Patriots Offensive Coordinator Josh McDaniels Describes Team's 'All-Hands' Approach Without A.J. Brown originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Before the Patriots could get a feel for the impact A.J. Brown will have on their offense, they lost him to injury for weeks to come.
Brown will be out until at least Week 6 after being placed on IR on Friday, dealing with a high ankle sprain from his Week 1 exit vs. Seattle. Rather than bringing in any new receivers, it appears New England will be turning to some of its younger pass catchers to alleviate the offense.
Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels said Thursday on a radio show that the team will be taking "an all-hands-on-deck approach" to replacing Brown's production at wide receiver, which likely means more playing time for names like DeMario Douglas, Kyle Williams and Efton Chism III.
"Any injury that you get at this time of the season, you kind of approach it with an all-hands-on-deck approach," McDaniels said Thursday, per ESPN. "We got a lot of different skill guys that can do a lot of different things. There isn't one person on the roster that can replace anybody like A.J. -- in the middle of a game or a stretch of a season. So we'll band together and figure out what we can do well and then try to get guys in positions to play to their strengths."

Why Patriots' Schedule Could Complicate A.J. Brown's Timeline For Return From Injury originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The A.J. Brown era for the Patriots hasn't gotten a good start, with the wide receiver catching just three passes in a Week 1 loss before going down with a high ankle sprain.
Brown is set to miss a minimum of four games for New England, placed on IR on Friday, per ESPN. With Brown's injury expected to sideline him for around four weeks regardless, the Patriots decided to put him on IR, officially locking in that timeline.
Based on the four-week timeline, the earliest Brown could return is in Week 6 against the Jets, a Sunday afternoon game on Oct. 18. That will primarily depend on how his ankle heals — but New England's schedule could also make his return complicated.
Here's why the Patriots' schedule could throw off Brown's return, making it even longer before the star receiver is back on the field.

Red Sox Prospect's Season In Jeopardy After Unfortunate Injury originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Kristian Campbell's bid to return to the Boston Red Sox took an unfortunate turn with little time remaining in the minor league season. The Worcester Red Sox placed Campbell on the seven-day injured list Thursday because of a left foot contusion, according to MassLive's Chris Cotillo. Infielder Max Ferguson was promoted from Double-A Portland to fill the open roster spot.
Campbell reportedly had been dealing with a sore toe before leaving Tuesday's game against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs in the sixth inning. The timing makes the injury particularly frustrating. Worcester has only 10 games remaining before its season concludes Sept. 20, leaving Campbell with a limited window to return.
It also could eliminate whatever chance remained of Campbell joining Boston for its postseason push.
The 24-year-old has spent the entire 2026 campaign in Triple-A after struggling during his first major league opportunity. He batted .223 with a .664 OPS, six home runs and 21 RBIs across 67 games for the Red Sox in 2025. Campbell, once ranked as MLB Pipeline's No. 7 overall prospect, produced an encouraging opening month and earned American League Rookie of the Month honors after batting .301 with four home runs. His production dropped considerably afterward, however, and Boston optioned him to Worcester in June 2025.

Stephen A. Smith Calls Out Drake Maye and Romeo Doubs After Patriots Loss originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
With A.J. Brown expected to be out for the next four games, there is going to be a lot of focus on multiple players in New England's offense.
At the top of that list will be Romeo Doubs, who finished Wednesday night's game, his Patriots debut, with zero catches on three targets.
This was about as ugly of a start to the year as anybody could have imagined, though it's also important to recognize that it was just the first game of the season and Doubs will get more comfortable as the year goes on.
Despite that reality, it doesn't sound like Stephen A. Smith of ESPN is giving him much grace or time to figure things out. In fact, Smith had a lot to say about what could happen if Brown is injured, and none of it was very kind to Doubs.

Red Sox Seem to Make Franklin Arias Decision After Latest Report originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Right after Major League Baseball's trade deadline, there was a sense that the Boston Red Sox could have called up Franklin Arias. The idea of bringing up Arias would be simple: the Red Sox believed he could come in and make an impact, and if he did, they'd be a better team come playoff time.
Instead of that being the case, the Red Sox returned Trevor Story, allowing the veteran to come back and prove why he's one of the better shortstops in Major League Baseball.
Story hasn't been perfect since returning, but he's a guy who should be trusted.
As for Arias, it remains unclear what the Red Sox will do until something happens. However, according to the latest report, it doesn't look like Boston is going in that direction.

Patriots' Romeo Doubs Makes Promise to Fans After Rough Debut originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
It wasn't a great night for New England Patriots wide receiver Romeo Doubs, who finished with zero catches on three targets. Doubs, who the Patriots signed to a lucrative contract during the offseason, was expected to be the clear WR2, part of the reason why the Patriots moved on from Kayshon Boutte.
With A.J. Brown going down on Wednesday night during the Seattle Seahawks game, there was hope within Patriots fan circles that Doubs would step up in a major way. Instead of that being the case, he was just as bad as anybody could have imagined, and it was part of the reason why New England lost.
Instead of sugarcoating things after the game, it was positive to at least hear Doubs have some accountability for his play.
"No. Like I said, I just wasn't locked in enough on the football," Doubs said, per USA Today. "The results speak for themselves. I'll be better moving forward."

Red Sox Spent Last Week Getting House in 'Order' Regarding Injuries originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Boston Red Sox have given themselves a good chance to not only win a World Series, but also take things easy over the next couple of weeks.
The last thing the Red Sox want to do is deal with any more injuries than they already have, and at 80-67, they're likely not to win the American League East. With a six-game lead in the American League Wild Card race, there truly isn't a whole lot to worry about.
While we've seen some crazy things happen throughout the campaign, and the Red Sox can't guarantee that they're in the playoffs until things finish, they have to feel pretty good about where things stand.
According to the latest from their MLB.com writer, the Red Sox are spending the last couple of weeks of the regular season, and have already done so, by being smart and getting guys healthy.

Mike Vrabel Stands By Patriots' Preseason Decision After Week 1 Loss originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Mike Vrabel is not second-guessing how he prepared the New England Patriots for their season opener. The Patriots rested their starters throughout the preseason, creating questions about whether the lack of live game action contributed to Wednesday night's 13-10 loss to the Seattle Seahawks.
Vrabel firmly rejected that suggestion Thursday.
"Playing the backups for the Eagles or the Colts, I don't think was going to prepare us for what we saw last night," Vrabel said, according to NBC Sports Boston's Phil Perry.
The Patriots were not overwhelmed physically by Seattle. They led the defending Super Bowl champions 10-0 through three quarters and were in position to win despite losing star receiver A.J. Brown to an ankle injury. Everything changed during the final 15 minutes.

NFL Expert Predicts Patriots Regression After Super Bowl Run originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The New England Patriots transformed themselves from a rebuilding team into the AFC champion during Mike Vrabel's first season as head coach.
One national NFL expert does not expect them to reproduce that success in 2026.
Sporting News' Vinnie Iyer predicted New England will finish 10-7, surrender the AFC East to the Buffalo Bills and exit the playoffs in the divisional round.
That outcome would still represent a strong season for a team led by 24-year-old quarterback Drake Maye. It also would feel disappointing after the Patriots came within one victory of winning another Super Bowl.

Trevor Story's Blunt Message Helps Jarren Duran End Negative Spiral originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Jarren Duran changed his appearance before changing the direction of his September. The Boston Red Sox outfielder cut his signature long hair during the team's weekend series in Baltimore, dyed it blond and then delivered one of his best offensive performances in months.
Duran went 2-for-4 with a home run and a double in Boston's 5-2 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Monday at Fenway Park. His solo shot was his 20th home run of the season and helped the Red Sox extend their winning streak to five games.
The new look created plenty of attention. A direct message from Trevor Story might have been considerably more important.
Duran has openly acknowledged his frustration throughout a season that has not always matched his expectations. Story, whose locker has been located next to Duran's for years, eventually decided his teammate needed to hear a difficult truth.

Patriots' TreVeyon Henderson Concern Grows Before Seahawks Opener originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The New England Patriots may have to open their season without one of their most explosive offensive players. Running back TreVeyon Henderson missed his fourth consecutive practice Sunday because of an ankle injury. Henderson has not practiced since suffering the injury Aug. 24, according to Andrew Callahan of the Boston Herald.
New England listed Henderson as a non-participant on its official Sunday injury report. Defensive tackle Christian Barmore and offensive lineman Ben Brown also sat out because of knee injuries. The timing makes Henderson's continued absence especially concerning. The Patriots have only one more scheduled practice before traveling to Seattle for Wednesday night's season opener against the Seahawks.
Henderson has not officially been ruled out, but four straight missed practices leave New England facing an uncomfortable question: How will the Patriots divide their backfield responsibilities if he cannot play?
Rhamondre Stevenson already was expected to start. Henderson's potential absence, however, would remove the player best equipped to deliver an explosive run or turn a short reception into a major gain. Henderson rushed for 911 yards and nine touchdowns on 180 carries during his rookie season, according to Mike Reiss of ESPN. He averaged 5.1 yards per attempt and added a receiving touchdown.

Christian Gonzalez Delivers Telling Response To Patriots Trade Question originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The uncertainty surrounding Christian Gonzalez and the New England Patriots has grown enough that the star cornerback is now being asked directly about a possible trade.
Gonzalez did not indicate that he wants one. When asked Saturday whether he would request a trade amid his unresolved contract negotiations, Gonzalez offered a careful response that kept his immediate focus on New England.
"I'm here right now," Gonzalez said, per Patriots on CLNS. "I'll always be where my feet are and do what I gotta do."
That was not the sweeping declaration Patriots fans might have wanted to hear, but it also was not a threat or an attempt to force his way out of Foxboro. Gonzalez remains with the Patriots. He continues to practice. And despite his frustration with the lack of progress toward a long-term extension, the 24-year-old is publicly presenting himself as a member of the team.

Red Sox Make Notable Lineup Change For Friday Game Vs. Orioles originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Boston Red Sox will have Trevor Story back in the starting lineup Friday night as they attempt to secure another important road victory over the Baltimore Orioles. Boston revealed its lineup for the second game of the four-game series at Oriole Park at Camden Yards. Story will start at shortstop and bat eighth after sitting out Thursday's 6-5 victory.
Isiah Kiner-Falefa started at shortstop in the series opener but will move to the bench Friday. Story's return represents the only change to the batting order submitted by Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy. Ceddanne Rafaela remains out because of tightness in his right quadriceps. Rafaela is considered day-to-day, but his absence will extend to a second consecutive game. Eli White will start in center field and bat ninth.
Roman Anthony will lead off as Boston's designated hitter, followed by Mickey Gasper at first base. Adley Rutschman will catch and bat third one night after delivering his biggest performance since joining the Red Sox. Rutschman homered twice Thursday in his first game back at Camden Yards following the blockbuster trade that sent him from Baltimore to Boston on Aug. 3. His two solo shots helped the Red Sox capture the series opener and improve to 76-65.

Mike Vrabel Reveals Most Important Drake Maye Change Since Super Bowl originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Drake Maye's physical talent has never been difficult to identify.
The New England Patriots quarterback can attack every part of the field, create outside the pocket and turn a collapsing play into a significant gain. Those traits helped Maye develop into an MVP candidate and carry New England to the Super Bowl last season. Mike Vrabel, however, believes Maye's most important growth has occurred in areas that are much harder to see.
The Patriots head coach was asked Thursday to identify the biggest difference between the quarterback who walked off the field following New England's Super Bowl loss and the one preparing to face the Seattle Seahawks again.
Vrabel's answer focused on three qualities.

Red Sox Receive Encouraging Ceddanne Rafaela Update After Early Exit originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Boston Red Sox did not have many reasons to feel good after Wednesday's 8-3 loss to the Seattle Mariners, but the initial news on Ceddanne Rafaela appears encouraging. Rafaela was removed after the sixth inning because of quad tightness. Interim manager Chad Tracy indicated the move was precautionary, especially with the Red Sox trailing 8-1 at the time.
"Ceddanne Rafaela exited today with quad tightness," The Boston Globe's Tim Healey reported after speaking with Tracy. "He tried to keep playing, but in a blowout, the Red Sox decided it wasn't worth it."
Rafaela finished 1-for-3 before Eli White replaced him in center field. The fact that Rafaela attempted to remain in the game suggests Boston is not immediately anticipating an extended absence. He should still be considered day to day entering Thursday's series opener against the Baltimore Orioles.
Boston has already been forced to navigate several physical issues during a critical portion of its schedule. Willson Contreras recently landed on the injured list with a hamstring injury. Adley Rutschman has been dealing with a hyperextended right elbow, while Garrett Crochet is still working toward a return from his lat and shoulder issue.

The Boston Red Sox do not need Patrick Sandoval to be perfect Wednesday afternoon. They desperately need him to prevent the game from being decided before the middle innings.
Boston will send Sandoval to the mound for its series finale against the Seattle Mariners at Fenway Park after rookie Jedixson Paez allowed eight earned runs in Tuesday's 9-6 loss.
The defeat required the bullpen to cover 5 1/3 innings. It also dropped the Red Sox to 75-64, four games behind the New York Yankees for the top American League wild-card position.

Patriots Bring Back Familiar Lineman In Revealing Roster Move originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Ben Brown's separation from the New England Patriots lasted only a few days. New England brought the veteran offensive lineman back Tuesday as part of another round of roster changes.
Brown was released during final roster construction after dealing with an injury in the preseason. His return restores a trusted interior reserve who already knows New England's system and provides experience at multiple positions.
The Patriots also added rookie linebacker Erick Hunter to the active roster. The two signings filled their 53-man roster following an unusually active stretch of waiver claims, releases and practice-squad additions.
Brown's return might not create the attention of a major trade, but it addresses a practical concern.

Red Sox Rally Comes Too Late After Rookie Starter's Nightmare Outing originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Boston Red Sox nearly found another miracle against the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday night. This time, the hole was simply too deep. Boston scored four runs in the ninth inning and brought the tying run to the plate, but its comeback attempt ended with a 9-6 loss at Fenway Park.
The Red Sox collected 11 hits and received home runs from Mickey Gasper and Jahmai Jones. However, rookie starter Jedixson Paez allowed eight runs over 3 2/3 innings, leaving Boston to spend nearly the entire night chasing Seattle.
The loss dropped the Red Sox to 75-64 and evened the three-game series at one victory apiece.
Dominic Canzone opened the scoring with a solo home run in the first inning. Gasper immediately answered with a 404-foot solo shot in the bottom half, continuing his impressive production since returning from Triple-A Worcester.

Trevor Story's Blunt Message After Dramatic Red Sox Return Silences Rehab Concerns originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Trevor Story did not need much time to remind the Boston Red Sox what they had been missing. Playing in just his second Major League game since undergoing sports hernia surgery in May, Story delivered two critical hits and drove in three runs during Boston's thrilling 9-8 victory over the Seattle Mariners in 10 innings Monday night at Fenway Park.
His biggest swing came with the bases loaded, two outs and the score tied in the bottom of the 10th. Story worked the count full before driving a sinker from Cooper Criswell off the wall in left-center field, allowing Eli White to score the winning run. Story tossed his bat aside, removed his helmet and disappeared into a celebration with teammates near second base.
For a player who spent more than three months watching the Red Sox from a distance, the moment carried additional significance.
"It means a lot," Story said. "We've been watching from afar for a while, just supporting the boys and just thinking about the times that we can get back on the field and contribute."

Red Sox Get Major Bullpen Boost Before Doubleheader Against Yankees originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Boston Red Sox received an important reinforcement at exactly the right time.
Boston announced Saturday that right-handed reliever Garrett Whitlock was reinstated from the 15-day injured list. He will serve as the club's 27 players for its day-night doubleheader against the New York Yankees. Whitlock had been sidelined since Aug. 10 because of right elbow inflammation. He threw live batting practice Wednesday and came through the session without any issues, clearing the way for his return at Yankee Stadium. The timing could hardly be better for interim manager Chad Tracy.
Boston must cover at least 18 innings Saturday, with Game 1 beginning at 1:05 p.m. ET and the nightcap scheduled for 7:15 p.m. ET. Even the deepest bullpen can be stretched during a doubleheader, especially when the second game comes only a few hours after the first ends. Whitlock gives Tracy another proven late-inning option and reduces the likelihood that one of Boston's lower-leverage relievers will be forced into a critical spot.
The Red Sox are also calling up Raymond Burgos as the final player on the roster for the doubleheader.
