The Buffalo Bills changed defensive coordinators, changed base fronts and changed the language in the meeting room this offseason. What they didn't change was the personnel in the middle of the defensive line — and that's the one place a 3-4 hybrid needs to work.
Enter Vita Vea. Tampa Bay's nose tackle cut off contract negotiations and requested a trade this week, and NFL.com put Buffalo at the top of his list of landing spots.
"The Bills would have to do some cap gymnastics to make it work, but from a scheme and need fit, he'd be the perfect solution in the middle of the defense," NFL.com wrote. "The Bills struggled up the gut last year, particularly when Ed Oliver was out. Vea would plug that hole. Putting the veteran between Oliver and promising second-year defensive tackle Deone Walker would make Jim Leonhard's defense sing."

The Buffalo Bills wasted no time in trying to fill the roster spot vacated by veteran wide receiver Jalen Virgil. With the team already losing wide receiver Tyrell Shavers to the Active/PUP list, waiving Virgil with a non-football injury (NFI) designation paved the way for the team to host several receiver prospects on Thursday, July 30.
Among those tryouts was wide receiver Dante Pettis, who ultimately signed a deal with Buffalo after Thursday's session at St. John Fisher University. Pettis, who turns 31 at the end of October, is a seven-year NFL veteran who until now spent his time exclusively in NFC.
The 6' 1", 200-pound Pettis originally entered the NFL as a second-round (44th overall) pick of the San Francisco 49ers during the 2018 NFL Draft. He made a meaningful impact as a rookie, catching 27 passes (45 attempts) for 467 yards and five touchdowns (per Pro Football Reference). Pettis was waived during his third season with the Niners, ultimately landing with the New York Giants, where he remained through the 2021 NFL season.

The Tigers picked up their first commitment in the class on Thursday when four-star quarterback Trace Hawkins announced he will continue his career at Clemson. The Calhoun, Georgia native selected the Tigers over a group of finalists that included LSU, Duke, Virginia Tech and Vanderbilt after building a strong relationship with the coaching staff throughout the recruiting process.
Landing Hawkins gives Clemson an early foundation for the class, with the talented passer becoming the first player to publicly pledge to the Tigers for 2028. Quarterback has been a priority position for the staff, and Hawkins emerged as one of the top prospects on Clemson's board after several visits to campus over the last year.
His first trip came during the 2024 season, and he made multiple return visits this spring. Hawkins attended Clemson's spring game, participated in the program's Elite Day event and later returned for Dabo Swinney's high school camp in June. Insiders are reporting, after months of speculation, that the Detroit Tigers will indeed trade Tarik Skubal in the coming days.
The Tigers are not out of the postseason race, but they are far from a lock. By keeping Skubal, they risk losing him for no return, so they could try to find a trade that keeps them competitive now, while also landing **** ets for the future. Every contender will want Skubal, who is a rental, but not every contender is being seen as a realistic landing spot.
"There will be no shortage of suitors for Skubal, with the (Los Angeles) Dodgers, (Milwaukee) Brewers and (Tampa Bay) Rays leading the pack," MLB insider Mark Feinsand wrote on Thursday. "The (Chicago) Cubs and (Atlanta) Braves will likely take their shot, too, and while the (New York) Yankees and (Philadelphia) Phillies have been mentioned as possibilities, sources believe those two clubs are long shots, as they have other holes to fill by Monday's Trade Deadline."
It's not like the Yankees and Phillies won't try to get him. However, if they're up against the Brewers, Rays and Dodgers, they won't be able to make as competitive an offer without really gutting their farm systems or big league roster.

The San Francisco Giants are trade deadline sellers, and while Rafael Devers, Matt Chapman, and others might not be likely to be dealt, there are two players who seem to be near-locks to be traded.
Robbie Ray is one, but the one player who is more likely to be traded than any other on this roster is Luis Arraez, the All-Star second baseman. After signing for $12 million on a one-year deal, Arraez is very likely to be traded this summer.
Fortunately for the Giants, according to Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon of The Athletic, the odds for landing a huge return for Arraez look strong, as there is significant interest in the All-Star this summer from almost every contender.
"Now, after both an offensive resurgence and defensive revival at second base, virtually every contender is showing interest in trading for Arraez, according to a person briefed on the Giants' discussions," Sammon and Rosenthal report.

But run the numbers on what it actually takes to pull $1,000 a month from that yield, and the reality hits differently.
Generating $1,000 a month means earning $12,000 a year from one investment. Dividing that annual target by SCHD's current 3.3% distribution yield produces a required investment of roughly $364,000, the fund's yield data confirmed.
At a share price near $33.29 as of late July 2026, that's approximately 10,900 shares, a portfolio concentration that few individual investors would find comfortable or feasible.

The North Carolina Tar Heels will enter the first year of the Michael Malone era with some big expectations.
After they were eliminated in the first round of the NCAA Tournament last season, it's now up to Malone and the staff to turn this thing around. While they have their first roster mostly put together, the future of the program is also very important in the present.
For the Tar Heels, they have yet to land a recruit in the 2027 or 2028 classes. But they do have their eyes on a bunch of targets that could really change their class.
One recruiting **** yst 'called his shot' on making a prediction for recruits and where they will land. For North Carolina, it's great news as On3's Jamie Shaw predicts the Tar Heels will land CJ Rosser and five-star forward DeMarcus Henry.
That would be huge news for the Tar Heels, landing two five-star recruits. While they would still need to add to the class, landing two five-stars right away would be a huge boost.
