PITTSBURGH (AP) — The vibes for Mike McCarthy and Eli Heidenreich over the last few months have been immaculate. How could they not be?
The chance for McCarthy to lead his hometown team brought the first-year Pittsburgh Steelers coach to tears when he was hired in January. The image last April of Heidenreich walking onto the draft stage in full Naval dress uniform outside Acrisure Stadium — just a few miles from the Mount Lebanon neighborhood where he grew up — felt like something out of a movie.
Their respective homecomings have provided plenty of "fairy tale" narratives during an eventful offseason for the typically low-key Steelers. And while there will be a little bit of "hey, is this really happening?" on Thursday night when they walk onto the field for the first time as the Steelers host Green Bay in the preseason opener, they're both aware of the reality check that awaits under the lights.
"Naturally, there's some people that might ******* ume that it was like you said, like a hometown pick or whatever, whatever someone wants to say," Heidenreich said. "But I'm here to play football, and that's it."
Good thing, because evolving from a seventh-round flyer following a record-setting career at Navy — where he set program marks for career receiving yards and receiving touchdowns — into an NFL roster spot will take some doing. ******* ody knows that more than the 6-foot, 206-pound Heidenreich, who politely dismissed comparisons between himself and San Francisco 49ers running back and 2023 NFL Offense Player of the Year Christian McCaffrey.

Kyle Whittingham's first season at Michigan is beginning under a cloud of scandal that is shocking the state.
No, he's not hacking into female students' photo libraries or illegally scouting opposing teams or sleeping with his administrative ******* istant. Those are garden-variety scandals in the Michigan program over the last few years.
In the eyes of some Michigan fans, Whittingham is committing a far more serious offense: He doesn't hate Ohio State enough.

The Michigan-Ohio State rivalry is one of the absolute best in all of sports. No one denies this! At least they haven't in the past. Currently, it's a bit unclear what the heck is going on as the Wolverines starting quarterback and head coach are both out there downplaying the significance of The Game.
Kyle Whittingham, about to embark on his first year in Ann Arbor, admitted he doesn't hate the Buckeyes during Big Ten Media Days. Those comments caused him to clarify his position a bit.

Look, the logical part of our brains should tell us that hating one's rival is not a prerequisite for success. Coaches on both sides of the Michigan-Ohio State battle have struggled to post victories even though they have carried a healthy hatred for the other side deep in their souls. Players who honestly didn't care about anything have become legends for their play on the field. Because ultimately, only the wins and losses matter.
Or so Michigan fans can keep telling themselves.

Dame Dash isn't pleased that his bankruptcy proceedings are being reported on by The Breakfast Club host Loren Lorosa.
In a post shared on social media, Dash said that he was made aware of Lorosa's latest post detailing his bankruptcy case during a meeting.
"They said they won't let me go bankrupt; they don't believe it," he shared, while posing in front of a car in a garage. "No one reported that. … But what The Breakfast Club did report was when I asked my daughter for some money, and now you're reporting whatever bull s**t is going with bankruptcy… I just feel like y'all make it too obvious. Why don't you ever talk about any of the good stuff? Are you guys trying to line me up? Are you guys trying to amplify a narrative?"
He suggested that there's rarely any reporting going on with anything good that happens in his life, and said that ups and downs are just part of business.

India's growing injury crisis has raised fresh questions over the functioning of the BCCI's Centre of Excellence (CoE), with former cricketer Mohammad Kaif expressing surprise that the world's richest cricket board has struggled to recruit some of the world's leading medical and rehabilitation professionals.

The latest setback came with Sai Sudharsan being ruled out of India's upcoming two-Test series against Sri Lanka due to a toe injury. He joins Jasprit ****** rah, Harshit Rana, Nitish ****** ar Reddy and Washington Sundar on the list of players unavailable for the Sri Lanka series because of injuries.

The repeated injury setbacks have frustrated the BCCI, particularly as several players have had to make trips to the CoE in Bengaluru for rehabilitation. The issue also came into focus when BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia travelled to Bengaluru to discuss the situation with CoE head VVS Laxman.
Laxman, during a press conference, revealed that the BCCI has been facing difficulties in finding the right personnel for the CoE. According to him, the board had approached several candidates, but some potential appointments fell through at the final stage.

The revelation has now drawn a strong reaction from Kaif, who questioned how the BCCI, despite its enormous financial resources, has been unable to bring some of the best medical professionals and physiotherapists into its setup.

"There was a statement from VVS Laxman that they had approached several people. Those things were being worked out, but at the last minute, they turned it down. So, what I am trying to say is that whatever is happening needs to be fixed. I am not an expert on this. The experts appointed by the BCCI need to do their job. But I am telling you that it is having a significant impact," Kaif said on his YouTube channel.
Kaif admitted that he was particularly surprised by the situation given the financial strength of the BCCI and the attractiveness of working with Indian cricket.

"Now, I am surprised because so many people are eager to work with the BCCI. We have so much money that if we call someone, they will come running. They do, don't they? Just look at the players. Players leave their countries' matches to come and play in the IPL. They come, don't they?" Kaif said.

He further questioned why the BCCI had not been able to finalise contracts with leading physiotherapists and medical experts.

"So, I was a little surprised that we haven't been able to work things out with some of the world's best physiotherapists and medical professionals and get them to work with the BCCI. I am surprised because we pay so much. We offer such good contracts. If someone comes and works here, they are bound to make a lot of money. They get paid very well," he added.

The timing of the concerns is significant, with India heading into a two-Test series against Sri Lanka without several key players. The series begins in Galle on August 15.

Indiana Fever All-Star guard Caitlin Clark publicly backed Stephanie White after Indiana's second-year head coach was booed on the team's home court at the Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis on Tuesday, Aug. 11.
The boo birds rained down on White ahead of a 106-92 win over the New York Liberty, which marked the Fever's first game since Chicago Sky guard DiJonai Carrington's hard foul on Sophie Cunningham and subsequent "White Privilege" post Aug. 8 reignited conversations about player safety and race. Some Fever fans felt White didn't adequately defend Cunningham, with Indiana Lt. Gov. Micah Beckwith going as far as calling for White to be fired.
"I told (Stephanie White) that before the game, there was no way we were losing this game for her. And it's tough. That's my head coach. I hated that our fans booed her before the game. That made me a little sick, to be honest," Clark said in her postgame remarks. "It's professional sports, people are going to boo, but at the end of the day... we're going to ride for her and we're always going to have her back and that's never going to tear our locker room apart."
Clark added, "I just love her and I feel for her because I know it can be a lot at times and she does a great job a lot of times blocking it out, but there's other moments where it can get under your skin and that's just being human and that's just life."

It appears the latest mantra coming out of Ann Arbor is that "The Game" is just that, another game, however that won't be how the rivalry is suddenly seen by the fanbases.
Michigan quarterback Bryce Underwood was asked recently how the Ohio State matchup differs from others on the Wolverines' schedule, and his response may have come as a surprise to those who follow the rivalry.
"It's just another game," Underwood said. "Just, we're guys in a different color. That's how I see it."
Underwood's words come after newly hired head coach Kyle Whittingham has generated his own controversy about the rivalry's intensity. Whittingham appeared at Big Ten Media Days and mentioned that a rivalry can be emotional and intense without a "hatred factor," adding he believed that hate did not have a place in it.
The tone coming out of Ann Arbor is hard to ignore. Michigan's quarterback calls it another game and the new head coach says the hatred is unnecessary. Neither statement is inherently wrong, but the Buckeyes won't need any sort of extra motivation when Michigan visits Ohio State.

After a joint practice with the Tennessee ******* ans there's still no clarity for the San Francisco 49ers on their left guard battle according to 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan.
Shanahan on Tuesday spoke with reporters after the 49ers wrapped up their joint practice with the ******* ans and indicated that nothing changed in the race for the fifth and final starting spot on San Francisco's offensive line. Entering practice it was veteran Robert Jones and second-year player Connor Colby who were the presumed frontrunners at the position with rookie Carver Willis potentially making his way into the mix. That was where Shanahan said things still stood after practice.
"I think it's too early to say," Shanahan said. "There definitely is a battle there. It's open for anybody. Those guys would probably be the lead at it. Love to get Carver in that, too. Him missing a week or whatever it was with his concussion made him out of it a little bit, but he's been out two practices in a row. It's still early. We want to see those guys in the games, too, but it's definitely a battle for us to see who gets that spot."
There's a distinct difference between an open battle with multiple good players and one hasn't been able to separate themselves, and an open battle with multiple players who aren't good enough to step into the vacancy. Colby and Jones have had some issues with the starting group, and now Shanahan is potentially resting the team's hopes on a fifth-round draft pick who is changing positions after playing offensive tackle in college.
San Francisco won't need to nail down a definite starter until Week 1, but the fact they're inside of a month to go until their regular season opener and the coaching staff is still awaiting a player to put a stranglehold on the starting LG job is not a great sign entering their preseason opener.

The Indiana Fever head coach went off in a roughly two-minute address to reporters ahead of their game against the New York Liberty on Tuesday night in Indianapolis. White erupted while both defending the call made after a hard foul on Indiana's Sophie Cunningham and lighting up those who have taken over the discourse in the league in recent weeks.
"The hate, the fear-mongering, the divisiveness, the stuff that is trying to hijack our league will not win," White said while pounding the table. "It won't win. We are united. We are connected. We will not be divided.
"Every day, these women put their ****** on the line. Every day. When they go low, we go high. Love will win! Grace will win! Humility will win, and kindness will win. I stand by them, I will always stand by them. Everybody else can go to ****** ."
White then grabbed her paper and stormed off. She did not answer any questions before the game.

Lucy has revealed she has incurable stage four breast cancer.
The actor, who is best known for playing Dawn Tinsley in The Office, shared that she was diagnosed a year and a half ago when the disease had already metastasised to her bones, making it too late for chemotherapy.
Davis wrote on Instagram on Tuesday, "As of now, I'm trying to live out whatever might be left of my life in as fun a way as I possibly can.
"I always like to find the teachable moments in anything negative that happens. And cancer has not disappointed in that regard; there's a lot I have learned from it, and I'm grateful for that.
"As some of you will know, the pain can really be something else. Standing and walking for too long a time can be hard, and I need to use a wheelchair sometimes (so if you see me toddling around in one, feel free to give me a push!)."
Davis, the daughter of the comedian Jasper Carrott, noted that humour was one of the things that had helped.

PHILADELPHIA – Myktybek Orolbai is taking it step by step, but he plans to climb the ultimate mountain of the UFC.
Riding a three-fight winning streak, Orolbai (16-2-1 MMA, 5-1 UFC) is breaking out the English – and it's pretty good – ahead of his UFC 330 bout on Saturday vs. Jeremiah Wells. The bout takes place in Philadelphia, two hours from where Wells (13-4-1 MMA, 5-2 UFC) grew up.
Enemy territory? Orolbai is used to it.
"No problem," Orolbai said. "I'm everyday in the gym training two to three times, brother. My second fight was a Brazilian fighter. It was Elves Brener. (Same with) Tofiq Musayev (in) Azerbaijan, Baku. Whatever country, I go. No problem, brother. I like my opponent, country, and fight. I like. I'm ready."
While he doesn't mind traveling, experiencing all of the homecomings has made him want one of his own. The UFC has never been to Kyrgyzstan, but Orolbai hopes to change that. Give him a couple years, he said.

Justin Rose is proud that, having turned 46 less than two weeks ago, he enters the FedEx Cup playoffs at No. 24 and bucking the PGA Tour trend of pros in their 40s — especially the late 40s — trying to hang on to whatever status that they can manage until becoming eligible at age 50.
Rose won earlier this year at the Farmers Insurance and nearly won the Masters in April and shows little sign of losing anything off his fastball.
"I'm not really interested in sticking around and just making up the numbers and waiting for the Champions Tour or whatever that might be," he said on Tuesday in a press conference ahead of the FedEx St. Jude Championship in Memphis. "For me, it's about just really pushing myself to stay elite, to stay playing at the top end of the game, and to kind of keep giving myself and putting myself in with experiences that will create lifetime memories.
"That's only going to happen by playing in the biggest tournaments and at the highest level. That's my motivation, and if I'm not achieving that, I would sort of really question why I'm making the sacrifice away from family and friends and all the other great things that I have going on in my life."

Elaborating on her illness, Davis pointed out how she had a small lump on her breast. However, since the lump was small, the 53-year-old ignored it, which led to the cancer spreading further. Advising her followers, Davis asked them not to disregard any symptoms and get checked immediately.

Dylan Sprouse has revealed that one of the rare celebrity encounters that left him genuinely starstruck also changed his relationship with cigarettes. The actor recently looked back on an unexpected interaction with David Lynch, explaining why the brief encounter stayed with him long after the two went their separate ways.
During an Aug. 4 appearance on the Not Skinny But Not Fat podcast, Sprouse recalled having dinner at Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles with Barbara Palvin and friends when he heard Lynch speaking at a nearby table.
Sprouse, a longtime Lynch fan, said he immediately recognized the filmmaker's voice. Palvin encouraged him to introduce himself, but Sprouse resisted because he did not want to interrupt Lynch while he was eating.
Instead, he stepped outside for a cigarette. A short time later, Lynch entered the smoking area and asked Sprouse for a cigarette and a light. Sprouse handed him both.
The Chateau Marmont encounter soon took an unexpected turn when Laura Dern joined Lynch. Sprouse recalled watching Lynch pull a fresh pack of cigarettes and a lighter from his own pocket for Dern, leaving him to wonder whether the director had actually needed to borrow anything from him.

Sometimes, when we get an unrelated cameo on Hard Knocks, it's a juicy little tidbit that is sure to spark some unintended conversation. That's exactly what might happen with a clip from the latest episode featuring San Antonio Spurs general manager Brian Wright and head coach Mitch Johnson chatting with Seattle Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald.
The discussion concerns Wright and Johnson expanding on the Spurs' initial process in trying to get young phenom Victor Wembanyama onto their team. Wright and Johnson claimed that the Spurs knew Wembanyama would be special when they saw him at age 16. From there, they put a "plan in motion" to "turn the team over" about a year later in an effort to put themselves in as good a position as possible to draft Wembanyama.
Hmm, turn the team over? You mean ... make the Spurs worse for draft lottery odds? The Spurs notably had a paltry 22-60 record in the season they earned the No. 1 overall pick that allowed them to draft Wembanyama. If I didn't know any better, that sure sounds like ... what amounts to tanking! I don't think the NBA would retroactively punish the Spurs for this, even in light of a reformed anti-tanking draft lottery plan.
However, I still can't imagine this is something San Antonio wanted out in the open because of the potential bad optics:
Whatever the truth is here, I'm sure that franchises like the Spurs are so grateful that draft lottery reform came after they were able to position themselves for a new MVP-caliber superstar like Wembanyama.

OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP) — Baltimore Ravens cornerback and 2024 first-round draft pick Nate Wiggins was carted off the field roughly an hour into Tuesday's practice after suffering a left leg injury.
Wiggins tangled with rookie wide receiver Ja'Kobi Lane during one-on-one drills and fell to the turf. He appeared unable to put weight on the leg as he entered the team facility.
Asked about the potential seriousness of the injury, first-year head coach Jesse Minter said Wiggins was still being evaluated.
"Not a whole lot," Minter responded. "I think there's optimism, but again, we'll look at it, we'll see where it's at. It's one of those plays, really not much between the two guys in the play. So whether it was hitting the ground or whatever it was, we'll see what it looks like."
Wiggins' injury comes two practices after two-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Zay Flowers left Friday's session with a thigh bruise. Flowers returned to limited action Tuesday after missing Sunday's practice.

The singing dog had been famous in their family long before her 'tail' made it onto the page, and the mother-daughter duo hopes that her stories—both real and fictional—inspire readers to celebrate their talents and strengths, whatever they may be.
Let's rewind: In the 1950s, when Julie was busy rehearsing for her starring role as Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady, a small Poodle puppy joined the family. Originally, the pup's registered name was "Whisper of Whey," but Andrews' aunt suggested the name 'Shy' to pay homage to both her sweet temperament and her original moniker.
When it came to musical rehearsals, though, the dog wasn't shy at all. Julie revealed, "Each time I sat down at the piano and began to do my scales, Shy would lift her little nose to the air and start to howl, as if she were singing along. I wondered at first if it was a comment on the quality of my singing!"
As days went by, however, Andrews learned she could guide her dog's howling up and down the scale. It wasn't long until the Miniature Poodle became desperate to sing along, which, as endearing as it was, made rehearsing for performances much more complicated than it needed to be.

Josh Allen believes the Buffalo Bills have built something different heading into the 2026 NFL season. After another playoff disappointment, Buffalo changed its coaching structure and reshaped its roster around Allen.
Speaking on The Pat McAfee Show, Allen highlighted the chemistry developing throughout training camp. A.J. Hawk asked what made this Bills team feel different from previous seasons.
Allen pointed to the way players from different position groups now interact away from the field.

The Michigan Wolverines have entered their second week of fall camp, with the season approaching faster and faster with every passing moment. There are numerous things to keep an eye on until the season kicks off on Sept. 5 against Western Michigan, with the health status of two of the Wolverines' top defenders near — or at — the top of the list.
Sixth-year safety Rod Moore and senior edge rusher John Henry Daley will be paramount to Michigan's defense in 2026. Moore elected to return for one final season of eligibility following back-to-back unhealthy seasons and earning a sixth year of eligibility. Daley, meanwhile, transfers over from Utah after putting up an All-American season in 2025 where he compiled 48 tackles, 17.5 tackles for loss, 11.5 sacks and two forced fumbles.
Both players are fully cleared for football activities, but they are still on "pitch counts," as head coach Kyle Whittingham put it on Monday during his press conference. The reason for that — years of experience being a coach and seeing players rush through a recovery to get back on the football field.
"(Rod) and John are completely healthy," Whittingham told the media. "Now, that being said, we as coaches are trying to bring them along slowly. They're cleared. They're cleared to do whatever the doctors say — 'they're yours.' But too many times in my career, I've seen guys come back and overdo it early on and get chronic soreness and swelling, and we don't want that to happen. And so they are on pitch counts, but it's self-inflicted by the coaches, not because they can't function. We just want to continue to ramp them up. Hopefully in a couple weeks, they'll be able to practice everything.

NEW DELHI: Former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif has welcomed Sarfaraz Khan's return to India's Test squad and backed him to make the playing XI against Sri Lanka, arguing that his ability against spin could make him a better option than Dhruv Jurel in the conditions expected in Galle.

Sarfaraz was added to India's squad as a replacement for injured Sai Sudharsan and joined the team in Sri Lanka on Monday. His return has also reignited the debate over his prolonged absence from the Test setup, having last played for India against New Zealand in November 2024.

Kaif, while discussing Sarfaraz's comeback on his YouTube channel, questioned why the batter was left out after his initial run in the side. He stressed that poor performance was not the reason for Sarfaraz's exclusion.

"There was a reason he was not allowed to play. Performance was not the reason. There was no reason. That his runs were not getting made, that the bat was not working. He made runs against New Zealand. He came across the field. He was playing well. He was in form. When he scored against England, he had a good start," Kaif said.

Kaif also praised the decision-makers for bringing Sarfaraz back, believing his skill against spin could prove valuable in Sri Lanka.

"Whatever happened in between, he was removed. But now, whoever said that he should come back, I feel that he is thinking for India. India is thinking for cricket. We have to win. We will need good players. We will need good players. We will need good players who play well," Kaif further said.

He added: "So, first of all, whoever has named him on the table, I congratulate him a lot. And I hope that Sarfaraz Khan will go there and play well."
The bigger question now is whether Sarfaraz can go straight into India's XI. Kaif believes he should, although he acknowledged that the team management could favour Jurel because of his existing involvement with the squad.

"If they follow the trend of backing the players who have already been playing for the team, then they might say, 'Jurel has been with us already. He hasn't scored consistently, but we will back him because he has already been part of the team.' If that is the approach, then Sarfaraz will have to wait," Kaif said.

"But if you ask me what the best XI is, Sarfaraz's name comes into my best XI because of his ability to play spin at No. 5 or No. 6. His record against spin is excellent," he added.

Sarfaraz's range of strokes is another reason Kaif sees him as a strong option, particularly if the pitch becomes increasingly difficult to bat on as the Test progresses.

"He also has a wide range of shots. When you get to the fourth or fifth day, batting becomes more difficult, and that is where a player like Sarfaraz Khan can be very useful," he said. "He knows how to use sweeps and reverse sweeps effectively. He can hit over extra cover, he is good off the back foot and he attacks spin."
