Quenton Nelson knows how hard it is to block Jeffery Simmons. When Nelson was a guard for the Colts and Simmons was a defensive tackle for the **** ans, the two played against each other 13 times. And when Nelson got traded to the Seahawks on Tuesday, he thought he was going to get a break from facing Simmons.
That didn't happen. Shortly after Nelson got traded to the Seahawks, Simmons got traded to the Bears. Who play the Seahawks on Monday night, in the first game for both players on their new teams.
Nelson said he considers Simmons one of the best opponents he's faced, and he's ready for a big challenge when the Bears visit Seattle on Monday night.
"He's an amazing football player and competitor. I was like, Man, can't get away from this guy. It'll be another battle against him this week," Nelson said.
Nelson vs. Simmons will be the most-watched offensive lineman vs. defensive lineman battle of this NFL season, as two All-Pros go at it again, now on new teams with Super Bowl aspirations.

Son Heung-min will make his MLS postseason debut after helping the Los Angeles Football Club clinch a playoff bid.
Los Angeles FC clinched a spot in the MLS playoffs after a 2-2 draw with the LA Galaxy on Sunday, Oct. 25, reaching the postseason for the eighth time in the franchise's nine-year history.
"We still got two more games to play in the regular season," Heung-min said of LAFC's fight for playoff positioning. "We want to finish as high as possible so we can have a home game as many times as possible."
LAFC have 47 points and trail the San Jose Earthquakes and the Houston Dynamo by one point in the standings, and will face Minnesota United on Nov. 1 and the Seattle Sounders on Nov. 7.
Heung-min believes the black and gold missed an opportunity to tie San Jose in the standings after an offside call against teammate Denis Bouanga in the 29th minute of the first half resulted in his apparent goal being called back.

Bryce Young and the Carolina Panthers had a rough night in ****** letown.
They have now lost two games in a row, as they followed up their Week 7 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at home with a 27-19 defeat at the hands of Jordan Love and the Green Bay Packers in Week 8's edition of Thursday Night Football at Lambeau Field in Green Bay.
Young struggled in the pocket, largely because of the relentless pressure from the home team's pass rush unit. The former Alabama Crimson Tide star signal-caller was sacked for a total of six times for a loss of 33 yards. Young finished with just 209 passing yards and a touchdown against an interception on 23/41 pass completions.
The ugly loss to Green Bay left Young with a clear message about how Green Bay dominated his team.
"They executed better," Young said after the game, via Mike Kaye of ESPN. "A lot of stuff was on film, but they just do a really good job of disguising. They're a really good defense. So, we have a lot of respect for them. They were better than us today, for sure. They deserve that win. We should have been better. We've just got to execute better — that's all it is."

So far this season, Cheeks has tallied 26 total tackles, seven tackles for loss, five sacks, and two forced fumbles. In Wisconsin's upset 24-7 win over USC this past weekend, Cheeks pulled together five tackles and 2.5 sacks, earning him conference acclaim.

Cam Buffington has been the most consistent producer for Iowa's defense this season. He was rewarded for that consistency on Wednesday.
Buffington was named a semifinalist for the Butkus Award, which is given annually to the most impactful linebacker in college football. The third-year from Winfield, Iowa, joins 14 other players as semifinalists for the award named after Hall of Fame linebacker **** Butkus.
Buffington has 62 total tackles and two sacks for the Hawkeyes this season. The 6-foot-3, 238-pound linebacker is tied with Northwestern's Braydon Brus for the most total tackles in the Big Ten this season. He's come up huge numerous times for Phil Parker's defense, including a 15-tackle performance in a tight win over Iowa State.
Buffington is the leader of a defense that's given up the eighth-fewest points (14.3) and 14th-fewest yards (281.3) per game among all FBS teams this season. Iowa's defense has been elite, and Buffington is a massive part of it.
If he wins the Butkus Award, Buffington would join Jack Campbell as the only Hawkeyes to ever take home the hardware. Finalists for the Butkus Award will be announced on Nov. 20. The winner will be announced in early December.

The 2026 season might have been a struggle for the North Hunterdon High School football team, but last weekend's victory over neighborhood rival Voorhees in the 51st annual Milk Can Game is a good way to go into the offseason on a supremely positive note.
Senior Matt Esposito led the way in the 21-18 victory, which increased the Lions all-time lead in the series to 36-14-1 and gave them their first victory of the season. Esposito rushed 27 times for 193 yards and the three touchdowns, including two in the second half. He also pitched in five tackles on defense, plus an interception.
The senior finishes with 916 yards and nine scores for the season, plus a receiving touchdown, while recording 36 tackles, two interceptions and a forced fumble in the Lions' defensive secondary.
"Matt had a tremendous year and was an instrumental piece to the team," North Hunterdon coach CJ Robinson said. "He brings the effort, attitude, and toughness on Friday nights. His performance last week is a great reflection of the work and commitment he's put in this year. To see him play at that level and help lead our team to a win was special. We were fortunate to have had him as part of our program."

Average Women's Super League attendances surged by 192% in the season after the Lionesses' Euro 2022 triumph, but the speed of the boom has stalled.
Median crowds have risen by just 166 fans, from 3,070 in 2023-24 to 3,236 in 2025-2026, according to a 2026 report from YouGov and architecture firm Populous.
Some of the biggest fixtures are now attracting significantly smaller attendances.
Arsenal against Manchester United at Emirates Stadium fell from 46,603 in 2024-25 to 29,853 this season, while Chelsea v ******* nal dropped from 34,302 to 19,349 over the same period.

Baltimore Ravens safety Kyle Hamilton is receiving flak for his recent comments. During Thursday's press conference, he was asked to share his thoughts on the team's defensive struggles this season.
Hamilton said that he urges his defensive backs not to push themselves to their limit. He also highlighted the importance of having fun on the gridiron.
"I try to relay this message to the DBs, like, it's a game at the end of the day," Hamilton said. "I feel like sometimes we're thinking the whole world's going to end if something bad happens. That's not the approach that you need to have in the sport."
"None of our tombstones are going to say, 'Kyle Hamilton football player.' It's a game that we play. We need to have fun doing it. We need to be out there playing the game like we're playing a game."
Fans questioned Kyle Hamilton's discipline and dedication to the franchise and football after his comments. Some also compared his mentality to franchise legends Ray Lewis and Ed Reed, considered among the best defensive players of all time.

Halloween is tomorrow, and every year the Hoddle of Coffee likes to celebrate with a spooky TOTD. There are lots of obvious picks out there but each year I like to give you all a diferent flavour like Vanilla Fudge's Season of the Witch, Queen's Ogre Battle and Alice Cooper's Killer.
Today we're diving into a punk rock Halloween. There are great ones to choose from. Lots from The Misfits, including Halloween, but we've featured them a handful of times in non-Halloween hoddles because they're just a really cool band.
Here are some other cool ones to add to your playlist and get people saying "What the heck?" And then "Heck yeah!"

Panthers most to blame for Thursday Night Football loss to Packers appeared first on ClutchPoints. Add ClutchPoints as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Carolina Panthers had enough opportunities to make Thursday night interesting. Too bad they spent too much of the game making life difficult for themselves. Their defense generated some timely stops, and Chuba Hubbard delivered a productive performance. Bryce Young even produced a late touchdown to keep hope alive. None of it was enough, though. A six-sack nightmare, an inconsistent quarterback performance, and communication problems in the secondary combined to doom Carolina in a 27-19 loss to the Green Bay Packers.
Jeff Hanisch-Imagn Images
Carolina's offensive front deserves the biggest share of the blame for this loss. Green Bay brought consistent pressure and sacked Young six times. They repeatedly disrupted the timing of an offense that needed to establish some rhythm. The Panthers could not reliably protect the pocket. That turned too many passing situations into survival exercises.
The damage went beyond the sack total. Every time Young had to escape pressure, Carolina's receivers had less time to complete their routes and find open ****** e. The Packers could attack aggressively, knowing their rushers had a good chance of reaching the quarterback. That allowed Green Bay to dictate the terms of the matchup.

LSU's Lane Kiffin staunchly defends 24-team CFP while taking dig at other conferences appeared first on ClutchPoints. Add ClutchPoints as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Lane Kiffin can play coy sometimes, as many trolls choose to do, but the LSU head coach is making it perfectly clear where he stands on the proposed 24-team College Football Playoff.
Kiffin is not just in favor of this expected format change. He believes it is essential, particularly for an SEC that is brimming with parity and deeply passionate fan bases.
"I think it had to happen," Kiffin said, per On3's Jonathan Wagner. "You could say 12 is better, but not when you take into account the way college football is set up now. The conferences are so different, the four conferences. They are. They're different stadiums, they're different environments, they're different middle to bottom of them. So you're not playing equal schedules, they're not even close."

The Green Bay Packers took down the visiting Carolina Panthers on "Thursday Night Football" to open Week 8 in the NFL. The big stats to know: Jordan Love threw three touchdown passes and Josh Jacobs scored twice, while the Packers defense produced six sacks and held the Panthers to just 3.7 yards per play.
Five other stats to explain the Packers' 27-19 win over the Panthers:
The Packers pressured Bryce Young on 48.9 percent of his dropbacks on Thursday night, and he completed only seven passes for 41 yards and took six sacks while pressured, per Next Gen Stats. Brenton ******* Jr. (6), Dani Dennis-Sutton and Lukas Van Ness (5) led the way in the pressure department for the Packers, who consistently won at the line of scrimmage and forced Young into rushed decisions or improvised throws. Because of the pass protection issues, Young completed only two passes thrown more than 10 yards downfield and attempted only one pass more than 20 yards downfield.
While Bryce Young languished under pressure, Jordan Love consistently got the ball out of his hands quick and on time. Per Next Gen Stats, Love completed 23 of 25 passes thrown in under 2.5 seconds after the snap, completing negating any pass-rush. His 23 "quick" completions were the most in a game by a quarterback this season and by far the most in his career, beating the 19 he had during Week 7 in 2024. Two of his three touchdowns came on quick throws under 2.5 seconds. The Panthers tried to blitz Love, but he consistently found quick answers to beat potential pressure.
The Packers turned the ball over three times: Coleman Owen's fumble on the opening kickoff return, Christian Watson's fumble in the second quarter and Jordan Love's interception to start the fourth quarter. But the Panthers turned those three takeaways into all of three points. And the field goal came after Owen's fumble set up the Panthers inside the 30-yard line. Turnovers can be huge momentum-turning plays in games, but not if a defense stands tall. Jonathan Gannon's group made sure mistakes made didn't turn into a run of points for the Panthers.

Carolina Panthers WR Tetairoa McMillan had six receptions for 58 yards against the Green Bay Packers in Week 8. He was targeted a team-high 11 times in the loss.
SOURCE: USA TODAY
Why It Matters: With Bryce Young under duress on Thursday night, the passing game was primarily quick hitters with the hope that the wideouts could break a tackle or two and make a big play. It rarely worked out that way, however, and as a result McMillan averaged just 9.7 yards per catch. It was his third largely disappointing performance in his last five games and second in a row. We all saw what this passing attack could look like early this season, so McMillan's upside remains substantial, but the Panthers need to figure out a way to keep Young upright so he can take more downfield shots. While it's too soon to downgrade McMillan below WR2 status, his recent production has not been on that level.

The Green Bay Packers are 5-3 after beating the Carolina Panthers by a 27-19 final score on "Thursday Night Football" from Lambeau Field. There were **** ps along the way, especially early and late, but the Packers got three touchdown passes from Jordan Love and six sacks from Jonathan Gannon's defense to power what ended up being a winning performance.
Highlighting the good, the bad and the ugly coming out of Thursday night's win:
Jordan Love during the first three quarters, the adversity defense, and the pass-rush: Love was on fire for the first 45 minutes, completing 26 of his first 33 passes for 262 yards and three scores. He threw a pick early in the fourth quarter, starting a disappointing finish for the offense overall, but the Packers quarterback was terrific for most of the contest, playing on time from the pocket and consistently finding completions. Jonathan Gannon's defense was dominant at times, allowing only three points off three Packers turnovers, and the only three points came after the fumbled opening kickoff that gave the Panthers the ball in field goal range. It took a few crazy conversions for the Panthers to score a touchdown in the second half. The Packers were dominant up front, sacking Bryce Young six times and consistently disrupting the pocket.
The start, and most of the finish: How did the Packers open the game? By fumbling away the opening kickoff, dropping three first-quarter passes and committing a pre-snap penalty. The turnover spotted the Panthers three early points. To Green Bay's credit, the first quarter ended with the Packers leading. During most of the second and third quarters, the Packers were in complete control, leading 20-10 at the half and 27-13 with a chance to dagger the Panthers to start the fourth quarter. But Jordan Love threw a pick on the second play of the fourth, turning the game sharply, and the Panthers eventually scored on a 70-yard drive and had the ball down one score with a chance to tie the game. What should have been a comfortable, two- or three-score win ended up being a nail biter because the Packers made costly mistakes and couldn't run the ball. One more bad: Trey Smack missed an extra point, so the kicking worries continue to linger. The lost point mattered because it kept the Panthers within one score in the fourth quarter.
The run game. The Packers returned Aaron Banks to the lineup at left guard, and Josh Jacobs got a full workload against the NFL's worst run defense entering Week 8, but it wasn't nearly enough to awaken Green Bay's dormant run game. Jacobs turned 21 rushes into only 39 yards, and 18 of the Packers' 66 rushing yards came on a well-executed Savion Williams gadget play. The 25 designed runs to running backs gained all of 48 yards. Jacobs didn't have a run longer than six yards. It's possible the Packers run game just isn't going to happen in 2026. This is a historically bad start -- the Packers are just the 14th team since 1935 to rush for fewer than 500 yards

Arizona State basketball is expected to struggle in Randy Bennett's first year as head coach.
The Big 12 media says so. In the Monster Energy Big 12 Men's Basketball Media Preseason Poll, Big 12 media members picked the Sun Devils to rank just 12th out of 16 in the conference for the 2026-27 season.
This comes after a season where ASU went for a third straight campaign of not making the NCAA Tournament. They have not been past the first round of the NCAA Tournament in any of the previous 12 seasons.
Bennett comes into the fold after leading the Saint Mary's Gaels to five straight NCAA Tournament appearances. They made it out of the first round of those five NCAA Tournaments three times.
To make matters worse for ASU, the Arizona Wildcats rank No. 1 in the media poll. UA won the regular-season Big 12 championship and the Big 12 Tournament championship last season.

SATELLITE BEACH — Satellite kicked off the SSAA Atlantic state playoffs hosting Lemon Bay in the first round on Oct. 29.
The four-seeded Scorpions played their brand of football with efficient offensive play and stingy defense in a 31-7 win over the fifth-seeded Manta Rays.

It was a new challenge for the Scorpions defense as the Manta Rays operated a triple-option offense. Lemon Bay ended the game averaging 3.2 yards per carry as it totaled 144 yards on 45 attempts.

The UC Bearcats didn't have long to celebrate their upset of eighth-ranked Texas Texas on Homecoming last week.
That's because the Bearcats now face undefeated and No. 6 Utah, which has the nation's longest active win streak at 13 games. The Utes' last loss was in last year's "Holy War" to rival BYU in Provo, 24-21 Oct. 18, 2025. The Bearcats would benefit if the Utes looked ahead to this year's BYU game, which Utah hosts Nov. 7 at 10 a.m. at Rice-Eccles Stadium.
"I think for us, we need to show how much of an environment we have here," UC head coach Scott Satterfield said. " I know it's Halloween, but dress up and come out yelling in this game. We're going to need to have that home field advantage because it certainly helped us last week, and we know when we play here it's different for us because of that. Hopefully, our fans will show up and be loud."
Utah quarterback Devon Dampier, backup quarterback Byrd Ficklin and running back Wayshawn Parker have all taken direct snaps and are all threats as UC found out last year in a 45-14 walloping in Salt Lake City. Dampier threw for 213 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 78 yards. Parker ran for 104 yards with a touchdown. Ficklin had just 14, but also scored and is every bit the runner Dampier is when in the game. Sometimes, they're both in the game.
"They do a lot of that and they have the talent to put out there," UC coach Scott Satterfield said. "It makes you have to go over all this stuff. Defensive coaches sit in the office all day anyway; it just makes them sit longer to go over all the formations you could get. We call it 'chasing ghosts'. You don't know what you're going to get."

Carolina Panthers RB Chuba Hubbard carried the ball 22 times for 81 yards and a touchdown versus the Green Bay Packers in Week 8. He also caught seven passes (on eight targets) for 38 yards.
SOURCE: USA TODAY
Why It Matters: It was obvious that the Panthers wanted to duplicate their game plan from 2025 when they upset the Packers by handing the ball to Rico Dowdle and bleeding the clock. It worked for a time, but ultimately Hubbard wasn't nearly as successful. Still, the veteran back logged 29 touches for 119 yards and a touchdown during Thursday Night Football, which is strong production. The extra rest before a Week 9 matchup with the Broncos should help Hubbard heal up, and he's likely to be featured once again as Carolina works through some significant pass-protection issues. Hubbard is a low-end RB1 or strong RB2 right now.

Bayern Munich and Erling Haaland is a partnership that has almost happened three times.
Is a fourth attempt on the radar? Not according to Bayern Munich CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen:
Jan-Christian Dreesen on Erling Haaland's name being linked to FC Bayern, after Manchester City were found guilty of charges: "We have the best striker in the world in Harry Kane, and an attacking line that has no equal in Europe. So, from our perspective, the question of signing Haaland doesn't arise at all."
When asked if Bayern could even afford a player like Haaland at all, Dreesen replied: "We've proven that we can afford it. We can sign Premier League players. We've shown that with Kane, we've shown it with Díaz, and we've shown it with Olise." – but he says that Bayern have a wonderful team that they are very happy with, so they have no need for Erling Haaland.
Kane appears to be on the verge of—at least—a two-year extension. If that happens, it would remove any chance of the Bavarians taking a gander at Haaland should Manchester City get sanctioned into the abyss.

Carolina Panthers QB Bryce Young completed 23 of 41 passes for 209 yards, one touchdown, and one interception in a Week 8 loss to the Green Bay Packers.
SOURCE: USA TODAY
Why It Matters: It was clear from the jump that the Panthers wanted to control the game with Chuba Hubbard. It worked early, but once the Packers pushed out to a 27-10 lead, it was up to Young to move the ball. He had some success, mostly on quick-hitting passes, but was under constant duress, getting sacked six times on the night. The Panthers get a few extra days to regroup before facing the Broncos in Week 9. We'll see if that's enough to help get their protection issues sorted out and get Young back to the player he was in five games before the bye. Given his struggles over the last two weeks, however, it'd be a tough call to slot him into your starting lineup against Denver.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Baker Mayfield (thumb) was a full participant in practice Thursday, Oct. 29.
SOURCE: Buccaneers.com
Why it Matters: Mayfield returned to action in Week 7, but he only had to throw 11 times as the Buccaneers cruised to a win. He wasn't posting great numbers prior to the injury, so it wouldn't be wise to expect Mayfield to suddenly start delivering great stat lines. For now, he should be considered a QB2.

They made us sweat about it more than necessary, but the New York Islanders came through with a big two points against one of the league's heavyweights in the Minnesota Wild.
Matthew Schaefer tied and then surpassed Bobby Orr's teenage scoring record on the leaderboard, with two goals and an ******* ist tonight. Bo Horvat scored on the power play, and Adam Pelech picked up his first of the season to round out the scoring.
It wasn't the cleanest win for the Islanders, who at times struggled to keep up with Minnesota's pace, but they definitely grew into the game, and closed out a tough road trip with a win.
[NHL Gamecenter | Game Summary | Event Summary | Natural Stat Trick]
Joel Eriksson-Ek opened the scoring less than 30 seconds in on a shot that Ilya Sorokin probably wanted back, coming down the center of the ice with no traffic in the way. It was a little more back and forth after that, with the Islanders getting a few good chances.

Timberwolves' Rudy Gobert speaks up on his reluctance to throw it down appeared first on ClutchPoints. Add ClutchPoints as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
After Minnesota Timberwolves coach Chris Finch called out Rudy Gobert for his finesse plays during a combined 0-for-13 stretch, the starting center questioned his finishes as well. Amid a two-game skid, the Timberwolves lost Anthony Edwards to a knee injury that will keep him out for at least two months. As Minnesota will look to find success without their All-Star forward, many anticipate Gobert to step up offensively.
Instead, he finished with one point, four rebounds, and one steal in the Timberwolves' 119-114 loss to the Golden State Warriors. In addressing Finch's recent comments about finishing loud in the paint, Gobert agreed with the notion of dunking the ball more often, per Sports Illustrated Andrew Dukowitz.
"Sometimes I tell myself, 'Why didn't I dunk that, too?' I guess it depends," Gobert said. "I guess, most importantly, is to react, to be decisive. To be strong and to be decisive. If I'm going to dunk it, go dunk it. If they foul me and call it, it is how it is. But I gotta be more decisive and more balanced, more poised."

One compelling reason the words "Game 7" stir the sports fan's soul: It seldom happens.
Only six times in Bay Area history has a local franchise played in Game 7 with the championship at stake. And only three times has that captivating, tension-filled, winner-take-all event taken place here: Giants-Yankees in the 1962 World Series, A's-Mets in the 1973 World Series and Warriors-Cavaliers in the 2016 NBA Finals.
Now we have a fourth entry.
Saturday's Game 7 of the WNBA Finals at Chase Center, featuring the Golden State Valkyries and Atlanta Dream, counts as a milestone on multiple levels. It also will mark the first time a WNBA postseason series has reached Game 7 - the league adopted a best-of-seven Finals format last year, when Las Vegas swept Phoenix.
The previous year, in 2024, New York and Minnesota went the distance in their best-of-five Finals (the Liberty won 67-62 in Game 5). Any decisive game brings sporting theater, but Game 7s carry extra cachet - as the culmination of a long series, with sustained drama and wild momentum swings.
