Recent trade acquisition Jaylen Brown is preparing for the 2026-27 NBA season, his first with the Philadelphia 76ers. Ahead of training camp, the former Boston Celtics forward was seen working out with famous shooting instructor Chris "Lethal Shooter" Matthews. Before Matthews became a famous coach, he played for Washington State and St. Bonaventure and also spent time in the NBA G-League.
In a video posted to social media, Brown was knocking down consecutive long-range attempts, giving Philadelphia fans something to cheer about prior to the team's season opener in October. Brown, who led the league in two-pointers attempted last season, is a career 35.8% shooter from beyond the arc. Last season, Brown shot slightly below that figure, converting on 34.7% of 3-point attempts.
Following a top-six finish in MVP voting a season ago, increased shooting efficiency from Brown will help him benefit as an off-ball contributor when LeBron James, Tyrese Maxey or Joel Embiid is in possession.

The Bob Chesney Era is off and running for the UCLA Bruins. The Bruins outlasted the Cal Bears Saturday night, picking up a 45-24 victory to move to 1-0 on the 2026 season.
It was a hard-fought win to begin Chesney's tenure, as Cal and quarterback Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele battled late into Saturday night but UCLA's defense got three turnovers and three sacks in the win.
The UCLA offense shined too. Aside from a red zone interception by Nico Iamaleava, Dean Kennedy's offense shined. UCLA rushed for 279 yards with James Madison transfer Wayne Knight looking like a star, and finding the end zone three times in his UCLA debut.
It was a balanced rushing attack, with the Bruins' offensive line winning up front, creating holes on the ground for Knight, Anthony Woods, Jaivian Thomas and Iamaleava on the ground. While Knight found the end zone three times, Woods scored twice and totaled 118 yards on only eight carries. As a team, UCLA averaged 9.0 yards per carry.
UCLA left meat on the bone late in the first half, as an Iamaleava interception led to a Cal touchdown but that didn't instill fear in the offense, as Iamaleava found Matthews for a deep pass to set up a last-second field goal to give the Bruins a 24-17 halftime lead.

Ray Matthews is no stranger to extreme challenges - after all, when he turned 75 the keen runner marked the milestone by running the equivalent of 75 marathon distances in 75 days. Ten years on, his passion for running remains undimmed.
Matthews, from Rotherham, has now set his sights on taking part in next year's Bigfoot 200 ultra-marathon in the USA, whose 200-mile (322km) route will take him through Washington State's Cascade Mountains.

One of the more refined pass-protecting tackles in the 2027 cycle, Matthews is widely considered to have first-round NFL Draft potential, and after committing to Texas A&M over Miami, Aggie fans are waiting for the blue-chip big man to officially shut down his recruitment and sign with the program in early December.
Late last month, Matthews revealed in an interview with GigEm247's Cade Draughon that he plans to announce his recruitment shutdown in due time and will release a statement on X, but for the remaining fans still unsure if the Florida native is truly locked in with the Aggies, his post-game interview with Marcus Benjamin stated that he is "a thousand percent locked in" with Texas A&M.

Japan's 10-year yield was perched above 3% for the first time in 30 years, while rising gas prices meant German ‌10-year Bund yields were stuck at their highest since 2011 and Britain's equivalent was at its highest since 2008. Yields rise as prices fall and vice versa.
A confluence of factors was at play, said State Street's head of macro strategy, Michael Metcalfe, with rising energy prices causing traders to bet on rate hikes, pushing up short-dated yields.

Monday, Taj Bradley did the same.
Bradley started his night by striking out a pair of batters in the first inning and finished it by striking out the final two batters of his seven-inning outing. In between, Bradley allowed just four hits in his start and just one run, which came on a solo shot from third baseman Hao-Yu Lee in the sixth inning.
Bradley finished with nine strikeouts in his outing and got a pair of key double plays ***** two of the times he found trouble in his outing.

The Twins' postseason hopes aren't dead yet, but a disastrous 8-17 August has put them firmly as a long shot. They are only four games out of a playoff spot, but teams like the Guardians, Blue Jays, and Orioles are trending in the right direction while the Twins and Mariners fade out of the picture.
At this point, the Twins need to pivot to 2027 evaluation mode and if a few bonus wins come, all the better. Walker Jenkins and Kaelen Culpepper should be in the lineup nearly every day from here on out, Gabriel Gonzalez should see every possible PA against lefties, and Emmanuel Rodriguez and Alan Roden likely need to start taking playing time away from Trevor Larnach and Josh Bell when rosters expand tomorrow.
Part of the issue recent Twins teams have run into is simply not knowing whether certain young players are truly ready to take on a bigger role, and they can't afford that heading into 2027 on a team in need of upgrades in both the lineup and pitching staff.
Speaking of pitching, after 2027, Joe Ryan, Pablo Lopez, Dean Kremer, and Bailey Ober are all free agents. Connor Prielipp and Zebby Matthews have shown flashes of brilliance this season, while Mick Abel and Kendry Rojas will be back from injury with nothing left to prove in AAA, to say nothing of pitching prospects like Riley Quick, Ryan Gallagher, and Adrian Bohorquez who will likely be ready at different points next season. Jeremy Zoll and Co. will need to sort through who of that group is worth keeping, who should be traded, who could thrive in the bullpen, and who (looking at you, Ober) maybe shouldn't be tendered a contract at all.

"I'm a guy that just puts a lot of pressure on myself to do well year in, year out," Makar said Monday at a news conference on the heels of a deal he signed late last week that will keep him with Colorado through the 2034-35 season. "It's going to make me even push myself a little bit more."
The 27-year-old Makar took becoming the league's first player to sign for more than $20 million a season in stride. He's already predicting the figure won't stand for long. In the past 10 days, the Twins have been swept by the Phillies, swept the Braves, and then were swept by the Padres. It's all or nothing in the dog days of summer and hopefully the win today puts them back in the "all" category.
The Twins got off to a great start and, unlike some other games in recent weeks, kept on adding throughout the middle innings to put this one out of reach for the opponent. Byron Buxton walked and Ryan Jeffers singled to put two men on for RBI machine Josh Bell. Bell crushed the first pitch he saw to left-center for what he thought was a three-run dong, but instead bounced off the very top of the wall for a double. Buxton scored but the A's got the ball back in quickly to keep Jeffers at third. Either way, the Twins took yet another early lead.

Bell also drove in Minnesota's second run, though this one came in a very different matter. After hitting his first one about 379.9 feet, this one went all of six feet. But with Buxton on third base, that was all the Twins needed to score.
The homeless A's rallied in the third to bring the game within one. Twins starter Zebby Matthews gave up back to back singles to rookie Henry Bolte and veteran Jeff McNeil to start the inning, but the damage was limited thanks to a Zack Gelof GIDP. With the 2026 MLB Draft now complete, we have four draft classes to evaluate what Brown and company have been able to do. Let's take a look at those classes, along with the international signings and trades, and see how the Astros' farm system compares to where it was when Brown took over in 2023.
Going into the 2023 season, the Astros had a decent farm system with two Top 100 prospects in Hunter Brown and Yainer Diaz, according to Baseball America. Diaz, however, was not included on MLB Pipeline's Top 100 list.
In the first round of the 2023 MLB Draft, the Astros held the 28th pick and selected shortstop Brice Matthews out of Nebraska. Matthews eventually broke into Pipeline's Top 100 in July 2025, ranking No. 98. Their second-round pick, Alonzo Tredwell, had a breakout 2025 season but has only pitched one in 2026.

Tommy John, the namesake and first recipient of baseball's most important surgery, died on Sunday, the New York Yankees announced. He was 83 years old.
John was reported to be entering hospice in early August, two years after he announced a battle with bladder cancer. He took the occasion to pen a goodbye letter to fans and other acquaintances on the day of the New York Yankees' Old-Timers' Day, where he was a frequent participant.
"While his incredible longevity and post-surgery achievements changed the fortunes and trajectory of countless athletes around the world, it also overshadowed his excellence as a pitcher, which included consecutive 20‑win seasons with the Yankees," the team's statement read. "We pause to remember the totality of his legacy — his competitiveness and skill, his penchant for conversation, his kind and gracious nature, and his stature as an athletic and medical pioneer."
Thanks to the surgery, John's career spanned 27 years, appearing for six different teams and racking up 288 wins. Only 25 pitchers in MLB history have more wins, and only two — known steroid user Roger Clemens and dead-ball era star Bobby Matthews — are not enshrined in the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
John remains a notable exclusion from Cooperstown, between his successful career and presence in the operating room that changed baseball.

On Saturday, Texas A&M landed its second commitment in the 2028 recruiting class as five-star quarterback Donald Tabron II chose the Aggies over LSU and Oregon, as expected based on his recent interviews and strong relationships with the coaching staff, especially coach Mike Elko and QB coach Joey Lynch.
Entering his junior season at Cass Technical in Detroit, Tabron led his squad to a 13-1 record last season, as the 6-foot-4, 190-pounder threw for 2,819 yards and 35 touchdowns. During his young career, totaling 24 appearances, he has thrown for 4,475 yards and 52 touchdowns.
Extremely productive, Tabron's accuracy, quick release, and impressive arm strength provide a blueprint for Elko and his staff, who will look to lock down the blue-chip signal-caller this time next year, but will gladly take his commitment as a sign that even if LSU and Oregon continue their pursuit, Texas A&M will remain his next home.
Just hours after committing to the Aggies, Tabron spoke to 247Sports insider Tom Loy, and, following the trend of several 2027 commits, including five-star offensive tackle Mark Matthews, Tabron stated, "Elko era, Gig 'em," when discussing his decision, noting the culture Mike Elko is building, while naming several fellow 2028 prospects that he would like to see the Aggies pursue.
On paper, Tabron looks like the future starting quarterback if he continues on the same path, and looks like a perfect fit under new offensive coordinator Holmon Wiggins. Here is the entire interview with 247Sports' Tom Loy.
