The San Francisco 49ers remain a top-10 team, but dropped a spot in ESPN's newest power rankings following the 2026 preseason. The 49ers went from No. 8 to No. 9 after being overtaken by the Baltimore Ravens.
The 49ers have once again been hit hard with injuries before the season even starts. Ricky Pearsall is already out for the year, George Kittle is still working his way back from an Achilles injury, and the receiver room has taken additional hits with ailments to veterans expected to anchor the offense like Mike Evans. That kind of attrition at the skill positions is a real concern heading into Week 1, even if some of the team's top players are looking healthier at this point in the summer.
Beyond the injury list, there's also lingering uncertainty up front. San Francisco's offensive line still has soft spots, especially at left guard, that could be exposed against the more physical fronts in the division. The defense, while solid, doesn't project as an elite unit after finishing with an NFL-worst 20 sacks a year ago. It's never too early to look ahead at uniform schedules, right?
Last month, the Denver Broncos announced they will wear their alternate navy jerseys when they host the Buffalo Bills at Empower Field at Mile High on Christmas Day in Week 16. That rematch of last season's AFC divisional round playoff game will begin at 2:30 p.m. MT on Netflix.
A few weeks after the Broncos announced their uniform for the Dec. 25 showdown with Buffalo, the Bills announced they will wear their beloved alternate red helmet with white jerseys, light pants and red socks. A fitting look for Christmas Day:

The Chicago Bears have an opportunity to build off their success last year, reaching the NFC Divisional playoff round, sparked in a major way by the growth and play of quarterback Caleb Williams.

After setting their 53-man roster and 17-player practice squad, the Denver Broncos are now fully focused on preparing for their Week 1 road showdown with the Kansas City Chiefs on Sept. 14.
Denver swept Kansas City last season, but Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes missed one of those games due to injury, and KC is considered a favorite going into Week 1.
"We know we're playing a really good football team, a divisional opponent, Monday Night Football," Broncos coach Sean Payton said after practice. "It's not like Andy [Reid] and I have to go in and give our teams a pep talk. So you really focus on the process leading up to the game and how you handle the unique week that's ahead with the weekend, and then the bonus practice day Monday, and then the lead in.
"With a Monday night game, I spend more time thinking about the schedule to make sure that we're ramping up to play our best and it doesn't get stale because we're not playing on Sunday, if that makes any sense. But our players will know the significance of the first game, and I think it's the process and the details."

The Seattle Seahawks concluded their final rounds of roster cuts following their 9-9 preseason finale tie against the Kansas City Chiefs. They have also officially set their 53-man roster as they gear up to take on the New England Patriots to kick off the 2026 NFL season in Week 1. However, on their roster you will only see three running backs: Jadarian Price, George Holani and Emanuel Wilson.
Unfortunately, the reason for this is because the Seahawks have placed their otherwise presumed starting running back Zach Charbonnet on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list. This is unsurprising, considering Charbonnet suffered his ACL injury during the 41-6 blowout victory over the San Francisco 49ers in the Divisional Round of the playoffs. Given how late in the season this occurred, the beginning of the season was always going to be off the table for Charbonnet. Still, it's a cold splash of reality to see it actually come to fruition.
Charbonnet was one of the more critical, yet perhaps a little underrated, cogs in the Seahawks' offensive machine last season. The former UCLA product had 730 rushes and 12 rushing touchdowns. In fact, Charbonnet became the first Seattle running back to have double-digit rushing touchdowns since Marshawn Lynch had 13 during the 2014 campaign.
Of course, arguably the most important play of the season was Charbonnet's heads up decision to pick up the ball during Seattle's comeback win over the Los Angeles Rams. This was later ruled to be a successful two-point conversion which tied the game, and the Seahawks would eventually go on to win in overtime.
Charbonnet will miss games against the Patriots, Cardinals, Commanders and Chargers. The earliest he could be allowed to return will be the Week 5 home game against the San Francisco 49ers, but even that feels unlikely. Seahawks Wire will continue to monitor his health status moving forward.

The NFL and NFL Players ****** ociation announced this week, out of the blue, a new procedure for imposing automatic suspensions on players who commit three violations of one of five specific safety rules: hip-drop tackles, horse-collar tackles, launching, hits on defenseless players, and blindside blocks.
There's a lot to process in this yellow-card style approach to stacking violations in advance of automatic consequences.
First, it's important to remember that a suspension only happens when a player commits three violations of one of the five specific rules. In theory, a player could have two violations as to each rule and not be suspended.
Second, some have asked what happens when there's a fourth violation. For each violation after the third, the player gets suspended for one game. And, because a player who has three violations in a given year carries two of them into the next season, a player who is suspended once will continue to be one infraction away from another suspension for the rest of the current season — and for all of the next season.
Third, the formula extends into the postseason. If the player gets his third violation in Week 18, he misses the first playoff game. If he gets his third violation in the wild-card round, he'll be suspended for the divisional round (if his team wins). If his team loses in the playoff round when the third violation occurs, he'll miss Week 1 of the next season.

Nike and the NFL revealed the 2026 Rivalries uniforms for teams in the AFC South and NFC North, including a new design for the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Jaguars will wear the new uniform on Nov. 1 during a home game against divisional rival the Indianapolis Colts.
The Rivalries program launched in 2025 as a collaboration between Nike, the NFL and participating clubs to create uniform designs influenced by local team communities. The 2026 release expands the initiative into its second year with eight new team uniforms.
The Jaguars uniform combination features a white jersey, black pants and white socks with prominent teal, gold and black accents. A teal-glossed helmet displays a gold face mask and a "904" mark representing Jacksonville's area code. The outer collar features a "Since "95" inscription honoring the franchise's inaugural season and cursive script spelling out "Jaguars" references the team's Southern roots.

If you keep score, Sean Payton wants to win.
And for the first time in eight preseason games, the Denver Broncos lost. As Payton said after the game, it clearly wasn't good enough against the Green Bay Packers on Friday night. For what it's worth, each Denver Super Bowl win had a loss in the preseason, so there's that.
If Payton and the rest of Broncos Country are looking for a "win" from Friday, it's how Bo Nix looked and played. In his first game back after breaking his ankle against the Buffalo Bills in the AFC Divisional Playoff game, the Broncos quarterback was fantastic. In particular, the throws to Jaylen Waddle and RJ Harvey were absolute dimes.
If the first game action is any indication, Denver's offense is going to be fun and hard to stop. And Nix didn't seem to miss a beat.
"Honestly, yes. It was just very smooth, very easy to get back out there and go," Nix said to the media after the game. "Honestly, the other 10 guys in the huddle made it pretty easy for me as well. Just going out there, and doing my job, and treating it like a practice rep.

The Washington Redskins changing their name to the Washington Football Team and then ultimately to the Washington Commanders after an 18-month search was the defining moment of the decade for the team according to Rotowire.
Many moments could be considered defining for the Commanders, but the name change is certainly a big one, since it also coincided with the change in ownership. Under new ownership, the Commanders hired general manager Adam Peters and head coach Dan Quinn, and their first big move in the NFL Draft was to select quarterback Jayden Daniels.
Picking Daniels may actually turn out to be Washington's defining moment of the decade. As a rookie, Daniels took the Commanders to the NFC Championship after playoff victories against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the wild card round and the Detroit Lions in the divisional round. The Houston Texans needed to make a move after losing Jayden Higgins for the 2026 season, but the team's initial response feels underwhelming. Houston is signing veteran NFL wide receivers Sterling Shepard and Zay Jones, but neither player looks capable of truly replacing what Higgins was expected to bring to this offense.
There is a reason why both of those players were unsigned in late August; they aren't good enough to be on NFL rosters. The Texans needed to do more than this to help C.J. Stroud and the rest of the offense.

The upstart Bears nearly earned their way into the NFC championship game but were narrowly defeated by the Los Angeles Rams in overtime in the NFC divisional round. Despite the loss, it was something of a coming-out party for Caleb Williams and Ben Johnson on the national stage.
On the other side, the Bengals endured a disappointing campaign marred by another slow start and an injury-riddled season for Joe Burrow. As a result, head coach Zac Taylor has decided to play the Bengals' starters, including Burrow, Ja'Marr Chase, Tee Higgins and Dexter Lawrence, in an effort to avoid another slow start to the regular season.

The Broncos had a rough outing in their preseason home opener against the Packers. And even though the 33-13 loss doesn't matter, coach Sean Payton wasn't happy with the performance.
"Obviously that wasn't good enough," Payton told reporters after the game. "There weren't a lot of things — I said this after the game. Just pick a topic. Pick penalties, we lose there, kickoff, kickoff return, we lose that battle. Rushing numbers, we lose that. We can't just say, 'Hey, this is preseason [game] two.' Each phase saw their share of what ended up being the final score. So tomorrow we've got to be able to come in, coaches the same way, and look closely at what we're doing and get the corrections made. You can't not pay attention to these games, these scrimmages, these important steps towards the start of the regular season."
Although he said quarterback Bo Nix's first game action since breaking an ankle in the divisional round was "solid" (he led a six-play 65-yard touchdown drive in in his only snaps of the game), Payton generally wasn't thrilled with the offensive output.
"We'll look at the tape, but we had too many minus plays, too many penalties offensively." Payton said. "I don't know how many third-and-10 or more we had, but quite a bit, right?"
Asked about whether Nix will play in the preseason finale, Payton revisited his frustration with the first-teamers.

Chicago Bears training camp is in full swing ahead of the 2026 regular season. Under second-year head coach Ben Johnson, the Bears are looking to build on their success from last year and keep pace in a crowded NFC with important meetings and practices at Halas Hall.
Thursday's practice was a breath of fresh air as the Bears traveled to Cincinnati to take on the Bengals for a joint practice ahead of their preseason game this weekend. It was a back-and-forth affair with each team's offense trading blows, while their defenses stepped up in key moments.
Following every Bears training camp practice, we at Bears Wire will highlight the top players who stood out on the field. Here are the players who stood out from the joint practice:
Thursday's practice was the first time quarterback Caleb Williams had faced a different defense than his own since the divisional playoffs and he gave the Bengals defense fits while impressing the Cincinnati media in attendance. FOX 19's Jeremy Rauch said Williams "cooked" during 7-on-7 drills. The Bears quarterback delivered touchdowns to wide receivers Rome Odunze and Kaden Davis, along with a strike to tight end Colston Loveland (more on him in a bit) in 11-on-11s. His score to Odunze came while on the move to his left as the receiver broke free.
It wasn't perfect by any means, though. Williams threw a pair of picks and got sacked near the end of practice. But NBC 5 Cincinnati's Charlie Clifford jotted Williams' stats and had him completing 16-of-26 passes, including 10 straight in 11-on-11 drills. Meanwhile, Bengals star defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence, who intercepted Williams, called him a "special quarterback" after the practice. Clearly, Williams made a strong impression on the Bengals beat with some strong throws.

Right now, there seems to be a clear option on the table and certainly a player looking for a bigger role.
According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, teams have reached out about acquiring veteran receiver Kayshon Boutte in exchange for a draft pick. Since the Texans now seem to be in the market, Rapoport believes that could be the dream destination.
Boutte, 24, had a promising season last year as the No. 2 target for Drake Maye en route to the Super Bowl. The LSU product caught 33 passes for 551 yards and a career-high 6 touchdowns, including a game-sealing touchdown reception in the divisional round playoff win over the Texans.
But the Patriots added A.J. Brown and Romeo Doubs in free agency and trades this offseason and gave each top money, so they're expected to be the new top two weapons opposite tight end Hunter Henry. This likely reduces Boutte's exposure in the offense and makes him a name worth dicussing via the trade markets.

Broncos quarterback Bo Nix wanted to play last week. He will play this week.
After being held out of the preseason opener on the artificial turf at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Nix will play in the second preseason game on Friday night against the Packers. He has not played in a game in 216 days since breaking his right ankle in the divisional playoff game.
"I'm super excited,'' Nix said, via Chris Tomasson of the Denver Gazette. "It's always a blast to play at home. It's great to get in front of our fans. It'll be fun to get out there for the first time this year, put the pads on, and go out and play a game."
Nix underwent two surgeries on his ankle, one on Jan. 20 and another clean-up procedure in late April.
Friday's game will be the first time Nix has had offensive coordinator Davis Webb call the plays.

The Nats' struggles against divisional opponents continued with a sweep at the hands of the last place Mets. Thankfully they will be playing a non-divisional opponent to start the week. The Nats have been quite good in interleague play with a 22-17 record. They will look to keep that going against the Rangers.

During their wild roller coaster 2025 season, which included several comeback victories, the Chicago Bears energized the city and their fanbase to great lengths, also getting their first playoff victory since the 2010 season.
In head coach Ben Johnson's first season, Bears fans were going viral on social media for their celebrations. But after their loss to the Los Angeles Rams in the divisional playoffs, no one in the Bears organization is resting on year of fun, including All-Pro left guard Joe Thuney.
Thuney's arrival was part of an extreme makeover to the offensive line ahead of the 2025 season, and as he went on to win the NFL's Protector of the Year award, the Bears offense went to another level with quarterback Caleb Williams. Recently, Thuney said he enjoyed all the viral moments the team and fans had last year, but that the team is not settling on their success from last year.
"It was special, so many videos after the game of close wins, seeing families hugging and crying together," Thuney said. "Chicago is such an iconic franchise, and it's great getting back into the playoffs, getting a win, and winning the NFC North. PHILADELPHIA – Neil Magny met the media Saturday after his win over Ramiz Brahimaj at UFC 330.
Magny (32-14 MMA, 25-13 UFC) upset Brahimaj (13-7 MMA, 5-5 UFC) on the prelims at Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia. Magny's second-round TKO was his UFC record 25th as a welterweight and put him in second place for most UFC wins of all time.
Magny just turned 39, and though many have pegged him as a divisional gatekeeper the past decade, given his biggest winning streak has been three fights, he said retirement is not on the horizon, even when he hears about the numbers by his name in the record books.
"I have no idea what a retirement fight looks like (due to records), so I can't even put a number and say, 'Oh, that's a good retirement fight.' I have no idea," Magny told MMA Junkie and other reporters at his post-fight news conference. "Retirement fight is not even on my radar. After training, most guys get done and throw their gloves on a mat. I refuse to drop my gloves on a mat after training because it symbolizes retirement, so to speak. So I'm holding on to these things as long as possible and going out there fighting as often as possible.
"… The day that I'm no longer able to do this is inevitable. It comes for all of us. But as long as I'm able to go out there and continue doing this, continue loving it, I'll keep showing up."
