WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump reacted Wednesday to Republicans' midterm election losses by showing off the White House ballroom he's building as he demonstrated the kind of detached behavior that voters around the country said was a key reason they opted to punish his party.
In an extraordinary scene, Trump summoned reporters to the hulking construction site that he demolished the East Wing to make room for and the Republican president spoke for nearly 20 minutes about minute building details. He did not mention his party losing control of Congress after defeats in some of the country's deepest GOP strongholds, including Texas and South Carolina, or voter concerns about the high cost of living and federal corruption that helped cause the election losses.
"This has been a structure the likes of which has never been seen anywhere," Trump said, speaking into a microphone that sent loud feedback echoing around the cavernous ***** e.
He talked at length about how the ballroom would be the "safest place in Washington" upon completion, stretching five stories underground and featuring a cut of marble that he called "a vein that people have been after for 50 years."
"We have large staircases coming from the kitchen. If I put the kitchen on top, you would lose three walls, because a kitchen takes about 30% of the ***** e," Trump said of his choice to make the ballroom's kitchen subterranean.

Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young isn't playing at 100 percent. But that, based off the reactions from head coach Dave Canales and Young himself, doesn't seem to be too great of a concern—at least for now.
Young's knee issue, which he sustained back in the Week 3 loss to the Cleveland Browns, has kept his name on the injury report for the last handful of games. The effects of that problem seemed most obvious on Thursday night, throughout the Panthers' 27-19 loss to the Green Bay Packers.
With his offensive line failing to keep the pocket clean time and time again, Young—as he usually would—opted not to use his legs to extend plays. He was pressured on a career-high 22 dropbacks, and attempted zero scrambles.
Canales was asked if he thinks Young has been hampered by the injury.
"Maybe," he replied. "I would say that he certainly doesn't look like he's got that quick make-you-miss kind of deal. But he was able to create some **** e for himself.

Even when it was pretty, the Carolina Panthers offense kept finding ways to get ugly in Week 8.
Down 27-13 with just under 11 minutes left in Thursday night's matchup against the Green Bay Packers, the Panthers kept themselves alive. Carolina pieced together a gutsy 12-play, 70-yard drive that reached the end zone on an impressive catch-and-run by wideout Jalen **** er.
But instead of sending out kicker Ryan Fitzgerald to make it a seven-point game, head coach Dave Canales opted to go for two points. Although the failed attempt didn't ultimately matter, with the Panthers losing to that 27-19 score, Canales was asked about the questionable call afterwards.
"For me, it was about knowing what you're gonna do on the next one," he replied. "So, felt good about that one. We had a nice play that we really liked, based on what they were doing. Had an opportunity there in the back of the end zone. But unfortunately, had two guys in the same spot really going for the ball.

Fresh off the franchise's first World Series victory, the Milwaukee Brewers are reading to celebrate with all of Wisconsin. The Brewers' appearance at Lambeau was slightly spoiled by right fielder Sal Frelick, who joined ESPN's "Sportscenter" for an interview while on the bus to Green Bay. Frelick was candid about how the celebrations had been going since beating the Rays on Wednesday.
"It's been crazy. Not a lot of sleep, late night last night, early bus to the airport this morning. Just got back here to Milwaukee and now we're headed up north," Frelick said, panning to show his teammates, including the trophy-carting ace Jacob Misiorowski.

He moved to Edmonton to play hockey for Northern Alberta Xtreme U15. His older brother, Austin, opted to play for NAX's 18U team that season.
They billeted at the same Edmonton home, living in an unfinished basement. Their beds were three feet apart.
They shared a bedroom growing up in Macklin, Sask., but this was different.

In a rare Sunday hearing, a federal appeals court judge appointed by President Trump questioned how the Trump administration's request to intervene in California's ongoing midterm election in order to force state officials to set aside 20,000 ballots from voters whose citizenship it questions squares with the U.S. Constitution.
Judge Mark J. Bennett said that while the executive branch is "unhappy" with what California law requires for ensuring voters are citizens, the state has the right to determine the manner of its elections under the Elections Clause of the Constitution and Congress has not challenged that process, despite having the ability to do so.
"It seems to me that you want us to issue an injunction that is entirely inconsistent with the law the California Legislature has adopted pursuant to the Elections Clause," Bennett said. "How can we do that?"
Matthew Donnelly, a Justice Department attorney, said the Trump administration has good reason to believe those ballots are from ineligible noncitizen voters, and has the legal right under separate federal criminal law to challenge their tabulation until state officials can prove otherwise.
Donnelly said both federal criminal law and state election law bar noncitizen voters from casting ballots, but "the problem is that California isn't interested in enforcing that provision."

Shingles was never on Viola Davis' radar until she was left with "debilitating pain" one day. After dealing with the viral infection more than once, the EGOT winner, 61, is opening up to PEOPLE about her "unusual case" of shingles and how it completely changed her approach to aging.
"I was a new mom. I had just adopted my daughter. I was riding off of my Oscar nomination after The Help. So I was working, working, working, running myself into the ground," she recalls.
