Two Premier League matches at Anfield. Two draws.
For just the third time in 63 years, Liverpool have failed to win both of their opening home games of a league season - not exactly the flying start new boss Andoni Iraola would have been dreaming of.
After such an encouraging midweek performance against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League, full of urgency, Saturday's goalless draw against Fulham was a flat follow-up, especially with the Cottagers lacking in confidence and having conceded seven goals in their first three league games.
The Reds looked physically and mentally tired and, to put it bluntly, like an entirely different team to the one that won against a Diego Simeone side that made it to the Champions League semi-finals last season.
On the first real look at how Iraola's style will cope with two games a week, this was certainly not what the Liverpool head coach, nor the Anfield crowd, would have wanted to see.

Leading members of the first-team ranks at La Liga's two headline clubs have secured for themselves respective places in the first Champions League Team of the Season.
This of course comes fresh off the opening round of fixtures in European football's premiere club competition being brought to a close on Thursday night.
Both Barcelona and Real Madrid managed opening day victories, the former at the expense of Feyenoord, and the latter Inter Milan.
Leading the way with a brace for Hansi Flick's Blaugrana was the in-form Raphinha, enough for the Brazilian to clinch a spot amongst the attackers in the Team of the Week.
For Real Madrid, meanwhile, it was a performance at the other end of the pitch which proved enough for a spot amongst UEFA's coveted XI, after Thibaut Courtois conjured up a whole host of brilliant saves to hold Inter at bay.

With the NHL season just around the corner, the Detroit Red Wings are entering training camp with major questions surrounding one of their biggest names.
The Red Wings announced Friday that Dylan Larkin will report to training camp next week, despite requesting a trade during the offseason. However, the 30-year-old forward will no longer serve as Detroit's captain, leaving his long-term future with the franchise uncertain.

Tyrone All-Ireland winner Conor Meyler said his concern over the planned merger of the GAA, Camogie ******* ociation and Ladies Gaelic Football ******* ociation [LGFA] is that the issue "is going to be thrown to the wayside again".
In February 2024, the three bodies announced plans to merge into one organisation by 2027.
However, in recent days, chairperson of the Steering Group Dr Mary McAleese stepped down, while a recent letter sent by the GAA's Integration Committee said it could no longer commit to that timeline.
"I don't doubt her [McAleese's] ability and leadership in any stretch," Meyler told BBC Sport NI's Mark Sidebottom.
"I just don't think she surrounded herself with the right board composition to actually get it done or she didn't have the power in the position to actually get things done within the three ******* ociations that she wanted and that's probably really disappointing because I know she was wholeheartedly going into this trying to make it happen.

In front of a packed house at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, the Florida Gators routed the FAU Owls 66-21 in the teams' season opener.
The Gators have struggled the past four seasons, all of them ending with losing records. In 2025, the team finished 4-8, and coach Billy Napier was fired in October.
Changes had to be made in the offseason, and they were. Florida brought in new head coach Jon Sumrall, who's credited for quick turnarounds at Troy and Tulane, turning them into winning teams.
Out goes quarterback DJ Lagway to Baylor and in comes Aaron Philo, a transfer from Georgia Tech who threw for 373 yards in his only start against Gardner-Webb in 2025.
FAU came into this game being ranked No. 1 in the nation in passing offense last season, averaging 340.2 yards per game. Their defense, however, was ranked near the bottom, giving up 36.3 points per game. History wasn't on the Owls' side either as they've never won a game against the Gators, 0-4 all-time.

Crystal Palace boss Pierre Sage admitted he was unhappy with his side's defensive display despite their 3-2 victory over Fulham.
Palace secured all three points in a closely fought contest thanks to a double from Tyrick Mitchell and winner from substitute Ben Chilwell.
But Sage acknowledged Fulham had enough chances to win the game and believes his side have plenty to improve on.
"The result is positive but I am aware of the game, but sometimes it is like this, you have to take the points," Sage said.
"We didn't play as we expected, I'm happy but disappointed for the other team and the coach because they had opportunities [to win] too.

Drone operators have been warned not to fly them during the Tour of Britain cycle race.
Stage three of the event will pass through East Yorkshire on Friday and a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) order has been issued prohibiting flying over the county up to an altitude of 2,700 ft (823m).
It means that permission to fly in the area between 08:45 and 15:45 BST needs to be obtained from Humberside Police.
The force said the ban was "to maximise safety to the public and other aircraft which will be operating" including police drones and media filming from the air.
The 565-mile (910km) long race began in Lincoln on Wednesday. The second stage will run from Boston to Skegness via Horncastle, Louth and the Lincolnshire coast later.

The biggest question facing the Carolina Panthers going into the 2026 season is how much quarterback Bryce Young will improve compared to last season. On the other side of the ball, the big unanswered question is if their pass rush can finally claw their way out of the NFL's basement after a bottom-five finish in sacks three years running.
To their credit, the Panthers went out of their way to improve their defensive front seven in free agency, signing edge rusher Jaelan Phillips and linebacker Devin Lloyd, a great pass rusher for his position, to huge deals.
Now, can defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero get this group up to a respectable level in the all-important pass-rushing category? That's what The Atheltic's NFL ***** yst Robert Mays will be watching for in the first month of the season:
Is Jaelan Phillips enough to take that pass rush from a team that finished 32nd when rushing four to a unit that feels dangerous? Because that's about more than individual talent, and he really is the only guy you're adding back into that. Turk Wharton is still hurt. You lose Nic Scourton before the season. There are some teams that even if they don't have the horses pass-rush wise, the plan feels dynamic.
Wharton didn't do much in this department last year even when he was on the field, but losing Scourton for the season is an undeniably painful blow to the Panthers' front. As of yet, they haven't added a dynamic option to replace him on the edge, leaving a lot of pressure on Pat Jones II and Princely Umanmielen to step up at the spot opposite Phillips.

As we inch closer and closer to fall (you already took a sip of a Pumpkin Spice something, I know it), we can feel the optimism spreading within the basketball world.
The offseason is full of transactions, moves to improve, and swings to make things … fit. That's the key word. Context, opportunity and how a new acquisition works within what a team does will end up defining how well a transaction ends up being.
It's easy to view moves in a vacuum. Teams need to acquire talent to fit a need, talent needs an opportunity to work, etc. But my curiosity always forces me to dig a little deeper: Maybe adding this player did not address every weakness a team has, but how did it make them stronger? What can teams do with these additions that they could not do last year?
So with that in mind, I present to you my six pack of underrated fits with NBA training camps opening later this month.
This is less about Klay Thompson returning to All-Star form, less about Klay being Ray Allen to Miami 2.0, and more about the fit between the human, the player and the franchise. It's clear Thompson wants to compete at a high level, and the Heat are always going to work to compete at a high level, especially after cashing in their chips to get Giannis Antetokounmpo. Erik Spoelstra has a knack for understanding his roster, knowing where his team needs to go and getting the most out of his roster. It feels like a natural meeting of the minds.

Former Indiana State Sycamore standout Johnathan Edwards was among the final 53 players on the Indianapolis Colts season-opening roster, announced Sunday night at the NFL's 6 p.m. deadline.
Edwards was one of five cornerbacks listed on the roster, as reported by Colts.com. He joins Sauce Gardner, Jaylon Jones, Justin Walley, Charvarius Ward Sr.
This will be Edwards' second season with the Colts. Last season, Edwards played in 14 games for Indianapolis, starting five of those. Edwards compiled 26 total tackles, including 19 solos and seven ****** ists. The 6-foot-1, 201-pound Edwards, now 24 years old, played at ISU from 2021-23 and then at Tulane in 2024.
The Colts on Sunday made a flurry of transactions to trim their roster to 53 players ahead of Sunday's 6 p.m. deadline.
The roster may change in the coming days, as any waiver claims the Colts are awarded from Sunday's initial round of league-wide cuts will be processed Monday, according to the Colts.com report.

As training camp and the 2026-27 NBA season slowly approach, it is time to start taking a look at what each member of the Los Angeles Lakers should be working on this summer and how each of them can help the team be as successful as it can be.
Therefore, LeBron Wire is outlining three goals for each Lakers player this coming season.
Forward Arthur Kaluma, who went undrafted out of the University of Texas a year ago, was with the Lakers' G League affiliate last season. But after an impressive showing in July's summer league, he earned himself a two-way contract. Now he has an opportunity to perhaps earn some playing time and perhaps even break into coach JJ Redick's rotation at some point, especially if he accomplishes these three goals.
During the G League tip-off tournament and regular season last year, Kaluma shot 37.8% from 3-point range while taking 3.7 3-point attempts in 24.4 minutes a game. In the main Las Vegas summer league, he shot 50% from downtown on a high volume of attempts while averaging 18.6 points a game.
Redick values players who can hit from the outside and provide overall offense, and if Kaluma does that at the NBA level, he will give Redick a different decision to make as far as divying up minutes and figuring out his depth chart at the wing and forward spots.

Everton have called off a proposed deal to sell midfielder Harrison Armstrong to Nottingham Forest following a backlash from the club's supporters.

Although the Friday night lights went out on them at Heroes Stadium on Friday, Johnson and Judson plan to use the quarter and half they managed to play to good use.
That's all they can do after their season opener was canceled when a storm rolled through in the middle of the second quarter. It began with a lightning delay at 8:10 p.m., followed by strong winds and pouring rain before the electricity went out about an hour later.
The lights were still out at 9:30 p.m. when the game was called. The non-district game won't be completed. Although Johnson led 7-0 when the game was stopped, it doesn't count as a result because it didn't go a full half.
This wasn't exactly the way Vernon Hughes envisioned his highly anticipated coaching debut at Judson to be. Hughes is tasked with restoring the glory of Judson football, which hasn't had a winning record in five seasons, tied with the longest stretch in program history.
Hughes is making the most of the unusual situation.

Last year was a tough one for top-end tight ends, as both George Kittle, Tucker Kraft and Brock Bowers had injury trouble that derailed their fantasy seasons. That left Tre McBride to pick up the slack, catching a crazy 126 passes to set the NFL record for receptions in a season. At this point there is a real chance all three of those injured stud tight ends might be available for Week 1!
We had some fresh talent infuse the tight end position last season, with three rookies putting up strong numbers. Tyler Warren, Colston Loveland, and Harold Fannin Jr. all proved their fantasy worth and look to build on their strong rookie campaigns. It's nice to have those guys added to what is usually a pretty shallow pool of top fantasy tight ends.
In twelve team leagues that start one tight end, there are often not enough capable fantasy tight ends to go around. This year I'd be happy with eleven of this group being my starter. And since we can wait longer to pick up a TE starter we like, we don't have to waste a second or third round pick on a stud.
Kittle ruptured his Achilles in 2026 and is trying to play in Week 1 of the 2026 season at the age of 33! The odds are stacked against him, but I wouldn't put it past him to have yet another strong year in Kyle Shanahan's offense. We get a discount on him this season, but for good reason.
Kraft was absolutely on fire to start last season, putting up 32 receptions for 489 yards and six touchdowns through seven and a half games. Unfortunately, a torn ACL ended his amazing start. All signs point to him playing in Week 1 and Kraft is only 25 and going into his fourth season. I'm not as worried about him as I am Kittle.

The Tennessee ***** ans' joint practice with the Chicago Bears reached peak intensity after a hit on Wan'Dale Robinson from former ***** ans defensive back Xavier Woods during a team period.
Robinson left the field under his own power but is being evaluated for a concussion, Robert Saleh said.
"We're checking Wan'Dale for a concussion," Saleh said.
The hit produced tension between both teams, with both sidelines coming together.
Saleh had a quick reaction after practice to the hit on Robinson.

One of Oklahoma's biggest offseason additions may not get to play for the Sooners this season. B.J. Edwards' eligibility is in jeopardy after the NCAA won a stay in the case in the Tennessee Court of Appeals.
According to a story from Brody Lusk of Sooners Illustrated, "the Tennessee Court of Appeals granted the NCAA's request to stay the temporary injunction that had provided Edwards and 18 other players with a fifth season of eligibility."
Edwards was granted his eligibility at the end of July as part of the "5 in 5" injunction that granted members of the 2022 recruiting class a fifth year of eligibility. He committed to the Sooners on August 13.
Edwards was expected to play significant minutes in the Sooners' backcourt after committing to Oklahoma on August 13. He averaged 12.7 points, 4.9 ****** ists, and 5.9 rebounds per game for the SMU Mustangs in 2025-2026.
Oklahoma still has Xzayvier Brown and transfer guard Pop Isaacs ready to lead the way at guard, but Edwards would provide a huge boost to the Sooners' rotation.

There isn't an obvious candidate on this Washington team to be a super star national level type of player. But, every college football season a handful of under-the-radar players end up atop the national leaderboards. Washington enters Jedd Fisch's third season in Seattle with a roster that's deeper and more experienced than either of his first two, and among that depth are a handful of players with a shot at topping an FBS statistical leaderboard by December. Here are five Huskies worth watching.
Green might be the safest bet on this list. The graduate transfer punter comes to Montlake after ranking sixth nationally last season with a 47-yard average on 63 punts at San Diego State, including 22 kicks of 50-plus yards. Before that stop, he averaged better than 45 yards a punt across two seasons at Northern Colorado and earned first-team All-Big Sky honors as a true freshman. He's already on the Ray Guy Award preseason watch list. He's 6-foot-4 and 230-pounds with a big leg and if his career averages continue into Big Ten play, he should be in national leader contention.
Roebuck was a true freshman revelation in 2025, finishing second on the team with 42 catches, 554-plus yards and seven touchdowns. He's the one healthy and proven returners among the pass catchers and will be relied upon quite a lot. Roebuck has since moved to a new number and a full-time slot role, the exact alignment most likely to rack up "easy" catches in Fische's scheme. His offenses historically favor the top two receivers with the vast majority of targets, so there should be plenty of chances for Roebuck, who gets open easily anyway. After 42 receptions last season, a leap into the 80-90 catch range isn't far-fetched if he's the number one or two guy from the start.
Williams is possibly the biggest reach on this list. He posted a 161.0 NCAA passer rating in 2025 — 10th nationally — while throwing for just over 3,000 yards and 25 touchdowns and adding 611 rushing yards and six more scores on the ground. Those are obviously very good numbers, but a good chunk of it came in games against the softer part of Washington's schedule. In Washington's four losses last season (Ohio State, Michigan, Indiana, Oregon), his passer rating dropped all the way to 107.8, and he simply hasn't risen to the occasion against that caliber of opponent yet. If Williams can close that gap in 2026 and prove he's just as efficient against Ohio State- and Oregon-caliber defenses as he is against the bottom half of the conference, his baseline efficiency is good enough that a national passing **** le becomes realistic. He's a preseason Davey O'Brien and Maxwell Award watch-list pick and clearly has the ceiling. The question is whether he takes that step against the teams that have given him trouble.
Manu isn't a name without a track record as he's already done this. In 2023 at Arizona, under Jedd Fisch, Manu led the Pac-12 in tackles with 116 to go with 9.5 tackles for loss, 6.5 sacks and an intercep

Pine View new starting quarterback Coy Doman got off to a flying start this season.
Through two games, Doman has thrown for 857 yards and eight touchdowns with a 65.1 completion percentage.
In last week's 34-30 win over Cedar, he tossed a 21-yard TD pass to Carter Buchanan with 2:02 remaining to lead the Panthers to the come-from-behind win.
"Coy Doman is the kind of quarterback every coach wants leading his team. He is tough, competitive, intelligent and extremely coachable, and he continues to grow every week. What stands out most about Coy is his leadership and the confidence his teammates have in him," said Pine View coach Ray Hosner. "He prepares the right way, stays composed under pressure and isn't afraid to compete when the game is on the line. Coy has a very bright future, but more importantly, he is a great young man and teammate who represents Pine View Football the right way. We are fortunate to have him leading the Panthers."

Elliot Anderson came off after 63 minutes as Manchester City beat Bournemouth 2-1 yesterday. The England international suffered a knock to his leg after a collision with Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott. It was feared that Anderson's injury could have kept him out of Manchester City's next match against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Friday night. However, Enzo Maresca has seemingly put those fears to rest after his team's spirited win at the Etihad Stadium.
Speaking after yesterday's match, Enzo Maresca was asked about the injury that Elliot Anderson sustained. The Manchester City manager told the media that he believed that Anderson was suffering from a severe case of cramp. He also praised Anderson's efforts and those of Manchester City's other players who have recently returned to the club after their World Cup efforts. Maresca said: "I think it was cramp. There are four or five players who are not 100% and he is one of them."
"For them, it's like pre-season. They arrive very late and started working with us 10 days ago. Their effort has been unbelievable."
Manchester City will be relieved if Elliot Anderson only suffered from cramp against Bournemouth and has avoided an injury. City's midfield is currently depleted but that situation is likely to change before the transfer window closes. However, Enzo Maresca's side take on Crystal Palace on Friday night at Selhurst Park so the turnaround is short between games for City.
It remains to be seen whether Anderson will be available to play in that match. City will need their club record signing and he showed enough yesterday to indicate that he will be a very good player for Manchester City once he is at full fitness.

SEATTLE (AP) — Well before Kade Anderson threw his first MLB pitch, the Seattle Mariners' prized left-hander took some time to make a few fans' days.
The 22-year-old Anderson got done with his warmup routine on Saturday quicker than usual before his much-ballyhooed big league debut against the Chicago Cubs. So, rather than ignore the young fans who watched his bullpen session, Anderson did a little something out of the ordinary and scribbled his signature a handful of times before the Mariners beat the Cubs 5-4 in walk-off fashion.
Growing up in Slidell, Louisiana, Anderson didn't go to many major league games. But, Anderson used to hound LSU baseball players for autographs as a kid, so he was more than willing to lend a few minutes of his time.
"That's what it's all about at the end of the day, to go out there and pitch for the fans," Anderson said. "... You just got to give back to those kids."
Anderson, the third pick in the 2025 draft out of LSU, became the first player from his draft class to make his major league debut. He looked the part of one of the top pitching prospects in baseball, too, for most of the evening.

On Thursday, the Pennsylvania State Athletic Commission (PSAC) released a full list of medical suspensions issued to the combatants from Saturday's event at Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia.
The highest-profile name to receive a suspension was Islam Makhachev, who the commission diagnosed with a rib contusion, resulting in a 30-day term handed out. Ian Machado Garry, whom he beat by unanimous decision in the main event, did not receive a medical suspension. Neither did co-main event participants Mackenzie Dern and Gillian Robertson.
Three fighters from the undercard are facing indefinite suspensions. Unsurprisingly, Tresean Gore, who lost at least one tooth as the result of a Vicente Luque flying knee, is among that bunch. Eduardo Chapolin and Ramiz Brahimaj are also now on indefinite suspensions as a result of their finish losses.
