The summer break is often viewed as a chance for Formula 1 teams and drivers to reset, but history shows it can also be a turning point in a championship battle.
While some drivers return from the shutdown with renewed momentum and find another level of performance, others struggle to maintain their early-season form. From ******* le contenders and regular podium finishers to championship challenges falling apart and car performance dropping, the post-summer stretch has produced some dramatic swings in recent F1 history.
GPblog looks back at some drivers who improved after the summer break and others who saw their form disappear.
Verstappen's ******* le hopes looked dead and buried going into the summer break of 2025, as after a ninth place finish at the Hungarian Grand Prix, he sat 97 points off the championship lead. However, the Dutchman found another level after the summer break, finishing on the podium in each of the 10 remaining races.
He won six of the final races and ultimately only lost out on the ******* le by two points to Lando Norris. His consistency, qualifying pace and ability to maximise difficult weekends helped somehow revive his championship hopes, and he came close to achieving the greatest comeback in Formula 1 history.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — Preparations for the next men's World Cup have already begun for teams in Southeast Asia, just weeks after Spain clinched the 2026 ****** le.
The ASEAN Cup has kicked off in Phnom Penh, and host Cambodia has already lost its opening games 2-1 to Singapore and 5-1 to Indonesia in Group A.
The biennial tournament features 10 national teams from the region of 650 million, and there's more on the minds of coaches and players than the trophy on offer in late August.
With Asian qualification for the 2030 World Cup starting next year, Southeast Asia's soccer powerhouses such as Indonesia — the only team from the region to appear on the global stage, when it competed as the Dutch East Indies in 1938 — Thailand and Vietnam, have an opportunity to start preparations early.
ASEAN Football Federation president Khiev Sameth said getting another team from the region into the World Cup is within reach.

The Yankees are in a battle with the Tampa Bay Rays for the AL East crown while also trying to hold off a surging Boston Red Sox team. With Aaron Judge and Giancarlo among those on the injured list, New York will be looking to add reinforcements for the final few months of the year.

The biggest storyline surrounding Michigan this season will be how quickly the program adjusts to new leadership under head coach Kyle Whittingham. The Wolverines have built a reputation around physical football, strong defense, and controlling the line of scrimmage, and maintaining that identity will be a major focus as the program enters a new chapter.
The other big question is can Bryce Underwood take the next step to becoming an elite quarterback that this offense needs?
Bryce Underwood's Next Step
The biggest factor in Michigan's ceiling will likely be the continued development of quarterback Bryce Underwood. After arriving with enormous expectations, Underwood enters the season with the opportunity to prove he can become the next great quarterback in Ann Arbor.
Michigan has traditionally leaned on its running game and defense, but the modern Big Ten requires consistent quarterback play to compete with teams like Ohio State, Oregon, and Penn State. If Underwood can become more comfortable operating the offense, making quick decisions, and creating explosive plays, the Wolverines' offense could take a significant step forward.

Tuesday (July 28) was a big day in the NFL, as the final 26 teams reported to training camp.
That means, as quickly as anyone can say camp has begun, the Arizona Cardinals have concluded the extra week of work they had because of their presence in the Pro Football Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio, on Thursday, Aug. 6 against the Carolina Panthers.
Like the Cardinals, the Panthers also had their veterans report on July 22.
All coaches are big into planning, but Cardinals defensive coordinator Nick Rallis might be at the top of the list in looking ahead. So it was that he was asked last Friday what he was accomplishing with the extra week that he might not have been able to without the additional practice time.
"It's so funny," he said. "Like, I'm kind of mapping out installs for the future and it's like, dang, this is an extra week. What would I be doing if I didn't have this extra week? Because I'm like, 'Oh man, I got to get this in somewhere.' But I would say the biggest thing with that extra week is you can spread out installing the scheme, which allows you to just take your time a little bit more during the install meetings and really be on the details with the players.

The Oregon Ducks men's basketball program has gone through a litany of changes this offseason, with eight incoming transfers replacing eight outgoing transfers. The coaching staff has also experienced its fair share of changes, as long-time Dana Altman ***** istant coach Mike Mennenga departed for Creighton and Brandon Kuhn was hired as the new strength and conditioning coach.
The latest change comes from ***** istant coach Kevin McKenna, who has decided to retire. McKenna has worked on the player development side for the past few seasons, helping develop a trio of Jackson Shelstad, Nate Bittle and Kwame Evans Jr. into All-Big Ten caliber players. He spent 16 seasons at Oregon.
McKenna's basketball career spans back a number of decades, as he was a standout player at Creighton before being selected 88th overall in the fourth round by the Los Angeles Lakers in the 1981 NBA Draft. He spent six seasons in the league with eight different teams before heading into coaching after his playing days concluded.
Thank you, Coach McKenna, for helping lead Oregon to new heights during your 16 seasons on the bench.
Enjoy retirement, K-Mac! #GoDucks pic.twitter.com/Ms0Zkv9PSW
The Minnesota native coached under Altman at Creighton, and held head coaching jobs at Nebraska-Omaha and Indiana State before being hired in 2010 to be an ***** istant coach with the Ducks.

The NFLPA's P.R. push for grass fields should focus less on making a broad-brush effort to shame the owners into choosing a better surface and more on getting specific teams to flip. That effort, as previously explained, should start with the Seahawks, who are in the process of getting a new owner.
On Tuesday, a pair of Seattle veterans made the case for grass during training-camp press conferences.
Defensive lineman Leonard Williams was asked whether seeing temporary grass at Lumen Field for the World Cup made him wish the grass would remain permanently.
"For sure," Williams told reporters, "I think the whole NFL felt that way. We obviously prefer to be on grass. It's less impact, better on the body. I understand there's a lot of things that go into having grass in the stadium that I don't fully understand yet, but if it was up to a player and it just came down to grass or turf, we obviously prefer grass."
Receiver Cooper Kupp was initially more concise. "That would be sweet," he said with a laugh.

San Francisco Giants outfielder Harrison Bader was involved in a weekend scooter accident that aggravated his left foot injury, the team announced July 28.
Bader played for the Cincinnati Reds for part of the 2023 season. He has played for seven teams over 10 MLB seasons.
Bader hasn't played since May 29 because of left plantar fasciitis.
The Giants said Bader met with a foot and ankle specialist July 27 in Indianapolis, but it "was complicated by the fact that he had a scooter accident on Saturday night/early Sunday morning and further injured his same foot."
The Reds are scheduled to visit the Giants in San Francisco August 24-26.

Mexico all but booked their ticket to the Quarterfinals of the CONCACAF U20 Championship after defeating Costa Rica by a 2-0 score. Mexico overcame going down to 10 players to get a victory that place them at 6 points, basically guaranteeing them to be at worst one of the two best third placed teams and thus the ticket to the Quarterfinals. Mexico will look to win the group against Guatemala on Thursday while Costa Rica faces off against Antigua and Barbuda earlier that day.
The 1st half started with Mexico coming out with most of the starting 11 from their opener against Antigua and Barbuda. Off a free kick, a cross into the area was almost deflected in by Gabriel Sibaja, as Costa Rica had the first chance of the match. Off a counter, Kionell Estrada got off a right footed shot in the area that went wide. A right footed shot from outside the area from Hugo Camberos went well wide. Both teams traded possession as the match became very even. A bad clearance allowed Matias Cordero to get the ball in the area but his shot was well saved by Mexico's goalkeeper, Juan Liceaga. After a harsh foul, there was a short scuffle between teams that ended with David Carro getting a Yellow card. The match continued to be extremely chippy as Mexico couldn't get going against Costa Rica's physical play. From outside the area, Samir Inda got off a great left footed shot that was deflected off the post. Mexico started to dominate possession as Costa Rica sat back and waited to counter. After a cross into the area was won by Santiago Sandoval, he would get brought down in the area by Adrian Espinoza and a Penalty Kick was given to Mexico. Hugo Camberos stepped up to take the PK and got off a thunderous right footed shot that went past Costa Rica's goalkeeper, Ian O'Rourke to score and give Mexico the 1-o lead. From outside the area, Juan Echivelstre got off a great right footed shot that forced O'Rourke to make a great save. Emmanuel Hernandez answered with a right footed shot from outside the area that Liceaga made a great save on it. The halftime whistle blew and after a slow start to the match, Mexico ended the half being the better team.
The 2nd half started with Mexico subbing out Carlos Hernandez for Yohan Orozco. Strangely three minutes into the half, Mexico subbed out Aldahir Valenzuela (possibly because of an injury) for Diego Reyes. A bad clearance from Liceaga ended up with him clearing the ball and kicking Sibaja in the face which earned him a straight red card. It was a terrible mistake from the goalkeeper that now placed the match in extreme danger with only 10 players. Mexico would sub out Juan Sigala for Cristo Navarrate, which because of the strange substitution of Valenzuela, meant that Mexico only had one window for subs for the rest of the match. Off a counter, Inda would make a great pass to Santiago Sandoval, whose left footed shot would be deflected by Emmanuel Brenes past O'Rourk and into the net to score and give Mexico the surprising 2-0 l

Atlanta Hawks eye blockbuster move for rising Nuggets star Peyton Watson originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Atlanta Hawks are reportedly among several teams keeping a close eye on Denver Nuggets forward Peyton Watson as his restricted free agency continues to unfold.
According to league sources who spoke with The Athletic, the Nuggets have offered the 23-year-old forward a five-year, $70 million contract to remain in Denver. The deal has not yet been finalized, but it signals the franchise's desire to retain one of its most promising young players.
Watson has emerged as an intriguing two-way talent during his time with the Nuggets, earning praise for his defensive versatility, athleticism, and ability to impact games without needing the ball in his hands. At just 23 years old, he is viewed as a player whose best basketball is still ahead of him.
Despite Denver's offer, several teams are exploring potential sign-and-trade scenarios if negotiations take a different direction. League sources indicate that the Atlanta Hawks, Milwaukee Bucks, and Los Angeles Clippers have all expressed interest in acquiring Watson should he become available.

Josh Hart responds to Draymond Green calling out Jalen Brunson and the Knicks originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Jalen Brunson made headlines when he took a pay cut worth $100,000,000 with the New York Knicks. It ended up being successful because that was the key to the Knicks being able to sign players like Karl-Anthony Towns and OG Anunoby to bigger contracts.
Considering they were crucial to winning the championship, just like Brunson, it was worth it. Some people were not big fans of this, including Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green, because he thinks the Knicks could have afforded it anyway.
It is not surprising that Green has been vocal about Brunson taking a pay cut. He has always been an advocate of players getting the most out of the teams that pay them, but Brunson was a different story. He had no issues with taking a pay cut, but it seems Green has an issue.
Most of the NBA world, including the players are used to hearing Draymond talk about the latest topics in the league. Considering he also has a part-time career as a member of the NBA media through podcasts and TV shows, it is nearly impossible not to hear from him.

Heat predicted to sign $342M 14-year veteran, 3-time All-Star to pair with Giannis Antetokounmpo originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Miami Heat were one of the five finalists for LeBron James this summer, and adding him to their current roster would have been a dream scenario. However, things did not work out that way this time around.
The four-time NBA champion decided to finish his career with the Philadelphia 76ers, making his decision official on Friday.
"LeBron James is signing with the Philadelphia 76ers for his final run at another NBA championship, he announced Friday," ESPN's Dave McMenamin wrote. "James, 41, is signing a two-year, $8 million contract with a player option, Klutch Sports Group CEO Rich Paul told ESPN's Shams Charania."
Like other teams around the league, the Heat must now evaluate the remaining options available. One name Miami has shown interest in is Klay Thompson, who would provide the team with much-needed shooting.

As expected, Micah Parsons is starting training camp on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list as he continues to recover from an ACL tear.
The Green Bay Packers placed him on the PUP list Tuesday. But there was reporting Tuesday that should get Packers fans and football fans in general excited.
Per The Athletic's Packers beat writer, Matt Schneidman, the timeline points to a good chance that Parsons returns for a Week 6 showdown against his former Dallas Cowboys on "Sunday Night Football." ***** uming that both teams are playing competitive football by then, that would add up to a must-watch game for NFL fans.
Parsons tore his ACL in Week 15 on Dec. 12 last season against the Denver Broncos. He had surgery on Dec. 30. Per Schneidman, the Packers have a strict "nine-month no-football rule" after an ACL tear, which would place him back on the practice field at the earliest on Sept. 30, four days before a Week 4 game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
That timeline would give Parsons roughly 2 ½ weeks to ramp up for Green Bay's Oct. 18 home game against the Cowboys. And that's what Schneidman expects to happen.

The San Diego Padres have won three games in a row and will look to make that four games with a win against the Colorado Rockies who have a 2-4 record coming into the two-game series at Petco Park.
As is the case seemingly every season, the Rockies players are essentially auditioning for other teams around the league. It is understandable that the Colorado roster wants to play well.
The Padres are stuck in limbo of will they or won't they as the trade deadline approaches. The San Diego players have made no secret that they are aware of how important the next six games are to the team and the season. The Padres have built momentum despite a 5-5 road trip and will need a win today to keep the good vibes going.
Michael King came into the season as a co-ace with Nick Pivetta. He quickly became the sole ace when Pivetta went down with injury. King has not had a dominant season, but he has looked better over the last couple of outings. He is he lone pitcher in the San Diego rotation that is a threat to throw a complete game and time out.
Michael Lorenzen has had a down year, but that does not automatically mean the San Diego offense will have success against the Colorado right-hander. Lorenzen sits at 3-9 on the year and carries a 6.53 ERA. The Padres will have to jump on Lorenzen early and often to give King a chance to pitch with a lead.

There were several reasons the Los Angeles Rams lost the NFC Championship Game last season, but none of those issues fell on the offense. It was multiple defensive and special teams failures that led to the loss.
In the contest, returner Xavier Smith, who established himself in that role in 2024 and 2025, ***** ed two punts in that contest, losing one of them. The lost fumble immediately led to a touchdown for the Seattle Seahawks, which would become one of several hurdles the Rams could not overcome.
During an interview with Kay Adams, running back Kyren Williams stated that he's been putting in more work as a returner during team activities – something Bubba Ventrone alluded to in camp.
"I've been catching a lot of punts in practice," said Williams. "I've been catching punts in OTAs, and so that's something that you know I kind of, that's who I am. I can do everything on the field. I can catch the ball. I can run the ball. I can block, and I can return punts.
"That's a standard I hold myself to. I want to be able to do anything that anybody asks for me to do. So if that's catch punch, shoot, I'm gonna go back there and catch some punch, make some plays happen, just to show you that my versatility is really real."

There is really nothing like the trade deadline in MLB. Yes, other leagues have an in-season deadline, and it can be a season defining moment for those leagues as well, but in Major League Baseball the ripple effect of a deadline deal could last for a decade or more. Teams at the deadline are basically debating between their ability to win a championship in the next two years vs. five years down the road.
Those are the stakes for every trade involving an All-Star level talent. But this year has at least the possibility of a trade that would hit the league like a tornado. The Detroit Tigers are currently 50-57, six games back in the A.L. Central and four games out of the Wild Card. Far from insurmountable, but with the amount of teams in their way it would be a heavy lift. It's been a letdown season for the Tigers who had World Series aspirations. Now they are faced with an organization defining decision. Should they trade arguably the best pitcher in baseball?
Tarik Skubal is a two-time Cy Young winner who is still four months away from turning 30-years old. He could, if healthy, be in his prime for at least another five seasons. That's five seasons of an ace who can lead a team through the postseason. That kind of pitcher isn't often available, and any trade would require an absolute haul of prospects and young talent in return. It would take an all-in move by a team ready to win now and not worried about depleting their Minor League organization.
On the other side of the coin, the Tigers aren't a team that looks to be in desperate need of a rebuild just yet. There is plenty of talent on that team in a division that feels gettable in the near future. But with the uncertainty looming next season, maybe the time is right to cash in?
For this week's MLB Reacts survey, we want to know if you think the Tigers WILL trade Skubal before this year's deadline. Get your answer's in quick and be on the lookout for results later this week!

Michigan Wolverines head coach Kyle Whittingham sees only one way for college football to sustain itself as NIL grows every year. The rise in NIL has fueled conference realignment rumors as everyone seeks individual interests over conference priorities.
In his conversation with ESPN's Rich Eisen on Monday, Whittingham suggested converting college football into a minor league addition to the NFL. This was the Wolverines head coach's response when asked how he would improve the current state of college football, where money disparity has become a major issue:
"I think it's got to be a NFL minor league model where we have a salary cap and the players are employees," Whittingham said. "I think, as distasteful as some of that is, I don't think there's any other way that's better than that. And, right now, it's out of control. We're going to have probably a dozen teams in the next recruiting cycle with $50 million rosters."
With the Big Ten and SEC hosting some of the best teams in college football over the past decade, Whittingham was fueling a "super conference" as an alternative to the current system.
"And there's such a disparity between the haves and the have-nots, I think the only way to get that evened out and level the playing field is to go ahead and pattern it after a minor league NFL model or 'super league' if you will. You'll probably see 48-60 teams survive the cut and be on the right side of the line in the sand and proceed forward," the head coach continued.

NFL rosters constantly evolve as general managers juggle injuries, try to improve position groups and add depth.
Teams enter training camp with a maximum of 90 players, who try to prove they belong on the 53-man active roster for the regular season.
But there are other roster designations that fill the NFL's transactions wire daily. What do they all mean?
Players are put on the reserve/injured list — commonly referred to as IR — when they have a football-related injury and need to miss at least a few weeks. Players on IR don't count against the active roster, but their salaries count against the cap.
If a player is placed on this list before the regular season begins, he could miss the entire season unless they are designated to return during the roster cutdown to 53 players after training camp. Teams can designate up to two such players to return.

Chicago — Conference realignment has thrown a wrench in many of college football's traditional rivalries. At least one Big Ten coach says he feels a new one brewing with Michigan.
Tuesday at Big Ten Media Days, USC head coach Lincoln Riley said that the past two season's games against Michigan have taken on the air of a rivalry. And though the Wolverines aren't on the schedule this season, he's looking forward to building more history with the Big Ten's traditional teams.
"This has got a little bit of juice behind it," Riley said. "Whether it's at the Big House or at the Coliseum, those two programs walk on the field, those two helmets walk on the field, it's like, ***** , you know. This is real. It's pretty cool, and I think everybody kind of feels that."
Michigan's Kalel Mullings ran in a 1-yard, fourth down touchdown with 37 seconds left to beat USC, 27-24, in a ranked clash at Michigan Stadium in 2024. The next year, USC pounded Michigan 31-13 in Los Angeles.
No, this quote-unquote rivalry isn't replacing the Battle for the Jeweled Shillelagh for Southern Cal, or surpassing The Game in importance for Michigan. The Trojans will always have beef with Notre Dame and UCLA — no matter what scheduling drama there may be with the Irish. And the Wolverines' rivals of Ohio State and Michigan State carry a certain regional animosity that is as hot as ever these days.

NWSL Week 13 saw an old storyline play out again, and the two sides involved end up top of table. Both expansion sides earned well-won victories, and Seattle will be wondering how they let a match get away from them. Racing Louisville were eyeing their first victory in a spell, only to see it vanish late.
The league's goal-scorers are doing what they are supposed to do, and new stars are emerging. Rose Lavelle brings the drama twice for Gotham, while Bay FC's Karlie Lema is making people take notice. Utah's terrific turnaround continues, and Portland stumbles again. In disheartening news, one of the league's young stars went down with a season-ending injury.
NWSL Week 13 featured joy, triumph, heartbreak and disappointment.
Gotham and Rose Lavelle have had Washington's number lately, and that number is 1-0. In last season's championship, the Gotham star scored late to give her side the ****** le. In the two team's latest meeting, Lavelle struck again for the only goal of the match.
This match was a highlight for the league this season. Gotham will be moving from New Jersey to the new Etihad Park in New York City in 2028, and this match showcased the new digs. To showcase what women's football can be in NYC, Gotham hosted the Spirit in front of more than 42,000 fans, the second largest regular-season crowd in NWSL history. While conditions were less than ideal, the teams put on a show for the fans in attendance.
