ESPN's Adam Schefter dropped a bombshell just before the Denver Broncos' matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs on "Monday Night Football", reporting that some members of the Broncos staff explored the idea of bringing in former New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees for the AFC Championship Game in January.
Broncos head coach Sean Payton didn't know Denver's then-offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi and offensive ***** istant Pete Carmichael were talking about Brees joining the team after Bo Nix suffered an injury in the Broncos' overtime win over the Buffalo Bills in the Divisional round.
The Broncos were set to turn to backup quarterback Jarrett Stidham to lead the offense against a stiff New England Patriots defense in snowy conditions at Empower Field at Mile High.
Denver wasn't sure if Brees would make the start over Stidham, a 2019 fourth-round pick by the Patriots who had only made four career starts before the AFC championship.
A Broncos source told Schefter that Brees was confident he knew how to win that type of contest.

EAST HARTFORD - No defending state champion lost more starters on both sides of the ball than the Berlin football team.
But the few Redcoats who returned as starters from last year's perfect CIAC Class M ***** le team showed why Berlin is, well, Berlin.
Behind an offensive line that wore down East Hartford and spearheaded Berlin's double-wing attack, the Redcoats ruined Ty Outlaw's return to his alma mater's sideline with a 42-14 CCC victory Friday night.
"It was terrific, a great start for our guys," said Berlin head coach John Capodice, who lost 19 starters off last year's undefeated state championship team. "But it's a brand new season. We lost all those seniors. We had a dream season. Now our goal is to go 1-0 every week and we were fortunate to do that tonight."
Junior Brandon Sadowski, one of the Redcoats who started on last year's 13-0 ***** le team, led the way with 134 yards rushing and two touchdowns on just 15 carries.

49ers news: Mike Evans era off to red-hot start with debut history not seen since 2023 appeared first on ClutchPoints. Add ClutchPoints as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Mike Evans' debut with the San Francisco 49ers couldn't have gone any better following their 27-7 win over the Los Angeles Rams in Australia on Thursday night.
Evans started the 13th season of his NFL career, his first with the 49ers. Following 12 years with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the veteran receiver decided to start a new chapter of his career by signing with San Francisco for a three-year deal worth up to $42.4 million.
San Francisco valued Evans' services, needing to bolster the receiving attack after parting ways from Jauan Jennings. Safe to say they got a solid upgrade with Evans' presence on the field.

Elena Rybakina is one win away from the world number one ranking, but the Kazakh star says her main goal in her US Open quarter-final clash with Zheng Qinwen on Wednesday is to advance toward a third Grand Slam ******* le.
"Number one ranking is, of course, one of the goals," Rybakina says. "But I think the main focus for me is to win the ******* les, and then the ranking will follow up."
Rybakina arrived at Flushing Meadows as one of four women with a chance to supplant Aryna Sabalenka atop the rankings, and the only one with her fate in her own hands. Reaching the semis will send her to the summit for the first time, and she could even get there if she loses -- if Sabalenka, world number three Jessica Pegula and fourth-ranked Coco Gauff all fail to lift the trophy.
Rybakina, who has shown no sign of the foot injury that hindered her US Open preparations, will be out to halt the remarkable run of Zheng -- the Paris Olympics gold medallist who had to come through qualifying thanks to a rankings plunge in the wake of elbow surgery last year.
Gauff, in the quarters for the first time since she won the US Open ******* le in 2023, will take on fifth-seeded French Open champion Mirra Andreeva for a place in the semis while men's top seed Alexander Zverev faces Dutch veteran Botic van de Zandschulp.

The Serie A weekend is now over, and with today's two matches, the third round of the league will be as well. We are still only in the very early stages of this season, but a few verdicts have already come in.

We know, for example, that as predicted, Inter are still the team to beat. It was already clear on paper, but the pitch has confirmed it. Three wins from three matches - nothing extraordinary so far - plus the icing on the cake of that crazy comeback against Napoli: an exciting run, top of the table alongside Roma, and the feeling, this time for real, of having not quite two full teams but at least plenty of quality alternatives available.
Against the Azzurri, Chivu called on Thuram, Curtis Jones, Carlos Augusto, Çalhanoglu and Bonny from the bench, managing to turn around the 0-2 lead Allegri had built. Just a few days before their Champions League opener, the Romanian coach allowed himself the luxury of rotation against the runners-up of Italy, and still came away with three points (however hard-fought they were).
This opening stretch of Serie A has also told us that the two genuine challengers to Inter in the Scudetto race seem to be Roma and Como, with Juve and Milan still in the midst of a full revamp and a Napoli side that is changing its identity and already sits 6 points off the top.

Toluca did it again.
Alexis Vega scored in the fourth minute with Helinho adding an insurance goal in the 70th minute as the Diablos Rojos beat Monterrey 2-0 Sunday, Sept. 6 in Houston to win the 2026 Leagues Cup final.
In addition to winning the two-bowled trophy awarded to the winner of the tournament that pits Liga MX clubs against their MLS counterparts, Toluca also secures a bye to the round of 16 of the 2027 Concacaf Champions Cup. Monterrey and León, which beat Club América earlier Sunday in the third-place game, also qualify to the CCC through the Leagues Cup.
Vega took advantage of lax play from Monterrey to give Toluca an early lead. After a Toluca scoring chance seemed to go wanting when it bounced off the post, Monterrey midfielder Orbelin Pineda had the ball at his feet in the box. He was too slow to clear it, however, and Vega picked his pocket. The Toluca attacker finished off the opening goal with his first touch of the ball, much to the frustration of the pro-Rayados crowd in south Texas.
It was a frenetic start to the match, with a pair of Monterrey scoring chances sandwiched around Vega's opener. Rayados forward Hugo Cuypers put a header just off target in the third minute, and in the sixth minute, Toluca goalkeeper Hugo Gonzalez was able to stop a shot on target from Lucas Ocampos.

Von Miller found a unique way to get his preferred jersey number with the Dallas Cowboys: He made a teammate a part-owner of his chicken farm.
Miller will wear No. 40 this season after striking a deal with fullback Hunter Luepke, who will switch to No. 30, according to The Dallas Morning News.
Instead of paying Luepke cash, Miller offered him a stake in Greener Pastures Chicken, his Texas-based poultry business.

NEW YORK (AP) — Alexander Zverev rallied just in time to avoid becoming the first men's No. 1 seed to lose in the first round of a Grand Slam tournament since 2003, edging Lorenzo Sonego 6-4, 3-6, 6-7 (7), 7-5, 6-4 in a match that ended Wednesday morning.
Zverev won his first major **** le at the French Open, lost to top-ranked Jannik Sinner in the Wimbledon final, then became the No. 1 seed in a major for the first time when Sinner had to withdraw with a right knee injury.
He couldn't cash in on repeated chances to break Sonego's serve for much of the night and was in danger of becoming the first top-seeded man to fall in his first match in a major since Ivo Karlovic beat Lleyton Hewitt at Wimbledon in 2003.
It hasn't happened at the U.S. Open since Stefan Edberg lost to Alexander Volkov in 1990. Zverev finally broke through against Sonego's serve late to pull out the match in 4 hours, 52 minutes.
Zverev is 7-0 against Sonego, an Italian who came in 1-9 against top-10 men in Grand Slams. But Sonego's speed around the court allowed him to track down **** that on other nights would have been winners, and he came up with enough clutch serves to make Zverev just 5 for 22 on break points for the match.

The Milwaukee Brewers have the best record in baseball, but are trying to lock up the top seed in the National League.
They have been without Abner Uribe recently, after placing him on the injured list with a right forearm flexor strain. Uribe started a rehab ***** ignment with High-A Wisconsin on Tuesday. He has pitched in one minor league game this season, striking out one batter in a scoreless inning.
Uribe's injury was believed to be non-serious, but Pat Murphy dropped a slightly concerning update on Friday. He will need to throw in another rehab game before he's ready to return.
"It didn't feel great the next day, and we wanted to make sure he had a great catch play the next day," Murphy said of Uribe regarding his Tuesday outing. "If you bring him back here and he gets (hurt again), then you're in a bind. I think it's wise to handle it this way."

After the free agency frenzy and chaos of the NFL Draft died down, many NFL teams continued to add players to their rosters. The Washington Commanders signed nine undrafted rookie free agents after the draft was done, and a handful of them have made a legitimate case to remain on the final 53-man roster when the time comes.
One player attempting to make a case for himself is wide receiver Jaden Bradley. NFL Insider and **** yst Brian Baldinger breaks down one of Bradley's receptions in the Commanders' loss to the Detroit Lions on Saturday.
.Commanders Lions UDFA Jaden Bradley with the best catch of week 2 in preseason. Great way to get noticed pic.twitter.com/sNxIVH0r2A
"Trying to make a football team as an undrafted free agent like Jaden Bradley right here, from the slot," Baldiner begins. "Spray fade right here, all right? And you come down with this kind of a catch right in front of the bench, in front of Dan Quinn, in front of Jayden Daniels, like guys jumping up and down, celebrating the catch right there. That's cool. Antonio Williams, the rookie wide receiver, joining him.
"And watch this throw right here. Jaden Bradley is from DeMatha High School; he's a local product. Good blitz pickup here, by the way. Kaliakmanis lets it fly, and watch this catch; this is the best catch I've seen in the second week of preseason so far. That's how you get people's attention. That's how you make the team. That's how you get noticed as an undrafted free agent. Look at Terry McLaurin right here, coming down to celebrate with the rookie free agent. That's cool. I like that."

LeBron James is the latest NBA player to have his finances come under scrutiny following a new report from Bloomberg that was published on Tuesday. According to the story's headline, "LeBron James Borrowed $300 Million From Insurers Arranged by Guggenheim."
Guggenheim is the financial services firm run by Mark Walter, the guy who owned the Los Angeles Lakers for about a year. He recently sold the team to Josh Kushner and Bob Iger. The Dodgers might be next. You're probably familiar with all that.
MORE: LeBron James leaving Los Angeles looks even better now
If you are familiar with all that, the headline sounds pretty juicy. However, if you actually reading the article it sounds more like LeBron James was doing some basic rich guy stuff. So anyone expecting a year-long investigation into the Lakers committing cap circumvention is going to be disappointed. The story doesn't seem to have anything to do with LeBron choosing or re-signing with the Lakers. Via Bloomberg:
"James' borrowing from the two Midwestern insurers — structured as sales of ***** et-backed bonds — began when he was at the Cleveland Cavaliers and his career was poised for new heights."

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — Green Bay Packers coach Matt LaFleur had his tongue firmly planted in cheek as he discussed how he would make sure his players avoid fights in their joint practice with the Arizona Cardinals.
"If there's an issue, I'm going to tell the guys, 'Hey, you come tag me in. They can tag in my brother. And we'll throw down on the 50,'" LaFleur joked on Monday.
Wednesday's joint practice at Green Bay will mark the first time the LaFleur brothers have coached against each other since Mike LaFleur was hired as the Cardinals' coach. They'll also meet Friday in a preseason game at Lambeau Field.
Matt LaFleur was asked about his parents' potential divided loyalties this week.
"They'll probably look like a Christmas tree — green and red," he said.

Manchester City showed improvement from the side who were bashed 3-0 by ******* nal in last Sunday's Community Shield - but for most of this game it looked as if Enzo Maresca was going to start with consecutive defeats.
Replacing a legend is always difficult - as David Moyes experienced when Sir Alex Ferguson left neighbours Manchester United in 2013 - and the late comeback will come as a major relief in their first Premier League game without Pep Guardiola in a decade.
City did not exactly promote from within when hiring Maresca, who quit as Chelsea manager at the start of 2026, but the Italian was Guardiola's City ******* istant in 2022-23 and would perhaps be seen as something of a continuity candidate.
It was a very shaky start though and they went 1-0 down at home on the opening day of a Premier League campaign for the first time since 1995-96 - the season they ended up being relegated.
Maresca's team selection confused many, with six players who have played most of their City games in defence starting on Sunday - including Guehi in midfield.
