PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pittsburgh Penguins signed dependable forward Tommy Novak to a three-year contract extension on Friday. The deal, which begins during the 2027-28 season, carries an average annual value of $4.65 million.
The 29-year-old Novak collected 16 goals and 26 points in 82 games last season while helping the Penguins return to the playoffs following a three-year absence.
Novak, who bounced between the second and third line during his first full season in Pittsburgh, had been scheduled to become a free agent next summer. The extension instead keeps him in the fold for the rest of the decade and positions him to be part of the club's nucleus as it transitions out of the twilight of the Sidney Crosby/Evgeni Malkin/Kris Letang era.

In a recent post on X, renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano stated that Manchester City are eager to recruit Olympique Marseille keeper Geronimo Rulli. It has been mentioned that the Mancunian giants are keen on signing the Argentine goalie after identifying him as an ideal replacement for James Trafford this off-season.
Rulli enjoyed a decent campaign at Marseille recently after he produced a run of solid displays for them in Ligue 1. The 34-year-old conceded 52 goals and kept nine clean sheets in 39 appearances for the French outfit last season in various competitions.
The Argentine talent is currently one of the most experienced keepers in his homeland. Hence, Man City would do well to get a deal done for him later this year.
His current contract at the French club will run out at the end of next season, which could open the door for the Mancunian club to land him in this transfer window.

MK Dons have signed winger Sam Silvera on a free transfer after he was released by Middlesbrough at the end of last season.
The 25-year-old was a first-choice player under former Boro boss Rob Edwards at the beginning of the 2025-26 season but was unable to retain a regular place in the side after suffering a foot injury in February.
He is an Australian international, earning eight caps, but was not part of the Socceroos' 26-man World Cup squad this summer.
Silvera made 65 appearances for Middlesbrough across three seasons, scoring eight goals.
He becomes MK Dons' sixth signing of the summer transfer window as they prepare for life back in League One, their first season in the third tier since the 2022-23 campaign.

Sheffield Wednesday have signed goalkeeper Ashley Maynard-Brewer on a one-year deal and Hull City striker Mason Burstow on a season-long loan deal.
Maynard-Brewer, 27, was a free agent after leaving Dundee United earlier this summer.
Burstow, 22, spent last season on loan in League One with Bolton and scored 12 goals in 53 appearances as they won promotion to the Championship.
"After a breakout season last year with Bolton Wanderers, Mason is a terrific signing for us," sporting director Simon Wilson told the club website.
Maynard-Brewer, who made 70 league appearances for Charlton before moving to Dundee United in January, is the second goalkeeper to join the Owls in as many days after Connal Trueman signed on Thursday.

Romelu Lukaku is about to return from his post-World Cup vacations, and the conversations to sort out his Napoli future, involving also Massimiliano Allegri, will ramp up. The parties are distant from finding a solution, Gazzetta dello Sport informs.
The striker has no plans to spend a campaign backing up Rasmus Hojlund, who was recently bought out for over €40M. The new Partenopei gaffer has exclusively rehearsed schemes featuring just one striker so far. The gaffer has frequently utilized 3-5-2 in his career, but they have a few wingers to employ.
Napoli can't give Lukaku the prominent role he aspires to. At the same time, they have no interest in keeping a reserve with a €11M gross salary. The center-forward seemed surely destined to leave after last season's events, but he had changed his tune earlier in the summer.
The Azzurri suggested extending his contract to dilute his wages to make them more manageable, but they were rebuffed. His exit isn't easy to orchestrate, considering his age, demands, injury history, and €10/12M valuation. The side aims to avoid a loss on its balance sheet. The team is hoping his performances across the pond will help in that regard. He wasn't a full-time starter for Belgium, but still made his presence felt with three goals and one ******* ist.
He's proven he can be dangerous in small doses, but the club also has to weigh other stuff, especially the economic side. Everything points toward an exit, with perhaps Saudi Arabia or the MLS coming to the rescue, if the Azzurri aren't too rigid on his price tag. But, as often happens with him, it'll get messy first.

Wales have finished in a disappointing 10th place at the Commonwealth Games after losing 63-53 to Tonga in their ranking play-off, two places lower than four years ago.
The Welsh Feathers ended their 2022 Birmingham campaign eighth and will leave Glasgow after another frustrating result in a campaign that produced one win and five defeats, having only beaten Trinidad and Tobago in the group stage.
The Welsh Feathers started brightly against Tonga, with captain Bethan **** feeding goal shooter Georgia Rowe well in attack to lead 10-14 at the quarter-time break.
Tonga rallied in the second, forcing Wales into errors from which they capitalised to bring the scores back level at 29–29 after 30 minutes.
The pressure on Wales continued as Tonga took control, netting 19 goals for the second quarter in a row and stretching their lead to 10 at three-quarter time.

Tottenham Hotspur have emerged as a plausible destination for Marcus Rashford as his Manchester United future moves further out of view, with talkSPORT reporting that an offer in the region of £30 million may be enough to secure a deal this summer.
That figure alone will catch attention across the market. Rashford remains a high-profile name, an England international with elite-level experience and a recent campaign on loan at Barcelona that produced respectable numbers, 14 goals and 11 ******* ists in 49 appearances. Yet the wider context matters. Barcelona declined to make the move permanent and instead committed £69 million to Anthony Gordon, leaving Rashford needing a new solution.
The key point here is that both player and club appear to be working towards a clean break. A reintegration at Old Trafford is not thought to be under consideration, which places the emphasis firmly on finding a buyer capable of meeting a transfer fee and absorbing a significant salary.
Arsenal have previously been mentioned, but the latest indication is that Tottenham may represent the more realistic north London option. As stated on talkSPORT, "I think if he goes anywhere in London, I'm keeping an eye on Tottenham," before the suggestion followed, "I could see that deal happening. Roberto De Zerbi believes that he can get the best out of Marcus Rashford."

The Washington Commanders made a good amount of offseason moves in 2026, including bringing in new offensive and defensive coordinators. One of general manager Adam Peters' biggest goals was to fix the defense, and that's where most of the Commanders' roster changes took place.
As teams enter training camp and the Hall of Fame game is a week away, The Athletic released a new set of power rankings ahead of the 2026 season. The Commanders checked in at 23.
Last season: 5-12Last ranking: 26What's new? The defenseWashington signed 11 defensive free agents, and more than half of them are probably going to start, an admission that QB Jayden Daniels' return to full health won't be enough without a better defense. The Commanders were 27th in the league last year in points allowed (26.5), and coach Dan Quinn enters the season on the hot seat.
We won't go so far as to say that Dan Quinn is on the hot seat, but if the Commanders don't perform better in 2026 than they did in 2025, there will be serious discussions about his ability to get the job done. But context matters, and if the Commanders suffer a slew of injuries as they did in 2025, it's unlikely that Quinn's job is in jeopardy.
Still, signing that many free agents, plus adding Sonny Styles in the draft, makes for a difficult path forward. These players have never been a unit before this season, so it's not just about preparing them for the game plan on the field; they have to form connections with each other. Those connections build trust. That trust allows players to anticipate each other's moves and adjust accordingly.

Rangers are interested in bringing Frosinone attacker Fares Ghedjemis to Ibrox this summer, according to Sky Sports. Bears manager Derek McInnes has been strengthening his Rangers squad this summer as he looks to win the Scottish Premiership next term. The France-born Ghedjemis has now emerged as a target for the Light Blues after Celtic failed with a bid during the last winter transfer window. The 23-year-old Algerian international bagged 15 goals to help Frosinone secure Serie A promotion, which has impressed Rangers.
Ghedjemis featured at the World Cup and a move to Ibrox could now be on the cards. Rangers are now pushing for a deal and are making a strong move as he is their first target to strengthen in attack.
The Frenchman has several suitors keen on recruiting his services this summer, but the Bears appear to be one of the favourites to sign him. Frosinone will have to start looking elsewhere for attacking reinforcements as they look to impress in the Italian top-flight without the Rangers target.

Hugo Larsson sees no reason to leave Eintracht Frankfurt this summer. The Swedish midfielder was previously very close to leaving the club for the Saudi Pro League, but he has now ruled out any possibility for this summer.
"I'm really very happy here. My girlfriend feels comfortable too as she loves Frankfurt. I have no plans to leave. It's the same story every year." said Larsson in an interview with FR (via Christopher Michel).
The 22-year-old missed out on playing at the World Cup as Sweden's coach Graham Potter omitted him in an unexpected decision. Larsson scored 10 goals in 119 appearances for the Eagles since joining them from Malmo.
The central midfielder also discussed his preferences in terms of playing position. "I already noticed at the start of the last season that my role would change. I was more of a number six. That's not how I became so successful in this club.
"I became successful because I had a 'free' role. At the side of Ellyes (Skhiri) I had a lot of freedom. I'm confident enough to say that I can ******* s where I can best help the team and where they need me. As a holding six, you don't have those freedoms."

Lazio's hopes of signing Spanish striker Carlos Espi from Levante have faded, with Real Madrid pulling off the coup.
In recent weeks, the Biancocelesti were said to be tracking the 21-year-old centre-forward who played an instrumental role in Levante's survival last season. The young bomber netted 11 goals in 26 appearances, including decisive strikes towards the end of the campaign.
In addition to Lazio, the Spaniard had also attracted interest from the Premier League, with Hull City also on this trail. But on Thursday evening, Espi completed an out-of-the-blue transfer to Real Madrid, who identified him as the right replacement for Fulham-bound Gonzalo Garcia. The 15-time European champions confirmed the move with the following statement (via ESPN).
Real Madrid C.F. and Levante U.D. have agreed to the transfer of Carlos Espí, who will be tied to our club for the next five seasons, until June 30, 2031
Unfortunately for Lazio fans, missing out on transfer targets has become the norm rather than the exception. This summer, the management failed to finalize a deal with Bayern Munich for Jonathan Asp Jensen, who was keen to join the Italian capital side, but eventually had to accept a move to Deportivo La Coruña.

Sky Germany reports that FC Augsburg attacker Mert Kömür is open to moving to England amid increasing interest from Hull City. Hull's pursuit of the 21-year-old Germany U21 international first emerged earlier this week. The Premier League club have now reportedly opened discussions with Kömür, his family, and his representatives over a potential summer transfer out of the Bundesliga.
Augsburg have been informed of the talks and are fundamentally willing to sanction Kömür's departure. A transfer fee of approximately €20 million is presently being discussed, though Hull have not yet opened formal negotiations with the Bundesliga club.
Kömür remains under contract through 2029 after receiving a new long-term Augsburg deal last summer. The Dachau native registered two goals and five ***** ists in 28 Bundesliga appearances last season, starting 18 league fixtures. His flexibility enables him to operate as an attacking midfielder, on the right, behind a central striker or as a false nine.
Several impressive tours of duty with Germany's U21s have also strengthened Kömür's standing as a potential future senior international. Augsburg's willingness to discuss his departure does not necessarily mean that Hull will be able to negotiate a reduced fee.
The Fuggerstädter recently demonstrated their readiness to reject an attractive package when they broke off talks with Crystal Palace over Chrislain Matsima. Palace had raised their proposed package for the French defender to approximately €25 million, with the total value potentially reaching €30 million.

It's all starting again! To kick off the new ADMIRAL Women's Bundesliga season, SpG Südburgenland/TSV Hartberg will be visiting the Red Bull Football Academy, where – as in the previous season – all matches can be attended free of charge. Kick-off is on Saturday at 14:30 CEST.
Laola1 Live stream
With their usual ambitions and some new faces, our FC Red Bull Salzburg Women, led by captain Katja Wienerroither, are heading into their new campaign with confidence. In addition to the already announced new signings, Lena Triendl is joining us. The Tyrolean native won the double last season with FK Austria Vienna, providing twelve goal contributions in domestic football.
Our team were drawn to face SV Telfs in the ÖFB Women's Cup on the first weekend of September. Before that, however, the first league matches are on the agenda. Lilla Sipos, the star player of the past Bundesliga season, has left Burgenland for Sturm Graz – a setback for the bottom-placed team in the 2025/26 season, who only remained in the Austrian top flight due to severe financial difficulties at Neulengbach.
Dusan Pavlovic's team is aiming to add another chapter to their success story after last season's achievements – qualifying for the Championship Group and reaching the Cup Final. The upcoming match against the combined team is a welcome opportunity as we scored more goals against them than any other opponents in 2025/26 (with a 5-2 and 4-2 win). The match will be broadcast on both ÖFB TV and Laola1, the new media partner of the ADMIRAL Women's Bundesliga. Florian Grabner will referee the clash.

Real Madrid are weighing up a move for Levante striker Carlos Espi in a shock swoop, as per transfer reporter Fabrizio Romano.
Espi was one of the breakout stars in La Liga last season, scoring 11 goals in 25 appearances.
The towering striker demonstrated significant aerial dominance, physical capacity and predatory instincts in the 18-yard box.
Madrid are prepared to let Gonzalo Garcia leave the club and move to the Premier League.
They have been watching Espi closely for a few years. They previously sought to bring him into their academy in 2023.

Liverpool's latest transfer thinking appears to have turned towards Bradley Barcola, with the Paris Saint-Germain winger emerging as a major target as planning continues for life after Mohamed Salah. The idea is easy to understand on talent alone. Barcola is young, quick, refined in possession and already seasoned at elite level. Yet once the excitement settles, the shape of the move becomes more complicated.
Liverpool are preparing an opening bid for the France international, who is valued by PSG at around £145 million. With performance-related clauses reportedly capable of taking the package to €150 million, this is the sort of deal that alters the landscape of a window. It would not be a speculative addition or a market opportunity seized on a whim. It would be a declaration, one that places Barcola at the centre of Liverpool's attacking future.
That is precisely why the positional debate matters so much. Salah's departure at the end of last season left a structural absence as much as an emotional one. Replacing his goals is one challenge, replacing his function another. Liverpool lost a right-sided forward who shaped the geometry of every game. The question now is whether Barcola answers that need, or whether he solves a different problem entirely.
There is no dispute over the player's ability. Jamie Carragher made that clear when discussing the move, saying: "He's a great player, there's no doubt about that – I'd love to get Barcola at Liverpool,". But his wider concern goes to the architecture of the squad. Liverpool, in his view, are better stocked on the left than they are on the right, which makes a huge investment in Barcola feel curious unless it is part of a broader redesign.
That concern has substance. Cody Gakpo offers a reliable option from the left, Rio Ngumoha remains one of the club's more intriguing younger attackers and Víctor Munoz has also been added. In isolation, signing another left-sided player of elite pedigree sounds attractive. In practical terms, though, elite squads still require a certain balance. Too much accumulation on one flank can create a shortage elsewhere, particularly when the outgoing player was as singular as Salah.

Michael Olise's meteoric rise has transformed him from one of Europe's most exciting young wingers into a player that virtually every elite club would love to have. After a spectacular season with Bayern Munich, the French international has become a regular feature in Ballon d'Or discussions and is widely regarded as one of the most entertaining players in world football. Despite inevitable transfer speculation, former Chelsea ****** istant manager Jody Morris believes Olise has found the perfect environment in Munich and sees little reason for the winger to leave anytime soon.
"When you get to that level, there's no rush to come back for Michael Olise unless he wants to return home. He is suited to the continental style of play. He has already produced in the Premier League and can have his pick of where to go. I imagine Bayern will give him a huge new deal to stave off interest," Morris told BOYLE Sports, who offer the latest football odds. "I think everyone in world football would want to sign him. He is the type of player who gets you on the edge of your seat. I haven't seen a player open up defenses like that in a long time. Lionel Messi is the only one similar in that regard. He will be disappointed to have missed chances in the tournament. He is my favorite footballer to watch at the moment."
Those are lofty comparisons, but they reflect just how highly Olise is regarded after his breakout campaign. His blend of creativity, vision, close control, and end product makes him one of the rare players capable of deciding matches with a single moment of brilliance. Under Vincent Kompany, Olise has flourished into the centerpiece of Bayern Munich's attack while continuing to improve every aspect of his game.
Morris also poured cold water on any suggestion that Chelsea could realistically lure Olise back to England.
"Chelsea would need to make unbelievable strides to even be in the conversation for a player like Michael Olise. We tried to get him from Palace before, and not getting him is what led us to signing Cole Palmer. Michael Olise plays in any World XI for me right now. The signing of Eden Hazard at the time was huge, and he went on to be a great," Morris said. "For me, Hazard is the greatest individual player to ever play for Chelsea in terms of talent, though he's third on the overall list behind John Terry and Frank Lampard. Olise is the closest we would get to someone who can entertain the Stamford Bridge crowd while also producing numbers. He has a great balance of being great to watch with flair, but he doesn't shirk his production in the final third. He still manages goals and ****** ists while floating around the pitch. He is a phenomenal player."

Martin O'Neill's side have paid £11 million for Kasper Høgh, one of the most sought-after strikers in European football following his outstanding performances on the biggest stages, particularly in the Champions League and Europa League.
Celtic needed a top centre-forward after three consecutive seasons without one of their players finishing as the Scottish Premiership's top scorer. The last player to achieve it was Kyogo Furuhashi.

Ajax are through to the next round of the Conference League after a demolition job on Serbian side Vojvodina. They will be joined in the next round of the competition by FC Twente, who ended up losing out in the Europa League to Hungarian side Ferencvaros. Despite the hosts being down to 10 men, FC Twente were unable to capitalise and will now drop down a competition.
Things had been going badly for the Dutch side with Ferencvaros 2-0 up after 50 minutes. The Hungarian home side were already down to 10 men at this point after Belgian midfielder Philippe Rommens had been sent off in the first half. It took FC Twente until the final 10 minutes to put real pressure on, with goals from Wout Weghorts and Lucas Vennegoor of Hesselink. Yet these came too little too late for FC Twente to equalise on aggregate and they ended up losing 4-3 overall. Twente will now face Slovakian side DAC 1904 Dunajska Streda in the Conference League.
Ajax had no problem in their second leg against Vojvodina. The Amsterdam side won 4-1 on the night, 8-2 on aggregate thanks to a hat-trick from Oscar Gloukh. Ajax will now face Irish side Shelbourne who beat Estonian side Nomme Kalju over two legs.

President Giuseppe Marotta and everyone at FC Internazionale Milano stand in solidarity with the Baresi family and his brother Beppe during this time of grief.Franco Baresi has passed away, taking with him one of the figures who most defined the history of the Milan derby through consistency and excellence. AC Milan captain, team leader and club icon, he built his career on defensive intelligence and leadership that earned recognition even from his opponents.
Born in Travagliato on 8 May 1960, Baresi made 719 appearances and scored 33 goals for the Rossoneri, spending 20 years exclusively with Milan, between 1977 and 1997. In the 35 derbies he played against Inter, his name became synonymous with composure and reliability in a rivalry that was always filled with intensity.
Within that rivalry, the strongest bond was the one with Giuseppe Baresi. Two brothers, two captains, who grew up together and later found themselves wearing opposite colours, yet remained united by a respect that was never in question. For them, the derby was never just a match: it was a direct challenge, a responsibility, but also a balance to be protected. "We tried to leave it outside the door. There was always the concern that neither of us would get injured," Franco recalled. And then there was that almost everyday normality before the game: joking together, a way of easing the tension before 90 minutes that meant much more than just a football match for Milan.
On 2 March 1980, the day San Siro was named after Giuseppe Meazza, that story was captured in one defining image: the Baresi brothers facing each other inside a stadium that was becoming an even stronger symbol of the city and its rivalry. A photograph that tells the story of the derby better than many words. The final image, once again inside San Siro: the Olympic Torch ceremony, carried together with Beppe Bergomi. An endless derby, a bond with the city that remains unbreakable.
From Inter and the entire Nerazzurri world, the memory of a great opponent, a protagonist of the battles that helped shape the very meaning of the Milan derby. With respect.

OXNARD, Calif. (AP) — When Dak Prescott arrived at training camp Tuesday, he wore a vintage t-shirt celebrating the Dallas Cowboys' last Super Bowl win as a statement of intent.
After 10 years in the NFL without a meaningful playoff run for an organization that has not claimed a championship since after the 1995 season, their star quarterback is ready to end those droughts through his deeds, words, and even wardrobe choices.
"To go into training camp and to go into the season to say that those are our goals, I mean, it'd be stupid or we'd be remiss not to own that, and take accountability in that, and take pride in saying this is what we want to be and what we want to do," Prescott said Thursday.
Prescott admitted to being "definitely less patient" when it comes to the lack of postseason success, his angst rising after missing the playoffs each of the past two campaigns. He has a 2-5 record in playoff games and never reached an NFC championship game, something the Cowboys have not done over the previous 30 seasons.
However, Prescott believes the pieces are in place for the organization to move past those struggles. He expects a potent offense to be even better in its second season under head coach Brian Schottenheimer by benefitting from improved continuity on the offensive line and further growth from the pairing of standout wide receivers CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens in their the second year together.

David Gray has gone from being slated to serenaded by Hibernian fans in the ****** e of seven days.
Make no mistake, the head coach was under pressure after his side's torrid display in Kosovo last week.
Supporters who had travelled to eastern Europe made it abundantly clear what they thought of their team's 2-0 first-leg defeat by Malisheva with their Conference League hopes on the brink.
The head coach stressed the result - and the manner of it - were unacceptable, but the only way to answer doubters is on the park.
In the second half at Easter Road on Thursday, with Hibs four goals to the good on the night and on their way to an aggregate victory, Gray's name was sung to the rafters.

Megan Keith's grandad had two goals. To make it to 100 years old and then to watch the Commonwealth Games.
Dr Murray Kirkwood achieved both - and even saw his granddaughter win a bronze medal in the women's 5000m at Scotstoun.
He's no stranger to the ground. As an ardent Glasgow Warriors fan, he delivered the match ball before Franco Smith's side hosted Benetton in March, days before he became a centenarian.
He's had some memorable nights round these parts, but watching Megan tear to the podium should eclipse them. Well, so she hopes...
"He's a bit of a phenomenon," Keith, who finished a disappointing ninth in the 10,000m earlier in the week, told BBC Scotland.

England's netballers reached the Commonwealth Games semi-finals after producing a pulsating comeback to beat South Africa 58-54.
With both sides tied on six points but the Roses ahead of the Proteas on goal average in pool A's second spot going into the game, England had to avoid defeat to progress.
Elmere van der Berg was in fine form early on to fire South Africa into a six-goal lead at the end of the first quarter with 16 of her nation's 17 goals to leave England facing an uphill task.
But some excellent and aggressive defensive work by second-quarter substitute Halimat Adio helped England spring multiple counter-attacks to claw their way back to just 29-28 down at the halfway stage.
The Roses started to take control in the third quarter, opening up a seven-goal lead at one stage before the Proteas netted three times in quick succession to go into the final 15 minutes 43-39 behind.

Real Madrid have moved fast to solve their number nine problem. With Gonzalo García on his way to Fulham, the club triggered Carlos Espí's €25 million release clause at Levante within hours, tying the 21-year-old to the Bernabéu until June 2031.
Here's what Real Madrid fans need to know about their new forward.
Carlos Espí Escrihuela was born on July 24, 2005, in Tavernes de la Valldigna, a small town on the Valencian coast. He joined Levante's academy in 2022 from local side UD Alzira and made his first-team debut in February 2024, aged 18, in a Segunda División fixture against Racing de Ferrol.
He was part of the group that helped drag Levante back into La Liga, contributing six goals in 36 appearances during the promotion campaign, but it was this past season, in the top flight, that he made his name with 11 goals in 13 starts, a Player of the Month award in March, and the league's Best Under-23 Player prize. He is also a Spain youth international, capped at both U-19 and U-20 level.
At 6ft4in tall, he is a physical presence up top, a target man profile who fits the archetype of a modern number nine as much as a poacher.
