On September 14, NextEra Energy, Inc. (NYSE:NEE) and Dominion Energy, Inc. (NYSE:D) announced a "transformational" Virginia benefits package to address concerns regarding their proposed $66.8 billion merger. The Virginia supplier program, worth up to $1 billion annually for five years, will direct spending toward contractors, suppliers, and service providers in the state.
Additionally, the companies also proposed doubling residential bill credits to four years, protecting retail customers from grid costs tied to Northern Virginia's rapidly expanding AI data centers, and committing $100 million toward directly supporting workforce development in the Commonwealth. NextEra also stated that it plans to add 600 new energy jobs in Virginia, while expecting suppliers to create another 400 positions.
The updated package comes after the proposed merger attracted a great deal of political scrutiny due to the impact it can have on everyday consumers. Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger also stated last month that she would formally intervene in the regulatory review to press for commitments on electric bill affordability, job protections, and clean-energy investments.
John Ketchum, Chairman, President, and CEO of NextEra Energy, commented:
"This is a Virginia-first package, and it starts with customers. We are proposing to double residential bill relief from two years to four years, along with expanded low-income financial ******* istance and long-term affordability benefits. We are also reaffirming our support for the State Corporation Commission, Governor and General ******* embly's efforts to protect residential and small business customers from costs ******* ociated with serving data centers. Just as important, this package would help Virginia build more of the clean energy and infrastructure it needs faster, so the Commonwealth can reduce its reliance on expensive imported power. And it would do that while positioning Virginia as a major energy leader, bringing NextEra Energy jobs, good-paying supplier jobs, workforce investment, economic development and national-scale energy technology and innovation to Virginia. This is the kind of customer-focused, job-creating package this combination makes possible."

SGOV, JPST, and VTIP create a layered cash reserve covering one to five years, shielding equities from forced sales in a bear market.
Drawdowns from 2000 to 2007 and 2008 to 2013 both lasted multiple years, proving one year of T-bills forces equity sales at the worst possible time.
VTIP adjusts principal with CPI and delivers a 2.42% real yield, protecting purchasing power when inflation surprises retirees in years four and five.

You retired into a market that rewards patience and punishes forced sellers. The bucket strategy answers a single question: how much of your spending can you cover without touching stocks when the S&P falls 30%? Guess one year, and a prolonged drawdown forces you to sell equities at the bottom. Guess five, and you drag on returns. The middle path is a laddered cash reserve, and three ETFs do the heavy lifting: iShares 0-3 Month Treasury Bond ETF (NYSEARCA:SGOV), JPMorgan Ultra-Short Income ETF (NYSEARCA:JPST), and Vanguard Short-Term Inflation-Protected Securities ETF (NASDAQ:VTIP).

The Kroger Co. (NYSE:KR) cut its full-year 2026 identical-sales forecast excluding fuel to 0.2%–0.8% from 1%–2%, reflecting a sharper-than-expected slowdown in consumer demand. Second-quarter identical sales rose just 0.2%, down from 3.4% a year earlier and below the 0.9% ****** yst estimate.
The weakness reflects pressure on middle- and lower-income consumers, while a Cyclospora outbreak reduced quarterly identical sales by roughly 35 basis points and Medicare prescription-drug pricing changes created an approximately 140-basis-point headwind for pharmacy revenue. Importantly, Kroger maintained its full-year adjusted FIFO operating-profit forecast of $5.0 billion–$5.2 billion and delivered adjusted EPS of $1.09, ahead of the $1.06 consensus.
The strongest bullish argument is that The Kroger Co. (NYSE:KR) is currently protecting earnings despite the deterioration in sales momentum. Second-quarter adjusted EPS increased 5% year over year to $1.09, while adjusted FIFO operating profit was $1.076 billion. Kroger's gross margin rate actually increased by 13 basis points, although the overall gross-margin percentage was 22.4% versus 22.5% a year earlier, suggesting that pricing, sourcing, and cost-management initiatives are helping offset weaker volumes. The company's higher-margin businesses are also becoming increasingly important: adjusted e-commerce sales grew 20% in the quarter, and Kroger Precision Marketing profit increased 24%. That mix shift gives Kroger an earnings lever even when supermarket traffic and comparable sales are weak.
There is also evidence that management is actively responding to the competitive pressure rather than simply accepting slower growth. CEO Greg Foran has been pursuing tighter sourcing, simpler operations and lower prices, with Reuters reporting plans to cut prices across thousands of products to regain shoppers from Walmart, Costco and Aldi. The Kroger Co. (NYSE:KR)'s balance sheet provides room to fund that strategy: its net debt-to-adjusted-EBITDA ratio was 1.91x, below its stated target range of 2.30x–2.50x, while the company repurchased $1.0 billion of shares in the second quarter and $1.2 billion year to date. It also raised its dividend 11%, marking the 20th consecutive year of increases. If sales stabilize while e-commerce, retail media and cost efficiencies continue expanding, the unchanged $5.0 billion–$5.2 billion operating-profit forecast could prove more important to valuation than the reduced top-line outlook.

When the country star died at 80 on August 25, her representatives confirmed to People that she died after a "brief battle with cancer," but did not clarify which kind.
"That was her business," Stella Parton told Gayle King during a CBS Mornings interview released on Thursday, September 10. "But she didn't tell us that we could say it."
"So, out of respect for her, I can talk about my love for her and describe who she is to me," the 77-year-old continued, "but it's not my business to tell her business."

The San Francisco 49ers opened their 2026 regular season with an emphatic win over the NFC West-rival Los Angeles Rams by a 27-7 final score.
The Niners effectively silenced doubters through Week 1, with a dominant performance that will undoubtedly reposition some stances taken with San Francisco and just how good it can be.
The defense allowed just one score and the offense scored 24 unanswered points after going down 7-3 early in the second quarter. Quarterback Brock Purdy completed 25 of 34 passes for 205 yards and three touchdowns.
"I mean, at the end of the day, it comes down to playing our style of ball, doing what coaches coach us up to do, and running our plays," Purdy said in a postgame interview with Netflix. "Obviously, you got to respect the other guys on the other side, and we know what they can do. But at the end of the day, man, it comes down to executing, protecting the ball, moving the ball, getting points on (the) board, keeping it simple."
It was an overall team effort that forces others to look closer at what's going on with San Francisco. Here's what we learned from the 49ers' Week 1 victory against the Rams:

The NBA brought the hammer down on the LA Clippers and owner Steve Ballmer for circumventing the salary cap to funnel more money to Kawhi Leonard — and now federal prosecutors are looking into the matter.
The Justice Department has opened a criminal investigation into the Clippers' efforts to secure "no-show" endorsement deals for Kawhi Leonard, the New York Times reports. This investigation is being run out of the U.S. Attorney's Office in Brooklyn, the office that has traditionally looked into issues with professional sports leagues.
The investigation is in its earliest stages, and it's unclear what, if any, federal charges could come out of it, according to the report.
The Justice Department investigation comes in addition to the Securities and Exchange Commission looking into Daktronics' role in the scandal, as it had an endorsement deal with Leonard despite never having had a celebrity endorser before and there being no evidence Leonard did anything for the company. Daktronics is publicly traded, and the SEC is tasked with protecting shareholders.
The NBA oversaw a year-long investigation of its own into the Clippers working to circumvent the salary cap with Leonard and last month came down with the harshest penalties ever imposed on a team:

For most 9-year olds, the sight of a parent picking them up a little more than an hour into the school day might be a welcome one. But 25 years ago, Dean Marlowe realized quickly that something was very wrong.
"I was in the middle of class, and my stepdad came and picked me up from class," Marlowe told Yahoo Sports by phone recently. "I was kind of confused because I was like, 'Hey, what's going on?' I had just gotten to school. And all I remember him saying is that something bad happened in New York City where me and your mom are working, and we have to go there immediately."
That was the morning of 9/11, and Marlowe was just starting to realize how life-changing that day would be.
Mike Neil, Marlowe's stepfather and a police sergeant with the 75th precinct, had worked a late shift the night before as a favor to a friend. Neil had been asleep only a few hours when another officer from the precinct called to summon him back to work. It wasn't until Neil turned on his TV, seeing the second plane hit the World Trade Center, before he understood why.
Neil called his wife, Lisa, a police officer in Harlem's 32nd precinct, who told him to pick up Dean and his older sister, who worked at a bank close to Marlowe's school. Neither parent was sure when they'd see their kids again, knowing that people were dying and the city they were tasked with protecting was being cloaked in fire, smoke and debris.

Sandra Bullock is opening up about one of her biggest roles yet: parenting teenagers. As she promotes Practical Magic 2, the actress has offered a refreshingly honest look at protecting family time, ignoring one-size-fits-all parenting advice and even finding a way to include her children in her latest movie.
Bullock, 62, is mom to teenagers Louis, 16, and Laila, 13, and says their schedules now play a major role in the projects she accepts. Rather than expecting her children to fit around Hollywood, she chooses work that allows her to be available when they need her.
The actress has previously been clear about where her priorities lie. "I'm not going to sacrifice my time with my kids," Bullock said while discussing why Practical Magic 2 was able to happen. That approach can become increasingly important as children get older. Teenagers may want more independence, but they still need parents who are present and available when life gets complicated.
Bullock also isn't pretending she has all the answers when it comes to raising teenagers. In a recent appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, she joked about how difficult it is to offer universal parenting advice when every child is different.
When asked what advice she would give other parents, Bullock's response was simply, "I'm sorry," before explaining that her children are both completely unique.

Biopharmaceutical leader Kiniksa Pharmaceuticals (KNSA) is approaching a new buy point in the wake of a strong quarterly sales report. That makes Kiniksa stock Thursday's pick for IBD 50 Growth Stocks To Watch from Investor's Business Daily.
Kiniksa develops and commercializes medicines for cardiovascular, autoimmune and autoinflammatory diseases. Its only drug, Arcalyst, treats recurrent pericarditis, a condition in which the sac protecting the heart, the pericardium, becomes inflamed. The risk of recurrence increases with each subsequent flare-up of pericarditis, according to the Arcalyst website.
The company expects to replace Arcalyst with a next-generation version, now called KPL-387, in 2028 or 2029.
While Arcalyst requires a weekly under-the-skin shot, KPL-387 is a monthly injection. KPL-387 sales are expected to start slow at $21.7 million in 2028, growing to $173.7 million, $486.3 million and $1.03 billion over the next three years.
During the second quarter, Arcalyst generated $243.6 million in sales, growing 55% year over year. That crushed estimates from FactSet that called for $227.7 million.

Ever wondered what it would be like to have seven-figures in your 401(k) plan? Well, for at least 769,000 Americans, that's a reality. That's the number of people with at least $1 million in their 401(k) at the end of June 2026, according to Fidelity data cited by Yahoo Finance (1).
That's a tiny fraction of adults with retirement accounts. If you're in this club, you're extremely lucky. You're also sitting on a relatively large IOU to the tax authorities. At age 73, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) (2) imposes required minimum distributions (RMDs), which are generally taxed as ordinary income.

"People that are against Tariffs are FOOLS!" President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social in November 2025, according to CNN (1). "A dividend of at least $2,000 a person (not including high income people!) will be paid to everyone."
However, the administration hasn't issued an update on this idea since then.

Genius, madman, salesman: Elon Musk is the subject of a nearly four-hour documentary at Venice that seeks to unmask the billionaire provocateur with outsized global influence in business, politics and even outer ****** e.
"Musk," premiering Tuesday at the Venice Film Festival, seeks to reframe the story of the world's richest man whose stated ambitions include colonising Mars, transitioning the planet to sustainable energy and protecting free speech, laying bare the "unreality of his narrative," Oscar-winning documentarian Alex Gibney said.
"I wanted to understand what game he is playing," says director Gibney at the start of the film about the man long considered a rule-breaking genius whose erratic behaviour and shift to right-wing politics has alienated -- and confused -- many.
Gibney said Musk's story was "oddly familiar" to him, having treated other larger-than-life characters in past films, from the executives behind the Enron scandal to former Theranos boss Elizabeth Holmes.
"His story is the story of an old wine and a new bottle. His story turns out to be the story of the confidence man, the stock pumper," said Gibney, adding that much of what Musk says "has an air of unreality around it".

Prince William and Meghan Markle may face an uphill battle to repair their fractured relationship, with an astrologer claiming that a lack of trust could be one of the biggest obstacles. According to TJ Higgs, their zodiac signs reveal contrasting approaches to protecting family and expressing themselves.
Her reading comes as the Sussexes' return to the UK brings fresh attention to the family's complicated dynamics. While a close relationship may be unlikely, Higgs believes mutual respect could eventually create an opening.
Astrologer TJ Higgs claims Prince William and Meghan Markle may have very different ways of approaching family, privacy, and personal expression. Speaking to the Daily Express U.S., Higgs looked at their zodiac signs and used a tarot card to offer her view on whether their relationship could eventually improve.
Higgs pointed to William being a Cancer and Markle being a Leo. In her interpretation, those signs can have very different priorities. "Cancer protects. Leo expresses," she said. The astrologer further suggested that William may place particular importance on family, privacy, and the institution he is expected to inherit. Markle, meanwhile, may want greater freedom to speak openly and make her own choices.
That difference, Higgs believes, could help explain the tension between them. However, she also sees some common ground. Both signs can be "incredibly loyal," according to her reading. "When they love someone, they will fight for them," she added.

Perceptions of the 2026 Washington Commanders have changed a lot over the last month. Heading into training camp, the Commanders were a team of mystery, but many believed they could still compete for a playoff spot in 2026 if they could keep quarterback Jayden Daniels healthy.
Optimism grew when Washington signed four-time Pro Bowl wideout Stefon Diggs, giving Daniels another top-tier weapon, while also making life a bit easier for star receiver Terry McLaurin. But the day after Diggs competed in his first Commanders' practice, left tackle Laremy Tunsil tore his triceps. It was a devastating injury for many reasons. Tunsil is one of the NFL's best players, and he was critical in protecting Daniels.
Washington's solution was to move Brandon Coleman back to left tackle to replace Tunsil. It's a good plan, considering Coleman played left tackle in 2024. While he's no Tunsil, Coleman is better than multiple left tackles in the NFL. The only problem is that it took Coleman away from the left guard competition, which he was expected to win.
Making matters worse, new center Nick Allegretti missed almost all of training camp. The veteran offensive lineman moved to center this offseason to replace Tyler Biadasz. While the Commanders are confident in Allegretti, those on the outside don't believe Washington did enough at center. All summer long, journeyman Julian Good-Jones and rookie sixth-round pick Matt Gulbin — who have a combined two career NFL snaps — took turns at center. They struggled; Good-Jones was cut and is now on the practice squad, while Gulbin is one snap away from replacing Allegretti.
As a result, several **** ysts have predicted that Washington will finish last in the NFC East.

General Motors Company (NYSE:GM) reached a tentative three-year labor deal with Unifor that Canadian workers ratified on August 29 and 30, securing more than C$1 billion ($791 million) in new and previously announced investment across Ontario, covering over 4,600 workers.
GM will spend C$144 million to bring next-generation Heavy-Duty GMC Sierra production to Oshawa, adding to a previously committed C$343 million there. At St. Catharines, GM will invest C$215 million in a new transmission program starting late 2029, on top of a previously announced C$691 million for V8 engine production. GM also pledged not to immediately sell or close its CAMI plant in Ingersoll while it studies alternatives, including possible defense work if it lands a Canadian Armed Forces contract. The deal lands as Canada's auto sector faces 25% U.S. tariffs, with Trump threatening to double that to 50% on January 1, 2027, and U.S. and Canada trade talks still stalled.
General Motors Company (NYSE:GM) enters this deal from a position of financial strength. GM beat second-quarter expectations with adjusted earnings per share of $3.57 versus the $3.18 estimate and revenue of $48 billion versus the $46.99 billion forecast. The company also raised its full-year guidance for the second time this year, while adjusted automotive free cash flow reached $5 billion, up $2.2 billion year over year. That cash generation gives GM room to fund its Canadian commitments without putting significant pressure on its balance sheet.
The tariff environment has also become more favorable for GM. After the Supreme Court invalidated tariffs imposed under emergency powers, GM lowered its full-year gross tariff-cost estimate to $2.5 billion-$3.5 billion from $3 billion-$4 billion. Protecting Canadian production now could reduce the risk of costly disruptions as GM adjusts its North American manufacturing footprint and responds to changing trade policies.
The agreement also protects GM's pickup and SUV business, which generates some of the company's highest margins. CEO Mary Barra said North American demand remains strong for these vehicles, while the return of Heavy-Duty Sierra production to Oshawa will give GM additional North American capacity for a key product line. Producing more trucks within the region could also help GM reduce its exposure to cross-border tariff costs.

Walmart Inc. (NASDAQ:WMT) and The Home Depot, Inc. (NYSE:HD) are both booking real tariff refund windfalls, but reporting and using the money in noticeably different ways, CNBC reported.
Walmart CFO John David Rainey said the company is eligible for roughly $2.9 billion in refunds, has yet to receive just under $100 million of that, and saw Walmart U.S. gross profit grow 1.6% from the boost; Rainey said Walmart plans to use the funds to lower prices for consumers, with the impact showing up in the current fiscal third quarter.
Home Depot said it received $730 million in tariff refunds during its fiscal second quarter, using about $685 million to reduce the cost of goods sold, lifting gross margin by 0.3 percentage points. CFO Richard McPhail called that "the vast majority" of what the company expected. Lowe's Companies, Inc. (NYSE:LOW), by contrast, said it would not use its refund to cut prices, with CEO Marvin Ellison saying the company wants to "deliver strong profitability for our shareholders" instead.
Walmart Inc. (NASDAQ:WMT) can turn its tariff refund into both lower prices and solid sales. The firm expects roughly $2.9 billion in tariff refunds and has already used part of the benefit to lower prices on about 11,000 products. Walmart can attract price-sensitive shoppers and increase traffic. It can also strengthen its market share if those lower prices generate more purchases.
The Home Depot, Inc. (NYSE:HD) has taken a consumer-focused approach to its tariff refund while still protecting its margins. The company expects to receive roughly $730 million in tariff refunds and plans to apply about $685 million toward its cost of goods. That approach gives Home Depot room to pass savings to customers while retaining a financial benefit, potentially helping it compete more aggressively for home-improvement spending.

Florida State head coach Mike Norvell and quarterback Ashton Daniels met with local media after Monday night's 27-24 loss to No. 19 SMU at Doak Campbell Stadium.
"Tonight, coming off of it, just another close game, a lot of one plays," Norvell said. "You think back through it, some of the explosive plays that we gave up defensively, some of missed opportunities there offensively. Never really got in rhythm throwing the ball, but had some good runs."
"Ashton as a runner did some good things," Norvell said. "We also got to go and be able to make plays in the passing game when opportunities present themselves. Didn't do a great job in protecting with that. There's some inconsistencies there that we got to clean up. It didn't all come together in the passing game and ultimately that's on us. We've got to get that corrected….It's a shame to come up a field goal short."
Florida State finished 2-of-15 on third down. SMU had four turnovers. The Seminoles were outgained 585-324.
"We were able to create takeaways. It's something that we knew going into the game was going to be a big factor," Norvell said. "Unfortunately, we only had seven points off takeaways, which when you get four turnovers, you need to be able to put points on the board in those situations. We did not do a good enough job of putting points on the board after turnovers."

The chief executive of Robinhood (HOOD) said on Bloomberg Television late last month that states suing to shut down prediction markets are protecting their own money. "States disagree for various reasons," Vlad Tenev said. "I mean, number one is there's a huge financial incentive from collecting taxes on these state-owned operators for that to be protected."

Taylor Swift was reportedly keeping her distance from Ed Sheeran after a political controversy followed his MetLife Stadium shows. The longtime friends remained close, but an insider claimed Swift wanted to avoid being pulled into Macklemore's Palestine message.
Macklemore, who joined Sheeran's tour as a special guest, called for "Free Palestine" during his set. He also performed "Hind's Hall" while images from Gaza appeared behind him, turning the concert into a political flashpoint.
Rob Shuter revealed on his Substack that Swift was deliberately creating some distance from Sheeran after the performance. A source told his Naughty But Nice column, "Taylor wants no part of this."
"She loves Ed, but she is incredibly careful about what becomes attached to her name," the source continued. "She isn't inheriting somebody else's political controversy because they're friends." The report did not suggest Swift had ended her friendship with Sheeran. Instead, the insider described the move as a matter of protecting her public image.
"This isn't Taylor turning against Ed," the source said. "It's Taylor protecting Taylor. She knows one text, one photograph, one comment can become an international headline."

One surprise that often hits retirees in their first few years is that even without the costs of working and contributing to retirement accounts, they end up spending more than when they held down a job.
Some financial planners cite three retirement phases: Go-Go, Slow-Go and No-Go. In the Go-Go years, typically 65 to 75, many healthy, young retirees spend big to check lifelong dreams off their bucket list — and make big purchases they may end up later regretting.
