To summarize my investment approach, I prefer to buy companies with long histories of dividend increases and historically high yields. Those two traits don't come around all that often, and sometimes I find clusters of stocks in specific sectors. I need to think specifically about diversification, one of the simplest and most effective ways to reduce risk. Here's how I've done it as I've built my portfolio of around 34 investments.
The Motley Fool recommends that investors own 50 stocks. That's a perfectly fine number, but also a lot of work. And just owning 50 stocks doesn't actually mean you are diversified. You could own 50 technology stocks, for example, which would leave you with exposure to just a single sector. That's not diversification. Diversification is really about owning a reasonable number of investments across a wide range of sectors and ****** et classes.
Missed Nvidia in 2009? This Rare Signal Is Flashing Again. In 2009, a "Double Down" signal flashed for a little-known chipmaker called Nvidia. For the first time in years, that same "Total Conviction" signal is flashing for a company 1/100th the size of Nvidia. Continue »
My first step toward diversification was to take an honest look at what I want to achieve and what I'm capable of. My goal is a mixture of income and capital appreciation. I am fairly confident in my ability to select dividend stocks, though every investor makes mistakes from time to time, and I know I can only juggle so many stocks at once. In other words, 50 stocks are too many for me, so a core part of my diversification strategy is to outsource some of my work.
For example, I own two Baron mutual funds to gain exposure to growth stocks and smaller companies. I own several closed-end funds: one focused on healthcare stocks with an option income overlay, one investing in convertible securities, and one with a broadly diversified dividend portfolio. And I own three exchange-traded funds: one with an option income focus and two that use very different screening approaches to pick dividend stocks.

On Friday, Dec. 18, 2020, shares of electric-car maker Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) rose almost 6% to close at a record $695. More than 200 million shares changed hands that session (more than $131 billion of stock), making it one of the busiest trading days in the company's history.
The buying wasn't optional for everyone. S&P Dow Jones Indices had scheduled Tesla to join the S&P 500 (SNPINDEX:^GSPC) at its full weight before the market opened the following Monday. And the addition was based on that Friday's closing prices. In other words, every fund tracking the index effectively paid $695.

Nearly six years later, that $10,000 would have become about $15,700. The same money in an S&P 500 index fund would have grown to about $20,500 before dividends.

SpaceX (NASDAQ:SPCX) has been building its AI business at warp speed. It turns out to be much more challenging to rapidly build reliable data centers than expected. Some of its facilities ran without backup power for months. That recently led the company to make some changes, including reshuffling its leadership team to ensure it can meet a looming deadline for a $920 million-a-month compute deal with Alphabet's (NASDAQ:GOOG)(NASDAQ:GOOGL) Google.
Here's a look at what went wrong and how **** eX is racing to fix the problem.

Engineering and reliability issues have surfaced at **** eX data center sites in Tennessee and Mississippi. According to a recent report by The Information, several sites operated without backup cooling and power systems as the company pushed to expand capacity as fast as possible. That publication has previously reported issues at **** eX data center sites, including that its Macrohand facility in Tennessee had to rely on over 100 mobile chillers and recorded uptime well below the company's 99.9% internal target. Meanwhile, the company used temporary gas turbines at its Mississippi data center longer than expected due to supply chain issues in delaying 41 permanent units. Temporary outages of the power and cooling systems have interrupted AI model training.

Shares of NuScale Power (NYSE:SMR) trade around $9.63 as of this writing, down about 83% from their $57.42 52-week high.
But the demand that sent nuclear stocks soaring in the first place hasn't reversed. Constellation Energy (NASDAQ:CEG), for instance, reported an additional 920 megawatts of long-term power purchase agreements alongside its second-quarter results.

In other words, the crash and the demand can both be true at once, because these companies do very different jobs. NuScale designs reactors, Cameco (NYSE:CCJ) sells the fuel, and Constellation already sells the power. A $2,000 investment split across the three buys three different claims on the same electricity demand.

Zscaler (NASDAQ:ZS) reports its fiscal fourth-quarter results after the market's close tomorrow, Sept. 3. While several cybersecurity stocks are near all-time highs, Zscaler has been out of favor recently, as management gave cautious guidance in its previous earnings report.
However, with two of the largest cybersecurity companies, CrowdStrike (NASDAQ: CRWD) and Palo Alto Networks (NASDAQ: PANW), recently reporting results that show AI is boosting cybersecurity demand, could Zscaler beat the modest expectations investors have for its business?

Sep. 2—BEMIDJI — When looking at the singles side of the Bemidji High School tennis courts, the home fans would be forgiven if they thought Wednesday's match against Staples-Motley took place in 2025.
For much of this season, the Lumberjacks' singles lineup has carried over from last fall. Liz Peterson occupies the top spot, while Lilly Caron and Bailey Rupp typically play Nos. 2 and 3 singles, save for their occasional doubles appearances. Natalie ****** berg rounds out the group at No. 4 singles, just as she did on Wednesday in the Jacks' 6-1 win over the Cardinals.
The real differences so far in the young 2026 season have been on the doubles side of the court. With the departures of Megan Berg, Naomi Johnson and Abby Myhrer, almost every doubles pair had to be retooled for 2026.
Junior Kelli Carlson has been moved up to No. 2, paired with eighth-grader Piper Whiting. Freshmen Norah Friese and Emma Carlson are gaining experience at the No. 3 spot.
Then there are seniors Zoe McNallan and Millie Knott, who have known each other even before they became partners on the tennis court.

Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:META) has faced at least two significant issues over the past year that have weighed on its stock. First, many investors aren't convinced that its massive artificial intelligence (AI)-related spending will yield the kind of return the company is hoping for. And since these investments are shrinking margins and earnings, skeptics have been running for the hills.
Second, Meta Platforms has faced lawsuits over its social media websites and apps. Plaintiffs allege that they have harmed users, especially younger users. The good news for Meta is that the company has made significant progress in overcoming one of these headwinds while keeping its core business mostly intact.

A coalition of U.S. states and territories was suing Meta Platforms in lawsuits over social media addiction. On Aug. 26, they agreed to a settlement worth up to $17.1 billion that Meta will pay. The tech giant will also be required to install stronger guardrails to protect young users across its apps. These will include daily usage limits, the ability to opt out of personalized algorithms, and stricter parental controls.

Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA) has steadily delivered one thing in particular to investors quarter after quarter: Mind-blowing earnings growth that's reached record levels well into the billions of dollars. This is thanks to the company's dominance in the high-growth market of artificial intelligence (AI) chips and its expansion into related products and services. In fact, Nvidia has built an AI empire, and in the latest three-month period, this translated into $96 billion in revenue and $59 billion in profit.
In the earliest stages of the AI boom, this growth resulted in stock price gains, with the shares climbing 800% over the past five years. But in recent times, Nvidia stock has faltered here and there. For example, in the first quarter of the year, it slipped 6.4%, and its year-to-date gain of 16% isn't huge for such a high-growth company.

Nvidia reported second-quarter earnings on Wednesday, and the stock is up 7% since. Revenue grew 106% year over year, the fourth straight quarter of acceleration. Nvidia also locked in hundreds of billions of dollars of memory and advanced packaging through 2032.
The valuation remains compelling: Nvidia is worth $5.5 trillion, but it also trades at a forward P/E ratio in the low 20s. That's well below market averages.
Management has developed a cash machine: Take just one of Amazon's (NASDAQ: AMZN) planned buildouts; it could require 2 million Nvidia chips! Nvidia's CFO Colette Kress expects the top five hyperscalers to spend nearly $800 billion on capital spending in 2026. In 2027? Over $1.3 trillion.

Peter Cullen has died at the age of 85. Cullen was a prolific voice actor who played Transformers' Optimus Prime in both the animated and live-action franchises, Winnie the Pooh's Eeyore, the evil K.A.R.R. in Knight Rider, and more. He was also known for voicing the menacing clicking sounds that came out of the monster's mouth in Predator, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Cullen's death was announced on Thursday, August 27, but Cullen died on August 26 in his home in Los Angeles, his agent, Kevin Motley, told The Hollywood Reporter. An official cause of death has not been disclosed.
The Canadian actor "passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family — and held in the hearts of his many friends and countless fans worldwide," Cullen's family said in a statement. The family asks "that you honor his remarkable legacy by serving your communities and leading others with compassion, integrity, and loyalty, and always remember 'be strong enough to be gentle.'"
Cullen recently played the voice of Thadeus in Invincible on Prime Video. Cullen also played the voice of King Kong in the 1976 remake. His live-action work in the early years of his career included being the announcer for The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour and The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour.
