ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Parker Messick pitched six innings of one-run ball and Austin Hedges hit a two-run homer in the Cleveland Guardians' 4-2 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Monday night.
Jo Adell hit a go-ahead single for the Guardians against his former team. Messick (10-8) gave up three hits, struck out four and walked one while extending to nine his string of consecutive starts with two or fewer runs allowed.
Through 26 starts, the rookie left-hander has a 2.50 ERA with 156 strikeouts in 155 innings.
Colin Holderman struck out three of four batters in the seventh. Hunter Gaddis tossed a scoreless eighth and Cade Smith gave up a run in the ninth before earning his 34th save.
Cleveland won its fifth straight and pulled within 2 1/2 games of the first-place Chicago White Sox in the AL Central.

A very businesslike win for the Guardians tonight as they beat the Angels 5-2.
The Guardians scored early to give Parker Messick a small lead to work with, which has been rare of late for Cleveland's best pitcher and Cy Young/Rookie of the Year candidate.
Nathaniel "Knows What to Do With RISP" Lowe got a sacrifice fly in the third after a Kwan walk, Jose single and Jo Adell walk. Rocchio had flied out sharply to begin the inning and Angel Genao was putting up an excellent AB when Adell was caught in a rundown that ended with Jose getting tagged out at third.
Messick's only troublesome inning was the fourth where a single from Zach Neto and single from Mike Trout allowed a Moises Ballesteros single to drive in the Angels' only run to tie the game at 1. I am so impressed with how Messick never gets frustrated. He finds his center and gets himself out of trouble over and over.
Another Guardians newcomer got a hit with RISP when Adell got an RBI hit in the fifth to make it 2-1 Guardians.

The American League and The National League took the field at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia for the ninety-sixth All-Star Game. This is the fifth All-Star Game in history hosted in Philadelphia, and the first since 1996.
Speaking of the number five, the Atlanta Braves had five representatives on the NL All-Star roster. Drake Baldwin and Ozzie Albies were starters, while Matt Olson was a reserve. On the pitching side of things, Chris Sale and Raisel Iglesias were active for the game.
Small little side nugget, Braves legend Hank Aaron holds a tied for the record for most All-Star Games played with twenty-four. It should be noted that for part of his career they played two All-Star Games per year, but it is still a fun Braves stat.
The NL struggled mightily with their bats against the elite AL pitching. Other than the first inning the NL pitching did great as well. Let’s break down what each Braves player was able to accomplish in the game.

Parker Messick took a no-hit-bid into the sixth inning, Chase DeLauter slugged a two-run home run and the Cleveland Guardians cooled off the host Miami Marlins 3-2 on Friday night, July 10.
All-Star closer Cade Smith pitched a scoreless ninth, earning his major-league-best 28th save. It was the third time in three days that Smith pitched.
It was also DeLauter's 10th homer of the season — one less than team leader Angel Martinez, who hasn't played since June 13 because of a foot injury.
Messick (8-5) lasted six innings, allowing one hit, four walks and one run. The left-hander struck out just one batter, but he got 10 groundouts.

While this season hasn't exactly gone to plan, especially on offense, the pitching staff has been incredible. Parker Messick is a legitimate Cy Young candidate this season, and ESPN ****** yst Bradford Doolittle named Messick the "First-half MVP" this season.
However, in the same breath as calling Messick the team MVP, Doolittle also identified three relievers - Cade Smith, Colin Holderman, and Erick Sabrowski - as the "real" MVP.
"First-half MVP: Parker Messick (126 AXE). Messick has been fantastic," Doolittle writes. "... Still, the real MVP in Cleveland has been the high-leverage contingent of its bullpen, led by Cade Smith, Colin Holderman, and Erik Sabrowski."

The Milwaukee Brewers are looking for a sweep of the Cleveland Guardians on Thursday afternoon, as they’ll also look to lock up a 5-1 homestand against the Phillies and Guards.
After a closely fought 2-1 win in Tuesday’s series opener, the Brewer bats came alive last night to win 9-4 against Cleveland ace Gavin Williams. They’ll try to keep things rolling today in a matchup of rookie southpaws, with Shane Drohan getting the start opposite the Guardians’ Parker Messick.
Drohan, 27, is making his fifth start of the season and fourth consecutive appearance from the rotation. In those last three outings, he’s totaled 15 1/3 innings against the Giants, Rockies, and Phillies, allowing nine runs on 17 hits and three walks while striking out 16 in a pair of blowout victories and a high-scoring loss. For the season, he has a 3.59 ERA, 2.72 FIP, and 44 strikeouts over 42 2/3 innings.

Priester has had multiple rehab stints in the last two months, but he’s struggled with command, with a 15.75 ERA on 24 walks and 22 hits over just 16 innings over eight appearances.
