Above a Methodist church at the end of a row of terraced housing, north of Rochdale town centre, Craig Kirby's phone is buzzing as he opens the door to his gym. The 50-year-old's latest TikTok video has just crept over 85,000 views.
It shows a personal highlights reel from one of his amateur football matches, filmed from the touchline by wife Lindsay, with a caption explaining how Kirby finds **** e and time on the bobbly park pitch. "Fitness and movement off the ball are 90% of the game," the text adds.
Kirby smiles at the video going viral. It has racked up more than 340,000 views by the time of writing, but it is nothing new.
The one pinned to the top of his profile has been seen 2.9 million times. It's a compilation of him playing for Whitworth Valley against Old Rivingtonians on a drizzly January afternoon, a backdrop of rolling Lancashire hills and a kids' playground, a simple **** le of: "Well beaten today. Not bad for 50 though."
That is one of his earliest videos from the beginning of last season - since then he has continued to post regularly across TikTok and Instagram, where the midfielder's 'Football at 50' profile has about 30,000 followers on each.

I asked how low crude oil's price can go in a June 30, 2026, Barchart article, where I concluded with the following:
Significant changes in oil market dynamics and the U.S. desire to push inflation lower could send prices to lower lows in the $40-$50 per barrel range. The long-term chart highlights lower highs since 2008, and the current price action suggests oil will likely continue to make lower lows.
Crude Oil Prices Slip on Hopes Strait of Hormuz to Reopen
Ag Market Surge: What's Driving the Buying in Corn, Wheat, and Soybeans to Multi-Year Highs?
Nat-Gas Prices Jump on Hot US Temps and Expectations of a Smaller Storage Build

UFC Shanghai is less than 24 hours away …
It all goes down this weekend (Sat., Aug. 29, 2026), inside Shanghai Indoor Stadium in Shanghai, China. SHANGHAI, Aug 27 (Reuters) - Chinese technology conglomerate Huawei plans to expand its AI cooperation with local pharmaceutical firms into drug development and clinical practice, a senior executive said.
The move highlights Huawei's ambitions to gain a foothold in the fast-growing AI drug discovery market, where pharmaceutical companies are investing in modelling tools and automated laboratories to shorten development timelines and improve efficiency.
"As we further deepen our research into AI in the medical field, we'll have more collaboration and results emerging with pharmaceutical companies from drug manufacturing to clinical to final implementation," William Zhang, president of Huawei's healthcare business unit, told Reuters on Wednesday.
He said that Huawei had some existing collaborations in the area of clinical practice in hospitals and was exploring more opportunities, without further elaboration.
The projects now are mainly with domestic drugmakers, he said.

UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH) recently announced a major expansion of its child and family behavioral coaching program, extending access to 13 million commercial members. First launched in 2023, the program targets low-severity needs like mild anxiety, ADHD, and sleep issues through virtual sessions and 24/7 support. The move adds 5 million individuals at no cost to employers, reflecting a broader effort to catch mental health concerns early before they escalate into high-cost medical claims.
This expansion highlights an essential question: Is UnitedHealth's shift toward early clinical intervention and margin management enough to offset persistent cost inflation and Medicare Advantage headwinds?
UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH) delivered a strong Q2 2026 performance, beating expectations on both revenue and earnings as cost refinement and operational discipline supported profitability. Consolidated revenue reached $112.03 billion, exceeding the $110.85 billion ******* yst consensus, while adjusted EPS surged to $6.38, comfortably above the $4.90 estimate and up from $4.08 in the prior-year period. Net income totaled $5.48 billion, or $6.04 per share.
The company's medical benefit ratio (MCR) also improved significantly to 86.7% from 89.4% in Q2 2025, beating the 88.5% Wall Street estimate and indicating stronger premium capture relative to medical costs. Management also raised its full-year 2026 adjusted EPS guidance to $19.50–$20.00 from more than $18.25 while maintaining its revenue target above $439 billion.
Bulls highlight UnitedHealth's powerful multi-segment scale across insurance and Optum services. The deployment of $1.5 billion into artificial intelligence is already streamlining prior authorizations and mitigating fraud, waste, and abuse. Furthermore, Optum's reach into care delivery and pharmacy services diversifies revenue beyond traditional underwriting. Robust cash generation continues to support shareholder return, reinforced by expanded full-year profit targets.

Well, that was a bit of a damp squib of a "match one", wasn't it?
It was always going to be a bit "meh" for me, to be honest – I erroneously made arrangements to have lunch with some old friends on Saturday (family pals, not footy mates), which I was really looking forward to and enjoyed a lot, but I knew would probably overrun. Before a ball was kicked, I'd settled for maybe seeing some of the second half, and hopefully seeing us do well.
As it transpired, I failed as a so-called "fan" to greater depths than the lads did – I couldn't get any visibility of the match until about ten minutes from the end, when a family member shared a rather dodgy internet link. By the time that got working, I watched Jack Clarke bend it into the bottom corner (as we have seen him do so many times), and that was that.
After only seeing the tail end and watching us lose to an "ex", the whole weekend took a bit of a nosedive in terms of football feelings for me. I still haven't watched the highlights even now (Tuesday morning as I draft this), such has been the underlying indifference around the fixture and my disappointment.
But when I woke up yesterday morning, I thought I'd take a look at what this may mean based on last season's first matches… and while it's a bit of a mixed bag, it's far from the Armageddon some online bed-wetters have already made it out to be.

Nebraska, Florida, SMU, and Penn State took part in the first Spikes Under The Lights exhibition at AT&T Stadium. Each match was played best of three to 21 points, and all of the teams took home some money.
Florida and Penn State each took home $200,000 for playing in the exhibition.
SMU got $250,000 and the Huskers won $350,000.
The first match was a slow start for the Huskers, but once they got warmed up we saw the Nebraska we are used to seeing.
I have to admit, this match was a lot closer than I thought it would be. With Florida's down year last year, and eight transfers, I wasn't sure what to expect. What became obvious throughout the match was that Florida is going to make some waves this season.

Well, the good news is that Marquette women's soccer is unbeaten through five matches for the first time since 2007. The good news is that Marquette hasn't allowed a non-penalty kick goal yet this season. The good news is that freshman keeper Mia Hurd has three shutouts in five matches to start her career.
The bad news is that Marquette failed to score for the first time this season, and so they have to settle for a 0-0 draw with Milwaukee. The bad news is that the hundreds of Marquette freshmen who streamed down to the Valley for this match did not get to see the most thrilling example of competition with the two teams combining for just 21 shots in 90 minutes.
At least Marquette won the shots on goal battle 7-3, I guess?
Here's 90 seconds of highlights.
Up Next: Marquette is back in action on Sunday as they welcome Northern Illinois to Valley Fields. First kick is scheduled for 1pm Central, and ESPN+ will have the streaming broadcast. A 4-0 loss to Missouri on Thursday night dropped the Huskies to 1-2-1 on the season.

Chins up, everyone.
Unless the Royals winning streak had hit 25 games, they weren't going to make the playoffs. And so they fell 16 games short of it. So what? That was quite the enjoyable stretch of baseball, and despite losing last night, I'm looking forward to tonight's game.
Noah Cameron is back on the mound.
Cameron became one of the team's highlights last year when helped keep the season afloat. He struggled at the start of this season, but he's been incredible through his last six outings, five of them starts, one a long relief appearance. In those six outings, Cameron's tossed 42-and-2/3 innings, allowed just five earned runs, good for a 1.05 ERA and 2.31 FIP, as he's struck out 36 batters, hit one of them, walked only 12 batters, and surrendered 15 hits, none of which have left the yard.
The Royals went 3-3 in those games.

On August 13, Nektar Therapeutics (NASDAQ:NKTR) held its second-quarter earnings call and laid out where its lead drug candidate stands after years of development. Rezpegaldesleukin, known as rezpeg, is now enrolling patients in Phase 3 trials for two separate autoimmune conditions, atopic dermatitis and alopecia areata. Management framed the quarter around two numbers that matter most to investors right now: a $1.02 billion cash balance that provides a runway into 2028, and a drug program that finally has late-stage data on the calendar.
Nektar's Phase 3 program for atopic dermatitis, called ZENITH AD, began randomizing patients in July 2026 across two pivotal studies, each enrolling 510 adolescent and adult patients. A third study in patients who have already tried other treatments is set to start by the end of September 2026. Management expects top-line data from the first studies in mid-2028, with a Biologics License Application submission to follow in 2029 if results hold up. After an end-of-Phase 2 meeting with the FDA, Nektar also finalized a single registrational Phase 3 study for alopecia areata, called ZENITH AA, which will enroll 850 patients and use a SALT score of 20 or less at week 52, meaning 80% or more scalp hair coverage, as its primary endpoint.
The case for rezpeg goes beyond trial design. CEO Howard Robin noted that roughly 15 million people in the U.S. have moderate to severe atopic dermatitis, and fewer than 10% currently get a systemic therapy, leaving room for the market itself to grow. He also pointed out that about half of patients on IL-13 drugs such as Dupixent either stop responding or never respond at all. In alopecia areata, where JAK inhibitors carry boxed warnings that keep many dermatologists away, the market for approved treatments is still projected to reach $5 billion by 2033. Nektar's own market research found that 150 of 151 physicians surveyed preferred rezpeg's short-lived injection site reactions over the longer-lasting conjunctivitis tied to current options, a result management used to argue rezpeg could compete across first, second, and third-line patients.
None of this comes cheap. Nektar's operating loss widened to $42.3 million in the second quarter, up from $36.2 million a year earlier, and the net loss came in at $40.6 million, or $1.23 per share. Research and development spending is set to climb further, with full-year guidance now at $210 million to $230 million as the Phase 3 programs and manufacturing activities ramp up. The company's only revenue right now is $10.1 million in noncash royalty income, down from $11.2 million a year ago, and full-year revenue guidance tops out at $45 million. That gap between spending and revenue is why Nektar leaned on a public stock offering that raised $373.8 million in gross proceeds in April 2026, a move that keeps the lights on but also dilutes existing shareholders.

Alluvial Capital Management's Q2 2026 investor letter for the Alluvial Fund reported a 4.9% return, with a year-to-date increase to 8.0%. A copy of the letter can be downloaded here. While these results are acceptable, they are overshadowed by the impressive performance of small-cap and micro-cap stocks, particularly in AI and semiconductor sectors. The portfolio remains stable and focused on dependable cash flow producers, although it sometimes lags in momentum-driven markets. July showed improvement for Alluvial Fund as benchmarks declined. The author emphasizes the importance of a dependable investment strategy focused on solid cash flow producers, while expressing confidence that the portfolio's intrinsic value discount will lessen over time. The letter aims to communicate the fund's approach and highlights potential opportunities in overlooked sectors, urging a long-term investment perspective amidst current market trends. Also, check the fund's top five holdings to see its best picks in 2026.
In its Q2 2026 investor letter, Alluvial Fund highlighted Talen Energy Corporation (NASDAQ:TLN). Talen Energy Corporation (NASDAQ:TLN) is an independent power producer and infrastructure company that generates and sells electricity, capacity, and ancillary services. On August 26, 2026, Talen Energy Corporation (NASDAQ:TLN) closed at $306.29 per share, reflecting a market capitalization of $14.68 billion. Talen Energy Corporation (NASDAQ:TLN) posted a one-month return of -7.89%, while its shares lost 7.89% over the past 52 weeks.
Alluvial Fund stated the following regarding Talen Energy Corporation (NASDAQ:TLN) in its Q2 2026 investor letter:
"Talen Energy Corporation (NASDAQ:TLN) is another long-tenured Alluvial holding. We bought Talen out of bankruptcy and have watched Talen's management put on an absolute master class. Since emergence, Talen has bought back a huge quantity of shares at extremely low prices, sold some older, out-of-market **** ets, and reinvested in modern generation capacity at good prices. Today, the market tends to treat Talen as a proxy for AI and data centers: on "AI will take over the world" days, Talen shares soar; on "AI is in a bubble" days, Talen sinks. This dynamic makes Talen unusually tradable by Alluvial Fund standards. We have had success selling calls against our core position when optimism surges, and buying calls when pessimism seems close to peaking. Meanwhile, we keep our eyes on the underlying story: merchant power production, especially nuclear, is a different business than it was a decade ago. Demand for electricity is growing again after stagnating for a decade. The United States is structurally short of generation capacity. This translates to strong free cash flow for companies like Talen that have dispatchable generation capacity. Talen expects free cash flow per share to exceed $40 in 2028, a figure that appears achievable based on planned share buybacks and the ramp-up of the company's supply agreement

Amber Uhler spent years transforming her own life after a health wake-up call. Now, she is stepping onto the Miss USA stage to show that a crown can represent much more than a competition.
For years, pageants have often been reduced to a familiar image: the evening gown, the crown, the final question, and the winner's wave. But contestants like Amber Uhler show that the most meaningful parts of a pageant journey often happen long before the stage lights come on.
At 41, the Miss Michigan USA 2026 ***** leholder is the oldest contestant competing in this year's Miss USA field. She also brings a personal transformation story, telling PEOPLE that she once weighed nearly 300 pounds and later lost 170 pounds through diet and exercise.
But Uhler's journey is not defined by a number on a scale alone. Her path to the competition has included previous pageant victories, a major life change, and advocacy work focused on swim safety and childhood drowning prevention.
She is not simply competing for a ***** le. She brings years of experience, personal growth, and a story that reflects how pageants keep evolving.

In its Q2 2026 investor letter, Alluvial Fund highlighted Vistance Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ:VISN) as a newly added position. Vistance Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ:VISN) is a global provider of infrastructure solutions for communications, data center, and entertainment networks. On August 26, 2026, Vistance Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ:VISN) closed at $11.05 per share, reflecting a market capitalization of $2.55 billion. Vistance Networks, Inc. Alluvial Fund stated the following regarding Vistance Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ:VISN) in its Q2 2026 investor letter:

Vistance is now down to just one remaining operating ****** et, Aurora Networks, which manufactures equipment for cable networks like Comcast and Charter. It's not a wonderful business—results are lumpy and customer concentration is high—but it is not going away. Faced with relentless competition from fiber and wireless internet alternatives, cable operators have no choice but to continue to invest in speed and reliability upgrades. On the heels of this radical reduction in scale, I don't think Vistance stays independent. Management has gone from running an enterprise doing almost $7 billion in annual sales to one doing just $1 billion. Once it pays out the proceeds from its latest business sale, Vistance will have a market capitalization below $1 billion. As a newly-minted micro-cap company, it might as well be invisible. First came "9 to 5." Then came the business empire, rooted in the place Dolly Parton called home.
Parton, who died Tuesday, was instantly memorialized for her country music fame, glitzy glam and humanitarian touch. At The Old Mill Restaurant in East Tennessee, Tim Fulton was in his office, trying to gauge how many devotees would pour into Dollywood in the coming days.
His restaurant serves up corn grits, barbecue and blackberry cobbler in Sevier County, Tenn., the center of Parton's sparkly empire. Typically, the last weekend of August brings a bit of a lull – right after a popular Jeep expo and just before the Labor Day rush.
Now Parton was gone, a loss he said felt like mourning a family member. He looked up search traffic for flights to nearby Knoxville and expected hotel rooms to book up fast. Indeed, as of midday Wednesday, search interest for "dolly hotel" was up 650% over 24 hours, per Google Trends.
"It may unfortunately turn out to be more of a sad, busy weekend," Fulton said.

Reading have been drawn to play Brentford in the Carabao Cup third round and for fans, there are two very different responses to this draw…
There's the adult, mature, rational and level headed one… Excellent. We get to see an established Premier League team, from just 10 junctions down the M4, visiting the SCL stadium.
We've got some history against them and it should be a really good night out. Let's be grateful the tie's at home, so there won't be too much of a knock on to the following Saturday's league game.
This is a great opportunity to pit our wits against some of the very best players, under lights, at the newly refurbished SCL Stadium, and I'm already looking forward to it.
Then there's the more emotional, fearful and small minded one…. Boring.

The 2026 women's college volleyball season is getting started — Nebraska and Florida are set to go head-to-head under the lights at AT&T Stadium on Thursday.
Nebraska volleyball is no stranger to the spotlight. The Huskers are an absolute threat every year, yet the program hasn't lifted the championship trophy since 2017. In a new era with Dani Busboom-Kelly as head coach, and with many star players entering their senior year, it's now or never for Nebraska.
Florida has some history with the Huskers. Despite never having won a national **** le, the Gators were runners-up on multiple occasions, including 2017 when they fell to Nebraska 3-1. In this week's Closer Report, Mason Montgomery has been lights out for the Pirates in the second half. The Marlins lost Pete Fairbanks to the injured list just as he'd been pitching well. And Elvis Alvarado has quietly been great since the All-Star break, taking the lead for the closer role in Sacramento.

Kyle Busch's connection to Bristol Motor Speedway will be impossible to miss when NASCAR returns to Thunder Valley in September.
Bristol announced Wednesday that it will honor the late NASCAR champion during the Bass Pro Shops Night Race on Sept. 19 with a Lap 18 tribute, a nod to the No. 18 that became synonymous with Busch during the most successful stretch of his Cup Series career.
The tribute will extend well beyond a moment on the racetrack. Fans will receive commemorative yellow towels and be invited to wave them throughout Lap 18, creating what could become one of the most striking tributes to Busch since his death in May.
And when the field races beneath the lights, one particularly familiar sight will be back on the Bristol high banks.
Joe Gibbs Racing will bring Busch's familiar M&M's colors back to the track as part of the tribute.

Everton started their cup play against Preston North End after the 40 mile drive down the M58 and up the M6. David Moyes ended his playing career at Preston and also started his managerial career before Everton came looking for someone to save them from the drop in 2002. A lot has happened since then but what has not changed is the fact that neither team have won silverware since then and today was another step in that journey. On a purely selfish note, I am heading home to Liverpool in September and would love to see a round three match with the Mighty Blues playing under the lights!
David Moyes went with a strong side to take on Preston. Jarrad Branthwaite and Hayden Hackney were given the night off with Michael Keane and James Garner taking their places. A big surprise to see O'Brien on the bench. Tyler Dibling was given another chance to shine on the right wing with Ndiaye moving to his favoured left.
Everton advanced to the third round of the Carabao Cup following a dominant victory over Preston North End, highlighted by a clinical hat-trick from Thierno Barry. After a closely contested first half, Everton pushed forward and eventually forced Preston into submission.
The match began with a warm reception for former manager David Moyes, which set a lively atmosphere that energized the travelling Evertonians. While Preston looked to sit back in a resilient low block and strike on the counter-attack through Delano Burgzorg and Adam Armstrong, Everton safely neutralized those early threats. The Toffees dictated the tempo through key involvements from Iliman Ndiaye, Tyler Dibling, and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, despite initially struggling to breach Preston's crowded defensive line.
The deadlock was finally broken when Dewsbury-Hall lobbed a precise ball over the top to Vitaliy Mykolenko, who slid a low cross into the middle for Thierno Barry to tap past goalkeeper Nichols. The Evertonians were in full voice. "Oh, Tierno Barry, oh, Tierno Barry!"
