The pizza dining sector has been in a downsizing mode in 2026 with several chains closing numerous locations for a variety of reasons.
Some of the biggest and most popular chains, such as Pizza Hut and Papa John's, plan to close 100s for restaurants in 2006 to rid themselves of properties that have become a financial burden.
Boston-based pizza dining chain Bertucci's, which has filed for bankruptcy three times in the last eight years, has also closed dozens of locations.
Bertucci's most recently shuttered its last Washington, D.C.-area location with the closing of its Springfield, Va., restaurant at the end of September, according to the Washington Business Journal.
The 45-year-old pizza chain, which at one time had over 100 locations, has 11 remaining restaurants in Massachusetts, Delaware, and Pennsylvania.

Google and Constellation Energy announced a 20-year power purchase agreement on Tuesday to bring 890 megawatts of new nuclear capacity onto the PJM Interconnection grid, with Constellation committing more than $4.3 billion to fund the build-out.
The capacity will be generated through turbine, steam generator, and digital control system upgrades at 11 Constellation nuclear units in Illinois, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey, the companies said. The first uprate is expected to be delivered by 2028. The agreement is expected to sustain roughly 4,400 existing jobs and create approximately 7,200 new construction jobs during the building period.
Alongside the power purchase agreement, the companies entered into a separate 15-year energy supply agreement covering an additional 2,700 megawatts from Constellation's existing fleet in the PJM market, the company said.
"We're committed to meeting our growth responsibly by actively investing in clean, reliable power that brings new capacity to our nation's grids," Amanda Peterson Corio, global head of energy and power at Google, said in a statement. "Our agreement with Constellation to fund nuclear reactor uprates will strengthen the PJM grid, which serves 67 million people, all while protecting energy affordability and supporting local union jobs."

CNN has obtained newly unsealed police body camera footage showing the arrest of Luigi Mangione inside a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, days after he fatally shot United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
The hours of footage capture officers questioning Mangione at the fast-food restaurant on the morning of December 9, 2024, before he is handcuffed, searched and transported to the police station. The videos show police conducting more thorough searches of Mangione and his belongings at the station, including the moment an officer finds a gun – now known to be the murder weapon – inside his backpack.
This is the first time the videos have been seen outside the courtroom. Some of the footage was played during a dayslong suppression hearing last December, when the defense argued evidence recovered during the arrest should be suppressed because Mangione’s backpack was improperly searched.

Election Day is still a month away, but more than 700,000 Americans have already voted across at least 30 states. There are signs emerging of the advantage Democrats have in motivating their voters – a trend that’s played out in polling all summer long.
In several states with key Senate or governor races this fall, Democrats make up a larger share of voters requesting ballots so far than they did at this point in 2024.
What early voting data is showing ahead of the 2026 midterms
In Iowa, Democrats have made 67% of ballot requests, up from 54% at this point in 2024. In Pennsylvania, it’s 66%, up from 62%, and in Maine it’s 57%, up from 53%. And according to data from the North Carolina State Board of Elections, 42% of ballot requests are from Democrats, up from 36% at this point two years ago.
It’s worth noting that in all of those states except for Iowa, ballot requests at this point in 2022 were more Democratic than they are now.

Pennsylvania has reported its fifth measles-associated death of 2026 as the state's ongoing outbreak climbs to 943 confirmed cases across 39 counties.
The Pennsylvania department of health said on Wednesday that an unvaccinated Lancaster county resident who tested positive for measles had died. Health officials did not release further information about the individual, citing privacy protections.
The death marks the fifth Pennsylvania resident to meet the state's definition of a measles-associated death this year after a fourth death two weeks ago. Due to how the Trump administration has changed its method for reporting measles deaths, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has not counted the Pennsylvania measles deaths in its national tally.
As of Monday 28 September, Pennsylvania had recorded 40 new positive cases. The outbreak has now reached 39 counties, with 943 ******* ulative confirmed cases, 176 hospitalizations and five confirmed measles-associated deaths.
Only four of those confirmed cases have involved vaccinated individuals, representing less than 1% of the state's total cases.

With control of both chambers at stake, Democrats have sought to move past the bad blood of the primaries, but in several competitive states, influential party figures have withheld endorsements or so far declined to campaign with nominees for the November 3 US midterm elections.
In Maine, the governor has yet to endorse the Democratic US Senate candidate. In Texas, a congresswoman has declined to campaign alongside the state representative who defeated her in the Democratic Senate primary. In Michigan, establishment centrists are steering clear of the party's progressive Senate pick. The Williams Companies, Inc. The Third Circuit vacated the certification and returned the matter to state regulators. The Williams Companies, Inc. A 40-year-old Pennsylvania woman who died with what appears to be measles-related complications also had ongoing lung problems, including asthma and COPD, according to the coroner's office who handled the case. It would be the third measles-related death in Pennsylvania amid a surging outbreak of the virus. 693 cases had been confirmed so far this year in the state, with 99 in the last week alone. The coroner's office of western Pennsylvania's Jefferson County reported that a 40-year-old woman died on Saturday from complications ******* ociated with measles. The commonwealth has seen an outbreak of the highly-infectious disease, adding to a resurgence of measles in the United States as official data shows declining U.S. vaccination rates.
The coroner's office said it was working with the Pennsylvania Department of Health.
"This is a heartbreaking loss for the family and an unfortunate reminder that measles can be a serious and potentially life-threatening disease," Coroner Greg Furlong said in a statement posted on Facebook.

When it rains, it pours.
In the literal sense, UCF waited more than an hour before taking the field as thunderstorms hovered over and rolled through Pittsburgh's Acrisure Stadium. In a figurative one, just about everything went wrong for the Knights' offense on a dreary day in Western Pennsylvania, resulting in a 10th consecutive road defeat.

Sen. John Fetterman has faced a tide of public criticism from fellow Democrats as he stakes out lonely ground as a critic of the far-left wing of his party — and another wave rolled in Wednesday after he made a surprise video appearance at the Republican midterm convention.
So far, however, his Senate colleagues haven't joined the pile-on.
Democratic senators are staying above the fray as they work to flip the majority in November amid constant speculation that the 57-year-old Pennsylvanian could trigger a nightmare scenario by leaving the party and caucusing with the GOP.

Revenue climbed, the dividend grew for the 36th time in 35 years, and the merger with American Water inched closer to the finish line. But earnings per share actually dipped from a year earlier, and the company had to strip out merger costs just to show flat profitability. Essential's regulated water segment posted revenue of $357.5 million in the quarter, up 7.6% from $332.3 million a year earlier, and the whole company's first-half revenue climbed 7.2% to nearly $1.4 billion. Much of that growth came from rate cases: state regulators approved $43.9 million in new annual water revenue across Pennsylvania, Illinois, Ohio, North Carolina and Indiana, plus $12.7 million more for the gas business in Kentucky and Pennsylvania. Another $79.7 million in water rate requests and a $163.2 million gas case in Pennsylvania, tied to replacing aging pipelines, are still working through the process.
The company keeps buying its way into new customers, too. In May, it closed a $4.9 million wastewater deal in Bastrop County, Texas, and it has signed agreements worth roughly $282 million to add over 200,000 more customers in Pennsylvania, Texas, North Carolina and New Jersey, including the $276.5 million purchase of Philadelphia-area sewer authority DELCORA. Since 2015, acquisitions have added more than 138,000 customers to Essential's base.
Layer on the pending American Water merger, which cleared Virginia and Ohio regulators this year after nearly unanimous shareholder approval in February, and Essential is positioning itself as a much larger multi-state utility by early 2027. The board's decision to raise the dividend 5.25% to $0.3606 per share, continuing a streak of 36 increases over 35 years, signals confidence that this growth is durable.
Look past the top line and the picture gets less flattering. Second quarter net income actually fell to $105.7 million from $107.8 million a year ago, pulling GAAP earnings per share down to $0.37 from $0.38. Essential had to report an adjusted $0.38 figure just to exclude merger-related costs and show earnings roughly matching last year's. The slide is sharper over six months: net income dropped to $330.1 million, or $1.16 per share, from $391.6 million, or $1.41 per share, in the first half of 2025.

Andy Williams, an All Elite Wrestling star known as The Butcher and a metalcore guitarist, has died at age 48.
Williams died on Saturday night after a medical emergency during an Enjoy Wrestling event at Mr. Smalls Theatre in Millvale, Pennsylvania, as the Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office told TMZ.
Williams and his tag-team partner, Jesse Guilmette a.k.a. The Blade, had a match against wrestler TME at the event.
Enjoy Wrestling said in an X post on Saturday that Williams collapsed at the end of his match and that doctors on staff provided immediate medical ******* istance, administering CPR until an ambulance arrived.
According to dispatch audio TMZ released Sunday morning, a male wrestler hit his head on a ring post at Saturday's event. A cause of death for Williams has not been released.
