New York City's pied-à-terre tax was designed to extract money from second-home owners wealthy enough not to live in the city full-time. A side effect no one planned for: it's pushing middle-class and working homeowners, people who already live in their houses, into estate-planning conversations they've never had before, at hourly rates they've never had to pay, for advice the wealthy have had access to for generations.
The rush of publicity accompanying the mayor's office highlighting a list of over 680,000 New York properties that could theoretically be subject to a new tax has inadvertently advertised how public most property data is. And it's advertised the benefits of seeking some totally legal privacy, or risk inadvertent doxxing, courtesy of Gracie Mansion.
"The wealthy and the ultra-high-net-worth have been in this game for a long time," said Myles Fischer, a partner who co-leads the Trusts and Estates practice group at Harris Beach Murtha. "The rest are sort of catching up." And that isn't cheap. Many middle-class and blue-collar homeowners are "being forced into a situation where they have to sit down with lawyers" to get planning advice that families with means secured years ago. After all, he added, "it's not that you have to be a rich person to have something worth protecting. We see it from across the board."
The trigger, in this case, was a public records disclosure. When the DOF released its supplemental pied-à-terre ****** sment file, the coverage focused on the penthouses and the LLCs holding them. But the unfiltered file swept in far more than luxury properties—it included modest homes in Bayside, single-family houses in Staten Island, properties whose owners may have had no idea their name, address, and ****** sed value were sitting in a publicly searchable dataset. Many still don't.
Fischer wasn't surprised by the reaction. "Anonymity is desirable when it can be achieved," he said, "but anonymity is also typically only one piece of the pie, so to speak. It's part of the tax plan, part of the estate plan, part of the ****** et protection, limitation-on-liability sort of pie." Privacy, in other words, is the door. The estate planning is what's behind it.

Allen Park — One day after star running back Jahmyr Gibbs missed the Detroit Lions' first training camp practice of the year, coach Dan Campbell said he's "not sweating" the negotiation tactic but did think an extension would be done by now.
Gibbs, the No. 12 pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, became extension-eligible this offseason and is expected to receive a deal that pays him north of $20 million annually.
According to a photograph from the Lions' website, Gibbs arrived in Allen Park for camp Tuesday. He and Atlanta Falcons running back Bijan Robinson are reportedly holding in for new deals as they look to reset the running back market.
"I shouldn't have said 'bellcow,' right?" Campbell joked, implying that he gave Gibbs too much leverage when he said during the spring that the team was going to "hang our hat" on him. "'Well, hey, Coach said bellcow.'"
Campbell said he's unsure whether Gibbs will return to the practice without a new deal, and mentioned Gibbs had "a little bit of a back" issue during the conditioning test but didn't indicate that it was something serious.

Serie A side Lazio have constantly lingered on the edge of chaos and something similar has no unfolded involving midfielder Kenneth Taylor and Rino Gattuso.
La Gazzetta dello Sport report that the incident took place during training today. Lazio are having their pre-season training sessions at the Formello and Taylor was present. The squad was undergoing a tactical drill under the orders of Gattuso today.
Taylor was hit by a teammate and then complained about it. This stopped the game and Gattuso thought this is quite normal during training. Taylor responded by verbally attacking the Italian.
An argument ensued and Gattuso reacted by calling Taylor out and sending him out of the training session. Without further comment, the midfielder went back into the locker room.
Training then continued as normal, obviously without Taylor. A meeting between coach and player is likely in the next few hours to see if—as it appears—the Dutchman will participate in the afternoon session without any issues.

On a recent episode of ETF Zoo, Bloomberg's Eric Balchunas made the point that some speculators lately had been getting these market-timing calls right. He later ran the numbers on ProShares UltraPro QQQ, the 3x leveraged Nasdaq-100 ETF.
This toe-dip into matching flows with performance got me thinking about "the other big trade" of the last year or so that's not AI: Energy. That's where all the headlines about insider trading have been, so taking the cue from Eric, I had to figure out: have ETF investors been playing the energy trade this well?
Betting on energy is the least secret, least insider trade in the world right now—unless you have access to the Oval, like some traders apparently do. There should be no edge in it. Short-term trading here is simply a bet that you know something the most important commodity market in the world doesn't know (or, you have better hunch.) Historically, this is a bad idea. That was my prior: disaster.

Former F1 designer and Jordan technical director Gary Anderson has urged Lewis Hamilton to own up to his recent mistakes instead of pointing the finger at others.
Over the past few race weekends, the seven-time world champion has picked up several penalties from the stewards, including two in Hungary that partly compromised his final result.
The first came in qualifying, when he was handed a three-place grid penalty for impeding Oscar Piastri. Having originally qualified second, it cost him the chance to challenge Lando Norris off the line at the start. The second came during the race, when a five-second penalty for speeding in the pit lane dropped him behind his teammate in the final classification.
In his latest column for The Telegraph, Anderson questioned Hamilton's recent performances, admitting he found it surprising that a driver of his experience had been making so many mistakes. He suggested the errors could either be the result of an unfortunate run of form or point to a more significant underlying issue.
"I have to say that I am surprised that, with all his experience, Hamilton is making these mistakes. It is difficult to say why exactly he is making them. Sometimes it is just a run of bad luck and the driver wonders why they are happening. Other times there is something deeper going on."

It's often said that you don't know what you have until it's gone. That's what happened to the Washington Commanders last summer when star wide receiver Terry McLaurin skipped offseason activities and missed training camp while he was engaged in contentious contract talks with the Commanders.
The two sides eventually agreed to a deal, but the damage was done. McLaurin, the ultimate team leader, missed valuable offseason work with quarterback Jayden Daniels. He was injured in Week 3, which some attribute to him missing training camp. Fair or not, McLaurin's absence was felt on and off the field last season.

The Euro has gone back and forth during the course of the trading session here on Tuesday as we continue to hang on by a thread. We are at the bottom of a recent consolidation area, and I do think at least at this point in time there are a lot of questions to ask when it comes to the Euro. Interest rates in America will be a big driver typically of this currency pair, and despite the fact that rates have drifted a little bit lower, they are still uncomfortably high, and there are concerns in the Middle East, which has a major influence on that as well.
The recent area of consolidation could be in the process of trying to form a double bottom; we'll just have to wait and see. Short-term rallies will more likely than not continue to be swimming upstream if recent history is to be believed.
The pound initially tried to rally but then gave back gains as the market is still hanging around the 1.33 level. This is with elevated US rates. There are concerns in the Middle East, and sometimes traders will run to the US dollar in times of concern. It is possible that's what's going on here. The market is likely to continue to be noisy, but it has decidedly turned bearish over the last couple of weeks.
And the US dollar continues to grind higher against the Swiss Franc. The positive swap differential favors the US dollar as traders continue to see value in the greenback. We had recently consolidated and now have broken out of that little consolidation range to show increasing bullish pressure.
The market is typically one that's very choppy and somewhat sideways, and more of a grind even when it does trend, so patience is something that I typically find I have to employ here against the Franc. But getting paid at the end of every day is a huge bonus here with that positive swap, and right now I think that is one of the main drivers.

Jul. 29—Multiple schools in the Miami Valley have indicated they do not plan to add girls flag football to their list of athletic programs.
Cox First Media surveyed area high schools about their interest in offering girls flag football as a varsity activity following its approval by the OHSAA as its 29th sport. No area school that responded to the survey provided a "yes"-type response outside of the schools that already offer the sport.
School administrators did provide positive feedback on the sport's growth and acceptance by the OHSAA.
Northmont athletic director Micah Harding indicated the school is not in a position to add any new programs as it attempts to avoid further expenses, but believes it could be something that is explored in a better financial situation.
Sustainability is also on the mind when it comes to growth. Miamisburg AD Jason Shade believes it would be difficult to ensure a program could make it through its infancy due to declining enrollment and a low percentage of upperclassmen females.

Panthers rookie wide receiver Chris Brazzell was injured in Wednesday's training camp practice and it looks like he's going to be out for an extended period of time.
Brazzell went down during a 7-on-7 drill and had to be carted off the field. Joe Person of TheAthletic.com reports that the third-round pick suffered an LCL tear that is expected to keep him out for up to eight weeks.
Head coach Dave Canales said that Brazzell was held out of a couple of earlier practices because of knee soreness, although Person reports that the injury is not believed to be related to the previous issue.
"It was just something that kind of started to get sore after the first couple of days, and then we just, he mentioned it to us," Canales said, via the team's website. "We started to look at it and we put him through some good recovery stuff and de-loaded him for a couple of days, got him back out there, and he couldn't finish the day."

Golf architect Kyle Phillips has broken ground on the course at the private Pandion Club in Estero, Florida. The new layout, intended to invoke the heathland courses of England with Lowcountry influences, is being built on the site of the former Old Corkscrew Golf Club that was closed earlier this year.
Phillips plans a par-71 course for Pandion Club, stretching to 7,220 with firm and fast playing conditions and a premium on strategic shotmaking. The new layout is scheduled to open in 2027 with membership capped at 280. The golf-only club will include a Lowcountry-inspired clubhouse and expansive practice facilities. The name Pandion is inspired by Pandion haliaetus, aka osprey.
The layout features sandy terrain that should promote Phillips' goals. Having built the top-ranked Kingsbarns Golf Links and Dundonald Links in Scotland and having studied courses around the world, Phillips said that heathland courses are situated on inland dunes, "like the ones we have in Florida."
Old Corkscrew and additional surrounding land was purchased in 2022 by The Hoffmann Family of Companies for $14.5 million, according to property records reported by the Naples Daily News. The Hoffmans purchased the Cottages at Old Corkscrew Golf Club for $4.5 million in a separate transaction. The Hoffmanns also own Old Collier Golf Club in Naples, as well as the Pittsburgh Penguins and Florida Everblades.

As he negotiates a new long-term deal with Detroit, Lions star running back Jahmyr Gibbs did not practice on Wednesday during Detroit's first training camp practice.
Gibbs is a hold-in, meaning he is at Lions training camp but not currently participating.
"Of course, you guys know how we feel about Gibbs and all of our guys, (Sam) LaPorta, (Brian) Branch. And so, we'll take this as it comes. This will kind of continue. It'll come as it comes. I think that's the best way to say it. And so, this is both sides working through something and we'll take it as it comes, but that's where it is," Campbell said of Gibbs to open camp.
The Lions executed the fifth-year player option on Gibbs back in April, keeping the star rusher under contract through the 2027 NFL season. Gibbs will earn $14.293 million in 2027 with his player option.
Gibbs, a 5-foot-9, 202-pound back, rushed for 1,223 yards and 13 scores a season ago. The Alabama alum's rushing yards ranked seventh in the NFL last season. Gibbs also added 616 receiving yards and five touchdown grabs, helping him eclipse 1,800+ yards from scrimmage for a second straight season.

Ashlynd Barker has a different feeling about Florida State football heading into the 2026 season.
The standout safety is in his third year with the program, and despite a record of 7-17 over the last two seasons and increased pressure, he feels the Seminoles have the chance to be "super good" this season.
Barker acknowledged it's early in preseason practice, but his belief is based on what he felt was a strong offseason and a lack of egos on the team.
"I was talking to K.J. (Kirkland) on the sidelines after we got off the field from a drive. I was saying, "We are going to be super good," Barker said after the first preseason practice.
"It's the first day I know, everyone can say that. I don't know why, but I just feel like there is something about this time. The main thing is there are no egos. You can say something to someone, and they won't talk back."

LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) — The solution to quarterback Caleb Williams' accuracy issues has Chicago Bears coach Ben Johnson bringing up a familiar number.
With training camp underway in his second season, Johnson said he is again expecting a 70% completion rate this year after his third-year quarterback failed to come close to that designated figure last year at 58.1%.
Williams believes he can record a higher percentage without flat-out predicting he'll approach the magic number.
Achieving it will require something he didn't do in his first two seasons, after being the No. 1 pick of the 2024 draft and then leading Chicago to an NFC North **** le in 2025.
"Just hit the easy ones when they're there," Williams said. "Be in rhythm with myself. Be confident in my guys, be confident within the play. Deliver a good ball. Deliver a catchable ball.

The Dallas Cowboys held their annual pre-training camp opening press conference on Tuesday, with Jerry Jones, Brian Schottenheimer, and Stephen Jones taking to the podium like usual. For the first time in a long time, these heads of state for America's Team coming to the podium marked something significant before any of the three even said a word – the Cowboys have made it to the true ramp up for 2026 without any significant off the field drama, major contract disputes, or just Cowboys drama for the sake of drama.
The Cowboys' quiet offseason is hopefully just the start of a recipe for success in the regular season and beyond, but it became clear that the team's secret sauce they believe in is, in fact, the coaching across the board. Jerry seemed to understand that at this point in his ownership tenure the last thing any diehard fan wants to hear him talk about is his ability to select coaches. What fans have wanted to see is not only the right coaches in place, which the Cowboys will have to now prove once real practices begin Wednesday, but Jones and the rest of the front office giving whatever coaches are in place the freedom and **** e to hone in on the details of actually doing their jobs.
