When Christmas rolls around, my wife puts out a very small tree and some stuffed ornaments we bought a few years ago at Target. That's a pretty modest approach to decorating for the holidays compared to many of our neighbors.
At the house we just moved out of, some homes added tasteful lights, others opted for religious displays, and a few opted for a whole lot of inflatables. In some cases, the spending was significant, although many of the items were reused year after year.
Decorations are a small but meaningful part of holiday spending.
Americans planned to spend an average of $1,172 on travel, $632 on gifts, $351 on entertaining, and $227 on decorations, according to a BMO survey conducted before the 2024 holiday season.
Getting those items may be more of a challenge this year, as Gordon Companies, which runs a number of Christmas-themed websites and lists Target, Kohl's, Home Depot, Walmart, Amazon, Lowe's, and Michaels as retail partners, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

With this technology, Bloom Energy is targeting one of the biggest bottlenecks in the ongoing AI boom – securing large amounts of reliable power quickly and economically. If 800V DC becomes widely adopted across AI data centers, the company will benefit not only from the soaring power demand, but also from a broader shift in how that power is generated and delivered.
Bloom Energy pointed to Nvidia's planned adoption of 800V DC architecture beginning with Rubin Ultra and Kyber systems as an indication of where data center power infrastructure is heading. In its 2026 Mid-Year Data Center Power Report, Bloom claimed that data center leaders expect DC-based architectures to account for 58% of new deployments by 2030, potentially creating a significant market for technologies designed around direct-current power delivery.

NEW DELHI, Sept 12 (Reuters) - The BRICS group of nations unanimously adopted a ‌joint declaration on Saturday, expressing "deep concern" over the war ‌in the Middle East and urged maximum restraint, advocating for a "multilateral approach" that respects national viewpoints.
The declaration, adopted on the first day of the BRICS leaders' annual summit in New Delhi, comes at a time when U.S. and Iran have ‌resumed ****** -for-tat strikes ⁠against each other, after a pause in fighting for much of August.
The BRICS bloc includes ⁠both Iran and Washington-ally United Arab Emirates, which was expected to make clinching a joint statement consensus a particularly challenging task for host New Delhi.

American Heritage quarterback Neimann Lawrence plowed into the end zone on a two-point conversion in overtime to lead the Patriots to a 15-14 win over the Conquerors on Friday, Sept. 11.
The loss dropped Trinity (No. 3 Class 1A) to 2-2. Both losses — Ed White in the season opener and American Heritage — have come in overtime.
Unfortunately for the Conquerors, this one seems very self-inflicted. American Heritage (2-2, No. 1 Class 4A) twice lined up to kick a tying extra point but Trinity Christian had a pre-snap penalty both times. With the ball now at the 1-yard line, American Heritage coach Mike Smith opted to go for the win.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - An unorthodox pitching plan worked about as well as the Houston Astros could have hoped Friday. Their offense could not capitalize against another American League contender.
Junior Caminero cranked a walk-off, two-run home run against Bryan Abreu to send the Astros to a 3-1 loss in the opener of a series against the Tampa Bay Rays, who became the first American League team to clinch a spot in this year's playoff field. Houston, which entered the day with a three-game lead in the AL West, ended it with a 75-73 record.
Using an opener, three Astros pitchers combined to hold the Rays to two hits before the ninth inning. Jonathan Aranda hit a one-out double against Abreu. With first base open, the Astros opted to face Caminero, the AL home run leader, who crushed a first-pitch fastball 417 feet to ignite a celebration at Tropicana Field.
The Astros totaled nine hits. But they were 2-for-6 with runners in scoring position, with neither of the hits scoring a run, and stranded six men on base.

Investors hammered Cooper Companies (COO) on Thursday after the medtech's fiscal third-quarter sales lagged Wall Street's expectations, leading to a guidance cut.
Specifically, the CooperVision segment — which sells contact lenses — missed expectations by 4.5%, William Blair **** yst Steven Lichtman said in a report. The miss was due to destocking. Further, the company opted against selling its CooperSurgical business following a strategic review.
"The 'no sale' is a surprise after management highlighted prospective buyers on the last earnings call," he said. "With CVI (CooperVision) results also disappointing, the stock moves back into the penalty box."
On today's stock market, Cooper Companies shares toppled 14.7%, closing at 54.17. Shares are already trading well below their key moving averages, IBD MarketSurge charts show.
Cooper said it couldn't sell the surgical division due to competition for its implantable contraceptive, Paragard, an intrauterine device. After their first day off in September on Thursday, the Brewers will continue their stretch of NL Central foes as they'll host the Reds for three games in Milwaukee, the second time they'll see Cincinnati in the last two weeks, as the Reds took two of three in Cincy last weekend. The Brewers are coming off of a sweep of the Cubs to balloon their NL Central lead to 10 games over the rest of the pack, sitting at 91-56 with 15 games left. The Reds, who sit in last place, are 69-77 after being swept by the Dodgers to begin the week.
Since the last time these teams met, the Reds have activated right-hander Graham Ashcraft and third baseman Ke'Bryan Hayes from the IL, with left-hander Sam Moll designated for ******* ignment and utility man Edwin Arroyo optioned to Triple-A Louisville in the corresponding moves. The Brewers have only lost Grant Anderson, who was placed on the 15-day IL with biceps tendinitis. He was replaced on the active roster by Brandon Sproat, though Sproat was demoted once again on Thursday, with the corresponding move expected to be a recall of right-hander Garrett Stallings to shore up the bullpen. Jake Bauers is also continuing to deal with a variety of lower-body injuries, and the Brewers have opted to focus on managing the injuries rather than putting him on the IL.
Just to remind you of what these two teams bring to the table offensively and on the mound, here's a quick rundown of both squads.
Milwaukee is hitting .257/.339/.400 (.739 OPS ranks fourth), with 137 homers (last), 742 runs scored (third), and 143 steals (fourth). The Reds are hitting .230/.308/.398 (.706 OPS ranks 23rd), with 196 homers (fourth), 611 runs scored (25th), and 102 steals (11th).
On the mound, Milwaukee ranks second in the majors with a 3.56 team ERA, including a 3.63 starter ERA (fifth) and a 3.46 bullpen ERA (fifth). They've struck out 1,406 batters (second) over 1,312 2/3 innings. Cincinnati ranks 27th with a 4.73 team ERA, including a 4.78 starter ERA (27th) and a 4.68 bullpen ERA (25th). They've struck out 1,186 batters (20th) over 1,293 innings.

All summer, Stetson Bennett and Ty Simpson competed to be Matthew Stafford's backup under center. Bennett had the lead going into training camp and after playing well in practice and the preseason, he never let that lead go.
Sean McVay opted not to name a winner in that camp battle but on Thursday night, he was forced to make a decision. The Rams chose Bennett as their No. 2 quarterback, making Simpson a healthy scratch for the first game of the season.
McVay referred to Bennett and Simpson as 2A and 2B on the depth chart, despite listing Bennett as the No. 2 and Bennett third. It's no surprise that the Rams are going with Bennett behind Stafford, given his experience; this is his fourth year in the system.
Simpson played well in the preseason and training camp, making a strong case to win the backup job. However, Bennett is the safer choice because of how well he knows the offense. In the event that Stafford goes down, the Rams can feel confident that he'll operate the scheme and get the ball out on time to the proper receiver.
The Rams hope Bennett never has to see the field this season because if he does, it means Stafford got hurt. But for the time being, he's the No. 2 until Simpson overtakes him or something changes in the minds of the coaches.

Alex wore Saint Laurent Fall 2026, taking the cropped cable-knit sweater from the runway and giving it a much cleaner spin with wide-leg black trousers. I've been enjoying the collection's striped pieces on the red carpet, but I like that Alex didn't recreate the runway styling. The all-black palette puts the focus on the proportions, which is what makes this work for me.
Cassie opted for a Magda Butrym wool corset dress, and this is easily my favourite part of their couple's style moment. The precise darting and padded hips create that exaggerated hourglass silhouette the designer does so well, and you know I love a well-executed exaggerated silhouette.
The dress is so good that the shoes frustrate me even more. The bronze pointed-toe pumps with criss-cross ankle straps feel disconnected from the modernity of the silhouette. A pewter strappy sandal or mule would have been a much stronger finish and allowed the dress to have the final word.

After being passed over for roles because of her age, "The Drop" star Gail Bean is opening up about the ageism Black women face in Hollywood.
"Black don't crack" is one of the many phrases that pop culture has adopted to classify the graceful ways in which Black communities age. Now, while social media celebrates the ways Black women seem to age like fine wine, Hollywood seems to have a different standard when it comes to casting. During an appearance on "DMC with Na'im Lynn," "The Drop" actress Gail Bean revealed how her age has stopped her from getting roles.
"Let me tell you something. And we're not even really talking about the industry, but just to get into the industry, a deep, meaningful conversation piece that needs to happen when it comes to women and their age. I have been told this year alone for two projects that I was too old," Bean, 33, explained. "I was told I was too old to play Shantae, Snoop Dog's wife. I was told I was too old to play Storm [from X-Men]."
And while Lynn joked that Bean looks like a teenager, she explained: "They see my age online. And they're just like, 'Oh, no.' And the thing is, these are phenomenal casting directors. They do love me. They bring me in for way [more] other stuff. But, like, I was on the list literally two years ago for X-Men, for Marvel…as time passed, they're like, 'Yeah, no.'"
Bean continued, "I had such an emotional moment because it was like back-to-back within a month of being told no. And here's the thing. I'm okay with the no. It wasn't the no that hurt my feelings. It was the I'm too old that hurt my feelings."
