Mad Max rolled right past the Big Train on Major League Baseball's all-time strikeout list.
Scherzer recorded his 3,516th career strikeout Saturday, Aug. 8, punching out former teammate and Philadelphia Phillies slugger Kyle Schwarber to move into 10th place all-time.
Scherzer, 42, was making just his ninth start this season thanks to a pair of stints on the injured list. He has recorded one 300-strikeout season, in 2018 with Washington, eight 200-strikeout seasons and twice has led the major leagues in strikeouts over his 19-year career.
Johnson, who debuted as a 19-year-old in 1907, won 417 games over a 21-year career and still leads all major leaguers with 110 career shutouts.

It was a crisp evening in Provo, Utah, when Jason Beck's and Jay Hill's units met for the first time.
On Oct. 18, 2025, BYU (featuring Hill as defensive coordinator) held Utah (featuring Beck as offensive coordinator) to the second-lowest output of the season for 2025's No. 4 scoring offense (featuring 41.2 points a game).
Despite the victory for the Cougars over the Utes (led by now-Michigan football coach Kyle Whittingham), Hill came way with a strong impression of Beck's offense.
ON THE MEND: Michigan defensive stars John Henry Daley, Rod Moore on a 'pitch count'
"Extremely creative," Hill, U-M's new defensive coordinator said Wednesday, Aug. 5, in Ann Arbor. "They do a good job of finding mismatches and trying to get you out leveraged in different ways. When you think they're going to run it, they throw it. When you think they're going to throw it, they run it. It's just it keeps you on your toes.

Atlanta Falcons superstar running back Bijan Robinson is the most important player on the team. It's no wonder the team paid him as such.
Robinson agreed to the biggest deal for an NFL running back in league history on Tuesday, with ESPN's Adam Schefter reporting the details of a 3-year, $75 million contract with $51 million guaranteed and $37 million due up front.
Robinson had been holding in to get a new deal, and now, he'll be on contract through the 2030 with a Falcons team that desperately needs him to be elite as it sorts through uncertainty at the quarterback position.
Was this too rich a deal? Was it just right, considering the gravity Robinson holds on the Falcons offense?
Let's grade Robinson's blockbuster deal and ******* s what it means for the Falcons going ahead.

ATLANTA (AP) — The Atlanta Braves moved to bolster their rotation only hours after placing right-hander Reynaldo López on the 15-day injured list by acquiring right-hander Tyler Mahle from the San Francisco Giants on Sunday night.
Mahle, 31, was 3-9 with a 5.14 ERA in 18 games with the Giants this season. The Braves sent right-hander Anthony Molina to the Giants. The Giants optioned Molina to Triple-A Sacramento.
Braves general manager Alex Anthopoulos said he was interested that Mahle was 2-1 with a 2.82 ERA in four starts in July.
"We actually talked with him as a free agent when he signed with the Rangers (before the 2024 season)," Anthopoulos said in a conference call following the trade. "He's had good success in the past."
For his 10-year career, Mahle is 42-55 with a 4.19 ERA.

Just minutes after the Dodgers dropped their second game in a row against the Boston Red Sox, they struck gold with a blockbuster deal that will define this year's trade deadline. In a move that was widely expected to come to fruition, the Dodgers got their big catch of the deadline as they struck gold by acquiring Tarik Skubal from the Detroit Tigers.
The Dodgers did not have to move that much prospect capital, as the return haul to Detroit includes outfielder Zyhir Hope, and pitchers River Ryan and Brady Smith. With the Dodgers once again signifying their dominance in the trade market, here are some reactions to the Dodgers acquiring Skubal.
Mike Petriello of MLB.com writes about how the Dodgers deal for Skubal could go down as the greatest deadline deal for an ace that we've ever seen, comparing the deal to the Brewers acquiring Hall of Fame pitcher C.C. Sabathia in 2008.
We're talking pitchers as legendary and accomplished as Johnson, Scherzer, Sabathia and Verlander; we're talking about some great seasons from solid hurlers like Jeff Samardzija, Luis Castillo, Yu Darvish and Bartolo Colon; we're talking about the rare post-1986 Big June Trade in Freddy Garcia; we're talking about the best season of Sidney Ponson's career, and that one only barely.
The Dodgers' deal for Skubal now fortifies arguably the best rotation in baseball, with Sonja Chen of MLB.com noting that the team now boasts a starting staff of at least five potential aces.

Tennis fans miss Carlos Alcaraz. On Wednesday, we were treated to a video of him hitting forehands with that healing wrist. That got fans extremely excited for his expected return to the Cincinnati Open in a couple of weeks.
On Thursday, Alcaraz debuted a new hairstyle. This is a big departure from his previous noteworthy ones including the buzz cut, and the platinum blonde dye job affectionately called "blondecaraz." It also is a noticeable change from his recent fluffy long-locked look at the FIFA World Cup Final. The long hair was clearly part of a well orchestrated hair plan that now makes perfect sense.

Barclays Women's Super League fixtures for the 2026-27 season have finally been released.
The schedule is always published later than many supporters would like because a number of clubs share stadiums with men's teams. The league therefore has to wait until the fixture lists for the top five tiers of the men's game have been finalised before confirming dates.
It should be a slightly less congested campaign for ***** nal than last season. The club are not involved in the FIFA Women's Champions Cup, avoiding a trip to Miami, while there is no Subway Players' Cup either, as clubs competing in the UEFA Women's Champions League are exempt on player welfare grounds.
The previous format, which awarded Champions League clubs a bye to the quarter-finals, provided a significant advantage. The fact that only ***** nal, Chelsea and Manchester City have ever won the competition suggests that format may not have helped competitive balance. With none of those three clubs involved this season, a new name will be added to the trophy.

The Kentucky football team is entering a new era in 2026 under coach Will Stein. We're going through the offensive positions, and ranking all 16 teams in the SEC at each position.
As we continue our position group previews of each SEC team and where Kentucky lands amongst their foes, we turn our attention to the offensive line. At all levels of football, but especially the SEC, you have to be strong in the trenches to compete against the top of this conference. Will Stein knows this, which is why he invested a lot of resources to overhaul this offensive line. Kentucky spent big up front to give 27-year-old offensive line coach Cutter Leftwich the talent to revive the big blue wall.
Ryan Silverfield has a ton to overcome in his first season as the Razorbacks head coach, and the offensive line could be the detriment of this offense. He brought Malachi Breland over from Memphis to be his starting left guard, and Bryant Williams the Louisiana transfer to be the starting right tackle. This is an inexperienced group across the board that will have a large task at hand, facing a brutal schedule with multiple game wreckers on the defensive line.
Jeff Lebby brought in a couple of SEC transfers to start at each guard spot, including Arkansas transfer LJ Prudhomme and LSU transfer DJ Chester. Jakheem Shumpert-Perkins and Blake Steen are expected to man the tackle spots. The Bulldogs offense have the firepower to be an explosive offense, but the offensive line will determine their overall ceiling as an offense in 2026.
Auburn's entire starting offensive line this season will be from the transfer portal, a theme of Alex Golesh is bringing guys with him from South Florida to help create continuity. Center Cole Best and right guard Cole Skinner follow Golesh over from the Bulls, and I am hesitant on being confident this plan will work out with the amount of USF players being brought in offensively. Michigan State transfer Stanton Ramil will be the left tackle, and James Madison transfer Jo Simmons will be the right tackle.

Bam Adebayo said he has no hard feelings toward LeBron James' surprising decision to sign with the Philadelphia 76ers this offseason. However, the Miami Heat star let James know he'll be coming for him the next time they meet on the NBA court.
Speaking at a community event in Miami on Tuesday, Adebayo revealed his text to James after the latter spurned the Heat for the Sixers, which feels like friendly banter for these two stars, given they've built a friendship in the past few years.
"There ain't no disappointment. To me, you should always be happy for a person and their decision. He made a decision where he feels like it's his best situation to win. And I feel like I'm a good friend of LeBron's," Adebayo told the Miami Herald.

Welcome to SB Nation Reacts, a survey of fans across MLB. Throughout the year we ask questions of the most plugged-in Orioles fans and fans across the country. Sign up here to participate in the weekly emailed surveys.
During the recent Orioles press conference about the Kyle Bradish contract extension, principal owner David Rubenstein said of his president of baseball operations Mike Elias that "we couldn't be more pleased" regarding the job that he has done.
Taking that at face value, the question has been answered, Elias will remain the boss of the Orioles front office no matter what happens with the remainder of the season. There are plenty of examples across the sports landscape of why not to take those kinds of proclamations at face value. The "dreaded vote of confidence" is its own recognized part of the manager/GM hot seat. Almost ****** ody ever directly says, "Things need to improve or we're going to fire this guy." They just say nice things when asked and fire the person when they want to fire them.
In this week's survey question, I want to know what you think is going to happen. Is Elias going to be around for next year, or not? Vote in the poll here:
I have thought for a while that if the Orioles do not make the postseason this year, then Elias should be gone at the end of the season. Let someone else figure this thing out, because his answers aren't getting the Orioles where they need to be.

The Cincinnati Bengals open training camp July 29, and they won't waste any time in the personnel evaluation process.
With the Bengals' first preseason contest fast-approaching Aug. 13, and the regular season opener close behind on Sept. 13 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the process of culling the camp roster down to 53 players and a practice squad will begin immediately.
At stake is a 2026 campaign in which Cincinnati has desires of reestablishing itself as a playoff and AFC North contender after missing the postseason the last three years and bottoming out last year via a 6-11 record.
The Bengals' draft class has been praised, as was the trade acquisition of interior defensive lineman Dexter Lawrence. There were notable free-agents brought in to buoy the defensive side of the ball, and Cincinnati kept its entire starting offensive line together. Some think it's the best line of the Joe Burrow era (although that's not a high bar to clear).
Should Burrow end up injured for any period of time, the Bengals also retained Joe Flacco as a backup quarterback following his highly productive stint under center during Burrow's absence last season.

Our new home jersey for the 2026/27 season is here – and there's more physics behind it than you might initially think. The inspiration: the Doppler effect, coined by the Salzburg physicist Christian Doppler. Formula 1 driver Isack Hadjar of Red Bull Racing demonstrates how this principle manifests itself in practice in a video featuring his car.
The dynamic elements on the front of our new kit capture the movement of sound waves – the pitch changes you hear, for example, when a Formula 1 car passes by. Our Red Bulls will give the kit its debut this weekend in their cup tie in Oberwart.
You can get your jersey now at our Bullshop and in our official online fan shop!

Speaking exclusively to Get French Football News, former France, ***** nal and Chelsea defender William Gallas remains of the view that William Saliba's performances for France are not at the same level as those for ***** nal.
Last time we spoke you said that William Saliba hadn't yet shown his ***** nal form for France. Has the World Cup changed your view on that? And how do you think ***** nal will cope without him?
His performance was not the same as he played for ***** nal.
He had a good performance. But what I've seen – and I know exactly because I was in that situation – if you remember during the World Cup, Saliba played on the left side.
And normally with ***** nal, he plays on the right side. So when he plays with ***** nal, you can see he has that confidence, because he knows that position very well, you know, right-footed, the movement looks like it's very simple and easy. When he plays on the left side, it's different because he has to be more focused because when he receives the ball, normally the ball has to be on his left foot, but because he's on the right foot, he has to control the ball differently.

When C.J. Stroud's historic rookie season was wrapping up, imagining the Houston Texans quickly becoming a Super Bowl contender wasn't a stretch.
The Texans doing it in spite of Stroud is the surprise.
Nobody foresaw the situation the Texans find themselves in going into Stroud's fourth season. Houston has built what might be the best defense in the NFL. Edge rusher Will Anderson Jr. proved to be worth every bit of what the Texans gave up when they traded up to draft him, and Houston is physical and fast at all three levels.
Ask Josh Allen. The Texans abused Allen in a way he had never been before in his career during a 23-19 win over the Bills last season. The defense is stellar. And if Stroud had maintained or improved upon his rookie season level until now, the Texans would almost certainly be the best team in football. That hasn't happened. They weren't even the best team in the AFC South last season.

One of college football's most legendary head coaches gave much praise to Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko and his quarterback Marcel Reed in an interview with ESPN from the 2026 SEC Media Days.
Former Alabama head coach and current college football ******* yst Nick Saban said he really likes what the Aggies bring to the table this season, including the return of Reed as the signal-caller. Texas A&M achieved its first 11-0 start since 1992 and reached the College Football Playoff for the first time in Elko's second season at the helm, paving the way for a higher ceiling and much higher expectations.
According to Saban, Reed's a really good passer who has continued to get better each year. With a slew of talented and electric targets surrounding him, this could be the Nashville, Tennessee, native's chance to take his game to the next level.
It is undeniable that Saban is a believer in what Elko has built in College Station, after being ranked second in program history for best record through the first two seasons (19-7), just behind former Aggie head coach Kevin Sumlin. Texas A&M also tied a school record with 10 players selected in the 2026 NFL Draft.
Despite the loss of production, the Aggies hauled in the No. 4 transfer portal class, No. 7 recruiting class and retained guys like Reed, safety Marcus Ratcliffe and linebacker Daymion Sanford, all of which represented the Maroon and White at SEC Media Days on Wednesday.

Forward Kyogo Furuhashi has departed Birmingham City "a cult figure", believes BBC Radio WM's Richard Wilford.
The ******* an international has joined LA Galaxy after just one season at St Andrew's, in which he scored only three goals in 31 appearances.
Furuhashi arrived with high expectations, with the 31-year-old impressing during a three-and-a-half season stint at Celtic, leading some fans speculating on where it went wrong during his move to the Championship.
Among those theories was the impact of a shoulder injury he had picked up at the end of his Celtic spell, but Wilford is not so sure it played a role.
"I'm not sure, particularly the way he plays, that it [the shoulder injury] would have impeded him too much," Wilford said.

Darian Mensah could have been complimentary of his time playing at Duke, where he led the Blue Devils to an improbable ACC **** le last season.
He could have credited Manny Diaz, the Duke coaching staff and his former teammates in helping him raise his game to another level, one that made him so valuable that Miami came in and swooped him away at the last minute this past offseason.
Heck, he could have passed on any question regarding his old team, and that would have been better than what came out of the quarterback's mouth at ACC media days last week. Instead, the California native decided it was best to use his platform to blast Duke and the environment he found himself in last year in Durham.
"At Duke there was kind of some friction when I first got there because my dollar amount was released," Mensah said. "Everybody sees that, and it was just hard for me to be the new guy, and everybody said, 'Oh, you're getting paid more than me, and I've been here for X amount of years.' At Miami, the culture is different, and it just feels like family and actually feels like I'm at home."
Point taken.

Throughout its existence, the WNBA has been made up primarily of Black women players. However, that does not extend to the league's coaches, and Dallas Wings superstar Paige Bueckers thinks that's a problem.
While Black women have made up most of the players in the WNBA since the league began in 1997, that is not true of the coaches throughout the league, as the WNBA does not have a single Black woman head coach. During a recent interview, Bueckers spoke out against that.
Following Sunday's game against the Chicago Sky, Bueckers was asked about the "process" she hopes to see in terms of hiring Black women to head coaching jobs, with the WNBA not having a single Black coach throughout the league.
Bueckers, who is white, said that she would like to see "equal opportunity and no discrimination based on what you look like, who you like, and anything of that nature," when it comes to the league making hires. She added that she thinks the league was "built on" the contributions of Black women.
"I think Black women — specifically, I grew up with a lot of prominent Black women in my life that were very important to me in how I was raised and how I grew up, being my stepmom, my AAU coach," Bueckers said via ESPN. "So I understand how amazing they are and how they should get the same equal opportunity as a white woman, as a white man to be an important piece of this league.

The Atlanta Falcons are still a few months away from the 2026 NFL regular season, but the team's rookies are set to report for training camp in less than two weeks. Since the final stretch of summer before football season always seems to drag on, we've rounded up the latest news to get you through another day.
In today's Falcons Wire Recap, Tua Tagovailoa's former teammate weighs in on the team's QB competition, Brandon Dorlus gets some love from The Athletic, Chris Lindstrom is ranked among the NFL's best interior linemen, and Bleacher Report places Atlanta near the bottom of their latest power rankings.
Dolphins offensive tackle Patrick Paul, who started all 17 games at offensive tackle in 2025, was asked how he thought Tagovailoa would fare in Atlanta while appearing on "The Set" with Terron Armstead. Paul praised Tua and predicted his former teammate would win the QB competition over Penix.
"I know he's going to go in there and he's definitely going to win that spot," said Paul. "He's a great player. So I'm definitely rooting for him. I know he's going to bounce back from what was last year, and he's going to do his thing over there."
Defensive tackle Brandon Dorlus has been selected as the Falcons' breakout player for the 2026 NFL season in a new feature from The Athletic.
