Moving on from top prospects before they debut in Major League Baseball is common, though we haven't seen the Boston Red Sox do that recently.
The Red Sox have given a lot of their young players a chance to prove whether they're legitimate players in the big leagues, but not all of them have worked out. One player who obviously didn't work out was Marcelo Mayer.
Mayer, who has dealt with some health struggles over his professional career, really hasn't been able to figure things out offensively in Boston.
Still, at just 23 years old, it felt like the Red Sox could look past his .220 average on the year with just three home runs, 22 RBIs and 205 at-bats.
