Week 3 of the 2026 Central Texas high school football season wasn't a great one for the American-Statesman's top area Class 6A teams: No. 1 Lake Travis, playing only its second game after the Cavaliers canceled their season opener, saw its road game against Cibolo Steele end in a 28-28 tie after lightning forced the game to be called in the third quarter. No. 2 Westlake suffered its first loss at Prosper. And No. 3 Dripping Springs lost at Round Rock.
For the second time in three weeks, weather played a factor in Friday night's games. Weather caused delay issues at a handful of matchups, including Lake Travis-Cibolo Steele in Schertz, Wimberley at New Braunfels Long Creek, Lehman at Lockhart and even Giddings at Smithville. Lehman-Lockhart was moved to Saturday.

Missouri coach Eli Drinkwitz blasted Kansas for its Civil War–themed hype video ahead of Friday's "Border War" college football rivalry game.
"I was disappointed in the rivalry—the turn that it took today," Drinkwitz said after the Tigers beat the Jayhawks 38–21 in Lawrence. "I thought that was uncalled for."
Kansas released a controversial social media video on Thursday ahead of hosting Missouri for the first time since 2005.
"This rivalry is different, because it's built on something much deeper than just school pride," narrator and former Kansas football star Gilbert Brown said. "It's fueled by hatred, passed down through generations. Our roots reach back to the Civil War, when blood was spilt over what you believed in and which side you stood on. There are heroes and villains, only allegiance decides their legacy. There's right and wrong. There's Kansas and Missouri." The video has more than 35 million views on X/Twitter as of Saturday morning.
"This is about two teams playing football," Drinkwitz said. "Especially on 9/11, when we need more unity now than ever before, to be putting some stuff on your screen—celebrating—everybody's got complicated pasts, and to make that an icon was bizarre to me. So, I'm just glad that this whole right-versus-wrong bullcrap that was started just got settled on a football field."

Over time NFL teams tend to develop identities, and they often stay the same through different coaches, different quarterbacks and different front office regimes. For the Pittsburgh Steelers, their calling card has long been physical defense and getting to the quarterback paired with a potent run game.
That dynamic is at least half true going into the 2026 season. They ranked near the bottom of the NFL in rushing yards last year but remain an excellent pass-rushing team, finishing sixth with 48 last year.
Outside of the trenches, Pittsburgh's best skill player is former Seattle Seahawks star DK Metcalf, a rare athlete who the Atlanta Falcons are going to need to contain if they're going to upset the Steelers this week.
Last season Metcalf posted 59 catches, a team-high 860 receiving yards and six touchdowns - which was less than his usual production in Seattle, but it would be a mistake to write Metcalf off. The Seahawks' playoff loss to the 49ers a few years ago proves he can thrash even elite defenses, going off for 10 catches, 136 yards and two touchdowns.
For one thing, Metcalf is bigger, stronger and faster than any defensive back that Atlanta can put on the field. That means the Falcons have to be smarter about defending him.

Another season begins with the Dallas Cowboys and New York Giants battling each other to start 1-0 in the NFC East race. Lately it's been the Cowboys getting the wins, especially when Dak Prescott is under center.
Things have a way of getting turned around when it comes to rivalries. Despite the Cowboys owning the matchups in the last 10 years, the Giants could be primed to make things more difficult. New York has made some significant changes this offseason that will challenge the Cowboys.
Here are three reasons to hate playing the Giants on Sunday night football to open the season.
Despite dominating the games between the two teams recently, the Cowboys need to be wary of a Giants team that's turned over their franchise to a Super Bowl winning coach. John Harbaugh arrives with a winning pedigree and a 4-1 record against the Cowboys, who have been feasting on poor coaches in New York since Tom Coughlin left.
The Giants' culture has changed with Harbaugh's arrival, and the first matchup with a new regime always brings surprises. Harbaugh's a veteran coach, but he hired Matt Nagy as his offensive coordinator, with whom he's never worked with as his OC, and Dennard Wilson is a first-time defensive coordinator. That can make for the Cowboys seeing some things they haven't seen from the Giants on both sides of the ball.

The New England Patriots may need to address their edge rusher unit after another injury landed on Harold Landry's doorstep to begin the 2026 NFL season.
The Patriots have a productive unit when healthy, led by Landry and Dre'Mont Jones, with rookie Gabe Jacas expected to produce meaningfully for the team. However, more may be needed.
Bleacher Report's Kristopher Knox labeled Maxx Crosby and Kayvon Thibodeaux as being two star edge rushers that the Patriots ought to trade for in 2026, in the event that they pursue a player to fill their needs in the trade market.
"If another team comes calling about Crosby, the Raiders will undoubtedly listen," Knox said. "They're in the early stages of a rebuild and may not be ready to contend while Crosby is still in his playing prime. The asking price will be high, but teams that believe they can chase a Super Bowl are bound to target him before November 10."
Crosby is a superstar edge rusher who has the talent to take New England over the top in the Super Bowl race. Giving up draft picks and a player or two will do the Patriots much good to stack their roster with Drake Maye, A.J. Brown, Christian Gonzalez, Romeo Doubs and Crosby as the heaviest-hitters on their team.

The game of the week, by a wide margin, will be played in Austin, Texas, as the Texas Longhorns host the Ohio State Buckeyes for a rematch of last year's Week 1 loss in a game that will pit two top-five teams against each other. That's not the only SEC-Big Ten rematch of note, as the Michigan Wolverines host the Oklahoma Sooners after last week's controversial Hail Mary win over Western Michigan.
We also get a couple of intriguing conference showdowns in the SEC and Big 12 as Alabama travels to Kentucky for Will Stein's SEC coaching debut, while Arizona and BYU square off in Provo in a battle between possible conference **** le contenders.

The Dallas Mavericks are at an interesting crossroads with their organization right now as they try to figure out the best moves for their future. They have a Rookie of the Year in Cooper Flagg, but the biggest question is about what they are building around him.
Kyrie Irving is set to be the point guard, but his time in Dallas may come to an end as early as this season.
"The Mavericks, as we've been writing since mid-June, have consistently swatted away trade interest this offseason in nine-times-an-All-Star guard Kyrie Irving. Rival teams, however, continue to wonder aloud about how firmly Dallas will stick to that stance once the season begins and the next in-season trade deadline on Feb. 11 gradually approaches. The primary factor fueling that curiosity, of course, is that fact that Irving is 34 and Mavericks star forward Cooper Flagg is 19. Not your average age gap between the team's two best players," The Stein Line's Marc Stein wrote.
While Irving could be on the trade block soon, PJ Washington and Daniel Gafford have also been mentioned. Heavy.com's Sean Deveney believes it will be Gafford that gets traded.

America's F1 hopeful Colton Herta pulls out of the sprint F2 race in Madrid with illness, but it comes after the FIA penalised him to start from the pitlane.
It is not going well for America's F1 hopeful Herta at all in the FIA Formula 2 (F2) Championship in 2026. Having taken a big step to move away from IndyCar in the hope of securing enough superlicence points to race in Formula 1, potentially with Cadillac, the season hasn't gone his way at all.
Racing for Hitech GP, Herta is 17th with 26 points after 10 rounds, with a best result of fifth. The American is racing at F1's new Madring circuit in Madrid on Spanish GP weekend. He started it well in fourth. He was doing well in qualifying in the Top 10 for the most part.
However, he dropped to 12th in the end after he suffered a crash at Turn 19 to end the session. Following the day's run, just before Restricted Period One kicked in for F2 teams, Hitech GP found a problem with the American's car, which they started to work on.
Since it was a priority, they continued working into Restricted Period One and therefore were in breach of Article 21.6a of the F2 regulations. The technical delegate reported the matter, and the stewards duly penalised him with a pitlane start in Madrid's sprint race on Saturday.

It was great to hear Dave Burns and John Gambadoro Friday afternoon on ArizonaSports 98.7 FM when they mentioned my story about the Arizona Cardinals potentially shocking the world this season.
Their discussion morphed into what they believed the Cardinals would have to do to "shock the world." Different thoughts were expressed, including not being one of the five worst teams in the league. In another, it was said the offense would shock the world if they ranked in the top 10.
To that end, I've always taken exception to the rankings as gospel mantra that usually takes place in a vacuum. By that I mean, ranking whatever number it is in yards or points, for example, is meaningless unless it takes into account the actual statistics for other teams in the rankings.
Last season, the Denver Broncos were 10th in total yards at 342.7 per game and 14th in points per game (23.6 average). The Baltimore Ravens were 16th (smack dab in the middle of the 32-team league) in yards at 332.2 per game and 11th in points (24.9 per game). The Kansas City Chiefs were 20th in yards (320.7 average) and 21st in points (21.3).
It's easy to see that the difference in yards per game between the Broncos and Ravens (seven ranking spots) was only 10.5 per game and 22.0 per game between the Broncos and Chiefs (11 spots).

It's not just game day, it's the first home game for Bob Chesney as head coach of the UCLA Bruins. UCLA will be taking on San Diego State at the Rose Bowl, with both teams eyeing a 2-0 start to the 2026 season.

Kirk Herbstreit has revealed his top three college football teams after an action-packed opening week. The ESPN ***** yst highlighted Miami, Indiana and LSU after seeing their new-look rosters make early statements.
Speaking on "The Stephen A. Smith Show," Stephen A. Smith asked Herbstreit to name the nation's best teams. Herbstreit immediately pointed toward Miami before naming the defending national champion and LSU.
"I got to start with Darian Mensah transferring over from Duke down to Miami," Herbstreit said. He praised Miami after the Hurricanes "just blew Stanford out of the water," putting them firmly in his early playoff discussion.

As the conversation continues on the Rams' apparent misfire regarding the decision to barnstorm into and out of Melbourne, there's another question that needs to be asked about Week 1 international games played a long way away from the U.S.
Michael Holley mentioned the concept on Friday's PFT Live. And it's a good idea — the league should treat the Week 1 international game like the Super Bowl and require the teams to arrive early.
If the goal is to export the game to the countries, the effort needs to be more comprehensive. Get there early. Make local appearances. Have multiple press conferences in the place where the game will be played.
It takes the travel strategy out of the teams' hands and makes the issue part of the overall obligation.
Yes, the rest of the story regarding the 49ers-Rams travel adventure will unfold in Week 2, and possibly beyond. But the 49ers seemed to be far more prepared to play given their decision to go to Australia a week early. Having both teams arrive on the same day avoids the possibility that one team will be acclimated and one won't.

Whitworth acknowledged what could have been in the 2025 Super Bowl, while looking forward to Denver's 2026 season, especially against the Seattle Seahawks, a game which Whitworth will attend as part of the TNF crew.
"That's another one," Whitworth said of the Broncos-Seahawks matchup in Week 6. "I still think that's a game that could have been last year's Super Bowl, but it also could be this year's. Both those teams have the potential to be there again."
The big game against Seattle will be a pivotal one for the Broncos; it is the final game of a brutal six-game opening stretch; however, it will be potentially the best-looking game of the season, as both squads will wear their beautiful throwback uniforms.
Whitworth complimented the Broncos for their moves in the 2026 offseason, showing they can be contenders once again.

Baseball's best team is going to see a lot of the San Francisco Giants during these final days of the regular season. Given that it's a brave new world around here, we'll make sure all of them get a proper introduction.
The Los Angeles Dodgers couldn't possibly know much about Jonah **** , Turner Hill, Shay Whitcomb, Drew Cavanaugh, Trent Harris - there, that covers about half the group. The defending champs are too busy trying to figure out their postseason plans, and it's a lot more complicated than you may think.
The Dodgers without Shohei Ohtani? Unthinkable.
Resting uncomfortably on the injured list, felled by a sore left knee and right arm, Ohtani won't be in uniform for the Giants' three-game series that begins Friday at Dodger Stadium. When the two teams close out the season at Oracle Park on Sept. 25-27, he will have been eligible for only two prior games, against San Diego at home.
Until recently, the Dodgers tried to shake off Ohtani's aches and pains. This is the greatest talent in the history of baseball, a man who looks **** near indestructible at times. He rises above everyone, godlike, as he lodges a three-run homer alongside a pitching masterpiece.

Eli Drinkwitz turned his postgame news conference in Lawrence toward a 90-second video on Friday night, a few hours after Missouri had settled the 122nd Border War 38-21 at David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium.
The clip, ******* led "Heroes and Villains" and narrated by former Kansas nose tackle Gilbert Brown, went up on the Jayhawks' social accounts on Thursday and reached back to the Civil War fighting along the state line, splicing in images of John Brown and William Quantrill under a narration line about right and wrong, Kansas and Missouri.
Kansas ran it again on the videoboard shortly before kickoff. Drinkwitz was asked about it once the Tigers had moved to 2-0, and he did not stop at one sentence.

The Oklahoma Sooners take on the Michigan Wolverines on Saturday in a big-time road matchup in Ann Arbor, Mich. Both teams are looking to remain undefeated two weeks into the season.
The Sooners won the game in Norman a year ago behind a big game from John Mateer. In a 24-13 win in primetime, Mateer threw for 270 yards, a touchdown, and an interception. He also carried the ball 19 times for 74 yards and two touchdowns. The Sooners were up 14-0 at halftime before a 75-yard touchdown run from Justice Haynes on the first play from scrimmage of the second half cut the lead to 14-7.
Mateer and the Sooners made it 21-7 with 10 minutes to go in the third, and the defense stifled Bryce Underwood and the Wolverines to earn the 24-13 win. Oklahoma held Underwood to 9 of 24 for 142 yards passing and three carries for minus-1 yard rushing. Outside of the 75-yard run, Oklahoma held the Wolverines to just 2.29 yards per carry.
Oklahoma is expected to have a better offense than the one that beat the Wolverines in 2025. If the Sooners can get a similar defensive effort against a team that struggled to move the ball on the MAC's Western Michigan, it should be a good day for the boys in the crimson and cream.

Well STS readers, I come to you this week recovering from an extremely sobering experience last Saturday night. I predicted a fight even in a loss, and if it even qualified as a fight, it resembled Drago vs. Apollo in Rocky IV. Probably an adequate ******* ogy because Apollo USED to be great, but he was no match for the modernized superweapon Drago. Did the Soviets cheat to develop him? Absolutely, but at that point they were doing whatever it took to be superior no matter the morality of it. Clemson fans like me could be heard yelling "throw in the ******* towel!" by maybe the fourth possession of the game. It was that obvious that Clemson was completely and totally outmatched at the lines of scrimmage and the surrounding skill had zero chance because of it on either side of the ball.
How did it come to this? I posted this in a comment on the game review thread and will paste it here as it summarizes what I have painfully allowed myself to realize: "I hate it for Dabo and others who really want to do this the way it is supposed to be done, which is to develop men and grow boys to men and that takes time more often than not. That is what the transfer portal and NIL and lack of tampering control has created and as much as Dabo has tried to evolve I just don't see how he could ever get to what actually has to be done now if you want to be elite. I bet if you begin to track LSU, Ohio State, Texas, etc, going forward, you will see that maybe 50% of their rosters will start and finish with them and the other half will be brought in from elsewhere at some stage of their five-year playing window. Dabo swallows hard just to have the maybe 15% we are up to now that would check that box. I totally understand why, but either Dabo has to let go of that OR Clemson needs a huge break and actual sane rules return to CFB. Otherwise, we are back to 1995 where we might be able to beat ok teams and bad teams but are done beating anyone that is legit top 15 in stature."
I am a Clemson Tiger for life and lived through the lean years between Ford and Dabo. I'll still tune in and attend games when I can, but I know now that something has to give if Clemson is ever going to hope to compete at the highest level and it may get worse before it can get better. I'm still looking for pathways to wins, as many wins as this team can find a way to manage. I agree they are likely better than that product we saw in Baton Rouge, but that is not saying a lot either considering how FCS level the Tigers looked in that game.

Kansas State (1-0) takes on Washington State (0-1) in the first ever meeting between the schools. Kickoff is scheduled for 11 AM on Fort Riley Day at Bill Snyder Family Stadium and the game will be broadcast on TNT. In the opener for both teams, Wazzu lost to Washington 24-10 in a much-too-early edition of the Apple Cup. Wazzu struggled on offense, though the score might have been closer if not for a couple of missed field goals and a couple of interceptions by transfer QB Cade Pinnick. Washington State's defense definitely had its moments, however. If you're like me, you probably missed the game in its entirety. Luckily, we have Drew Schneider on hand to break it all down.
The general gist seems to be that Wazzu may not be the best team on the Wildcats' schedule this year, but Kansas State overlooks the Cougars at its own peril. As Collin Klein himself noted, Pinnick can do some damage with his legs and K-State's defense seemed ever-so-slightly suspect against the run in the blowout win over Nicholls. There's also Wazzu's defense to consider, which managed to get a key 4th down stop on the goal line against Washington, thanks to stalwarts like Keith Brown, a linebacker who missed all of last season with injury and is now the teammate's de facto standard bearer.
I don't pay a lot of attention to fan Q&As, but there are some interesting tidbits in Kellis Robinett's weekly mailbag, including that Klein's recruiting philosophy is that every player is merely leasing a roster spot until someone beats them out of it. Competition is constant is apparently CK's mantra. See? There is only football.

The state's big game will be on a big stage.
The Sept. 12 Cy-Hawk football showdown in Iowa City will be televised nationally on NBC at 6:30 p.m. CT.
Both teams are coming off easy Week 1 victories.
Iowa State picked up a 38-10 win over SEMO to kick off the Jimmy Rogers era. The No. 21 Hawkeyes dominated Northern Illinois with a 41-0 victory.
This is the first road game for Iowa State.

I have happy memories of this fixture because one of my three goals for Chelsea came against Hull City in the FA Cup.
Hull haven't conceded yet and they are the team I have been most wrong about so far this season.
With every passing week, they are putting more egg on my face but it can't keep happening, can it?
It probably can, but I am still going for Chelsea to win this. The Tigers have defended brilliantly so far, but they are not going to keep out Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers and Joao Pedro.
Hull will defend ferociously but, as Chelsea showed in the Carabao Cup against Leeds on Wednesday, they have enough quality to play through teams who sit in; and, if they score first, then Hull will have to open up - that's my theory anyway.

Kylian Mbappe has been scoring goals for fun for both Real Madrid and France over the past few years.
Unfortunately for him, though, those goals have not necessarily translated into success for his teams in terms of trophies.
There has been some criticism over whether Mbappe is detrimental to the team's success, but the Frenchman has vehemently dismissed those claims.

Lanier senior running back Nicholas Torres rushedfor 131 yards and a touchdown in the first half as the Voks defeated Jefferson 31-14 on Friday at the San Antonio ISD Athletic Complex in the two teams' District 14-5A-II opener.
"What I saw on the field was what we went over at practice," Torres said. "We just kept trying to pound the rock and run up the score."
Torres' efforts and a 1-yard rushing touchdown early in the second half from sophomore QB Erick Esparza propelled the Voks to a 17-6 advantage with just under two minutes to play in the third quarter.
After an early score, not much was going for Jefferson on offense, but the Mustangs kept plugging away on the ground, eventually punching in a 6-yard rushing touchdown from senior running back Michael Bejar.
The Mustangs lined up to attempt a 2-point conversion that would cut the deficit down to three, but Mother Nature had other plans as players and coaches were forced off the field due to a lightning delay.

With only 15 games left for the Detroit Tigers in the 2026 MLB regular season, it's only a matter of time before they get mathematically eliminated from the postseason hunt. With a record of 68-79 even after taking a 6-2 victory over the Colorado Rockies on the road on Friday, they are 6.5 games back of the third and final Wild Card spot with six teams ahead of them in the standings.
Nonetheless, even with the Tigers poised to miss the postseason, it's difficult not to feel excited over their prospects of being a contending team in the near future. After all, they have quite the impressive position player core — with rookie Kevin McGonigle turning plenty of heads already despite being in just his first season in the big leagues.
McGonigle did go 0-4 on the night in the Tigers' win over the Rockies. But as a whole, he has been brilliant this season for the Tigers. He ended the night with an OPS of .788 to go along with 16 home runs and 62 runs batted in — being a consistent table-setter for Detroit. And manager AJ Hinch believes that he should be the runaway favorite to win the Rookie of the Year award.

"We're chasing hard to have absolute elite execution," Quinn said last month. "I also recognize there are gonna be mistakes, and I want them to happen when you're working right on the edge of something; you're going to make them. I encouraged Sonny just the other day: make them. I want you to test yourself to see: Can I go to that ****** e to get the ball? Can I be in that location? Can I go take my shot? I want them right on the edge, knowing that mistakes are part of it, and then when they happen, that they don't get repeated. And so, that's the execution piece."

Friday night's highly anticipated out-of-district contest between Steele and Austin Lake Travis at Lehnhoff Stadium was canceled in the third quarter due to weather. The two teams were tied at 28-28 with 04:42 remaining in the third quarter when the game entered a lightning delay.
The lightning delay began around 9 p.m. and the game was officially called around 40 minutes later due to the inclement weather. UIL guidelines say that activities must be suspended when lightning is detected within a 10-mile radius of the event venue. Activities may not resume until lightning is no longer within the 10-mile radius and 30 minutes have passed since the last lightning strike.
The 28-28 score will likely be counted as a tie toward Steele and Lake Travis' records, but it will not have playoff implications since it is from an out-of-district contest. Per UIL rules, any out-of-district varsity football games that have gone past halftime are considered to be official contests.
"If both teams have made a good faith effort to complete the game and have not been able to finish the game or mutually agree to end the game at the point of suspension, the game shall be declared final with the score at the time of suspension," the UIL website reads.
While suspended games could be restarted at a later time, the UIL does not allow games to be played past Saturday. Lake Travis is also roughly 70 miles away from San Antonio. Steele head coach David Saenz estimated that the game could have resumed around 11 p.m., around two hours after the contest was paused.
