The Washington Nationals bullpen blowing games is nothing new and we saw that today. However, the offense bailing out the bullpen and fighting back in the late innings was something different. That fight late in the game helped the Nats get their second walk off win of the season and win the series against the Angels,
As we have discussed, CJ Abrams has really been struggling lately. However, this series has seen a much more lively version of Abrams. While the Angels are not a good team, you cannot solely attribute this improvement to just seeing bad pitching. Walbert Urena was averaging over 99 MPH, but Abrams was still able to get the Nats on the board with an RBI double in the 1st.

These last couple of weeks are very important for the Nats shortstop/second baseman. His OPS is still a ways off what it was a couple months ago. However, if he can stabilize these last couple of weeks, he can end the season on a positive note. There are still plenty of milestones for CJ to reach. He is one stolen base away from a 30-30 season and 4 RBI's away from 100.
His 29th stolen base was perhaps his most important of the season. In the bottom of the 10th inning, the Nats had runners on first and second with 1 out. Abrams noticed that the pitcher was not paying enough attention to him and took off. He swiped third base without a throw. That stolen base ended up winning the Nats the game.

If Carlos Correa is able to return to the Houston Astros lineup by the end of the regular season, he could play second base, The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal reports.
Correa, who turns 32 on Sept. 22, has been on the injured list since May 6 with a torn tendon in his left ankle that required surgery to repair. His 2026 season was believed to be over, as a result.
However, the 12-year veteran has been progressing well in his recovery and ran the bases earlier this week. The plan is for Correa to take up to 10 at-bats in live batting practice at the Astros' spring-training complex in West Palm Beach, Florida. If he doesn't deal with any setbacks, Correa could go on a minor-league rehab **** ignment with Triple-A Sugar Land next week.
Carlos Correa has reported to West Palm Beach and hit in the cages and took grounders there today, Joe Espada said. The plan is for Correa to start hitting on the field Monday.
In 32 games this season, Correa recorded a .279/.369/.418 slash average with 3 home runs, 8 doubles and 16 RBI. He played 23 games at shortstop and 14 at third base.

Regular readers know that I've followed one of the great Cy Young horse races in recent memory, with Cam Schlittler going great start-for-great start with the Blue Jays' Dylan Cease. We got a little bit of separation this week, as the Athletics touched up Cease for four runs in five innings on Monday, and then Schlittler allowed just a solo shot in seven frames against the Rockies on Tuesday. Cam has crept just ahead by fWAR, enjoys a considerable lead in bWAR, and right now I think would end up at the top of most voters' ballots.
But something struck me in the aftermath of Cam's night against Colorado, the same night that Aaron Judge returned to the lineup. Cam Schlittler isn't just the Cy Young favorite, but he's built himself an MVP case. No pitcher has won the award since Clayton Kershaw for the 2014 Dodgers, and the last AL winner was 2011 Justin Verlander. Yordan Alvarez is in the hunt for the first Triple Crown since Miguel Cabrera, Bobby Witt Jr. is probably the best overall player in the league, and if Junior Caminero tops the AL in home runs and plays on the Junior Circuit's best team, he probably gets his share of votes too.
And yet here's the thing: Cam stacks up fairly against all three of them!
Let's take Yordan, who I think has the inside track on the award right now. Schlittler's 0.1 fWAR back, a difference that is literally negligible, and more than three-quarters of a win better by bWAR. Alvarez's candidacy is based around the Triple Crown, probably being the best hitter in baseball, and dragging what we thought was a finally-deflated Houston Astros team to a division ****** le. ****** py AL West or not, that is exactly the blueprint for an MVP, if one for a slightly older voter.
Should Alvarez not win the Triple Crown, he loses a bit of his case, though he's likely still the best hitter in the game on a division winner, one who will have played in the neighborhood of 155 games. That's the big thing both undercutting Witt's MVP claim while bolstering his position as best all-around player — the Kansas City shortstop has only played 128 games at time of writing, yet leads the league in fWAR and bWAR among position players. With a solid-but-not-spectacular 18 homers and 124 wRC+, the parts of his game beyond hitting are doing the heavy lifting there as well. All that and the fact that the Royals are so bad work against him when it comes to end of season awards though, and Bobby seems cursed to be the Dave Stieb of shortstops.

The Nats have been a chore to watch the last month and a half. We really saw that on display during an 0-6 west coast trip. Many of the games were close, but the Nats consistently found ways to lose. That is just what they have been doing lately. Hopefully that can change at home against the Angels.
With a lefty on the mound, Daylen Lile is actually out of the lineup. The outfield will be Dylan Crews, Jacob Young and James Wood. Andres Chaparro will get the DH duties, with Yohandy Morales at first base. With Nasim Nunez on the bereavement list, CJ Abrams will be at shortstop. Harry Ford will do the catching in this one. Nats ace Cade Cavalli will look to snap the losing streak.

Right after Major League Baseball's trade deadline, there was a sense that the Boston Red Sox could have called up Franklin Arias. The idea of bringing up Arias would be simple: the Red Sox believed he could come in and make an impact, and if he did, they'd be a better team come playoff time.
Instead of that being the case, the Red Sox returned Trevor Story, allowing the veteran to come back and prove why he's one of the better shortstops in Major League Baseball.
Story hasn't been perfect since returning, but he's a guy who should be trusted.
As for Arias, it remains unclear what the Red Sox will do until something happens. However, according to the latest report, it doesn't look like Boston is going in that direction.

BALTIMORE (AP) — Aroldis Chapman notched his 400th career save, Eli White hit a three-run homer following an error by Gunnar Henderson and the Boston Red Sox capped a four-game sweep of the Baltimore Orioles with a 3-1 victory Sunday.
Chapman gave up a one-out single in the ninth before striking out Coby Mayo and Christian Encarnacion-Strand to become the ninth player in major league history to record 400 saves. The 38-year-old Chapman earned his first save in 2011 with Cincinnati went on to have 10 seasons with 30 or more, including 33 this season.
Over his lengthy career, Chapman has totaled 24 saves against Baltimore. The lefty got one Friday night that started Boston on its sweep of the sinking Orioles.
Coming off two straight shutout losses, the Orioles used successive two-out doubles by Mayo and Encarnacion-Strand to take a 1-0 lead in the first inning.
In the second, with two outs and a runner on, Henderson failed to make a backhand stab of a grounder to shortstop. White followed with a drive off Kyle Bradish (7-13) that cleared the left-field wall.

Arizona Diamondbacks shortstop Geraldo Perdomo left their matchup with the Houston Astros early on Sunday afternoon after he was struck in the helmet by a line drive.
Perdomo went down in the third inning of the contest at Daikin Park, shortly after he opened the frame with a single. Ketel Marte followed that up with a 93 mph single of his own, but the ball ended up drilling Perdomo directly in the helmet as he tried to run to second.
Perdomo fell back to the dirt and remained there for several minutes, clearly in a lot of pain, before he eventually left the field walking on his own. He did not return.
The Diamondbacks ruled Perdomo out with a head contusion. Further specifics of his injury are not yet known.
Perdomo entered Sunday's contest with a .250 batting average with 48 RBI and nine home runs this season, his sixth in the league. The Diamondbacks hold a 75-68 record and sit in second in the NL West race, just half of a game ahead of the San Diego Padres for the final wild-card spot.

After weeks focused on his fledgling career, Keon Johnson caught up with family. The Houston Astros had the 18-year-old infielder and recent draft pick and his family attend Sunday's game at Daikin Park, with Johnson arriving from their minor-league facility in West Palm Beach, Fla., late Saturday.
"It was a pretty surreal moment to finally see them again," Johnson said. "Once I got to see them, it was like pretty much all the weight finally got back off my shoulders again."
The Astros selected Johnson in the third round in the July draft, with the No. 93 overall pick, out of First Presbyterian Day School in Macon, Ga. They signed Johnson, who was committed to play at Vanderbilt, for a reported over-slot $2 million bonus. Slot value for the No. 93 pick this year was $846,900.
A shortstop listed at 6-foot-2 and 200 pounds, Johnson was selected as the Gatorade Georgia high school player of the year as a junior in 2025. Astros director of amateur scouting Cam Pendino deemed him an "unbelievably impressive kid" with an "exciting blend of bat-to-ball and pitch recognition" after the draft.
"We think our hitting instruction can really help unlock the contact quality here," Pendino said in July. "But when you have a guy with a special blend of bat-to-ball and approach - and really specifically bat-to-ball and pitch recognition as an 18-year-old kid with really good actions in the middle of the diamond on the dirt - it's an awesome recipe."

The Boston Red Sox made a late-season roster move Sunday, calling up utility player Nate Eaton rather than top prospect Kristian Campbell.
Interim manager Chad Tracy explained the decision, noting that Eaton is simply the better option in the outfield right now. Eaton has appeared in 14 games with Boston this season, posting a .125 batting average with one home run, five RBIs and two stolen bases across 32 at-bats.

CHICAGO (AP) — Ryan Jeffers hit a go-ahead, three-run home run in the fifth inning and Taj Bradley settled down after a rough start to lead the Minnesota Twins to a 6-4 win over the Chicago White Sox on Saturday night.
Bradley (11-6) gave up two home runs in the first inning but retired the next 10 batters he faced, allowing four runs on four hits in five innings. Four Twins relievers allowed two hits over four scoreless innings, with Yoendrys Gómez picking up his 21st save.
The Twins pulled within six games of the White Sox in the AL Central and 3 1/2 games of the third AL wild card. The White Sox lost for the fifth time in seven games.
Munetaka Murakami hit his 30th home run in the first inning, a two-run shot that gave the White Sox three players with 30 or more home runs, along with Colson Montgomery and Miguel Vargas, for the first time since 2008.

The Braves will have their hands full at the plate in Friday night's opener of the four-game series in Philadelphia against Phillies ace Cristopher Sánchez.

There are frustrating losses, and then there is whatever the White Sox subjected us to on Wednesday night.
Chicago wasted nearly every opportunity it received, went 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position and handed Houston the only two runs it needed in a maddening 2-0 defeat. The lone silver lining came elsewhere, as Cleveland also lost, leaving the White Sox with a three-game lead in the AL Central.
Davis Martin was considerably sharper in his return from the injured list. Making his first start since Aug. 13 after dealing with a blister on his pitching hand, the righthander breezed through a perfect first inning. He needed only nine pitches and received some help from Colson Montgomery, who made an outstanding play at shortstop for the third out.
The White Sox received their first gift in the second when Andrew Benintendi reached on a missed-catch error by LaMonte Wade Jr. Braden Montgomery followed with a 106.8 mph liner, but it was hit directly at Jose Altuve for the first out. Hayden Wesneski then plunked Colson to put two aboard, only for Chase Meidroth to ground into a strange inning-ending double play. It seems like Jose Altuve is always in the middle of these things.
Martin surrendered a one-out single to Daulton Varsho in the bottom half, and Varsho promptly swiped second. There was no reason to panic, however, as Martin struck out the next two batters on six pitches. His four-seamer was especially effective early.

After suffering a slight strain to his left quad, Cincinnati Reds shortstop Elly De La Cruz was in the designated hitter spot for the entire series against the San Diego Padres.
"He has done a really good job," Reds manager Terry Francona said. "(On Tuesday, Sept. 1), he (ran) first to third. He kept his head up, knew where the ball was. He had a pretty good governor. He knew where he was going. He handled it pretty good."
The Reds have been keeping an eye on De La Cruz, and he doesn't always have to run at his very top speed as a way to protect his quad.
"(The doctor) thinks Elly can play through this with the caveat that if it gets worse, he's got to let us know," Francona said. "He has promised he'll do that."
De La Cruz was pulled from the game last Sunday against the Chicago Cubs. "Me and Freddie (Benavides) kind of double-teamed him about coming out," Francona said.

The New York Yankees called up shortstop George Lombard Jr. last month as he officially made his long-awaited debut on August 4 against the St. Louis Cardinals.
Since then, Lombard has had a roller-coaster month. He started off strong, dazzling with the glove and the bat, but started to falter as August came to a close.
The 21-year-old has already committed seven errors on the season and now owns a .253 batting average, .310 on-base percentage and .677 OPS across his first 79 big-league at-bats. Regardless, that is too small of a sample size to judge the former first-round pick and top Yankees prospect.

Unfortunately, Lombard has missed three straight games due to right knee discomfort. He suffered the injury last Saturday during a game against the Boston Red Sox, causing him to leave early and he has not played since.

Big league rosters have officially expanded now that we've reached the month of August. The Cincinnati Reds responded in kind by promoting both Brandon Williamson and Juan Brito earlier on Tuesday, the latter providing depth across the infield as the Reds face something of a short-term crisis there.
Ke'Bryan Hayes resides on the 10-day IL at the moment. Superstar shortstop Elly De La Cruz has a quad strain, and given how much his leg problems sapped his overall production last season the Reds are going to keep him at DH for the foreseeable future until he's absolutely 100%. That means Matt McLain has moved from 2B over to SS, and to compound things Eugenio Suarez has been absent from team activities the last few days as he works towards gaining US citizenship.
So, the Reds need some infield depth. Edwin Arroyo was recalled to help bridge that gap, and Brito will, too, but that only serves to thin the mix at AAA behind them. Cincinnati responded to that cascade of infield inputs on Tuesday evening by signing veteran infielder Orlando Arcia to a minor league deal.
Arcia, 32, began the 2026 season with in the Minnesota Twins organization and hit .271/.300/.354 with them across 50 PA before being released in late July. He posted an .834 OPS with Minnesota's AAA affiliate in St. Paul along the way, but ended up playing in the Mexican League for a trio of games before the Reds scooped him up.
He was an All Star with Atlanta in 2023 and is a veteran of over 1000 big league games, so he'll certainly provide a stable floor of depth across the middle infield even if the Reds are a) going nowhere this season and b) decide to slow the roll of Elly and others as the final month of the season dwindles down. That said, he owns just a career 76 OPS+, so one can hardly expect him to be lightning in a bottle for the club at this time.

With MLB active rosters expanding from 26 to 28 players on Tuesday, the Twins have made utility man Ben Ross and right-handed reliever Garrett Acton their two September call-ups. Injured Triple-A outfielder Kyler Fedko was designated for **** ignment to make room for Ross on the 40-man roster.
Ross reaching the major leagues for the first time is a cool story and a well-deserved reward for a remarkable season in the minors. Coming into 2026, he was 24 years old and a complete non-prospect after back-to-back poor seasons for Double-A Wichita (.626 OPS in 2024, .671 in '25). This year, everything changed for the former fifth-round pick.
Ross began this season on an incredible tear with Wichita, hitting .424 with a 1.324 OPS in 16 games. That earned him a promotion to Triple-A St. Paul, where he's continued to produce. In 102 games with the Saints, the righty-hitting Ross has a .249 average with 15 home runs, 12 stolen bases, and an .810 OPS.
An Ohio native, Ross played at Division II Notre Dame College (not the university), a school near Cleveland that no longer exists. He was a fifth-round pick in the 2022 draft.
What Ross brings to the Twins is defensive versatility with some pop and speed on offense, which could be useful off the bench and against left-handed pitching. He's played a lot of shortstop and third base in the minors, but he also can and has played on the right side of the infield and at all three outfield spots. Offensively, he has 67 career homers and 73 steals in 499 MiLB games. Ross strikes out a fair amount but also draws walks.

Evidently, the AL West club did not feel that the offers for Neto met their asking price, per FanSided's Robert Murray.
Though Los Angeles' asking price was likely high. Neto is on pace for his third consecutive 20-20 season while playing well below-average defense at shortstop.
"What was said about [Reid] Detmers above applies for Neto: there was massive interest in Neto, the Angels listened, but no team met the very high asking price," Murray wrote Tuesday.

With 19 more losses, the 2026 San Francisco Giants would become just the second team in franchise history to lose 100 games.
Does the three-digit number matter? To some, yes.
"I would say it does," starter Landen Roupp said. "That's not something we want to do. Regardless of whether we're in it or not, we still want to win baseball games and compete. I would say it's a thing that we don't want to hit."
Others believe once a team drops out of contention, the actual number of Ls is beside the point.

San Diego Padres third baseman Luis Rengifo, who began the year with the Milwaukee Brewers, suffered a season-ending injury on a strange play in his team's loss to the Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday, one of two former Brewers with serious injuries.
Confirmation came Monday that Rengifo had suffered an ACL and MCL tear on this play in the seventh inning of the Aug. 29 game, when Rengifo tried to throw home during a chaotic sequence and fell in a heap. The play allowed the Rays to score two additional runs and tie the score at 6-6, a game Tampa Bay went on to win, 7-6.
Rengifo had to be carted from the field. It's a brutal ending for a player who had turned his season around, improving from a .534 OPS with the Brewers in 57 games to a .784 mark in 38 games. That included a grand slam against his old team, the Brewers, earlier in August during a Padres sweep.
The Padres have lost five of six games and are a ½ game behind Arizona for the last National League wild-card spot heading into the week.
Meanwhile, former Brewers shortstop Willy Adames may also be done for the year with the San Francisco Giants. He has a left elbow strain that required a platelet-rich plasma injection, putting the rest of his season in doubt.

The lineup featured Kyle Schwarber as the designated hitter, Trea Turner at shortstop, Bryce Harper in right field, Luis Arraez at second base, Alec Bohm at first base, Bryson Stott at third base, Marsh in left field, J.T. Crawford in centre field, Garrett Stubbs at catcher and Aaron Nola as the starting pitcher.

CHICAGO – The Cincinnati Reds finished a long, meat-grinder road trip with an unlikely series win over the contending Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field Sunday, Aug. 30.
As tough as their gauntlet of a final stretch of games might have looked before their 7-5 victory in the series finale Sunday (Aug. 30), it might have just gotten uglier, pending the next medical exam on All-Star shortstop Elly De La Cruz.
De La Cruz, one of only two members of the Reds lineup who has performed consistently all season, left Sunday's game in the seventh inning because of "left quad tightness." His status as the team headed home with 25 games left on the schedule was not immediately clear.
For now, the Reds pocketed their third win in four games to finish a 4-5 road trip through Arizona, San Francisco and Chicago.
The better individual news for the Reds coming out of Sunday was the status of rising ace Chase Burns, who pitched two outs deep into the sixth against one of the best lineups in baseball to earn the victory, bouncing back six days after his worst start of the season, in San Francisco.

CHICAGO -- Cincinnati Reds All-Star shortstop Elly De La Cruz is facing a possible second stint on the injured list this year after exiting in the seventh inning Sunday (Aug. 30) because of "left quad tightness."
The extent of the injury was not immediately clear. The Reds led 7-3 when De La Cruz left the game, with second baseman Matt McLain shifting to short.
De La Cruz spent close to four weeks on the injured list in June because of a right hamstring strain. It was the first IL move of his career.
De La Cruz, who didn't miss a game in 2025, played through left quad tightness much of the second half that season.
