, ******* inga and his agent, Aaron Turner, were criticized for the deal. After all, it was only one year ago when the Warriors reportedly discussed offering ******* inga two different three-year deals - one worth $75 million with a team option on the third year and the other worth $54 million without an option. Turner and ******* inga held firm against their interest in those deals, with Turner doing a media tour saying ******* inga needed to receive a player option to be satisfied.
That dragged all the way to the start of training camp last summer and held up all of Golden State's other moves in the process until, two days into camp, ******* inga finally signed a two-year, $48.5 million deal with a team option. After a promising start to the 2025-26 season, ******* inga ultimately fell out of the Dubs rotation entirely and was traded to the Hawks for Kristaps Porzingis at the trade deadline. (That also led to all the behind-the-scenes drama from his Bay Area stint.)
Kuminga had his moments in Atlanta, including in an upset playoff win over the Knicks, but the Hawks declined his team option and sent him to the unrestricted free agency that he and Turner were so thirsty to get to. Turner had even set the stakes rather clearly in an interview with the San Francisco Standard after ******* inga's Warriors deal last October.
"This is what's funny to me. Everybody's like, 'Aaron f-ked up.' I'm like, hold on. Did I fumble something?" Turner told the Standard. "Because fumbling would mean like next year, if JK is making $10 million a year, you could say I fumbled by not taking [three years for $75 million]. ANYWAY, Cara Conseugra has a new Golden Eagle on her Marquette women's basketball roster for 2026-27, as MU announced the signing of Amina Traore at 10am Central time on Monday, the first day of classes for fall semester.
Traore is a 6'2" center from Paris, and yes, I mean the one in France, not the one in Kenosha County.

Christine Ferea wants Cris Cyborg in BKFC – and it sounds like David Feldman does as well.
With her BKFC 92 win at Fenway Park on Saturday, Ferea moved to 12-1 in bareknuckle boxing – and immediately called for a heightened challenge in the free agent and one of the best to ever do it.
The callout got a response from Cyborg, who said she's never retired, regardless of how PFL framed her Aug. 22 win over Ketlen Vieira.
It also attracted the attention of Conor McGregor, according to Feldman. The two shared their enthusiasm in trying to make it happen.
"I wasn't but I think it's something we definitely can do," Feldman told MMA Junkie on Monday. "I think it's something we can float out there. It's funny because Conor messaged me early in the morning on Sunday and he was like, 'Who'd she call out? Cris, Cris, Cris Cyborg? Oh, that's a great fight. Let's do that one, Dave. Let's do that.' He was excited about it and I'm excited about it.

The internet has a funny way of making a very big world feel tiny. Breckie Hill and Alix Earle are a pretty good example. Years before millions of people were following their lives online, both creators were students at the University of Miami. Now, according to Hill, they have somehow ended up under the same roof.

"It's honestly so random," the 23-year-old said in a statement sent to The Blast. "Alix and I were at UMiami at the same time, and now we live in the same building. It's funny how that worked out."
At Miami, Earle was studying business, while Hill had an entirely different future in mind. "I was going to be a doctor," she recently told Adam22 during an August 20 appearance on "No Jumper," adding that internet fame "never crossed my mind."
Fame found her anyway. A few unexpectedly viral TikToks eventually became a full-time career, with Hill building an audience of millions across social media. Not that the influencer necessarily sees it that way. "I use the term famous lightly," she said. "I don't think I'm famous."

Liverpool are about to wrap up one of the biggest deals of the window, with Bradley Barcola set to complete a £123m move to Anfield. A medical is booked, a five-year contract is ready, and the France forward is expected to arrive as the club's marquee attacking signing of the summer.
There is a practical detail that already looks settled too. Barcola is expected to take the No 29 shirt, not the No 11 vacated by Mohamed Salah. That choice is personal, fixed, and by his own admission, non-negotiable.
Several squad numbers are available, including 13, 16, 17, 24, 26 and 27, though Barcola's preference has been clear for some time. In a previous interview, he explained exactly why No 29 matters to him: "It's actually a funny story.
