Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables had good things to say about Michigan quarterback Bryce Underwood after a 17-10 victory for Michigan over his Oklahoma Sooners. Underwood gashed Oklahoma for 87 yards on the ground, including a rushing score from 38 yards out.
"He's actually exactly who we thought he was," Venables said. "A really talented guy. He's big. He's strong. He's hard to get down one-on-one. He fell forward too often on the quarterback run game. He's got a great future in front of him."
This isn't the first time Venables has been highly complimentary of Underwood. Last year, he compared Underwood to Jacksonville Jaguars QB and former Clemson star Trevor Lawrence. And earlier this week, he said great things about Michigan's young QB even after he struggled against Western Michigan in the season opener.
"One of the most talented players at any position in all of college football. All of his best days are still in front of him," Venables said.
Saturday was certainly a good day for Underwood. Michigan was an underdog, and they weren't expected to win by virtually anyone, yet they did, albeit in a close game and one that Underwood threw for just 111 yards while completing 53% of his passes. Venables is as good a defensive game planner as there is in college football; therefore, his compliments of Underwood should hold some weight. Underwood's best days could be in front of him, as long as improvement continues for him and the Michigan team as a whole.

The NASCAR Cup Series circuit heads to the World Wide Technology Raceway, also known as Gateway, for the second race of the Cup Series Chase this weekend. Earlier this week, NASCAR released the full entry list for Sunday's Enjoy Illinois 300 as 36 drivers and teams are entered for the race.
Absent from this week's entry list are Corey Heim and Chad Finchum, who both raced in last Sunday's Cook Out Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway. Heim, the defending Craftsman Truck Series champion and two-time Cup winner in 2026, is on a part-time basis in the Cup Series for 23XI Racing in the No. 67 Toyota.

Titans offensive tackle JC Latham wants opposing teams to know they're not going to get away with any cheap shots on quarterback Cam Ward.
Latham said a big part of the offensive line coming together this offseason has been agreeing that they need to play with more fight, which will include going after any opponent who goes after Ward.
"Culture is what you stand for and what you allow," Latham said. "This offseason we all did a moment of self-reflecting of, we want to be the offensive line that we know we can be. We can't be no pushovers, we can't be **** ody's **** , just being completely honest. So all the late hits, all the extra stuff that defenses do, if we want to be what we know we can be, we can't stand for that."
Latham said the **** ans' new coaching staff has told the offensive linemen that they all have to have their teammates' backs.
"If any of us gets into it, we're all getting into it. We're all stepping up," he said. "You just can't go for no bullshit."

Britain's Gemma Stevens won the Burghley Horse Trials for the first time on Sunday, the biggest victory of her career on her 31st attempt at five-star level.
The 41-year-old Olympian, riding Chilli Knight, cemented victory in executing a faultless showjumping round to finish on her dressage score of 29.6 - the only rider in the field to do so.
Compatriot Katie Magee finished second on Treworra, with USA's Caroline Pamukcu and HSH Blake in third.
"It's only taken me 25 years and finally I've managed to win a big B [Burghley or Badminton]. I couldn't be more proud," Stevens said.
Stevens, who first competed at the level in 2007, previously rode Chilli Knight's mother, King's Gem.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Gavin Garcia rushed for 137 yards and three touchdowns as The Citadel beat Charlotte 43-41 in triple overtime on Saturday in the 49ers' season opener, following a 1-hour and 15-minute delay due to severe weather.
Garcia scored on runs of 2 and 1 yards in regulation before breaking a 25-yard touchdown run on the Bulldogs' first overtime possession.
Nick Billoups added 38 yards and two touchdowns, and Sebastien Boyle had 70 yards and a score as the Bulldogs rushed for 268 yards and six touchdowns combined.
Charlotte tied the game at 28 with 24 seconds remaining after Cole Gonzales found Jaylen Hampton for a 6-yard touchdown.

MUMBAI: Former India captain Diana Edulji feels it's time to appoint vice-captain and superstar batter Smriti Mandhana as captain of the Indian women's team "in all three formats of the game."
Mandhana became the leading run-getter in women's internationals, en route to her hundred (124) in the Women's Asia Cup 2026 on Thursday against Hong Kong in Dubai. She broke former Indian women's captain Mithali Raj's record of 10,868 runs. Mandhana also broke the record for most centuries (18) in international cricket, the most by any batter in the women's game, surpassing Meg Lanning and Laura Wolvaardt, who have 17 apiece. Mandhana has two hundreds in T20Is, two in Tests and 14 in ODIs. The elegant left-hander has 93 fifty-plus scores across formats in international cricket, the joint-most by any batter, alongside Raj.
It was also Mandhana's second T20I hundred, thus making the 30-year-old the first Indian woman to score multiple centuries in the shortest format of the game.
"I congratulate Smriti Mandhana on becoming the leading run-getter in women's internationals. I feel that it's high time that the national women's selection committee, led by Amita Sharma, appoints Smriti as the new captain in all three formats of the game. Harmanpreet Kaur can continue to play as a senior player in the side," Edulji said while talking to TOI.
Explaining the reasoning behind seeking a transition in captaincy, Edulji said, "All I'm saying is that Harman is already in her late 30s (37). When would you want her to give up the captaincy and give it to Smriti, who has just entered her 30s (30). I don't want Harman to be dropped from the Indian team. I've no ill-feeling towards her. She's still a great player, but I think Harman should be relieved of the captaincy pressure, and left to just concentrate on her batting, because runs aren't coming off her bat. Harman's form is crucial for our team to win more championships. This move will increase her time span in the India XI. It's very important that someone scores runs in the middle order, because we can't keep depending on our openers all the time. So, I think that this is the right time for Smriti to take over the India captaincy. Her confidence and skill level are high right now. And let Smriti take it forward from here, so that she has a long run (as a captain) then. At least give her white-ball captaincy for now, and maybe Harman can continue as a Test captain."

Cox Media Group (CMG) Jacksonville and the Tampa Bay Lightning on Wednesday announced a new local broadcast partnership, naming Action Sports Jax TV the team's official broadcast partner in Northeast Florida beginning this season (2026-27).
The addition builds on Action Sports Jax TV's fast-growing sports lineup. The channel is already the Official Station of the Jacksonville Jaguars and carries every Orlando Magic game under a new multi-year NBA partnership — making WJAX-TV 47.2 one of the most sports-rich, free over-the-air channels in the Southeast.
Under the new agreement, all locally distributed Tampa Bay Lightning regular-season games — apart from national exclusives — will air on Action Sports Jax TV (WJAX-TV 47.2), with select games also airing on CBS47 and FOX30.
This new partnership will bring Tampa Bay Lightning hockey games free to households throughout Northeast Florida.

The Cleveland Browns faced several difficult decisions as they trimmed their roster down to 53 players. Every season, the organization makes a few decisions that catch fans by surprise. Which selections at this year's deadline were particularly surprising?
Taylen Green was far from a lock to make the roster throughout the summer. As training camp came to a close and Green took some snaps in the preseason, he proved to the front office and coaching staff that he deserved a roster spot.
Dillon Gabriel was questionable to make the roster because of the fact that keeping four quarterbacks seemed like a bit too much. After a strong third preseason performance, the belief was that the Browns would either find a trade partner for Gabriel, or that he'd make the final roster outright. Instead, a curveball was thrown when he landed on injured reserve with a "back injury."
Luke Floriea not making the 53-man roster was a bit of a surprise, but it is an even bigger surprise that the team does not intend to bring him back to the practice squad. The wide receiver group was certainly more competitive this season, so it was going to be tough for Floriea to make it in that group. Most felt Floriea did enough during the preseason to earn a spot with the team in some capacity, making the decision not to add him to the practice squad all the more surprising.

Football wrapped up Week 2 last week, with Pensacola Catholic delivering a statement win over Pace and four more area teams moving to 2-0.
Golf returned this week as well, with defending District 1-3A champion Tate starting their season with a win over Jay and Escambia, while defending District 1-1A champion Pensacola Catholic narrowly won a quad with Pace, Gulf Breeze and Milton to kick off its season.
More than half the area's cross country teams competed at the Pine Forest Eagle Invitational, with Pensacola Christian leading the area with a third place finish.
That means plenty of nominees for this week's Florida Power & Light PNJ Boys Athlete of the Week. Jay football's Jaymes Youngblood brought home the first award for 2026-27, winning 74.7 percent of the vote.

The roster for the 2026 Motocross of Nations Team USA roster was announced on Press Day for the Pro Motocross finale at Ironman Raceway, and it features Chance Hymas in the MXGP class, Levi Kitchen in MX2, and the veteran Cooper Webb in the Open class.
"They're going to do a great job," said Mike Pelletier, Director of Racing. "I think these three bleed red, white and blue, to be honest with you. And they've been pounding on the door for a long time. They've been riding great this season. It's time to show them what the world knows again in France."

Duke football has named its starting quarterback for the 2026 season.
Walker Eget was named as the Blue Devils' starter on Tuesday, Aug. 25. The sixth-year San José State transfer won the starting job over redshirt freshman Dan Mahan.
ESPN's Pete Thamel was first to report the news, with a source confirming it to the Fayetteville Observer.
Eget brings two years of starting experience after five seasons at San José State. The 6-foot-3, 235-pound signal-caller out of Santa Clarita, California, threw for 5,563 yards and 30 touchdowns in 18 starts. He was named as one of six ACC quarterbacks to the 2026 Manning Award Preseason Watch List on Monday, Aug. 24.

For the second straight preseason contest, the Carolina Panthers decided to roll out their starters for a little action. But not all of the first-stringers got out on the field at EverBank Stadium on Friday.
Outside linebacker Jaelan Phillips, inside linebacker Devin Lloyd and wide receiver Xavier Legette were among the 12 Panthers who were ruled out prior to kickoff against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Head coach Dave Canales, following his team's 34-17 win, would explain why.
"There were a few guys who had some soreness. We were gonna be sensitive with some of those guys—particularly Jaelan Phillips, Devin Lloyd," Canales told reporters. "Felt great finishing after the [joint] practice, but had a couple of other things sore. We just decided to hold them out."
Canales was then asked about Legette—who, along with his civilians, was sporting a boot on his right foot.
"He got his ankle twisted up. He has some soreness in his foot," he replied. "So, we evaluated him. Right now, we're just gonna get him back going little by little. And hopefully, we'll see him at the end of this week.

An Alabama jury determined on Thursday, August 20 that former Alabama men's basketball player Kai Spears was defamed by The New York Times for an article that inaccurately linked him to the scene of a fatal shooting.
As part of the ruling, which came after five hours of deliberation and two weeks of testimony in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Alabama, Spears was awarded $9.25 million in damages.

The petition with the hashtag InfantinOut also calls for "FIFA to be rebuilt so that the current debacle can never happen again."

The kings of the Greater Catholic League Co-Ed captured a share of an eighth consecutive league ***** le last season. Two entire graduating classes – 2022 and 2025 – with no crossovers between them were both able to make their way through all four years winning league ***** les each year.
Those are lofty expectations for the newest set of incoming freshmen this year.
"Every year we lose some good players from last year," head coach Nick Yordy said. "But some of the guys that we did lose, these younger guys are really taking advantage of an opportunity to step up and get out on the field on a Friday night and go out there and try to win some football games."
That's not to say Badin will be made up of underclassmen as it does have several returning juniors and seniors, but the amount of seniors lost as Yordy indicated does leave many questions for the Rams to answer this year.

Ex-NFL star and current **** yst Brian Baldinger thoroughly enjoyed Ty Simpson's preseason debut against the Chiefs. Baldinger pointed to the second quarter as the moment the offense found its rhythm under the Los Angeles Rams rookie quarterback.
Baldinger walked through a string of bootleg plays where Simpson hit tight ends and receivers. He noted a shotgun snap that showed off some arm strength, then pointed to a staple of Sean McVay's offense.
"It was very simple," Baldinger said, complimentarily. "... This is just the Rams. Let's fake the bubble screen over here, and we'll throw the spot screen over here. And we'll just let [the back] score the touchdown, one of two touchdown throws on the day."

Not everything went well for the Washington Commanders on Friday night.
Yes, the Commanders defeated the Dolphins 20-7 at Northwest Stadium. Yes, the Commanders were clearly the better team on the field during quarters two, three, and four. However, that first quarter wasn't a thing of beauty. That first quarter actually raised some eyebrows and questions for Commanders fans.
Good grief, the Dolphins put themselves in a hole to start the game when they held on the opening kickoff, so their possession began at their own seven-yard line. The Dolphins then drove 93 yards in 14 plays and seven minutes, putting the ball in the end zone. What was frustrating about the drive was that the Commanders had some players out there, like Johnny Newton, who weren't doing their jobs effectively.
Newton was drafted with the No. 36 overall selection in the 2024 NFL Draft, and he really needs to step it up and justify his being selected as high as he was. The Dolphins, meanwhile, appeared to really push around Newton and the defensive linemen as a whole on that initial drive. On the drive, the Dolphins had runs of 5, 14, 5, 6, 7, 6, 3, 1, and 1 yard (touchdown).

The calendar has flipped to August. Which means we're in the dog days of the NBA's year-round calendar. Little will happen over the next two months as teams across the league prepare for the 2026-27 season. Before we move on, though, let's reflect one last time on last year.
The Oklahoma City Thunder had a league-best 64-18 regular-season record. Juggling injuries all year, they overcame notable absences all year. Alas, they fell short of a second NBA championship with a 2026 Western Conference Finals exit.
To reflect on their 2025-26 season, Thunder Wire will conduct player grades for all 20 players who suited up for them this past year. Fifteenth up is Brooks Barnhizer, who returns on a two-way deal:
This is the top goal for any two-way player. The Thunder currently have an open standard roster spot. Barnhizer will try to fill that vacancy. He's the sole returning player from last year's two-way group. That means OKC must like him enough to think he has a chance to become an NBA player.
Let's see if Barnhizer forces the issue. Two-way players are allowed to be active for 50 regular-season games. They must be converted to a standard deal to be playoff-eligible. The Thunder have a recent history of converting players they like to meet that threshold. But to be honest, he has quite the uphill battle to join that list.

As of yet unable to convince La Liga rivals Atlético Madrid to part with star frontman Julián Alvarez, Deco and co. have been left with little choice but to broaden their search.
The name of the aforementioned Suárez – fresh off a 38-goal season in Portugal – has in turn emerged as the latest tipped to fill the gaping hole in Hansi Flick's frontline.
