Ahead of the release of Zach Cregger's reboot today, there were already seven Resident Evil movies — six of them in a more action-oriented series starring Milla Jovovich, four of which were directed by her husband, Paul W.S. Anderson, plus an unrelated "reboot" in 2021 called Welcome to Raccoon City that went for more of a John Carpenter vibe and was an attempt to truly "adapt" the games. There's also a Netflix TV show version that ran for a single season in 2022. Countless other works in the horror genre have unofficially cribbed from the Resident Evil games over the years. It's an incredibly influential series.
And yet, Zach Cregger, hot off his Oscar-winning original horror film Weapons, is the first filmmaker to truly feel like he's adapting the experience of playing the games, arguably the scariest survival-horror ones ever made, rather than simply incorporating story and plot elements to explain the outbreak of infected people. In Cregger's hands, Resident Evil is pure crowd-pleasing popcorn cinema, best experienced in a packed movie theater with dozens of other people reacting loudly to the madness.
The premise couldn't be simpler — and the runtime a brisk 90ish minutes — as we follow a medical courier named Bryan (Austin Abrams, proving himself to be the Bruce Campbell for a new generation) who unwittingly finds himself fighting for survival as one fateful, horrifying night collapses around him in a swirl of chaos. Fans of the video games will recognize various easter eggs and nods to game mechanics, including the importance of conserving ammo and checking every last drawer for more of it.
But you don't need to be familiar with the games at all to enjoy the movie, which is an efficient horror set-piece machine that just keeps putting Abrams in increasingly concerning situations. I can't stress enough how much this is a one-man show anchored by Abrams, and he crushes it. He's in every scene, earning tons of laughs simply by reacting as a normal person would in this situation; he's a true audience-surrogate character, ushering us through the chaos. His comedic timing, paired with Cregger's ****** ured camerawork and editing, is a match made in genre-movie heaven.
I didn't expect it to be so heavily inspired by genre classics like The Thing and Evil Dead. In fact, it's a better Evil Dead movie than the last several movies with "Evil Dead" in the ****** le, nailing the horror-comedy tone that only Sam Raimi and a few others can pull off with aplomb. Cregger has a ton of fun with the various monstrous forms that the infected take here, from fusing multiple humans together to crafting his own horror take on a big, scary guy like Dune's Baron Harkonnen. Resident Evil movies have thus far treated the zombies as pretty traditional movie zombies; Cregger's version gets at the attempt to create the next stage of human evolution.

The Federal Communications Commission on Thursday granted Paramount Skydance's request to allow Middle Eastern royal families to hold a substantial stake in a merged Paramount-Warner Bros. Discovery.
Foreign investors, including the sovereign wealth funds of Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Abu Dhabi, are slated to indirectly own nearly 50% of the equity in David Ellison's proposed mega-studio. That will give them a hefty stake in CBS, CNN, Comedy Central, HBO and two historic Hollywood film studios.
Paramount also asked the commission, led by President Trump's appointee Brendan Carr, to allow the foreign investors to eventually take on an even bigger stake because the company expects that it will need more capital to run the merged entity after closing the highly leveraged deal.
The FCC's Media Bureau granted Paramount's petition. Ellison needed FCC approval because the deal will change the ownership structure of CBS.
As part of the Communications Act of 1934, Congress placed restrictions on foreign ownership of broadcast outlets because of concerns about national security. Renowned fashion and costume designer Bob Mackie has died at the age of 87.
The designer, who was best known for dressing the likes of Cher and Elton John in show-stopping ensembles, died on Monday.
"It is with a heavy heart that we share the news that Mr. Bob Mackie passed away today," reads a statement on his social media pages. "He lived his 87 years to the fullest, fulfilling his dream of being a Fashion and Costume Designer, which is all he ever wanted to do. His genius and extraordinary designs will live on forever, continuing to bring beauty into this world."
His cause of death has not been disclosed.
Known for his flamboyant, over-the-top and extravagant designs, Mackie created all the costumes for The Carol Burnett Show variety series in the '60s and '70s, and Cher's looks for her TV programmes, including The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour and The Sonny and Cher Show.

He spent part of the early 1960s working at the studio as an ****** istant designer under Ray Aghayan. He scored his first big break when Mitzi Gaynor hired him to create the costumes for her Las Vegas Revue. He continued to be a go-to collaborator for Gaynor over the years and raked in Emmys for his contributions to her 1976 and 1978 TV specials.
He became even more well-known in the Hollywood scene in the late 1960s and through the late 1970s for his work as the costume designer for "The Carol Burnett Show," which asked him to design upwards of 50 costumes a week. Pete Davidson has spoken about losing his father on September 11 for much of his adult life, sometimes seriously and sometimes through comedy. Becoming a father himself has changed the way he understands what happened.
Davidson was seven when his father, New York City firefighter Scott Matthew Davidson, died while responding to the World Trade Center attacks. "I thought, 'Oh, he was an old guy. He's 33,'" Davidson told the New York Post. "But now I'm there, and I have a kid, and that would be like my kid not having her dad."
Davidson is 32 and turns 33 in November, putting him close to the age his father was when he died. His daughter, Scottie Rose Hewitt Davidson, was born in December 2025 and was named after the grandfather she will never meet.
That combination made the 25th anniversary especially difficult. Davidson said this year felt "way harder" than it had in a long time, but also "extra beautiful" because he would spend September 11 with Scottie. "It'll be very healing and special," he said.
Scott Davidson was 33 when he died and had been an FDNY firefighter since 1994. He worked with Ladder Company 118 in Brooklyn Heights and responded after the second hijacked plane struck the World Trade Center. The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation remembers him as a father who coached Pete in football and baseball, watched daughter Casey's dance recitals and frequently called firefighting "the greatest job in America."

It's been a busy year for the Kevin Langue Show star – this is his second stand-up tour supported by two self-produced comedy specials just in 2026 – but artists with big ambitions don't slow down when their followings are growing even larger than their foreheads.
Most comedy fans who know Branch have seen him on the Rob Lowe comedy series Unstable or dead-center in the eye of the storm on The Kevin Langue Show, a massively popular and mostly improvised YouTube series that combines game show elements with unbridled comedy chaos. Langue just inked a deal to bring his gonzo social experiments to Netflix late last month, and the Kevin Langue Show's massive 5.5-million subscriber count forms a huge part of Branch's own fandom.
But in his solo career, Aaron has branched out into music, long-form sketch comedy and some deeply personal stand-up performances, such as his latest comedy special, The Birth of a Forehead. A fifteen-year comedy veteran, Branch now finds his career expanding in all directions, but, much like his forehead, his body of work can always get bigger.

In a new Instagram carousel posted by Dylan Efron, the handsome reality star poses shirtless next to his older brother as they take in the views on the water. Although Zac Efron might not be wearing his signature Baywatch Speedo while on the family vacay, the duo looks like they're having the time of their lives as summer comes to a close.
Throughout the post, fans can also see Dylan Efron golfing, spending time with his dog, and even ordering food in a drive-through at In-N-Out. The brothers definitely deserve some relaxation time as Dylan Efron had his breakout year in 2025 after winning season 3 of The Traitors and making it all the way to the finals on season 34 of Dancing with the Stars.

He's going to star in and executive produce a highly anticipated Angel Heart series, which is slated to drop next year or in 2028. Henry Winkler is opening up about his decades-long feud with Tom Hanks, admitting he is still processing what went wrong while leaving the door open for a potential reconciliation.
Speaking on "In Depth With Graham Bensinger," the Emmy-winning actor revisited the turning point in their relationship: his high-profile firing as director of the 1989 comedy "Turner & Hooch," which starred Hanks, now 70.
Winkler recalled that he felt unsuited to direct the movie from the start but accepted the job after a Paramount executive handpicked him. His overzealousness and early insecurity quickly backfired once he got on set.
"I went completely against my tummy, and it hit me in the face with a 2-by-4," Winkler said. "I now meet the puppies, and I meet with Tom [Hanks] ... and I, at that time being insecure, I talked too much and I gave them direction. I [did] what I thought was my job, and I wanted to do it over again and apparently that p**ed them off."
The job lasted less than two weeks. Studio executive Jeffrey Katzenberg called Winkler into his office to tell him his work was not showing up in the daily footage.

It's always fun to joke about air yards.
I do it all the time with my Rotoworld Football Show cohosts in desperately trying to make a case that a player is due for (positive or negative) regression based on his air yards accumulation from the prior week or the past few outings. And it always sounds like one long comedy bit: This player saw so many air yards that could have been converted into actual, real-life receiving yards bro, I swear bro, trust me on this.
Air yards, whether we like it or not — and most fantasy folks definitely do not like it — are a good measure of a pass catcher's opportunity and the type of passing volume in a given offense. That air yards don't always translate into real, edible receiving yards is just part of our frustrating little game. We make small bets here and there and hope things break right from week to week and prove our process correct more often than not. It's not any more complicated than that, even if we desperately want it to be.
Over the past few seasons I have used this ****** e to talk mostly about guys with exceptionally high or low touchdown rates. Air yards has mostly been a side issue in the Regression Files. A comedy festival in Portugal is currently giving people little reason to laugh. The 1st edition of the Lisbon International Humour Festival, Commedia a La Carte Fest, is being overshadowed by controversy, with several Portuguese artists cancelling their shows.
The most recent case is that of actress Inês Aires Pereira, who announced on Saturday that her show "Namastê" was being removed from the comedy festival's line-up.
The performer wrote on social media that "one of the names persistently defends ideas and acts that I consider indefensible." She added: "We cannot relativise or normalise a genocide."
Her criticism did not explicitly mention anyone, but the apparent target seems to be Jerry Seinfeld, the American comedian headlining the event, who has publicly expressed his support for Israel.
The Portuguese actress was not the first to announce she was pulling out. Also on Saturday, the comedy duo Cebola Mol, made up of Eduardo Madeira and Filipe Homem Fonseca, said they would not be taking part in the festival.

Kenan Thompson may be a Hollywood pro, but in the early days, he had anything but beginner's luck.
During a recent appearance on the "Good Hang with Amy Poehler" podcast, the "Saturday Night Live" star, who made his film debut in the sports comedy "D2: The Mighty Ducks," said the role made him want to quit acting.
The 1994 Disney flick, starring Emilio Estevez, follows the coming-of-age journey of an underdog teen hockey team. Thompson, who was 15 during the movie's production, played street hockey player Russ Tyler, who helps the Mighty Ducks up their game for an international tournament.
"I put it on my résumé under special skills that I could roller skate, but you know, I never in a million years considered hockey," Thompson told host and fellow "SNL" alum Amy Poehler on the Sept. 1 episode. "I wanted to learn, but after that first day of hockey camp, which was on my 15th birthday, I wanted to quit it all."
Thompson said the role's demanding physicality made him seriously reconsider his career path at the time.

The pair famously won the bid and purchased the decommissioned John F. Kennedy Staten Island Ferry at auction for $280,000 in 2022. Davidson and Jost have held several events on the ship, such as Tommy Hilfiger's 2025 New York Fashion Week show. The ferry is getting ready for one of its biggest nights ever; this fall it will host a one-night-only comedy event.
The former Saturday Night Live co-stars are working with Snapple to put on the Snapple Island Ferry. It will be hosted by Davidson and Jost, and produced by The Stand Group, which is a part owner of the ferry. The Sept. 17 event will be "a one-day-only, free comedy club built to give New Yorkers an unexpectedly refreshing break from the daily grind," according to Snapple.
