Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick should play forward Benjamin Sesko as his side are offering "no danger" through the middle, says former Premier League striker Charlie Austin.
Matheus Cunha started in the striker position with Bruno Fernandes behind him and Bryan Mbeumo and Marcus Rashford on the wings on Sunday. However, his side were largely blunt in the 1-0 derby defeat by rivals Manchester City, despite playing against 10 men for almost 70 minutes, and register a lower xG (expected goals) than their opponents.
Sesko was eventually introduced midway through the second half but could not turn the tie around.
"I don't think we should allow VAR and those moments to overshadow the fact that Manchester United were poor," Austin told BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily podcast.
"They don't play with a number nine. They had 10 versus 11 and didn't have a number nine. Cunha is not a nine, he is a 10 or he plays wide. He is never occupying the two centre backs or he drops in.

Following the sudden retirement of veteran center Drew Dalman this offseason, the Chicago Bears wasted no time in making a trade for Garrett Bradbury from the New England Patriots, looking to stabilize the position this season.
Chicago also drafted rookie Logan Jones in the second round of the 2026 NFL Draft, and while he was believed to bring competition to Bradbury, the veteran took control of the battle in preseason and will begin the year as the team's starting center.
Bradbury will be reunited with his college teammate in Joe Thuney as starters on the Bears offensive line, and offensive coordinator Press Taylor credited the veteran with earning the trust of his coaches and teammates.

Well. Another pathetic showing from a St. Louis Cardinals bullpen resulted in a series sweep against a mediocre opponent. This team has constantly shown it plays to the level of their competition, but the series against the Giants went too far.
After winning five of their last six series on the road, including taking the season series against the Dodgers, the Cardinals had momentum against the miserable Giants only to see the season pretty much come to an end in San Francisco. To get over the emotions this three-game set made me feel, I dusted off the podcast equipment and finally recorded a new episode of Cardinals on My Time.
Joining me on the episode was returning guest Matt Blaker, and nothing against Matt, but I was pumped to have Tanner Larkins joining the pod as well. Chances are, you have no idea who that is and I just came across his profile earlier this week. Tanner is the front man for a band called Bayview Lane and his two singles instantly caught my attention. Add on the fact he was rocking a Cardinals hat in his videos while being from the Chicago area like me, he was the perfect guest to have on with Matt and me.
In the episode, we talked about the rollercoaster ride of the season, roster management, but also focused on the future. To me, the most frustrating point of this season was the roster management, be it playing short-handed through injuries or with a seemingly always "taxed" bullpen. The bullpen conversation was made worse after this series, but the problems revert all the way back to the offseason despite the early season success and breakout of certain guys.
One thing we talked about was that this bullpen creation, or lack thereof, was done intentionally. That is one of the more upsetting things to me (and keep your "this is a rebuild" comments to yourself) because this was a clear hole all year. Of course, bullpens are a ***** shoot every year, but you're telling me adding another one or two higher profile relievers would prevent the rebuild from happening? Worst case scenario, you pull the plug on those arms in a season that doesn't matter, middle case, you flip them at the deadline, best case, you're actually competing for a playoff spot instead of blowing 37 leads.

Stop me if you've heard this over the past 48 hours: the broadcast clock is not the official game clock.
On Saturday night, Michigan's season-opening matchup against Western Michigan went from a college football game to an all-time timekeeping scandal.
Michigan Wolverines quarterback Bryce Underwood launched a Hail Mary out of the end zone as the clock hit triple zeroes. The Western Michigan Broncos thought they'd pulled off the 12-7 upset. After review, officials concluded one second remained on the clock, giving Michigan a second chance. Underwood found JJ Buchanan for the game-winning touchdown, shrouded in controversy.
On the NBC broadcast, rules ***** yst Terry McAuley was flabberghasted by that phantom second. The Big Ten released a formal statement, including the official internal video used for review. On Sunday, NBC's John Fanta stated, "The official time of the game is kept by the Big Ten. Our cameras are not the official arbiter of timekeeping within the game."
By Monday night, ESPN's broadcast of Florida State and SMU experienced a lengthy delay due to a power outage at Doak Campbell Stadium. Finally, officials surmised they'd restored enough light and power to play the game, but with several caveats. No replay, no scoreboard, no PA announcer, and no coach-to-play communication.

Police are investigating an incident between Cardiff defender Krystian Bielik and home supporters during Portsmouth's 2-0 Championship win on Saturday.
Bielik was involved in a physical altercation with a fan as he went to retrieve a ball from the crowd late in the second half.
Hampshire Police were notified of the incident during the match and launched an investigation immediately afterwards.
"We can confirm that we are investigating an incident in which a teenage boy was reportedly the victim of a common ***** ault during the football match at Fratton Park. Our enquiries are ongoing," the police said.
Several Portsmouth supporters made gestures that indicated they believed the fan had been grabbed by the throat.

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is live THIS AFTERNOON (Sat., Sept. 5, 2026) with UFC Paris, streaming live online via Paramount+. The event happens at Accor Arena in Paris, France, featuring a special Octagon newcomer in the main event.
Salahdine Parnasse vs. Dan Hooker is our main event, going down in the Lightweight division. Parnasse is a long-time former KSW champion who made a big splash with his one and done appearance at MVP MMA. The reason he was done there was because UFC wanted to poach him out of that fledgling promotion before he drew too many serious mixed martial arts (MMA) fans over to it. Hooker comes into this one off two losses and looking very much like a sacrificial lamb. However, as last week taught us, -600 odds can be overcome.
The co-main is an all French affair, in the Featherweight division, with Fares Ziam meeting Axel Sola. Both of these guys are action fighters known for putting on a show. They should get the crowd roaring in Paris, even if it's not obvious to the locals whom they should be cheering for.
Rounding out the main card is Michael Page vs. Nursulton Ruziboev, Daniil Donchenko vs. Punahele Soriano, Kurtis Campbell vs. Trevor Peek and Losene Keita vs. Muhammad Naimov. Page might be trying to fight out of his UFC contract here, which is the reason UFC has pared him with a big, rangy striker who can also make you quit on the ground.
The featured "Prelim" is Morgan Charriere vs. Felipe Lima. The undercard also boasts Mario Pinto vs. Ryan Spann, Oumar Sy vs. Modestas Bukauskas and Nathaniel Wood against late replacement Pavel Andrusca. Further down the card we have Michael Aljarouj vs. Fabia Sintes, Nora Cornolle vs. Klaudia Sygula, Matthieu Duclos vs. Lucas Felipe Dias and Delphine Benouaich vs. Sofia Montenegro to make up the numbers. Aljarouj does look like an intriguing prospect, though.

Rutgers football paid $1.55 million to lose to UMass, 37-21, on Sept. 3, snapping the Minutemen's 16-game losing streak. But that number presumably didn't include pyrotechnics.
The Scarlet Knights hosted the saddest fireworks show in the world after the loss at SHI Stadium in Piscataway, putting a droopy exclamation point on an 0-1 start to Greg Schiano's seventh season.
REQUIRED READING: UMass snaps longest college football losing streak with rout of Rutgers
It's the kind of loss that immediately puts a coach on the hot seat, and Rutgers will now have to reconcile what this means for the nation's oldest program. While the team has hardly been even middle-of-the-road in the college landscape since Schiano's first stint in 2001-2011, losing a buy game to a team that hadn't won a game since 2024 is program-shakingly bad.
The loss to UMass is arguably as bad or worse as losing to some FCS programs. Since joining the FBS in 2012, the Minutemen have been brutally bad, amassing a 26-134 record with six seasons with 11 losses or more.

Deion Sanders' buyout details: Here's how much it will cost Colorado to fire head coach originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
By all accounts, Colorado coach Deion Sanders is entering 2026 in a much better position than 2025.
Sanders battled health issues, including bladder cancer, throughout the 2025 offseason, and he went into the year with an unsettled quarterback situation for the first time in his tenure with the Buffaloes. The results were predictable: a regression to 3-9, putting Colorado near the bottom of the Big 12.
With those health issues improved and the hope that Julian Lewis is ready to take the next step at quarterback, Sanders is facing a critical season to get Colorado back on track. If not, his job status could come into question.
Here's a look at Sanders' buyout and what it would cost Colorado to fire him in 2026.

Here are five high school games/sporting events to watch out for this week:
This is always one of the top early-season invitationals, including Crestwood, Field, Garfield, Southeast and Streetsboro out of Portage County. The Rockets boys and Red Devils girls are coming off team ****** les at last week's Billy Goat Challenge. Streetsboro had three runners in the top 11 of the boys race: senior Ares Miller (fifth, 18:41.59), sophomore Preston Krzeminski (ninth, 19:11.16) and sophomore Ryan Haber (11th, 19:14.72). Crestwood had two in the top four of the girls race, seniors Piper Seibold (second, 20:47.77) and senior Madie Grace Gonczy (fourth, 21:44.23), while Streetsboro (junior Cara Thomson and senior Kaelyn Malloy) and Field (sophomore Alison Church) also had top-10 finishers.

Two undefeated teams square off in this epic clash in Kent, their first meeting as Metro Athletic Conference rivals. Both recently recorded signature nonleague wins, with Roosevelt topping Lake (Federal League) and Field topping Copley (Suburban League). The Rough Riders have scored a whopping 22 goals through three games (including eight from senior Audrey Haines) while the Falcons have yielded just three in their first five games.
It's too bad Portage County soccer fans can't be two places at once because both Falcons-Rough Riders games are must-watch. Indeed, while the girls teams haven't squared off in a while, the Field and Roosevelt boys have played each of the last three seasons with all three games decided by a single goal, including the Falcons prevailing 4-3 in Kent a year ago. Field carries an undefeated record into this year's clash while both teams are trying to stay atop the MAC standings with matching 2-0 records entering the night.

The Seattle Seahawks took care first part of their roster-building process for the 2026 season. Seattle begins its Super Bowl repeat push on Sept. 9 against the New England Patriots, a familiar opponent after the Seahawks defeated New England to win Super Bowl 60. The defending champions are currently 3.5-point favorites over the Patriots at FanDuel Sportsbook.
After finishing the preseason, Seattle must reduce its roster to a maximum of 53 players by 3 p.m. PT on Sunday, August 30.
But the initial 53-man roster is only part of the process.
Once the waiver wire process is completed, the Seahawks will begin ******* embling their practice squad, which can provide additional developmental players and emergency depth throughout the season.
The claiming period for players placed on waivers during the final roster reduction expires at 10 a.m. PT on Monday, August 31. After the league distributes the subsequent Personnel Notice confirming the results of the waiver process, teams can begin forming their practice squads.

The Carolina Panthers had us wait it out on Sunday evening, going well past the league's 6 p.m. ET deadline to officially announce their initial 53-man roster for the 2026 season. But the reigning NFC South champions finally turned in their work, and made up for their tardiness with a bit of intrigue.
As is the case with every team every summer, the roster cutdown included some shockers. While many players are deserving of a spot on the program, there are only so many to go around.
So, whose departures caught us off guard?
Here are the Panthers' four most surprising cuts of the weekend . . .
Reed made plays throughout spring and summer workouts this offseason, establishing himself as an emerging talent in the wideout room. Heck, he even got some praise from president of football operations and general manager Dan Morgan during the broadcast of the second preseason game.

Newcastle United overcame Tottenham Hotspur to continue their unbeaten start to the 2026/27 campaign.
The Magpies took the lead through Anthony Elanga before Yoane Wissa doubled it to hand Matthias Jaissle's team all three points.
Elanga has finally found his groove after struggling last season following his arrival at Newcastle.
Wissa has also shaken off the injuries and looks like a brand new signing for the Geordies.
However, arguably the most impressive player on the pitch for Newcastle was right-back Amar Dedic, who has been a revelation.

With five birdies on his back nine and four on the front, Rory McIlroy carved up East Lake Golf Club with his putter throughout Saturday's third round to post a thrilling 7-under 63.
A pair of par-3 bogeys at No. 2 and No. 11 limited McIlroy from tying — and perhaps breaking — the low score of the tournament. It was still a showcase for the three-time FedExCup winner who put together his best round of the week — and beat his previous best mark of the 2026 playoffs, a 6-under 64 during the opening round of last week's BMW Championship.
McIlroy and Round 3 playing partner Si Woo Kim were the fourth pairing off the tee in Atlanta on Moving Day, and now have a long wait as the 11 other duos behind them are still on the course.
His birdie putt on the par-4 17th brought him into a five-way tie with Chris Gotterup, Viktor Hovland, Cameron Young and Ryan Gerard. It also gave him a stretch of three consecutive made birdie putts.
McIlroy went on to par his final hole after his tee shot disappeared off the fairway. He scrambled beautifully and gave himself at a fourth straight circle but would up just right of the cup on his birdie attempt.

Bournemouth host Everton at the Vitality Stadium on Saturday in their next Premier League match.
AFC Bournemouth will be looking to get their season moving after a heartbreaking 2-1 loss to Manchester City in the opening game. Marcus Tavernier had given the Cherries the lead at the Etihad, but two late strikes ended their hopes and halted their long unbeaten run. Although they left Manchester without any points, head coach Marco Rose will have taken encouragement from the way his side controlled large parts of the match against the champions.
Bournemouth travel to this fixture with a mostly fit squad, as head coach Marco Rose reported no new injury issues after the City game.
They regain a key midfield option with Ryan Christie returning from suspension. New signing Alvaro Rodriguez has finished his recovery and is available for selection.
Nonetheless, several players remain out long term: Amine Adli is sidelined with a calf problem, Eli Junior Kroupi is nursing a foot injury, Veljko Milosavljevic has a knee issue, and Julian Araujo is still treating a thigh strain.

The New England Patriots have signed former New Canaan high school football and Boston College offensive lineman Jack Conley.
Conley, 25, returns to New England after spending time with three NFL organizations over the past year. The 6-foot-7, 325-pound guard originally signed with the Patriots as an undrafted free agent out of Boston College on May 9, 2025.
He was waived during final roster cuts last August, before signing with the Patriots' practice squad the following day. Conley had two brief stints on New England's practice squad before being released in September.
He later joined the Detroit Lions' practice squad in November and also spent time with the Cleveland Browns during the 2025 season.
Conley went to training camp with Cleveland this summer before the Browns released him on Aug. 18.

The PGA Tour has suspended senior tour member Matt Gogel for six months for placing multiple golf bets in recent years, the league announced on Wednesday.
Gogel, who plays on the PGA Tour Champions, placed multiple bets on PGA Tour events in 2024 and 2025. It's unclear which tournaments he bet on or what the wagers were, but the Tour said they did not involve any events in which he was a participant. Betting on any PGA Tour event or any other professional golf competition is a clear violation of the Tour's integrity program.
Gogel is now suspended from Tour-sanctioned events for six months, and will be eligible to return in late February.
"In 2024 and 2025, I unknowingly violated the PGA Tour policy by placing small recreational wagers on golf," Gogel said in a statement. "I want to be clear that these wagers were not placed on regular PGA Tour events, PGA Tour Champions events or any tournament in which I participated. I would never knowingly violate the integrity of the game of golf.
"I made an honest mistake, and I look forward to playing in 227 on the PGA Tour Champions."

WASHINGTON (AP) — CJ Abrams had the go-ahead RBI in a five-run fifth inning, Cade Cavalli won his fourth consecutive start and the Washington Nationals defeated Colorado 13-3 on Monday night to send the Rockies to their season-worst seventh consecutive loss.
Daylen Lile homered and drove in five runs for the Nationals, who had dropped three games in a row and seven of eight.
Willi Castro and Ezequiel Tovar homered for Colorado.
After going hitless for the first four innings against Rockies starter Ryan Feltner (5-8), the Nationals opened the fifth with two singles. Nasim Nuñez then laid down a sacrifice bunt toward third that Castro threw down the right-field line for an error, allowing two runs to score.
Abrams laced a double to right to drive in Nuñez and give the Nationals a 3-2 lead. Abrams stole third and scored on Abimelec Ortiz's grounder. Lile and Brady House hit consecutive doubles to add another run.

O.J. Brigance, a Super Bowl champion with the Baltimore Ravens, has passed away at the age of 56 following a 19-year battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) – also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, the team announced.
A native of Houston, Texas, Brigance didn't have to travel far to play in college – starring at Rice University before turning pro and playing in the Canadian Football League with the BC Lions beginning in 1991. Scottie Scheffler is well on his way to winning another PGA Tour money ****** le.
With his lopsided eight-shot victory in the FedEx St. Jude Classic on Aug. 16 at TPC Southwind in Memphis, Scheffler earned $3.6 million and passed the $20 million mark in earnings for the fourth year in a row.
He can't be overtaken this week at the BMW Championship at the Bellerive Country Club in St. Louis, since he has a lead of more than $6 million over Cameron Young and the purse is the same as St. Jude, $20 million overall and $3.6 million for the winner.

Young doesn't have much a lead in the bankroll department over his next nearest rival, topping third-place Matt Fitzpatrick by less than $185,000.
