Lazio are eyeing a deal to bring Croatian midfielder Marcelo Brozović back to Serie A following the expiration of his contract with Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr.
The experienced midfielder spent eight years at Inter between 2015 and 2023, making over 300 appearances for the Nerazzurri, and according to Calciomercato.it, he is open to a return to Italian football.

Albeit they've conceded five goals from their opening two Premier League matches, Xabi Alonso seems to have Chelsea back on track after a dodgy 2025/26 campaign as the Blues have opened their season with three wins on the bounce. They beat Fulham 3-2 for their Premier League opener, topped Luton Town 2-0 in the Carabao Cup, and most recently beat Brighton and Hove Albion 4-3 in the league. While the former Bayer Leverkusen and Real Madrid manager will certainly be hoping for more solidity in his defense, three straight wins is not a bad start to life in the English top flight at all.
Per statistics provided by OptaJoe, Alonso has become only the fourth manager to have his side open up the season with seven or more goals in his first two Premier League matches, and that's not even counting the scored against Luton Town in the EFL Cup. The other three managers to have done this are Bobby Robson in 1999 with Newcastle United, Michael Laudrup with Swansea City in 2012, and Marcelo Bielsa with Leeds United in 2020. Alonso joins an elite list of managers in a start that's breathed an air of reassurance after there was heavy speculation as to whether or not he made the right decision to join Chelsea in hi post-Real Madrid job search.
After his unprecedented Bundesliga ****** le campaign with Bayer Leverkusen in the 2023/24 season, Alonso was a man in HIGH demand throughout Europe and he was someone who was even on Bayern's radar at the time when it became clear they'd need to replace Thomas Tuchel. The who's who of European giants were all keen to try to line him up as their next manager, but Alonso had made the decision to stay with Leverkusen for the 2024/25 season and then ultimately wound up at Real Madrid to replace Álvaro Arbeloa.
Ironically enough, the pair of Spaniards will not be competing against one another in the Premier League as Arbeloa is currently serving as Fulham manager, though his start to life in England has not gone as swimmingly as it has for Alonso as Fulham lost their opening two league matches of the season, the first of which to Alonso's Chelsea and the second of which to Sunderland.

One of the reasons the San Francisco Giants have liked Christian Koss so much is his baseball savvy. Against one of the team's top 2026 tormentors, the Diamondbacks, Koss' baserunning helped fuel a rare win against Arizona.
Hit by a pitch in the fifth, Koss dashed from first to third on Nate Furman's sacrifice bunt, realizing third baseman Jose Fernandez hadn't retreated fast enough to the bag. That set up Drew Gilbert's sacrifice fly to take a 2-1 lead, helping starter Landen Roupp snap his five-game losing streak. The Giants are now 2-8 against the Diamondbacks this season.
Jung Hoo Lee hasn't started two games in a row because of a bruised right elbow, but he pinch hit in the eighth Thursday and drew a 10-pitch walk. He scored on Bryce Eldridge's double and rookie outfielders Jonah ****** and Turner Hill provided RBI singles that inning, while third baseman Shay Whitcomb sent ****** in with a safety-squeeze bunt.
With Willy Adames likely out for the rest of the season with an elbow injury, Koss has started 27 of the past 28 games and has a plus-2 outs above average (OAA), an advanced Statcast metric. Adames, who has played through back issues this season, had a minus-17, tied for worst in the majors.
The Giants have Marcelo Mayer, acquired from Boston at the deadline, waiting in the wings. When he's ready to come off the injured list - he expects to be out of a walking boot for a bruised foot soon - Koss is likely to shift back to third, where he has also played well.

In the 7th and final round of the group stage, Santos FC beat Mirassol 1-0 on Wednesday night (26) at Gabriel Marques da Silva Stadium in Santana de Parnaíba (SP), securing a place in the knockout stage of the state tournament. Santos' goal was scored by top scorer Ketlen.
With the win, Peixe finish the first phase with nine points, two wins, three draws, and two losses. In the Play-in, Alvinegro Praiano will face rivals São Paulo. Before that, however, coach Marcelo Frigerio's side will have a break from matches, as the Paulistão knockout stage begins on November 18 with the first leg. The match – Needing a win to seal qualification, Santos FC started the match on the front foot. Just 15 minutes in, Ketlen latched onto a great long pass from Katrine, burst into the box, and chipped it over goalkeeper Agatha, narrowly missing the crossbar.
Mirassol responded right away and had two chances, but both were denied by fine saves from Taty Amaro. The following minutes saw a tightly contested midfield battle with few opportunities for either side.

The dominance continued and, in the 20th minute, Evelin Bonifácio received the ball on the left and crossed to Ketlen's head. The top scorer in Santos FC history headed firmly into the left corner, giving goalkeeper Ingrid no chance and opening the scoring at Barradão. It was the forward's 210th goal for the club.

In addition to bringing the national department closer to the players' day-to-day routine and the work of the coaching staff and the health and performance departments, the visits are also aimed at observing training facilities and competition matches.

Roman Anthony begins a rehab **** ignment on Tuesday, but when he gets back to Boston, his friend Marcelo Mayer will not be there.
Mayer and Anthony were two-thirds of Boston's "big three" of prospects, which also included Kristian Campbell. Anthony was a star in the big leagues almost instantly and signed an extension, but Mayer did not have the same fate. He struggled as a hitter and dealt with injuries. The Red Sox decided to trade him at the deadline after adding Curtis Mead in a separate trade.
"Obviously, Marcelo hit a little different," Anthony told reporters on Tuesday, per WooSox reporter Tommy Cassell. "I came up with him and lived with him every day, and he was my roommate since we were — since I was 18, 19 years old. So, seeing him go, I was excited for him to kind of get a new opportunity and almost like a refresh and to be back close to home, I think it'll be good for him and hopefully get to see him come to Boston, that'd be pretty cool, right? But yeah, I was sad. Obviously, spoke to him, still speak to him quite a bit. So, I hope all goes well for him always."
Mayer, Campbell and Anthony were once expected to lead the Red Sox into a new era of greatness, but it looks more like it will be Anthony alone leading the way.

Both River Plate and Boca Juniors are going through one of the most difficult periods of their modern history. Massive spending, coaching carousels, and an apparent struggle to adapt to a rapidly changing football landscape have put Argentina's two biggest clubs on remarkably similar paths that are headed in the wrong direction.
The Superclásico remains one of the biggest events in world football, but the institutions behind it are struggling to live up to the extraordinary standards they established over the past two decades. River Plate and Boca Juniors continue to have enormous fanbases worldwide, some of the largest commercial operations in South American football, and the ability to spend more than most of their domestic rivals. Yet the results on the pitch increasingly fail to reflect those advantages.
That contradiction is at the heart of the current crisis. Argentina's two biggest clubs have more resources than almost any other team in the country, but neither has been able to turn those resources into a sustainable sporting project.

Former Boston Red Sox youngster Marcelo Mayer seemed to be the perfect candidate for a situation like that. Mayer, who has unfortunately dealt with some injuries throughout his young career, never really put it together up in Boston.
At the same time, this is a young kid who is truly only getting his career started. Mayer now has an opportunity with the San Francisco Giants, and he's very excited for that, mainly getting back to the West Coast.
"I'm just super excited for the opportunity that I have here," said Mayer, per The Athletic. "Obviously, being back on the West Coast, being comfortable, close to family, I'm just super excited. The guys have welcomed me with open arms. I'm excited to get going."

Adley Rutschman is playing baseball! Unfortunately he's doing it in Worcester, not Boston. Still, it was nice to see him behind the plate for five innings, during which he went 1-2 for two walks and threw out a runner. It was also nice for him, given that he played in front of both his father and the family that hosted him during his season playing in the Cape league. "He was great to have. It was exciting, he was coming off being in the College World Series at Oregon State," said his former host Bill Matta. "He'd play with my boys — they played wiffle ball, they'd go for ice cream. Speaking of rehab, Marcelo Mayer hopes to finish his rehab soon and make his debut with the Giants. He doesn't sound too upset about being shipped west. Rutschamn didn't need to be worried about being booed by the fans in Worcester. But apparently Willson Contreras did need to worry about it at Fenway. In his first game after returning from an illness, Sox fans booed the team's best player after he didn't run out a grounder to lead off the eighth. Chad Tracy didn't take isssue with his play, though. "I know how that looks," he said. "But I'm also aware, more than others, that he's a little beat up and told us before the game, 'I don't have everything today.' So I'm fine. Former Manchester United striker Diego Forlan has agreed to become Uruguay head coach on an interim basis.
Forlan succeeds Marcelo Bielsa, who stepped down after Uruguay failed to qualify from the group stage at the World Cup.
The 47-year-old is set to be in charge for the national team's friendlies this autumn before a permanent manager is appointed at the end of this year or the start of 2027.
Forlan has also been named coach for Uruguay's Under-20 team, alongside the senior first team.
Ex-Leeds United boss Bielsa became Uruguay boss in May 2023 but they won 15 of his 39 games in charge and, after their disappointing early exit from the World Cup, the 70-year-old Argentine said his tenure "left nothing behind".

The Red Sox have given a lot of their young players a chance to prove whether they're legitimate players in the big leagues, but not all of them have worked out. One player who obviously didn't work out was Marcelo Mayer.
Mayer, who has dealt with some health struggles over his professional career, really hasn't been able to figure things out offensively in Boston.
Still, at just 23 years old, it felt like the Red Sox could look past his .220 average on the year with just three home runs, 22 RBIs and 205 at-bats.

BOSTON — As the Red Sox re-adjust their roster after making three trades ahead of Monday's deadline, they've decided to move on from a rookie who has been with them all season.
Reliever Ryan Watson, a Rule 5 pick who has appeared in 35 games for Boston, has been designated for ******* ignment, sources said Tuesday. Newcomer Erik Miller, acquired in the trade that sent Marcelo Mayer to San Francisco, will take his place in the bullpen.
The Red Sox also optioned infielder Romy Gonzalez to Triple-A to make room for outfielder Eli White, who was acquired from Atlanta. Backup catcher Jake Rogers will be added to the active roster, taking the spot vacated by Carlos Narváez, who was traded to Baltimore in a package for Adley Rutschman. Rutschman is on the 15-day injured list with wrist inflammation.
The Watson move also clears a 40-man roster spot.
The Red Sox took a flier on Watson, 28, in December when they traded infield prospect Justin Riemer to the A's for him after that club had selected him in the Rule 5 draft. Watson won a roster spot after an up-and-down spring training and has largely served a multi-inning, mop-up role all season. In 55 ⅔ innings, the Alabama native posted a 4.53 ERA and 43 strikeouts. He struggled early but had logged a 3.40 ERA and 33 strikeouts in his last 39 ⅔ innings dating back to April 28. Fifteen of his 35 outings were for two innings or more.

The Boston Red Sox made some major moves at the trade deadline, and the future of their infield has been greatly impacted.
For starters, despite many rumors, the Red Sox did not acquire a long-term shortstop. That leaves the door wide open for Franklin Arias to earn the job next season. Additionally, the Red Sox moved on from Marcelo Mayer, practically ensuring that Curtis Mead will be the team's second baseman moving forward.
As it stands right now, Willson Contreras will be the Red Sox's first baseman next season, and then he has a club option for 2028. Caleb Durbin, who has turned his season around and proven he belongs, will be the third baseman for the foreseeable future. Mead is under contract through 2030 and figures to be locked into second base.
Newly acquired catcher Adley Rutschman is under contract through next season, but is a strong extension candidate after the Red Sox gave up a haul to add him. The only question mark is at shortstop. Trevor Story is due $25 million next season, and has a $25 million club option for 2028.

The San Francisco Giants did the inevitable and got rid of multiple players in a fire sale during MLB's trade deadline in hopes of salvaging the remainder of the season with a focus on next year.
Six players were shipped out of San Francisco and on to different teams. Those players included Tyler Mahle to the Atlanta Braves, Luis Arraez and Caleb Kilian to the Philadelphia Phillies, Heliot Ramos to the New York Yankees, Robbie Ray to the San Diego Padres, and Erik Miller to the Boston Red Sox.
In return, the Giants got back a couple right-handed pitchers, Ramon Marquez and Marty Gair, from the Phillies. The Padres sent right-hand pitcher Miguel Mendez and infielder Joniel Hernandez to the Bay Area. The Yankees sent back left-hand pitcher Henry Lalane and shortstop Kaeden Kent, son of Giants legend and Hall of Famer Jeff Kent. San Francisco got infielder Marcelo Mayer from Boston. While Anthony Molina, who they immediately ******* igned to their Triple-A affiliate, Sacramento River Cats, came via trade with the Braves.
Notable players that remain on the roster are Matt Chapman, Rafael Devers and Willy Adames. Their names were floated around the trade rumor mill but ultimately stay put in San Francisco.

In the hours since he traded 100 of your favorite prospects for Adley Rutschman and dumped 23-yr-old, former No. 4 overall pick Marcelo Mayer an hour later for a left-handed reliever, Red Sox Poobah Craig Breslow has been modestly and somewhat widely accused of grossly overpaying for two players, albeit in contrasting scenarios. In one case, he dealt the star; in the other, he acquired one. Some critics hated it both coming and going, and while we do not personally judge them for all-too-human mistakes of ****** yses, they are incorrect. This was good. Craig did good.
In an MLB that existed before today, before today's actions under the cloud of impending labor warfare, perhaps there would have been self-restraint. Maybe it was just the third straight annual sacrifice of the best player in baseball to the Dodgers the day prior, but the ****** pers were off and phones were lighting up, both those of the team and mine with push alerts. I ****** ume it wasn't just mine. Any inhibition league-wide was tossed to the wind, the getting was good, and Bres, treating his prospects correctly, got his guys. If I find it hard to quibble, it could be because at the FanDuel Sportsbook the Sox have the 5th best odds, -$1500, to win the whole dang thing! To be fair to the Rays — which doesn't feel natural, but whatever — they're also at -$1500. Both teams are ahead of the Phillies at +1900, the Cubs at +2200 and the Angels and Mets at a cool +100000 each. (Perhaps you can predict baseball?) Anyhow, the Yankees are the only team with shorter odds in the AL than the Sox and the Rays at +600. But they stink, so all is fine.
However this season ends, it's reignited a spark around here that hasn't been lit since 2021 and hasn't roared in nearly 10 years. The Blue Jays were two outs away from winning it all last year and changing the whole labor narrative, some say, tho ultimately I don't think by much. Meaning the Sox have a shot. While I love that the Dodgers (a preposterous +160) do their thing, they're up against a emboldened, whiny club of failsons who've had it out for them from the word go and this is something of a last stand. The only other thing that can bring the Dodgers down, seemingly, is the Sox, who just swept them in LA. NEW YORK (AP) — An additional 13 teams, one featuring Venus Williams and some comprised of married couples, have entered the U.S. Open mixed doubles championship.
The new duos announced Monday by the U.S. Tennis ***** ociation raised the total to 29 teams for the 16 spots in the main draw, which will be held on Aug. 25 and Aug. 26.
Williams is partnering with Alexander Bublik for the tournament that was overhauled last year, with a $1 million prize to the winning team, in an effort to get top singles players to compete. Top-ranked Aryna Sabalenka and 24-time Grand Slam singles champion Novak Djokovic headlined the initial list of 16 teams who entered.
Elina Svitolina and her husband Gael Monfils, who is expected to play his final Grand Slam event at the U.S. Open, and newlyweds Katie Boulter and Alex De Minaur also were among the new entries.
The other new teams: Karolina Muchova and Jakub Mensik, Anna Kalinskaya and Lorenzo Musetti, Emma Navarro and Tommy Paul, Maria Sakkari and Karen Khachanov, Tatjana Maria and Valentin Vacherot, Reese Brantmeier and Michael Zheng, Jelena Ostapenko and Marcelo Arevalo, Gabriela Dabrowski and Harri Heliovaara, Demi Schuurs and Julian Cash, and Caty McNally and Robert Cash.

The Boston Red Sox have already made one trade for a middle infielder leading up to the trade deadline by adding Curtis Mead.
Mead is already on the injured list, but he is a piece that can help them for the next few seasons. However, reports suggest they are still in the market for a shortstop. With second base now taken, adding a shortstop would essentially put Marcelo Mayer and Trevor Story out of starting jobs, at least in the long run.
"The Boston Red Sox are giving up on the idea that Trevor Story will help them when he returns from the IL and are aggressively trying to acquire a shortstop," wrote USA Today's Bob Nightengale on Friday. "They are asking about everyone from Zach Neto of the Angels to C.J. Abrams of the Washington Nationals to Otto Lopez of the Miami Marlins to Jeremy Pena of the Houston Astros."
In the short-term, Story and Mayer could come off the injured list and play second base while Mead recovers if the Red Sox add a shortstop. However, the team's search for a shortstop is telling of what they think of both Story and Mayer.

Multiple reports suggest that the Boston Red Sox are in the market for a long-term shortstop, and Jon Heyman named them the likeliest landing spot for Zach Neto during a livestream for Bleacher Report.
The Red Sox traded for Curtis Mead recently, and he is under contract through 2030. He will miss a chunk of time with a wrist injury, but figures to be the everyday second baseman when healthy. That leaves the Red Sox with Marcelo Mayer and Trevor Story as options to be the starting shortstop when they are healthy. Adding a long-term shortstop at the trade deadline could complicate things for their futures.
Not to mention, the Red Sox's top prospect, Franklin Arias, could be ready to debut very soon. Still, the Red Sox have checked in on CJ Abrams, Jeremy Peña, Otto Lopez and Neto. They seem to be determined to add a shortstop with some control, meaning they may be giving up on Story and Mayer.
Neto strikes out a ton, but has serious power. He has 19 homers this year and has 68 home runs in the last three seasons. He could take over as the everyday shortstop, and Mayer or Story could slide over to second base while Mead is out.

The Red Sox made an initial strike on the trade market this weekend when they made the 1-for-1 deal that sent lefty starter Connelly Early to the Nationals for breakout star Curtis Mead. It appears they aren't done, either. Here's what we're hearing on Boston's plans ahead of the trade deadline, which is Monday (August 3) at 6 p.m. ET.
º The Red Sox are keeping an open mind ahead of Monday, but according to major league officials, they're targeting three main needs. First, the club — like every contender this time of year — is interested in adding pitching depth, not just at the back end of the rotation but also in the bullpen. Secondly, catching upgrades remain on the table. Lastly — and perhaps most surprisingly — the club is in the shortstop market.
The addition of Mead at second base hasn't stopped Breslow from continuing to look for an infield bat and one rival evaluator said the belief is that the Red Sox are looking for a "long-term" option at shortstop. The market is rich with big-name candidates who may or may not move, including the Angels' Zach Neto, Houston's Jeremy Peña, the Mets' Francisco Lindor and Washington's C.J. Abrams. Considering the potential pending lockout — and a very poor position player class in free agency this winter — Boston may be looking at this deadline as an opportunity to settle that position.
That search comes with its complications. Landing a shortstop would signal the Red Sox waving the white flag on Trevor Story, whose Red Sox tenure has been defined by injuries but also a massive amount of respect for the leadership he brings. Adding Mead and a shortstop makes the pathway to regular at-bats much less clear for Marcelo Mayer moving forward. And perhaps most strikingly, it further clogs the pipes ahead of the arrival of top prospect Franklin Arias, who was just promoted to Triple-A.
"Not sure why (they're in that market) with Arias coming," said one rival scout.
