LOS ANGELES (AP) — Ceddane Rafaela's go-ahead two-run homer highlighted a five-run seventh inning and the Boston Red Sox rallied after blowing an early lead to beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 9-4 on Friday night in the series opener.
The Red Sox led 3-0 in the third before the Dodgers scored a run in the fourth and three more in the fifth on Shohei Ohtani's two-run, two-out blast to take a 4-3 lead.
Ohtani was 2 for 5 with two runs and two RBIs a night after sitting out because of lingering soreness in his left knee that has kept the two-way superstar off the mound since July 3.
Dodgers reliever Cole Irvin (0-1) gave up a leadoff walk to Nick Sogard in the fifth. Rafaela followed with a 405-foot shot to left that put the Red Sox back in front, 5-4.

SummerSlam has something to offer for every WWE fan. From the two dream matches, one of which will be the main event each night, to the matches with crazy stipulations to some longtime feuds coming to a potential end.
As a way to preview the second biggest PLE of the year, I have put together a list of the five matches I am most excited for.
5. Gunther vs. Nick Aldis
WWE has been teasing SmackDown GM Nick Aldis' in-ring return for some time now after his mini-feuds with Drew McIntyre and Randy Orton, and are now finally cashing in, giving Aldis a tall task against the 'Ring General' Gunther. I am excited for this match for one main reason. Nick Aldis has been a professional wrestler for over 20 years. He started in the UK, before moving over to TNA and NWA where he held world championships in both. He has flourished in his GM role, but seeing him back in the ring, and for many fans seeing him in the ring for the first time, will do much more for him than continuing as GM would. For one, the WWE is putting him back in the ring at SummerSlam, which tells me they trust him. Also, having him feud with Gunther, in a rivalry that has been very entertaining, especially seeing Aldis absolutely lose it and be 'forced' to get back in the ring, gives him breathing room. Even if he loses the match, which he should and probably will because Gunther needs this win, he can certainly 'win' the WWE Universe over by putting up a stellar and exciting performance. I can't wait to see how Aldis does.

LOS ANGELES — Minutes after getting hit in the helmet by a 95 mph fastball in the second inning Friday, Red Sox first baseman Willson Contreras left the game.
Contreras took a Will Klein pitch to the head with one out in the inning, then ran the bases and scored but did not come back out for defense in the bottom of the frame. The Red Sox shifted Nick Sogard from second base to first base to replace Contreras and inserted Anthony Seigler at second.
According to the Red Sox, Contreras departed for "precautionary reasons."
Klein, pitching with two men on base, brushed Contreras back with a high inside fastball at 95.3 mph to start the at-bat. The disrespect for the reigning Super Bowl LX champions Seattle Seahawks continues to grow. At this point, the growth is a daily feature. I'm talking specifically about the disrespect leveled at the Seahawks by the popular Madden video game franchise.
In the latest edition of the game, Madden 27, the team at EA Sports have been releasing their top 10 rankings for various positions, units and even teams. Seattle's elite defense was mightily disrespected earlier in the week, as Madden 27 had them as only the 10th best unit in the game. Out of the position rankings (defensive tackle, edge, linebacker, cornerback and safety) only one Seahawk - Devon Witherspoon - cracked the top 10 in any of those lists. Players like Leonard Williams, Byron Murphy II, Ernest Jones IV, Julian Love and Nick Emmanwori were nowhere to be seen.
Now, the disrespect continues to an equally insulting degree. On Friday, Madden 27 released their top 10 rankings for teams overall. Yes, Seattle did make the cut... but only barely. According to Madden 27, the Seahawks are only the 10th best team in the game. As for those ahead of them, well, just take a look for yourselves.
The Seahawks obliterated the 49ers in the Divisional Round, outlasted the Rams in the NFCCG (one missed field goal from going 3-0 against them last year) and humiliated the Patriots in Super Bowl LX.

Aside from the three teams I have listed in the tweet above (all with good reasons I laid out, of course) the other two insulting placements come in the form of the Detroit Lions and the Baltimore Ravens. The No. 3 and No. 4 ranked teams, really? Detroit finished 9-8 last season and weren't particularly good at anything, at least when compared to the Seahawks of course. As for the Ravens, they were 8-9 and missed the playoffs like the Lions did as well. I know Baltimore had injuries they dealt with, but they always have injuries! Not to mention they will be rolling with a first year head coach in 2026.

Out of the position rankings (defensive tackle, edge, linebacker, cornerback and safety) only one Seahawk - Devon Witherspoon - cracked the top 10 in any of those lists. Players like Leonard Williams, Byron Murphy II, Ernest Jones IV, Julian Love and Nick Emmanwori were nowhere to be seen.
Now, the disrespect continues to an equally insulting degree. On Friday, Madden 27 released their top 10 rankings for teams overall. Yes, Seattle did make the cut... but only barely. According to Madden 27, the Seahawks are only the 10th best team in the game. As for those ahead of them, well, just take a look for yourselves.
The Seahawks obliterated the 49ers in the Divisional Round, outlasted the Rams in the NFCCG (one missed field goal from going 3-0 against them last year) and humiliated the Patriots in Super Bowl LX.

Aside from the three teams I have listed in the tweet above (all with good reasons I laid out, of course) the other two insulting placements come in the form of the Detroit Lions and the Baltimore Ravens. The No. 3 and No. 4 ranked teams, really? Detroit finished 9-8 last season and weren't particularly good at anything, at least when compared to the Seahawks of course. As for the Ravens, they were 8-9 and missed the playoffs like the Lions did as well. I know Baltimore had injuries they dealt with, but they always have injuries! Not to mention they will be rolling with a first year head coach in 2026.

The first day of padded practice for the San Francisco 49ers also included the team's first fight of training camp.
The dustup was initiated when Fred Warner and tight end Jake Tonges got into a heated shoving match after a play according to ESPN's Nick Wagoner. However, it was linebacker Dre Greenlaw and running back Christian McCaffrey who ignited the fuse for a scuffle.
Greenlaw, per the SF Standard's Lombardi, shoved McCaffrey to the ground after the veteran RB caught a pass. That led to McCaffrey throwing the ball at Greenlaw and shoving him back. While things were heated between the two veterans, nothing escalated beyond that shoving.
A few plays later it was Warner and Tonges mixing it up to with Colton McKivitz and Dre Greenlaw catalyzing a kerfuffle that eventually involved the entire roster, per Wagoner.
Typically these types of fights happen well into camp when players have spent several days in the heat hitting their own teammates during their on-field workouts. That the 49ers are already getting into it on the first day with pads on is a sign that their intensity level may be ratcheted up a little higher than normal.

At Keller High School in Texas, Griffiths excelled in the triple-jump.
It is little wonder Tre' Griffiths is a three-tool wideout for the University of Hawaii football team. After the first two practices of training camp, 6-foot-3, 205-pound Griffiths has shown speed, hops on 50-50 **** , and Hoy-Hoy grip.
"I'm loving it here," said Griffiths, who transferred from Oklahoma State in January. "Coach (Jared) Ursua and Coach (William) Overstreet have done a really good job getting me acclimated and adjusted to the program. I've been loving it so far."
Griffiths is helping to fill a void in the Warriors' four-receiver offense. Wideouts Jackson Harris and Brandon White transferred, and Karsyn Pupunu's petition for an extra season was denied. Margin Hooks, who is Griffiths' personal trainer, called Ursua. Hooks, a former BYU receiver, and the UH receivers coach are close friends.

It's been a big week for the New Orleans Saints at the start of their 2026 training camp. Between Taysom Hill saying thank you to New Orleans as he considers his next step, Bryan Bresee suffering a potentially season-ending knee injury, and Chris Olave agreeing to terms on a $132 million contract extension, there's been a lot to keep up with. And Drew Brees is going into the Pro Football Hall of Fame next week, too. But right now we're focusing on Olave's new contract. Thanks to some reporting from NewOrleans.Football's Nick Underhill on the structure of the deal, we can estimate just how much it'll cost the Saints against the salary cap.
Olave was set to play on his fully-guaranteed fifth-year option of $15.493 million, but that money appears to have been spread out as part of the deal. Underhill reports that Olave's base salary is now $1.29 million, a little more than the veteran's minimum, and a steep drop from that $15.493 million figure. Combine that with the proration from his $35 million signing bonus and you've got a 2026 salary cap hit of about $8.29 million. That saves the Saints $7.2 million against this year's cap, putting them under the spending limit by more than $13.5 million. They can use that extra money to sign a veteran to replace Bresee, upgrade another position group, or just churn the depth chart and cover in-season moves.

Everyone was talking about the training camp scuffle from Day 1 of camp for the Cincinnati Bengals. Some people were concerned that Zac Taylor was letting too much go.
In reality, it was just players going out and competing against one another to get better.
Ja'Marr Chase talked to the media after Day 2 of camp. When asked if he liked seeing that type of fire from the defensive back,
"A lot of competitiveness going on, and getting each other better. That's what I want, exactly what I want. I never seen JD like that. It's new. I like it. I think it makes them guys practice a little harder," he said.
The JD he was referring to is expected nickel corner starter Jalen Davis. It isn't surprising that a former undrafted free agent who has had to scratch and claw his way on the practice squad and roster would be out there with a bit of a chip on his shoulder. Davis mixed it up with Chase, but also with Mike Gesicki during day one of training camp.

The Washington Commanders opened training camp on Wednesday, and by all reports, the defense has the early advantage over the offense. That's not a surprise. It's how things usually go this time of the year, especially when each side is installing a new scheme.
After an uneven start on Day 1 of training camp, quarterback Jayden Daniels was better on Thursday. Far too often on Wednesday, Daniels held onto the ball for a split second too long. While no contact is allowed right now, Daniels would've been sacked multiple times if it were a game.
Again, much of this is expected right now. It's nothing to be alarmed about. But there is something that should concern Commanders' fans. Check out this X post from Nicki Jhabvala of The Athletic.
Obviously, Jhabvala is posting a GIF of Stefon Diggs, indicating that her takeaway from two days of camp is that the Commanders need the free-agent wideout.

MANHATTAN — Folks, it really was a great year in sports, even for those of us who aren't regularly paying attention: The underdog New York Knicks won the NBA Finals, Shohei Ohtani defied baseball physics, and the Olympics introduced the masses to our new national treasure, Alysa Liu.
I spent a soggy, smoky night celebrating it all with some of the tallest and most talented people in the country at the 2026 ESPY Awards, hosted by comedian Marcello Hernández at Lincoln Center.
As someone who observes sports more from a cultural angle than a technical one, I admit I find most of the fun of televised competition to be the emotion and drama of it all (besides the whole "who's going to win" element). I also only learned that "ESPY" stands for "Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly" last night. I still had an amazing time.
Here's what I observed as an in-person attendee at the ESPYs that you might not have picked up during the televised broadcast on ESPN.
When I arrived at the theater for the red carpet, the air was heavy with wildfire smoke and the humidity of an impending deluge. Sure enough, it poured. The nasty summer storm cost everyone about an hour of interview time, but fortunately, I got to spend that time indoors chatting with Yahoo's correspondent for the night: Jazzy, a delightfully brilliant 16-year-old journalist. We spent a while fantasizing about the snacks we wished we had brought, and she recommended I try putting Flamin' Hot Cheetos in the freezer for 15 minutes, which I will be doing next time I anticipate being grumpy and impatient.

With just three games left before the Aug. 3 MLB trade deadline, the latest Cincinnati Reds trade-chip watch also comes with an eye on 2027.
That's because team president Nick Krall made it clear during the recent road trip that the Reds with newly-extended ace Chase Burns have designs on retooling for next season rather than rebuild again for some undetermined future window.
"You've got to make the best deal you can," Krall said. "With that said, your goal is to come back next year and be in a good spot to make a playoff run."
That's where Burns and rookie Rhett Lowder come in – even where All-Star Hunter Greene might go out.
Lowder, the No. 7 overall pick out of Wake Forest in 2023 the year before Burns was the Reds' No. 2 overall pick out of the same school, pitched six innings for the first time since April and allowed just two runs against the Pittsburgh Pirates in the July 30 opener of a four-game series won 3-2 by the Reds in the ninth.

Lowder, the No. 7 overall pick out of Wake Forest in 2023 the year before Burns was the Reds' No. 2 overall pick out of the same school, pitched six innings for the first time since April and allowed just two runs against the Pittsburgh Pirates in the July 30 opener of a four-game series won 3-2 by the Reds in the ninth.

The Federal Reserve's interest rate cuts have eased the funding costs, and loan growth is picking up again across the Southeast and Mid-South regions. First Horizon Corporation (NYSE:FHN), the Memphis-based lender, which benefits directly from this regional banking recovery, just got a very public nudge from Jim Cramer – the Mad Money host. In the lightning round on July 27, Jim endorsed First Horizon, calling it "a terrific stock, very inexpensive".
