NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The New Orleans Saints are moving on to Week 2 sounding more emboldened than disappointed by their season-opening loss to Detroit.
"We're in a good place," Saints veteran safety Justin Reid said Monday, a day after the 31-30 overtime loss to the Lions. "When we click on all cylinders, it's evident what we can do."
After erasing a three-touchdown deficit in the second half, the Saints matched the Lions' touchdown in overtime and tried to win the game with a 2-point conversion that failed when second-year quarterback Tyler Shough's pass fell incomplete.
"A lot of teams would have folded," Reid said. "That's not the way that we're built."
Second-year coach Kellen Moore said the Saints "get to learn a lot from that game."

LAWRENCE, Kan. — Week 1 was no fluke from QB1.
No. 23-ranked Missouri football beat Kansas 38-21 on Friday night in its fiercest rival's home stadium, and new starting quarterback Austin Simmons was one of the standout players on the field in his first Power-conference test as the Tigers' field general.
Mizzou (2-0) now has back-to-back Border War wins. It looks a lot like Eli Drinkwitz's offense has found a QB who can elevate the passing game, top.
Here's what Simmons' Border war statline looked like:
Simmons was 19-of-29 passing (65.5%) for 292 yards, three touchdowns and zero interceptions.

Miami QB Darian Mensah puts up more video game numbers in rout of Florida A&M originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Darian Mensah can almost literally do no wrong.
Miami's electric quarterback completed 14 of 15 passes for 252 yards and three touchowns -- all in the first half -- in the Hurricanes' 77-7 win over Florida A&M on Thursday night.
That's a passer rating of 300.5, only slightly higher than the 257.3 rating he posted in his season opener. He completed 27 of 30 passes for 401 yards and five touchdowns in a 45-6 win over Stanford last week.
That means through two games, the Duke transfer has completed 41 of 45 passes for 653 yards with eight touchdowns and no interceptions.

NFL Expert Predicts Patriots Regression After Super Bowl Run originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The New England Patriots transformed themselves from a rebuilding team into the AFC champion during Mike Vrabel's first season as head coach.
One national NFL expert does not expect them to reproduce that success in 2026.
Sporting News' Vinnie Iyer predicted New England will finish 10-7, surrender the AFC East to the Buffalo Bills and exit the playoffs in the divisional round.
That outcome would still represent a strong season for a team led by 24-year-old quarterback Drake Maye. It also would feel disappointing after the Patriots came within one victory of winning another Super Bowl.

INEOS encountered plenty of problems when trying to move Manchester United first team stars on, so they instead let go of numerous academy graduates this summer.
The likes of Toby Collyer, Louis Jackson, James Overy, James Scanlon, and Habeeb Ogunneye were all sold, and a few deals were justified.
But it came as a surprise to see the Red Devils part ways with Louie Bradbury, considering he had signed his first professional deal less than three weeks ago.
The Wales Under-19 international was on fire last season, scoring 10 times in all competitions, including twice for the Under-21s, despite being only 16 at the time.

In order to prepare for what's to come in his maiden season, Philon has spent a majority of the offseason in the gym looking to work on his craft and get the much-needed reps he needs in the gym to show what he can do on a regular basis.

Mantua, Cuba, is a small fishing village on the northwestern coast of the island; legend says it was founded by shipwrecked Italian sailors in the early 1600s. Los Arroyos, the neighborhood where Randy Arozarena grew up, is a tiny tip of the island, about as close to Cancún as it is to the capital Havana, where Lazaro Montes was born. Maybe their respective hometowns account for their personality differences: Randy is quieter, more removed, shying away from media appearances, while Laz is as big and boisterous as the bustling capital city itself, eager to try out his English with whoever wants to talk. Making his big-league debut tonight, "Big Laz" had an appropriately splashy welcome to the big leagues that will guarantee his megawatt smile will light up highlight reels tonight both in Seattle and beyond, accounting for two of the Mariners' nine runs tonight. But Randy Arozarena also continued doing what he's done all season, leading the team offensively and providing an early separating blow that helped the Mariners outlast the Red Sox in a grueling 9-6 win at Fenway.
The Mariners got on the board right away when Dominic Canzone absolutely obliterated this hanging changeup from Red Sox starter Jedixson Paez:
Your browser does not support the video tag. Download the video.
Unfortunately, the Red Sox took that run right back with a blast of their own, a four-seamer from Bryan Woo that didn't quite get top rail enough that Mickey Gasper hammered for a matching blow.
But the Mariners offense picked up their starter in the top of the second, pouncing on Paez for five runs of both the small and large ball variety. Josh Naylor got things going with a leadoff double, followed by a line-drive single from Cole Young – not super hard hit, but any contact in the air is good from young Cole, who's been really struggling lately with pounding the ball into the ground. That brought up Lazaro Montes for his very first big-league at-bat in an RBI situation. Facing a flagging pitcher on a bullpen day, Montes took a studied, disciplined at-bat, getting ahead 2-0, whiffing at a changeup on the plate, and then declining to chase two more changeups to earn his way on base. J.P. Crawford put the Mariners ahead on a sacrifice fly, and then Brock Rodden checked in with an infield hit of his own, hustling down the line to allow Cole Young to score. That also turned the lineup over for Randy Arozarena, who continued his audition to Get Real Paid by the Red Sox next season by crushing a sinker middle-middle that would have wound up on Lansdowne Street if not for an inconveniently located billboard.

WOODLAND HILLS, Calif. –– Monday afternoon in Woodland Hills carried the weight of something unspoken.
The kind of weight that comes not from pressure but from pure, unfiltered possibility.
Les Snead has spent months ******* embling a roster so loaded that the depth chart reads as Pro Bowl ballots and backup units look like starting rotations.
But rosters do not win championships; cultures do.
And on this particular Monday, while two generational defenders watched from the margins and a sports medicine wizard worked his quiet magic, the culture spoke loud enough to echo into September.

The Baltimore Ravens drafted LaJohntay Wester because they were fans of what he could do with the ball in his hands. A skilled returner and 2023 First-Team All-American, he landed on Eric DeCosta's radar, resulting in the former Colorado Buffaloes star's 2025 sixth-round selection.
He stacked 198 yards on 16 punt returns and another 246 on ten kick returns. It's now year two, and throughout training camp and the preseason, he has shown he may offer much more than just explosive special teams play. Head coach Jesse Minter recently went as far as to praise him publicly.
Three preseason games are in the rearview mirror. Every week brought another sign that Wester was climbing the organizational ladder. More opportunities followed. More praise arrived. More importantly, more production and trust were earned.
That trust was no longer subtle. Wester's stock is rising. He capped Baltimore's 41-3 preseason finale victory over the Washington Commanders with a touchdown reception, continuing a summer that has steadily strengthened his case for a meaningful role heading into the regular season.
Speaking with the media after Friday night's win, head coach Jesse Minter again tipped his cap to Wester, highlighting the progress Wester has made since arriving in Baltimore.

Paderborn return to the German top-flight this season following their promotion play-off victory over Wolfsburg. The club return to the Bundesliga for the first time since relegation following the 2019/20 season, having finished 18th.
Paderborn previously had two spells in the Bundesliga, in 2014/15 and 2019/20, being relegated both times after just one season.
Survival will be their main goal, but just how likely is that?
They will face Mainz in their opener at the MEWA Arena on Saturday, August 29.
Paderborn had a reasonably impressive preseason. After thrashing the amateur Blau-Weiß Ostenland 18-0, they went on to get some decent results, losing only one match (2-0 against Magdeburg).

The Rochester Red Wings erased an early two-run deficit, but the Buffalo Bisons broke a tie with a four-run sixth inning and held on for a 6-3 victory Tuesday night at ESL Ballpark. Rochester finished with six hits, while Buffalo collected eight.
The loss dropped the Red Wings to 76-49, while Buffalo improved to 63-63. Grant Rogers earned the win for the Bisons, and Matt Krook was charged with the loss.
The Bisons wasted little time getting on the board in the opening inning. Rudy Martin Jr. walked and Jay Harry followed with a single before Sean Keys brought home the game's first run on a groundout. Yohendrick Piñango then lined an RBI single to center to score Harry and give Buffalo a 2-0 lead.
Rochester starter Zak Kent settled in afterward, allowing two runs over 2⅓ innings before Andry Lara delivered 2⅔ scoreless innings of relief to keep the game within reach.
The Red Wings responded in the fifth.

Via Spotrac, Jones had earned $122.84 million through the 2025 season. That total includes more than $108 million from six seasons with the New York Giants, a brief stop with the Minnesota Vikings, and $14.6 million from his first year in Indianapolis.
The number will climb more in 2026.

Ideal way to kick off the season!
Bayern picked up right where they left off last season by winning the first trophy of the campaign, the German Super Cup, against rivals Dortmund.
And yet, the Bavarians were far from being in steamroller mode. They did manage to produce a very convincing first half, during which they scored twice, led by an already twice-decisive Olise: first with an ****** ist for Brown, who beat Kobel with a left-footed side-foot finish, then by getting on the scoresheet himself after a Bellingham turnover and a solo run capped with an outside-of-the-foot strike.
The French maestro carried Bayern and set the tone before the match became much more complicated in the second half. Vincent Kompany's men had already had an early warning with a Bensebaini goal disallowed at the end of the first half.
In the end, Dortmund had to wait until the 72nd minute, when substitute Fabio Silva managed to pull one back against a Bayern side that had become very passive. It was not enough, however, to stop the Bavarians from winning the 11th Super Cup in their history, despite a tense finish marked by Bensebaini's sending-off and a Beier shot (90+4) that sent a shiver through the entire stadium.

Sometimes, when all else fails, you've just got to test the keeper from distance and hope to get a bit lucky.

Annika Speery tied the game in the 77th minute on a shot from about 25 yards out that dipped just under the crossbar. Midway through the second overtime, Peterson won it as she hammered a driven free kick from over 40 yards out that deflected in off the keeper's hands.

The Arizona Cardinals have a number of position and roster battles still going on in the preseason. At one position, there are two battles. One is for a starting job and the other is for what likely is the last spot on the roster at the position.
That battle is at inside linebacker.
Mack Wilson's role as the starting "Mike" linebacker, relaying defensive play calls to the rest of the team, is set. He returns to that role after missing the final nine games of the season with a rib injury.
At the other spot, veteran Jack Gibbens and second-year linebacker Cody Simon battle, but there might not end up being a winner.
Head coach Mike LaFleur said on Tuesday that whoever starts might be a week-by-week affair.

Bayern Munich executive Max Eberl has confirmed that Jamal Musiala is recovering well following a frightening collapse on Saturday. The German international was at the center of alarming scenes during Bayern's Telekom Cup clash with RB Leipzig when he fell to the ground in the closing stages of the 3-1 victory.
Reports indicate that the sweltering heat in Bavaria was a contributing factor in the distressing moment for the 23-year-old, who was able to walk off the field following treatment. The incident unfolded in the final stages of the match, when Musiala began to stagger with no opposing players near him.
Ismael Saibari was among the first players to reach him before his Bayern teammates and medical personnel rushed to Musiala's aid. BILD reported that the midfielder suffered dizziness while competing in temperatures of around 33 degrees, resulting in circulation issues.

The Dodgers struggled to get anything going offensively on Sunday, as they only mustered one run while falling to the Milwaukee Brewers 6-2.
After a 15-pitch first inning where he abandoned two baserunners, Tarik Skubal was the victim of the Brewers' tenacity with two outs. Jonathan Ornelas lined a single to left before Skubal walked William Contreras to load the bases. Luis Lara hit a soft ground ball to shortstop, but Tommy Edman misplayed the feed from Mookie Betts as Milwaukee struck first again. It took Skubal 33 pitches and seven hitters faced to get out of the inning.
All the Dodgers could do offensively against Logan Henderson over their first two innings were leadoff base hits from Shohei Ohtani and Betts. Both men couldn't advance further on the base paths as Henderson needed just 28 pitches over his first two innings of work.
The Dodgers had gone hitless over their next eight trips to the plate after the Betts single, but Max Muncy gave the Dodgers their first run on the season against Henderson with a two-out, game tying solo home run in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Skubal was one out away from setting down eight hitters in a row since the third inning, but Jackson Chourio ignited another two-out rally with a double to right center field. Jake Bauers' third hit against Skubal plated Chourio to give Milwaukee the lead again before Andrew Vaughn made it three straight two-out hits. After combining for just 19 pitches between the third and fourth innings, Skubal needed 28 pitches to complete the fifth.

A new lightweight contender has arrived.
Quillan Salkilld (13-1 MMA, 6-0 UFC) had to eat a punch or two, but mostly tore right through Mateusz Gamrot (26-5 MMA, 9-5 UFC) in the UFC Fight Night 284 main event at a newly refurbished Meta APEX in Las Vegas. And now that more fans can take in a show like Saturday's, they got a treat out of the gate.
A Salkilld win by submission over a credentialed wrestler and grappler like Gamrot was one of the least likely predicted outcomes in the headliner. But afterward, Salkilld said his rear-naked choke with 35 seconds left in the first is just the type of performance lightweights can expect – and he has his sights set on the top five.
"I just proved I'm the real f*cking deal now. These top five (lightweights) better (watch out)," Salkilld said on the microphone with Daniel Cormier. "I believe I can get it done within the first minute or the last minute. ... I think I deserve someone who's in the top five or close to it."
Salkilld tried to get a quick start and took the center quickly. In some tight exchanges early, Salkilld landed and forced Gamrot to look for a takedown – not at all unexpected. He got a single-leg briefly, but also appeared to be hurt.
