Sep. 14—PULLMAN — Shortly after Washington State wrapped up its last game, a blowout road loss to Kansas State over the weekend to drop coach Kirby Moore's team to 0-2 to open the season, Cougar quarterback Caden Pinnick was short on words.
On some of the team's biggest problems on offense, Pinnick said only, "We just lost. Next question."
On what was holding back WSU's passing offense, which produced only 65 yards, Pinnick said, "Good team. We lost."
On whether he felt like offensive coordinator Matt Miller's playcalls were putting the team in the best positions to succeed, Pinnick said, "It's not for me to say. We just gotta get better."
On Monday, Pinnick led off his news conference addressing that postgame session, which lasted less than two minutes, saying it was "not quite the response that you want."

The 20th-ranked Iowa Hawkeyes roll into Week 3 after claiming the Cy-Hawk Trophy with a 16-13 win over Iowa State from Kinnick Stadium in Iowa City.

Hits were at a premium with both sides combining for seven, and the Dodgers made the most of theirs, out-homering the Reds two-to-one and relying on Tarik Skubal's best performance as a Dodger to secure a 4-1 win. While Reds starter Nick Lodolo was responsible for all four runs in his seven innings, it doesn't necessarily reflect just how effectively he held down this potent Dodgers lineup for large periods of the game—especially dealing with such an ungrateful task.
It didn't take more than a couple of hitters to find out, or at least get a glimpse of the type of performance Skubal was about to bring to the mound. Facing Cincinnati's most dangerous hitter, Elly De La Cruz, Skubal was down 3-0 in the count following two bad misses, remembering that De La Cruz took him deep last week. The Dodgers' starter not only got back in the count and punched out De La Cruz, but almost as impressively, he did so in a manner of simply imposing his will that few starting pitchers can even hope to accomplish. Skubal threw three straight heaters, none of them particularly dotted, two up and one down, almost as if indicating that today he'd do as he pleased and the Reds were mere spectators to it.
That initial at-bat against De La Cruz was also indicative of the approach that Skubal would carry into this game. Whether due to a lack of feel for a particular off-speed pitch or, more likely, from an adjustment after seeing the Reds' swings against the four-seamer, Skubal went to that pitch far more often than he normally does—throwing it 44 percent of the time across seven scoreless innings, needing just 90 pitches to do so.
The first and only time the Reds managed to put multiple players on base against Skubal came in the fifth inning, when Juan Brito singled, and J.J. Bleday walked, later moving to second and third on a wild pitch. In a nine-pitch at-bat, Hector Rodríguez would go down on a four-seam fastball, this one up and well outside the zone. In fact, each of Skubal's first seven punchouts came on heaters.
Offensively, the Dodgers made the most of their rare hits count, securing just three in seven innings against a dialed-in Nick Lodolo. As All-NBA center Jalen Duren and the Detroit Pistons inch closer to the October 1 deadline, there are reportedly no signs of the two reaching an agreement. Duren and the Pistons remain at a stalemate amid negotiations on a potential contract extension ahead of the 2026-27 season.
The Sacramento Kings' reported interest in acquiring Duren was mentioned in addition to the All-Star center's frustration. The entire contract negotiating process over his future with the Pistons isn't sitting well with Duren, according to ESPN NBA Today's Marc Spears.
"Scott Perry ain't playing around; neither is BJ Armstrong," Spears said. "Scott Perry has a relationship with Jalen Duren dating back to when he was trying to get the Knicks to draft him, which they did. But they traded him to the Pistons. The Seattle Seahawks are 1-0, so it's time to start scouting their next opponent.
The Arizona Cardinals shocked the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 1 with a 26-14 win in which Mike LaFleur became the franchise's first non-interim head coach to win their first game in charge. The matchup was projected as one of the opening week's most lopsided in favor of Jim Harbaugh and Los Angeles, who were coming off an 11-6 record in 2025. Los Angeles made the playoffs and lost to the eventual AFC champion New England Patriots in the Wild Card round, albeit without either of their starting offensive tackles—Rashawn Slater and Joe Alt—who were both expected to boost the offense upon their return this season. Arizona's defense had other ideas, and became one of the biggest surprises of any unit across Week 1's Sunday slate, while their offense simply looked more talented and outplayed LA with complementary football. That's what the Seahawks will be looking for in Week 2.
The Cardinals defense played with an energy that stifled Justin Herbert and new offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel, who only held the ball for 51 plays and 22:29. Arizona ran 21 more plays and had the ball for 15:02 more of the game (more than an entire quarter?!) When watching this game, the attitude from Arizona's defense seemed to disregard the stature of its opponent. LaFleur retained defensive coordinator Nick Rallis, who Phoenix-based sports radio host John Gambadoro credits for helping set the temperature.
It's easy to see Rallis' results. The intensity of the defense that showed up on tape is just as evident on paper. His Cardinals defense ranks second to last in blitz rate so far this season, yet they held McDaniel and Herbert to a measly 2-for-8 on third downs and 0-for-3 on fourth downs. Their front seven was far more formidable than the Chargers on the day, producing 17 pressures on 55 snaps while LA could only muster 12 on 75 opportunities. On the flipside, the Cardinals' offensive line has been projected as their downfall this season. The Seahawks have a clear opportunity to establish their presence as a physically dominant team if they kill the Cardinals momentum. This will be the game for elite run blockers like AJ Barner and run stoppers like Uchenna Nwosu to put the new age film community on watch.
Offensive talent is far from the problem in Arizona. Trey McBride is the best tight end in football. They've got two running backs in Jeremiyah Love and Tyler Allgeier who can both be a problem for any team. Marvin Harrison Jr. was a matchup nightmare against the Seahawks last season. In Week 3, he had one of the best battles against Devon Witherspoon and Riq Woolen of any wide receiver all year. When partnered with a seasoned veteran quarterback with a quick release, they were able to make life easy on their OL. Cincinnati Reds manager Terry Francona's future is drawing attention as the front office looks ahead to next season. Francona has one guaranteed year left on his original three-year contract, plus a club option for 2028. Team president Nick Krall said he doesn't think it is a lame-duck status for someone like Francona. Francona said he values the people around him and feels stronger about them after being there for a while. He said the Reds would be hard pressed to find a better fit for what they are trying to do. Francona earned his 2,103rd managerial win when the Reds beat the Brewers 4-3 on Sunday, Sept. 13.

Wide receiver Hollywood Brown was active for Sunday's game, but the veteran never got on the field during the Eagles' 24-22 win over the Commanders.
DeVonta Smith and Dontayvion Wicks started for the Eagles with first-round pick Makai Lemon and Darius Cooper also seeing time on offense. At a Monday press conference, head coach Nick Sirianni was asked about how Brown fits into the team's plans.
"So, with yesterday, you know, we have our rotations that we're doing, you know, Hollywood could obviously help us," Sirianni said, via Brooks Kubena of TheAthletic.com. "We obviously want to get him into the football game because his speed is real. It just didn't work out that way yesterday. There are games like that. There are games where you get shut out on catches. Unfortunately, there are games, they get shut out on reps. But we know that Hollywood can help us win football games, and his speed is real, and, quite frankly, just from my end, we want to get him into the football game, right? And so, you know, we'll make a better effort to do that next time, 'cause I know the playmaking ability that he can bring with his speed. But was pleased with how the wideouts played as a whole. Of course, there were things that you want back. They made a lot of plays down the field — and with different things with their job description. But, you know, I do want to see him in that football game and getting reps and contributing to this football team."
The Eagles' offense looked like a work in progress for considerable portions of Sunday's game, which was their first with offensive coordinator Sean Mannion. Quarterback Jalen Hurts engineered enough big plays to overcome the rough spots and we'll see if Brown fits into the Week 2 plan to create more of them.

Michigan State beat Eastern Michigan 35-7 on Saturday, but the Spartans went into halftime leading only 14-7 after giving up a 13-play, 78-yard touchdown drive to the Eagles in the second quarter. Pat Fitzgerald did not hide his frustration with it afterward, as he mentioned in a Michigan State Spartans press conference video.
"We've got to be better fundamentally in the second quarter. We weren't doing a great job of block destruction, we weren't fitting gaps right," Fitzgerald said. "The play they scored on we practiced. You know, there was a lot of not very happy people on our defensive headphones and defensive staff when we went in at halftime. Should have never happened."
The run defense is mostly to blame for the touchdown drive. Of the Eagles' 78 yards, 67 came on the ground. The touchdown came when Noah Kim faked the handoff to his running back and took it in himself from four yards out without being touched by a defender.
"I thought, you know, Nick (Sheridan) and Joe (Rossi) and LeVar (Woods) were right on at halftime," Fitzgerald said. "By the time I even got up in the locker room after doing a couple interviews on the field, they had already had the things that I expected I was going to say."

"We've got to be better fundamentally in the second quarter. We weren't doing a great job of block destruction, we weren't fitting gaps right," Fitzgerald said. "The play they scored on we practiced. You know, there was a lot of not very happy people on our defensive headphones and defensive staff when we went in at halftime. Should have never happened."
The run defense is mostly to blame for the touchdown drive. Of the Eagles' 78 yards, 67 came on the ground. The touchdown came when Noah Kim faked the handoff to his running back and took it in himself from four yards out without being touched by a defender.
"I thought, you know, Nick (Sheridan) and Joe (Rossi) and LeVar (Woods) were right on at halftime," Fitzgerald said. "By the time I even got up in the locker room after doing a couple interviews on the field, they had already had the things that I expected I was going to say."

Austria's national team head coach Ralf Rangnick announced his squad for the upcoming international matches this Monday afternoon - and our young goalkeeper Christian Zawieschitzky can celebrate his very first call-up to the senior national team! According to the coach, the plan is for our keeper to join the senior squad next week for at least the first two matches of the extended international break, before potentially switching to the U21 team for the European Championship qualifiers afterward.
It's certainly something you dream about as a small child. I used to attend open Austria training sessions just to watch, since it was in my neighborhood, and I even took photos with players like David Alaba. I never imagined things would move this fast and that I'd suddenly be there as a player myself, but I'm very grateful to have this opportunity.The call-up actually comes as a surprise to me. I thought that if I were to be included anywhere, it would likely be the U21s - which I would have thought was great, too. I didn't expect to be part of the senior national team right away. Sure, the Sixers have some shiny new players in Jaylen Brown and LeBron James, but all of this still comes down to the health of Joel Embiid. The big fella is still a dominant player when he can get on the floor as evidenced by his 26.9 points, 7.7 rebounds, and 3.9 ***** ists he averaged in 38 games in the 2025-26 season. Embiid being able to return early from an appendectomy completely changed that Round 1 series with Boston when the Sixers rallied from a 3-1 deficit. He averaged 28.0 points, 9.0 rebounds, and 7.0 ***** ists in Round 1 against the Celtics as he spurred the rally for Philadelphia.
When Embiid is right, there aren't many players in the league who can slow him down. He has lost a step defensively as a result of the injuries and surgeries he's had to undergo has robbed him of a lot of speed and athleticism, but Embiid is so smart and able to find new ways to be effective on defense. He is still one of the top players in the game and should be treated as such. If he's right and healthy, the Sixers take an even bigger leap forward.
The Sixers will rely on third-year big man Adem Bona as they did in the 2025-26 season. He averaged 4.8 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 1.2 blocks as he was able to establish himself in coach Nick Nurse's rotation. He will have competition, though, as the Sixers did add bouncy Ariel Hukporti early in free agency. Also, in his third season, Hukporti will look to find an opportunity in Philadelphia.

By the time Lincoln Financial Field's clock struck 0:00 late Sunday afternoon and the Eagles had survived a 24-22 Week 1 win over the Washington Commanders, a palpable sense of relief could be felt by the fanbase.
For the sixth straight time under Nick Sirianni and Jalen Hurts, the Eagles won their opening game. It is the longest active streak in the NFL and it is always better to start 1-0 than 0-1.

The Iowa Hawkeyes flipped the script on the Cyclones, winning this year's CyHawk game on a late field goal to pull out a 16-13 win. It was a scrappy, ugly, sometimes dirty game that was pretty much in line to how this series has gone these last ten years. But the Hawkeyes exorcised the demons of the last two years with a Caden Burr field goal from 42 yards out with :15 seconds left to bring the CyHawk trophy back home to Iowa City.
After last week's performance against NIU and with a brand new regime in Ames, many expected this to be a much more comfortable game for the Hawkeyes, especially under the lights in Kinnick Stadium with a raucous crowd. But Iowa State put Iowa into an early 10-0 hole midway through the second quarter that had the black and gold faithful starting to get that "here we go again" familiar feeling. But the offense managed to come to life, thanks to a massive 56-yard bomb to Tony Diaz that set up a Hank Brown touchdown run late the first half. A huge 45-yard Buhr field goal right before halftime reset the score and setting up a grinding second half of football.
Neither team had a great first quarter. Iowa started with the ball but procedural penalties doomed their drive. Meanwhile the Hawkeye defense held the Cyclones to only six plays in the quarter. Iowa State managed to move the chains in the second quarter with drives of nine and ten plays that ended on a Kyle Konrardy field goal and 7-yard Jalen Raynor touchdown pass, respectively. Raynor's stat line tonight won't impress anyone: 10/19 for 117 yards, and no touchdowns with some crucial misfires on potential big plays. But aside from those misses he made no back breaking mistakes that allowed the Iowa defense to capitalize.

Iowa's offense went in to hibernation as they could not get Kamari Moulton going on the ground, the Cyclones were clearly committed to stopping the run and it worked for much of the game. Iowa's first three drives of the second half went for only 21 yards (four plays), 8 yards (3 plays), and -5 yards (3 playes, not helped by a holding penalty on Dotzler). Woof.

It's the eve of the Washington Commanders' season opener, so they have made a roster move.
It's not unusual for the Commanders, or the other 31 NFL teams, to make a roster move or two the day before a game. As the season progresses, you will notice these are often injury-related, where the Commanders will elevate a player from the practice squad to the active roster to fill in for an injured player who is going to be inactive on game day.
In this case, the Commanders just released offensive tackle D.J. Humphries on Friday. Thus, Washington announced Saturday it is elevating C/G Julian Good-Jones (JGJ) from the practice squad for Sunday's 2026 opener against the Philadelphia Eagles.

JGJ was perhaps the most talked-about backup during training camp and the preseason in the DMV. Smith is expected to handle lead-guard responsibilities for Real Madrid, giving him an opportunity to play a much larger role for the EuroLeague club where Luka Doncic developed before entering the NBA. A lineup missing its leading threat mustered five hits in a 3-2 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday, undermining a determined start by right-hander Peter Lambert and ensuring a series loss to the American League's first playoff entrant at Tropicana Field.
The Astros, who entered with the fifth-fewest runs in the majors since the Aug. 3 trade deadline, scored three or fewer for the 21st time in 35 games in that stretch. The offensive downturn might be presenting a direr threat to their playoff hopes if not for an inept division. The loss left Houston with a 2 ½-game AL West lead over the Rangers, who entered the day four games under .500, pending Texas' result.

Sep. 12—The Washington State offense couldn't get out of its own way and the Cougar defense was ultimately powerless to slow Kansas State's march as the Wildcats rolled to a 34-7 nonconference football victory Saturday at Bill Snyder Family Stadium in Manhattan, Kan.
After going 0-for-11 on third down during the Apple Cup, the Cougars' opening script was encouraging.
Quarterback Caden Pinnick rocketed the rock to junior wide receiver Branden Ganashamoorthy and sophomore running back Maxwell Woods for a pair of first downs on WSU's opening drive, but it would be for naught as Cougar kicker Jack Stevens missed his third field goal of the season — matching the total number of misses from last year.
K-State completely snuffed out the Cougs after that, forcing a turnover on downs, nine punts and a forced fumble over the remainder of the game.
The lone bright spot for Wazzu on Saturday were the heroics of WSU safety Jaylen Thomas, who registered the first two interceptions of his college career.

At the end of Stage 1, the NASCAR O'Reilly Auto Parts Series field filed down pit road for standard pit stops, but things quickly went very wrong.
On the narrow pit road, there was a check-up that led to Rajah Caruth and Nick Sanchez spinning. It was an accordion effect as cars piled in, pushing each other into the wreck.
Caruth's car clipped crew members of Brent Crews' No. 19 Joe Gibbs Racing, who also narrowly avoided being crushed by Sanchez's out-of-control car. It was a truly frightening moment that could have resulted in severe injuries, but thankfully, everyone was okay.
That was such a close call for Bryan Backus on the rear of the No. 19.
