World football mourns the death of legendary Milan and Italy defender Baresi, who has died at the age of 66.
Among those paying tribute to Baresi was ex-Milan defender Maldini, a former teammate of Baresi with the Rossoneri and Italy national team.

Real Madrid are pursuing a deal to sign the Spain captain, who has entered the final 12 months of his contract at the Etihad. Rodri is receptive to the interest from Spain and open to a return to La Liga, having expressed his desire to return home

Hugh Freeze's eyes got big a few years ago when someone pointed out Kirby Smart took Georgia to the national championship game in his second season.
Freeze had been busy trying to downplay expectations early in his Auburn tenure, and he literally could not believe the reality of Smart's success timeline.
"His second (year)? Phew," Freeze said back then. "I don't know that that's accurate, but, um, anyway … "
Wikipedia exists to remind us Smart did indeed take Georgia to the national ****** le game in his second season, which infamously ended on 2nd-and-26 with the Bulldogs losing to Alabama in overtime.

Russia and Belarus will remain excluded from the next men's ice hockey world champions in 2027 in Germany, the ruling body IIHF has said.
A statement late Thursday its council decided that Russia will not be allowed to take part in several of its events including the men's worlds "due to ongoing safety, security and sporting integrity concerns."
It said a decision on a potential participation of Russia at next year's women's worlds would be made at a later stage.
Belarus remains excluded from the men's worlds and junior worlds for "ongoing safety and security concerns" but can take part in other events.
Russia and Belarus have been excluded from IIHF events since the start of Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

The Washington Commanders opened training camp on Wednesday, and by all reports, the defense has the early advantage over the offense. That's not a surprise. It's how things usually go this time of the year, especially when each side is installing a new scheme.
After an uneven start on Day 1 of training camp, quarterback Jayden Daniels was better on Thursday. Far too often on Wednesday, Daniels held onto the ball for a split second too long. While no contact is allowed right now, Daniels would've been sacked multiple times if it were a game.

I write this struggling to understand my feelings about Eddie Howe going and the current state of Newcastle United. I write this as a man getting older, and feeling it.

On late Thursday night, we finally had some free-agent wide receiver news. And it involved the Washington Commanders, sort of, as Deebo Samuel returned to the San Francisco 49ers on a one-year deal. Samuel spent last season with the Commanders, leading the team in receptions, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns.
With Samuel off the board, could we soon learn the fate of Stefon Diggs?
Per ESPN's John Keim, the Commanders are continuing to monitor the situation.
"There's only one guy that I think Washington would sign, and it's Stefon Diggs," Keim said on his podcast, the "John Keim Report," on Thursday.
"I would say they continue to monitor that situation, and you can take that however you want. This should then feed into its high-margin service revenue, which has consistently grown at a mid-teen rate.
Cook leaves Apple as having one of the best business models on the planet, making it easy for its next CEO to get off to a running start. The beauty of Apple is its closed ecosystem, which helps lock in customers. Once someone buys an iPhone, the cost of switching becomes increasingly difficult with each photo taken, subscription bought, and app downloaded. Users then become a part of Apple's huge service revenue machine. Apple is getting a high-margin revenue stream every time someone clicks on a search ad (as it gets a 36% revenue cut from Alphabet's Google), uses Apple Pay, buys cloud storage, or purchases a subscription or app.
Meanwhile, Apple just increased prices for several devices and certain service plans. This should be a nice revenue driver in the coming quarters after Cook leaves, giving incoming CEO John Ternus a solid revenue tailwind as he takes the reins. Ternus will also have time to execute a more comprehensive AI strategy for the company. That said, I wouldn't be surprised if Cook's decision to sit back and not throw huge amounts of money into chasing AI models proves to be a smart one.

On the final play of practice, though, Zvada walked on and drilled a 57-yard field goal after the ball had been clocked by backup quarterback Brandon Allen with :01 left on the clock. Braxton Berrios — The veteran wide receiver/return man made several catches on Wednesday. He backed that up with another productive day on Thursday. Berrios is making an early impression in the competition for one of the final roster spots.
Dominic Zvada — There were no placekicking sessions in Thursday's workout. On the final play of practice, though, Zvada walked on and drilled a 57-yard field goal after the ball had been clocked by backup quarterback Brandon Allen with :01 left on the clock. Score one for the undrafted free agent in his competition with Ben Sauls.
