ZANESVILLE — It took only a few days into the season for River View to remind the Muskingum Valley League just good its golf team will be this season.
Junior Gavin Gress, a two-time state qualifier, fired a school-record 7-under-par 64 and the Black Bears shot a 284 to win by 34 shots at the MVL Preseason Tournament on Aug. 4 at par-71 Jaycees. The event counts for one-third of the season standings, along with dual matches and the MVL postseason tournament.
Gress' 7-under is believed to be a league record for 18 holes, but the Times Recorder had not confirmed that as of late Aug. 4.
The Bears, in the Big School Division, had three underclassmen shoot 73 or better — freshman Lucas Massa shot 70 and sophomores Clark Frischen had 73 and Colton Gress 77.

The mother and grandmother who were found dead along with four children inside an upstate New York apartment allegedly plotted the family's murder-suicide to escape reported abuse, investigators said Tuesday.
Mechanicville, New York, Police Department Chief William Rabbitt told reporters that after more than a month of collecting evidence, investigators had an apparent motive for Amy Steadman, 64, and her daughter Sarah Myers, 44.

Shrewsbury Town boss Gavin Cowan has asked the League Two club's supporters to be optimistic about the coming campaign.
They have had little to cheer in the past two seasons, other than fighting off a second successive relegation in the last campaign.
The Shrews picked up 27 points from 19 games after Cowan's appointment in January to preserve their EFL status.
And the former Brackley boss now believes they can afford to harbour hope after a "really positive pre-season".
"I'm asking them to be optimistic, I'm not trying to give any false promises, but there's a lot of hope out there when you see the types of players that we've got," he told BBC Radio Shropshire.

During the second quarter of the Indiana Fever's 108-100 loss to the Minnesota Lynx, Cunningham was guarding Minnesota forward Nia Coffey when Coffey turned and caught her in the face with an elbow.
Cunningham immediately fell to the floor and grabbed her face. Despite taking the most obvious contact during the sequence, the Fever guard was called for a defensive foul with 7:04 remaining in the quarter.
Once the replay reached social media, fans could not believe the call.

Dylan Larkin's future with the Detroit Red Wings remains uncertain, but one NHL ***** yst believes Steve Yzerman's departure has reopened the conversation.
Speaking on The Sheet with Jeff Marek, Red Wings writer Max Bultman said there is now a better chance of Larkin staying. However, he stressed that the next general manager must present a convincing plan to make Detroit competitive again.

CLEVELAND — Many of the unwritten rules of baseball can lead to some different viewpoints on situations depending on which dugout you're currently in, and from there, some rising tempers.
In the case of the Guardians and the Arizona Diamondbacks, it was an exchange of words following one of those unwritten rules, and the gray area of interpretation, that led to a bizarre, benches-clearing incident just as the game — a 5-0 Cleveland win — Sunday, Aug. 2 was entering a rain delay.
Guardians starter Gavin Williams entered the sixth inning with a perfect game bid in tact. Diamondbacks center fielder Tim Tawa led off the sixth inning, and during that at-bat attempted to lay down a bunt.
That's where you'll find some differing opinions on whether that violated an unwritten rule in baseball. Some believe that if a pitcher has a no-hitter or a perfect game going, it should be respected, and you have to earn that first hit. Put it in other words: trying to bunt to break up a perfect game bid is seen by some as cheap.
Others, though, see it as simply a team that's normally losing the game at the point trying to add base runners and win the game.

The Florida State Seminoles extended a scholarship offer to four-star offensive tackle Tyrie Davis-Winn back in June, becoming the latest school to enter the race for the blue-chip talent.
They have quickly become a factor in his recruitment and are set to host him on his first visit later this month. He is set to attend FSU's game against the New Mexico State Aggies on Aug. 29 in Doak Campbell Stadium, he told Gavin Hart of 247Sports. It will be FSU's first game of the season and will be the first of several visits for the Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania native.
He is also set to watch the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, Penn State Nittany Lions, Virginia Tech Hokies, and South Carolina Gamecocks play during the season. Davis-Winn made it clear to Hart that he is looking forward to his time in Tallahassee and meeting the coaching staff in person.
"Obviously, it's a great program," he said. "They've been recruiting me heavily to get down there, so I'd love to get down there, see the place and see the environment. They say they love my film and how I move. My parents want me to get down there to see the facilities, the environment and meet the coaching staff in person because I've never officially been down there yet. The Florida State Seminoles had to rely on their run game quite a bit in 2025 due to the inconsistency of former quarterback Tommy Castellanos. As a team, they racked up 2,624 yards in 12 games.
Running the ball well is something that FSU has done well under head coach Mike Norvell, who is back taking over play-calling duties. Rutgers fans have gotten accustomed to waiting until game week to learn who the starting quarterback will be.
Will that be the case once again? Maybe not.
Head coach Greg Schiano joined the Big Ten Network crew on Tuesday afternoon to discuss the upcoming season. He was asked about when the right time is to name a starting quarterback.
"You wish after that first scrimmage," Schiano said. "I think our first scrimmage is practice 12. But if it's not time yet, it's not time yet but it better be the week after. I don't want to go much more than that because right soon after that, you're getting into your first game prep for UMass."
This has become an annual tradition for Schiano and Rutgers. The exception came two years ago following the arrival of Athan Kaliakmanis. He was quickly named the starter, which gave Gavin Wimsatt the right amount of time to be able to transfer.

Chris Sale tied a season-high with 11 strikeouts and earned his 11th win of the season in the Atlanta Braves' 6-5 win over the San Diego Padres on Thursday.
Sale tallied three strikeouts in the first inning, but the Padres tagged him for a 3-0 lead in the second.
Gavin Sheets and Freddy Fermin led off the frame with consecutive singles. Fermin hit a weak pop-up to left field, but outfielder Mauricio Dubón lost the ball in the sun and allowed it to drop.
Sale then hit Jake Cronenworth with one out to load the bases and Fernando Tatis Jr. drew a walk to bring in San Diego's first run. Fermin and Cronenworth scored on a Luis Rengifo single.

Michael King deserved better than what he got. The San Diego Padres starter completed six innings and scattered five hits while allowing just one run to the Atlanta Braves. The Padres did nothing to support him on offense and his night ended with Atlanta holding onto a 1-0 lead. Jackson Merrill helped out in the top of the seventh inning with a solo home run to tie the game, but that was all the offense could muster in support of King.
San Diego and Atlanta entered the eighth inning with the teams still tied at 1-1. The Padres went down in order in the top of the eighth inning. Wandy Peralta took the mound in the bottom half of the frame and had a complete meltdown that saw the Braves score four runs on three hits with a walk in just 1/3 of an inning pitched. He was replaced on the mound by Randy Vasquez who had his own struggles over 2/3 of an inning as he allowed two more runs on four hits with a strikeout.
The six-run inning by the Braves set the stage for the Padres in the top of the ninth. The game appeared all but over before the San Diego offense suddenly came to life. Pinch-hitter Sung-Mun Song flied out to start the frame, but Xander Bogarts walked and Jake Cronenworth doubled to put runners at second and third. Gavin Sheets followed with an RBI-single to make the score, 7-2. Sheets advanced to second base on a wild-pitch and the Padres had runners at second and third with one out. Based on the recent success and only being down a run, those were the two batters the Padres would have wanted at the plate, neither of them were able to come through in a big moment.

Toronto Maple Leafs rookie Gavin McKenna has yet to play an NHL game, but expectations are rising already. NHL ******* yst Carlo Colaiacovo added to the excitement with a bold prediction ahead of the 2026-27 season.
Speaking on TSN 1050 Radio's "First Up," Colaiacovo was asked what was more likely. The choices were McKenna winning the Calder Trophy or Auston Matthews finishing among the NHL's top five goal scorers.
Matthews would likely need at least 45 goals to reach that mark. Speaking about which, Colaiacovo admitted he is not convinced that will happen despite believing the captain will improve.
"Let's just reflect on what last year's goal-scoring leaderboard looked like," Colaiacovo said. "Nathan MacKinnon finished with 53 and won the Rocket. Cole Caufield had 51, Connor McDavid had 48, and then there were four players tied at 45.

I thoroughly enjoyed Gavin and Andrew chatting on the pod after the Foundation of Light’s fixture release breakfast and chuckled when they said that all these matches were on a Saturday at 3pm – except they’re not. They’ll be all over the place. That got me thinking about the whole fixture-setting process and its impact on football supporters, which brings me to what may become a bit of a rant. When you get older, though, and your memory is still functioning (to a degree!), these are the inevitable musings on whether things were better back in the day.
A further impetus for these considerations was the fact that I slowly developed an increasing interest in local non-league football. For a while, I could only manage the occasional visit to the Stadium of Light or an away League Cup game, so I was persuaded to go along and watch Workington AFC (Workington Reds), which slowly became a bit of a habit. Life has changed now, and I can get across to the North East more regularly again, but I still go to watch the Reds whenever I can, don’t miss many home matches, and fit in the odd away day.
My reason for talking about non-league football is simple – fixtures are set in the summer and that is that, unless, of course, there is a cup clash or bad weather. I appreciate knowing that the match will kick off at 3pm on a Saturday or 7.45pm on a Tuesday.
And that is exactly how it used to be when I first started going to professional football – Roker Park at 3pm on a Saturday or 7.30pm on a Tuesday. It was even quite a change when evening games began to kick off 15 minutes later in the 1990s! The status quo was soon to change, although it might surprise some people that attempts were made back in the 1960s to show live football with altered kick-off times. Deals were struck, broken, and fans had to make do with highlights programmes instead.
Tyne Tees Television was actually the first regional broadcaster to show highlights (of North East football only) in 1962/63 in the programme Shoot. It aired on a Sunday afternoon. Sadly, I can still remember the theme tune.

It was even quite a change when evening games began to kick off 15 minutes later in the 1990s! The status quo was soon to change, although it might surprise some people that attempts were made back in the 1960s to show live football with altered kick-off times. Deals were struck, broken, and fans had to make do with highlights programmes instead.
Tyne Tees Television was actually the first regional broadcaster to show highlights (of North East football only) in 1962/63 in the programme Shoot. It aired on a Sunday afternoon. Sadly, I can still remember the theme tune.

For years, we've come to expect the MLB All-Star Game to feature players who have perennially been among the best in the sport. We become accustomed to seeing the same names fill out the rosters. Guys like Justin Verlander, Max Scherzer, Jacob deGrom, Chris Sale, Jose Altuve, Mike Trout, and more. While some of those names are still here in Philadelphia, it feels like we're witnessing a little bit of a changing of the guard, particularly amongst the starting pitchers.
This year's All-Star rosters had 26 first-time players selected, and 14 of the starting pitchers will be making their first or second appearance in the Midsummer Classic. Six of those starting pitchers (plus Paul Skenes, who is making his third appearance) are 26 years old or younger, and all of them, apart from Skenes, have made fewer than 35 career MLB starts. For comparison's sake, Chris Sale, who is also participating in the All-Star Game, has made 329 career starts (even with his litany of injuries).
"I think the game's changing, the game's getting younger," acknowledged Reds' starting pitcher Chase Burns, who is making his first career All-Star appearance. "I know it probably sucks to say that for older guys, but, you know, it's because of them that the game's gotten better."
That deference to the veterans was common amongst the young hurlers who were present at the All-Star game: "It's a good mix of older, veteran guys that we can learn from, and then a lot of hungry guys that are trying to make it back here every year and stay healthy," said Yankees' starter Cam Schlittler, who is also making his first All-Star appearance.
The "hungry" young guys that Schlittler talked about have been making their presence known this season. Among qualified starting pitchers, five of the top 10 starters in WAR are current All-Stars who are 26 years old or younger. Seven of the top 12 qualified starting pitchers in terms of strikeout rate are 26 years old or younger, including the Guardians' Gavin Williams and the Mets' Nolan McLean, who were not selected as All-Stars.

The MMCS All-Star senior league team advanced to the second round of the elimination bracket with a 10-0 win over DuBois in DuBois on Monday.
After going scoreless in the first inning, MMCS scored four of its 10 runs in the bottom of the second, with Greyson Stevenson, Konnor Mascitti, Jared Grubbs and Santino Trenga all scoring.
Colton Redden had two RBI for MMCS. Landen Klink struck out two over 3.2 innings, walking two and allowing four hits.
MMCS split its two games Sunday, defeating Chester Valley 6-2 in the first round before falling to Hanover Area 8-4 in the next round.
Against Chester Valley, Gavin Reynolds doubled and had two RBI, while Klink had a double and an RBI. Mason Potosky tripled.
