Florida State head coach Mike Norvell met with local media Monday to open Alabama week after Michael Alford's firing as athletic director, discussing, among other things, three availability updates.
"First off, with the news of today, definitely wanted to start off just thanking Michael Alford and Laura, for all the work and the time that we get to spend together over these last few years," Norvell said. "Two of the best people I've had an opportunity to be around."
"Obviously, as we move forward into this week, all of our focus is going to be on this game," Norvell said. "It's a big game. It's our first road game of the season … an opportunity to go out there and be on an incredible stage against a very talented football team."
Norvell shared that freshman linebackers Izayia Williams and Daylen Green will miss the rest of the season. Veteran linebacker Blake Nichelson will miss an extended period of time but is expected back this year.
"Those guys, they had the injuries, Daylen in the last game and then Izayia (has) been dealing with some things," Norvell said. "With some guys going down, the opportunity for others to rise up, whether it's defensively there at linebacker, whether it's opportunities there in special teams, it'll be an open-door opportunity for guys on this team."

It wasn't a good Saturday afternoon for Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer and the rest of the program.
Oklahoma came into Saturday's game against Michigan as a slight favorite and ranked No. 11 in the AP poll, but it didn't matter. Michigan took a 10-0 lead into halftime before winning 17-10.

Mateer didn't have a good game for the Sooners, finishing with only 189 yards through the air, one touchdown, and one interception. He was missing throws constantly and never looked comfortable against Michigan's defense.

Bayer Leverkusen took a deserved lead into the latter stages of the first half against Bundesliga leaders Augsburg, with Christian Kofane rewarding an increasingly threatening display from the visitors.
Augsburg actually created the first opening inside the opening minute, as Robin Fellhauer's low delivery found Hennes Behrens at the far post, only for Facundo Medina to make an important block.

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers has never been shy about speaking his mind, and as he enters what he is adamant will be his final season in the NFL, Rodgers is making it clear that he's letting whatever comes to mind fly.
In a two-part interview on teammate Cam Heyward's Not Just Football with Cam Heywardpodcast, Rodgers did not mince words about his feelings toward ESPN, doubling down on his criticism of the network during the Steelers' training camp.
"ESPN is really scared," Rodgers ***** erted. "Because I can speak up and speak my mind. And that McAfee thing rattled their feathers because I didn't just say that on McAfee's show—honestly, I love Pat, and he's done more for that network than any other horrible show they have on there—they should pay those guys doing it.
"But I also said, 'you're a gutless organization,' because they haven't said anything. They spend so much time on certain issues, but you won't talk one second about the Danny Russini situation?"
Rodgers also made it clear how he feels about former President Barack Obama and the lack of impact he had on the Black community, as well as where current President Donald Trump's loyalties actually lie.

Zac Thornton entered today's game with a 2.93 ERA in 11 starts. It's been quite the surprising season for the rookie lefty, who has managed those impressive topline numbers despite boasting less than flashy stuff and underlying peripherals. Alas, those topline numbers look a little bit worse after today's game, as Thornton underwent his worst start as a major leaguer, and the Mets were not able to work themselves out of the hole he put them in, resulting in a 9-5 loss to the Giants.
San Francisco struck within minutes of the game's start, as Rafael Devers socked Thornton's fourth pitch of the afternoon over the right field wall for a one-out solo homer. The Mets answered back in the bottom of the second when A.J. Ewing—who has been struggling mightily in the second-half—socked a two-out, two-run homer off Giants starter Anthony Molina. That gave the Amazins a 2-1 lead, but unfortunately they would not hold it for long. Thornton surrendered a lead-off single in the third inning, followed by a two-run blast to Christian Koss to put the Giants back in front.
Thornton went on to retire his next eight batters, right up until Koss—who entered today's game with just one homer this season—came to the plate again in the top of the fifth, and he hit his second home run of the afternoon. Not to be outdone, Devers came up two batters later following a single and socked his second home run of the day. Thornton surrendered one hit—a double from Bryce Eldridge, the fourth straight two-out hit of the inning—before finally retiring the Giants, but it was now a 6-2 ballgame.
Meanwhile, the Mets's bats did little against Molina after Ewing's homer (that hit in fact remained the only one surrendered by the Giants through six innings). Both teams went to their bullpens in the sixth inning—albeit with Molina's final line looking a lot better than Thornton's ugly one (5 innings, 7 hits, 1 walk, 6 strikeouts, 6 runs). Chris Devenski was the first reliever up for the Mets, and he did his job by tossing two scoreless innings. The bats finally got something going in the bottom of the seventh, when two singles and a walk loaded the bases with one out. Francisco Alvarez struck out swinging for the second out, but the Mets then finally got another run on the board when Brett Baty walked to bring in a run and make it 6-3. Alas, the potential tying run was stranded, as Francisco Lindor grounded out to first to end the threat.
And the Giants quickly acted to make sure the Mets would not continue to claw their way back into the game. Jefry Yan took the mound in the top of the eighth and issued a one-out walk to Eldridge, followed by a two-run homer from Osleivis Basabe. That made it 8-3, but San Francisco still wasn't quite done. Justin Hagenman pitched the ninth, and just like every non-Devenski Mets pitcher of the day, he surrendered a homer—this one a one-out solo shot for Grant McCray. That made it six dingers for the Giants, in case you weren't keeping count.

Liverpool have named their squad for the 2026/27 Champions League league phase, and there is no point dressing it up, two senior players have been left behind. Federico Chiesa and Wataru Endo are not in Andoni Iraola's List A squad, which means they are unavailable unless changes are made later.

Talks between Olympique de Marseille and Crystal Palace for the transfer of Quinten Timber resumed on transfer deadline day. The Dutchman now looks set for a move to Selhurst Park, as per a report from RMC Sport.

Today, the Stockton Kings, the NBA G League affiliate of the Sacramento Kings, announced they have acquired the returning player rights to 2025-26 All-NBA G League First Team guard Tristen Newton and forward Teddy Allen in a three-team trade with the Delaware Blue Coats and Iowa Wolves. In the opening game of today's doubleheader, the Yankees just didn't show up. They were shutout, while the pitching and defense had some shaky moments, leading to less that stellar loss. However with another game to play, they had a chance to quickly bounce back, and — credit to them — the Yankees did that.
In his first start back off the injured list, Fried went just over 60 pitches, which ended up being 3.2 innings. He gave up one run on three hits and a walk, while striking out four. It was a perfectly good outing for someone going for the first time in a couple weeks.
However, the story in this one was more about the Yankees' offense actually putting in a good shift. In total, they ended up recording 13 hits, all of which were just singles. The difference was that they managed to actually string them together, allowing them to score nine runs for the game. Nine runs ended up being plenty, as they rebounded to split the doubleheader and pick up a 9-2 win over the Red Sox.
Despite the win, early on, it seemed like this game might follow a similar path to the first one. Immediately after the Yankees couldn't cash in with runners in scoring position in the second, the Red Sox scored. Nick Sogard led off the third inning with a homer off Fried.
However, the Yankees then immediately struck back, scoring more runs in the bottom of the third than they had in their last couple games. José Caballero led off the inning with a single, and Trent Grisham followed with a walk. Ben Rice then popped in a single to get the Yankees on the board.

Despite the win, early on, it seemed like this game might follow a similar path to the first one. Immediately after the Yankees couldn't cash in with runners in scoring position in the second, the Red Sox scored. Nick Sogard led off the third inning with a homer off Fried.
However, the Yankees then immediately struck back, scoring more runs in the bottom of the third than they had in their last couple games. José Caballero led off the inning with a single, and Trent Grisham followed with a walk. Ben Rice then popped in a single to get the Yankees on the board.

The FIBA World Cup is a very big deal in women's basketball, and it only comes around every four years, so you'd like for it to work smoothly. That is hardly the case for the event that begins on Friday in Berlin.
The timing, as it relates to the WNBA, is absurd. Here we have a nine-day tournament that finds the WNBA suddenly going dark near the end of its regular season, then resuming with only four games remaining per team.
The Valkyries' season goes on pause on Sunday (against Portland) and doesn't restart until Sept. 18. That's nearly a three-week break for the league's hottest team - all the while uncertain about their playoff opponent, with the seedings still to be determined.
They'll have four players engaged in the World Cup: Gabby Williams and Janelle Salaün (France), Cecilia Zandalasini (Italy) and Miela Sowah, a development player who has appeared in just five Valkyries games but was recently added to the Australian team.

UConn football made waves on Wednesday by revealing a new red alternate jersey. It'll be the first time any team at the school has ever worn a uniform with red as the primary color.
Reviews have been mixed online. Some people love them — the players certainly reacted positively in a video posted by the team — but those who don't have been vocal in their displeasure. That same split occurred among The UConn Blog's hierarchy with Dan Madigan supporting the new look and Daniel Connolly among the opposition.
Let's embrace debate.
Connolly: I'd rather have a team go bold and fail when designing a jersey or uniform than do something that's safe but boring. UConn absolutely went bold with red jerseys, which I can respect. I'm just not sure I like them. As someone who's been clamoring for an alternate jersey for years, I was thrilled when the team teased such on social media earlier in the week. But when I saw the reveal, I was immediately disappointed. It just doesn't look like a UConn jersey. I'm willing to reserve judgement until I see them on the field in game action, but I'm giving them a thumbs-down for now.
Madigan: When UConn teased this reveal earlier in the week, I told our blog chat with Dan and Aman Kidwai that I would love to see a red jersey, but I was convinced that this would be the light/powder blue uniform they teased last April Fool's Day. I was pretty surprised to actually see the red jersey on socials on Wednesday, but I like the look. This uniform template of the past few years is quite literally as boring as it gets — there's no piping, striping or accents anywhere — so it's a lot of red and it's certainly bold. It's definitely not a subtle way to introduce the color, but I think it will look much better in real life on the Rentschler Field grass. I still wish there was more going on with these UConn uniforms overall, but I am all for this red look, and I think it will look great if they ever pair it with navy helmets and navy pants.

The top of the Mets' lineup took another hit on Wednesday night.
Bo Bichette was removed from the team's game against the Brewers before the top of the fifth inning after sustaining a left foot contusion. The Mets third baseman fouled a pitch off the inside of his foot in the bottom of the third inning and initially remained in the game before exiting an inning later.
Bichette, who has not missed a game in 2026, was replaced in the lineup by Christopher Morel while Brett Baty moved from left field to third base.
Baty would be the logical replacement for Bichette at third base if he needs to miss time. Morel also played 74 games at the position for the Cubs in 2024.
Bichette has turned it on offensively in the second half, entering the night with a .780 OPS since the All-Star break including an .869 OPS in August. This season, Bichette is slashing .264/.312/.393 with 14 home runs, 66 RBI and 64 runs.

Bella Mir, the daughter of former multiple-time UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir, entered week 3 of Dana White's Contender Series 10 on Tuesday as a heavy favorite to win. Instead, the 23-year-old suffered her first career defeat.
Mir headlined the fight card pitted against Alex Apodaca. Apodaca's takedown defense proved effective against the NCAA champion wrestler and was able to score a unanimous decision upset.
UFC CEO Dana White has known Mir for years and even advised her about her future paths not long ago. He has a close relationship with the multi-sport athlete and weighed in on her loss during the event's post-fight press conference.
"I was extremely biased coming into tonight. I've been close to her for over four years," White said. "Four years ago, she came to me and wanted to sort of map out her future. I'm the one that talked her into going to college, you know, and waiting, you know, getting a wrestling background in college, do some great things there, and then come here and, you know …"

NEW DELHI: Yashasvi Jaiswal has broken his silence on his heated confrontation with Sri Lanka pacer Asitha Fernando, making a surprise comment on a social media video discussing their on-field spat during the opening day of the second Test in Colombo.
Jaiswal responded to a Cricbuzz video featuring cricket commentator Harsha Bhogle, ***** led 'Did Jaiswal cross the line?', urging people not to judge the incident without knowing what had been said between the two players.
"If you don't know what he said then please don't make your judgment if anyone cross the line we need to let them know this India will fight and reply," Yashasvi Jaiswal commented on the video.
The comment quickly went viral, adding another layer to an incident that had already attracted considerable attention after Jaiswal and Fernando were involved in a heated exchange immediately after the India opener was dismissed.

Star Illini defensive back Matthew Bailey has been named to the preseason watch list for the 2026 Chuck Bednarik Award, the Maxwell Football Club announced Friday.
Bailey is one of 91 players under consideration for the award, which goes to the best defensive player in college football. He is also one of 19 Big Ten players on this year's watch list.
A team captain and two-time All-Big Ten selection, Bailey enters his senior season after leading Illinois in total tackles in each of the past two years. He recorded 76 tackles in 2025 after posting a career-high 94 tackles in 2024. Last season, he also set career bests with 59 solo tackles and four tackles for loss.
Bailey earned AP All-Bowl Team honors following Illinois' Citrus Bowl victory over No. 14 South Carolina, tying an Illinois bowl record with 14 tackles. He also ranks among the conference's top tacklers, finishing 14th in the Big Ten with 6.8 tackles per game in 2024.
The Bednarik Award has been presented annually since 1994. Named for College and Pro Football Hall of Famer Chuck "Concrete Charlie" Bednarik, the award recognizes the nation's top defensive player.

Aug. 20—BRIDGEWATER, S.D. — After more than a decade competing with 11 players on the field, the Bridgewater-Emery/Ethan Seahawks are returning to familiar territory in 2026.
BEE is moving back to the nine-man ranks at the Class 9AA level, bringing with it a proud history in the smaller classification and a renewed sense of excitement surrounding the program.
The Seahawks made the jump from Class 9AA to Class 11B in 2015. The move proved to be a successful one, as Bridgewater-Emery/Ethan reached five consecutive state championship games and captured the 11B state ******* le in 2019. But after finishing 2-6 a season ago, the Seahawks are making another transition, back to where the program's success first started.
"We're just excited about the speed of the game, obviously, and you can score a few more points when you have two less players on the field," BEE head coach Jeff VanLeur said. "We are also excited to have those rivalries again in the Cornbelt Conference with those other close nine-man programs, because it is a great conference to compete in with a lot of great, local teams in it."
For longtime coach Jeff VanLeur, the move represents a return to the level where he has spent much of his career. VanLeur has coached 35 years at the nine-man level, all within the Seahawk program and its various cooperatives.

The Washington Commanders are entering the 2026 season with a chip on their shoulder. General manager Adam Peters revamped the Commanders' defense, and while he didn't surround Jayden Daniels with a ton of offensive talent, signing Stefon Diggs during training camp gave the offense a huge boost. There are still questions and unknowns about this team, but they are ready to prove to the NFL that they are for real.
Former Dallas Cowboys and current Green Bay Packers linebacker Micah Parsons was asked to rank the teams in his former division, and his answers are very much in line with most NFL ******* ysts and reporters.
After naming the Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys as numbers one and two, respectively, Parsons says, "At number three, I think this is going to be the hard one, but the Washington Commanders, they proved it. They went to the NFC Championship; they added talent. I think this team can be the real deal. I don't know if they can handle the haymakers like the Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles, but time will tell."
The New York Giants were obviously in the fourth spot in the NFC East, but Parsons is essentially saying all the same things that most ******* ysts say. The clear-cut leaders in the NFC East (as of now) appear to be the Eagles and Cowboys, in that order. Most ******* ysts and reporters have the Commanders and Giants at three and four, also in that order, although there are always a few outliers that have a different perspective.
For the Commanders, though, this is just more of the same. Someone else not truly believing in them. Someone else not taking a chance on them. O.J. Brigance valiantly endured amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease, for 19 years. On Monday, the Baltimore Ravens announced Brigance's death. He was 56 years old.

Brigance won the Grey Cup with the Baltimore Stallions in 1995 before beginning his NFL career with the Miami Dolphins in 1996. The linebacker only spent the 2000 season with the Ravens, but he made it count, winning Super Bowl ***** V.
Brigance finished his playing career with the then-St. Louis Rams and New England Patriots before retiring after the 2002 season. Upon retirement, Brigance joined the Ravens' front office. Even as a Super Bowl champion, his lasting impact on the Ravens came in the years he served in his player engagement role.
Brigance received his devastating ALS diagnosis in 2007. In 2013, having already outlived his prognosis, CBS Sunday Mornings featured Brigance and his life with ALS.

Some bonds never fade, no matter how much time passes. When Kevin Kampl suddenly walked out on stage at our season-opening event, a huge cheer erupted across the Festwiese. And 'Kevko' himself quickly realised that, in a way, he never really left.
"It's wonderful to be back. It feels like coming home," said the 35-year-old as he looked out at so many familiar faces. Kevin spent eight and a half years in an RBL shirt, making 283 competitive appearances and sharing some of the greatest moments in our club's history with the Red Bulls.
After a few months away, Kevko is now back in Leipzig. He speaks openly about a difficult period in his life, feeling refreshed again and the possibility that his next chapter could even begin back at RBL.
After leaving the club, Kevin initially took some time away and spent plenty of time with his family in Spain. After going through several difficult moments in his personal life, he needed some distance from football and the chance to switch off.
"I needed some time to slow things down a bit. It did me good to recharge and get some energy back," Kevko explained, drawing supportive applause from the fans.

Diana Taurasi's No. 3 now hangs in the rafters in Phoenix. The Phoenix Mercury retired Taurasi's jersey Sunday during halftime of their game against the Portland Fire, adding her to the franchise's Ring of Honor. The ceremony came in front of an announced sellout crowd of 16,513.
Taurasi spent her entire 20-season WNBA career with Phoenix. The Mercury selected her with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2004 WNBA Draft after she won three consecutive national championships at UConn.
As a rookie, Taurasi averaged 17.0 points in 34 games. She was named Rookie of the Year.
Phoenix won championships with Taurasi in 2007, 2009 and 2014. She was Finals MVP in 2009 and 2014 and won the league's regular-season MVP award in 2009.

Matt Olson has hit quite a few home runs this season.
But few have been as momentous as the three-run shot he crushed in the bottom of the seventh in the Braves' 5-3 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks Sunday afternoon to help Atlanta salvage one game from the weekend set.
The homer was Olson's 36th of the season, moving him into a tie for second in the majors with Yordan Alvarez, just one behind Kyle Schwarber's 37. It was also his sixth homer this month and his 15th since the start of July.
With the game knotted at 2 in the seventh, Olson smashed a 3-0 sinker 437 feet to straightaway center. This was particularly important because it seemed the Braves could come up empty in the inning which began with an Austin Riley double and a Jim Jarvis sacrifice bunt after Ronald Acuña Jr. struck out ahead of Olson for out #2 .
Dylan Lee worked a 1-2-3 eighth with two strikeouts. Raisel Iglesias allowed the first two batters of the ninth to reach but limited the damage, allowing just one run to secure his 25th save and prevent the Braves' first three-game losing streak of the second half of the season.
