ESPN reported Brees and Denver Broncos coaches discussed Brees returning to play for the franchise in last year's AFC Championship Game. The Broncos lost quarterback Bo Nix to an ankle injory in their AFC Divisional Round victory over the Buffalo Bills.
Brees, 47, had not played a game since his retirement from the New Orleans Saints after the 2020 season. According to ESPN, he wanted to work out prior to making any commitments. After doing so, he said he encountered wrist pain and decided against pursuing a return.
ESPN's report said even Broncos coach Sean Payton -- Brees' coach with the Saints -- did not know of the discussions until the summer.
The Broncos instead went with their actual backup, Jarret Stidham, in a 10-7 loss to the New England Patriots.

Of course, there would have been one major obstacle to overcome. Drew Brees had just turned 47 and hadn't played a competitive NFL game since January 17, 2021 in a playoff loss to Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. However, Brees wouldn't have been alone in making an incredible return as Philip Rivers had come out of five years of retirement to play three games for the injury-plagued Indianapolis Colts. While Rivers went 0-3 as a starter, he completed 63% of his passes and threw 4 TDs to 3 INTS.

DETROIT (AP) — The Detroit Lions know they are asking a lot of star running back Jahmyr Gibbs.
His next major test will come Thursday against the Buffalo Bills.
For the first three years of his career, Gibbs was paired with David Montgomery in Detroit's "Sonic and Knuckles" partnership. Montgomery wasn't a little-used backup, either. He averaged 853.3 yards and 11 touchdowns over the past three seasons.
Montgomery picked up where he left off Sunday, scoring three touchdowns, but that was for the Houston Texans in a 36-31 loss to the Bills.
At the same time, Gibbs was dealing with his new workload as Detroit's only experienced rusher. He averaged a career-high 18.8 touches per game last season, but got 34 in Sunday's 31-30 overtime win over the New Orleans Saints — three more than his previous high.

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — As first impressions go, the new-look Buffalo Bills under Joe Brady opened the season looking much like the team previously coached by Sean McDermott.
And that's not an altogether good thing.
Josh Allen was a near one-man offensive show in a 36-31 win at Houston that featured eight lead changes, including four in the final quarter. He threw two TD passes and had two rushing for his 25th four-touchdown career outing; improved to 24-8 when topping 300 yards passing; and pulled out the victory with his 26th game-winning drive.
Breathtaking as the performance was, it was also reminiscent of the recent past with Allen once again required to patch over the defense's deficiencies. This was one of the reasons the Bills changed course in January by firing McDermott after Buffalo's defensive dud in a 33-30 overtime playoff loss to Denver.
Though on Sunday the defense came up with a victory-sealing stop on Greg Rousseau's strip-sack of C.J. Stroud with 9 seconds remaining at the Bills 18, it marked one of the few times Buffalo got the Texans off the field.

That streak won't continue in the pros.
Entering a short week, Detroit held a walk-through on Monday, Sept. 14, and released an estimated report that ruled Miller (knee) out of practice.
Lions coach Dan Campbell said Miller's injury shouldn't be a major concern long-term, but the tight turnaround for Thursday night's game against the Buffalo Bills could make it difficult for him to return in time for the next game.
"Because it's a short week, and it's really about how fast can we — some of this is the recovery. What does he look like tomorrow?" Campbell said. "It's always, man, the day after a game, especially the first game of the year, it's like, where are these guys at? It's really tough to say. We're going to know a lot more tomorrow. Ryans: "You definitely have to trust the process when it just comes to doing what we're supposed to do. The season opener is a game quarterback C.J. Stroud will probably want to forget.
While he had 274 passing yards and two touchdowns, he also had two fumbles, including one on the final drive that doomed the Houston Texans in their opener against the Buffalo Bills.
Stroud is already focusing on turning the page to Week 2 against the Cincinnati Bengals.
"It's part of the NFL," Stroud said. "You have to be able to learn from your mistakes and then go onto the next week and try to get a win. We have a tough Bengals team coming in here. They're really good. We have to be on our P's and Q's, try to win that game. We'll fix our issues by tonight and tomorrow, turn the page and keep moving forward. One thing that DeMeco [Ryans] said in the locker room that I agree with is, we're going to keep our chins high and our chests poked out. We did a lot of positive things, do we wish we won it? Yes. But at the end of the day it's a long season.
"You have to give us a little bit of credit there. I think I second his message with that."

Rousseau dominated the game. Despite Buffalo's shortcoming on defense by allowing 31 points, Rousseau consistently stood out.
Rousseau had four tackles, including two for loss, five quarterback hits, with two strip sacks including the game-winning takedown of Texans quarterback CJ Stroud. Rousseau knocked the ball out of Stroud's hand and it was scooped up by linebacker Terrel Bernard with only seconds left on the clock.

Former Tennessee football wide receiver Joshua Palmer made the game-winning play for the Buffalo Bills in their season opener against the Houston Texans on Sept. 13.
Palmer was targeted only twice, but his last target from quarterback Josh Allen resulted in a 34-yard touchdown reception with 1:34 remaining in the fourth quarter that lifted the Bills to a 36-31 win at NRG Stadium in Houston.
It had been 680 days since Palmer last scored an a touchdown in an NFL game.
Palmer played four seasons at UT between 2017-20 and caught 99 passes for 1,514 yards and seven touchdowns. The Los Angles Chargers picked Palmer with the 77th overall pick in the third round of the 2021 NFL Draft.
One game into his sixth season in the NFL, Palmer has now caught 205 passes for 2,624 yards and 11 touchdowns. He enjoyed three productive seasons with the Chargers, but has seen his playing time decrease ever since. In 2025, his first year with the Bills, Palmer played the fewest offensive snaps of his career.

Allen directed a 96-yard touchdown drive late in the fourth quarter to lift Buffalo to a 36-31 victory over the Houston Texans. He completed the comeback by finding Joshua Palmer for a 34-yard touchdown with 1:36 remaining.
Houston still had an opportunity to answer, but Greg Rousseau forced a C.J. Stroud fumble near the Buffalo goal line to secure the victory. It was an early-season reminder that defeating the Bills requires more than taking a late lead. Opponents must finish the job without giving Allen another meaningful possession.
Allen completed 20 of 29 passes for 334 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran for two scores, accounting for four of Buffalo's touchdowns in the win. His final touchdown throw was made possible by a missed opportunity from the Texans.

Colorado head coach Deion Sanders was not in the mood to celebrate a 31-point victory Saturday.
The Buffaloes moved to 2-0 with a 52-21 win over Weber State at Folsom Field. Still, Sanders arrived in the media room focused on the points Colorado left on the field, 13 penalties, special teams mistakes and an offensive performance he felt had another level available.
Colorado quarterback Julian Lewis threw for 366 yards and four touchdowns while accounting for five total scores, and running back Micah Welch became the first Buff to rush for 100 yards in a game since 2022. Sanders praised the playmakers who contributed, though the consistent message after the rout remained the same: make the Buffaloes a team capable of winning and dominating.

The Colorado Buffaloes entered Saturday needing a more confident passing game after a tight opening win at Georgia Tech, and Julian Lewis supplied it before Weber State even had time to settle into the afternoon at Folsom Field.
On Colorado's first offensive snap, Lewis hit DeAndre Moore Jr. for a 66-yard touchdown. A few minutes later, Lewis found Joseph Williams for a 63-yard score, and Colorado had already put Weber State in a position where it needed to chase the game.
From my seat, the biggest development was how quickly Lewis played. The Buffs came out attacking downfield, trusting Lewis to make the reads and allowing the receivers to use their speed against Weber State's coverage.
Colorado's 52-21 win moved the Buffs to 2-0 for the first time since 2023. Lewis completed 17 of 23 passes for a career-high 366 yards, four touchdown passes and no interceptions. He added a 3-yard rushing touchdown before halftime, accounting for five scores before leaving the game with 5:50 remaining in the third quarter.
The 52-point afternoon came with a few defensive concerns, particularly in the secondary, but Colorado showed far more life offensively than it did a week ago. Lewis played like a quarterback who could give this team an explosive passing game, while Micah Welch ended one of the program's longest rushing droughts.

The Houston Texans host the Buffalo Bills in Week One this season, and they'll be looking for their third consecutive home victory over Buffalo in the series between these two AFC foes. Buffalo lost close games at NRG Stadium in each of the last two seasons, dropping a 23-20 decision during the 2024 season and a 23-19 contest last year.

MCALESTER — McAlester scored two touchdowns in the final seven minutes, including the game-winner with 3:02 remaining, to rally past Ada 47-40 in a wild finish to the annual rivalry game Friday night.
The Cougars, who piled up well over 500 yards of total offense, scored with 8:23 left to take a 40-33 lead. But the Buffaloes answered with a 54-yard touchdown pass at the 7:32 mark to knot the score at 40-40.
McAlester then marched 75 yards in six plays for the winning touchdown.
Ada will enter district play at 0-3, while the Buffaloes improved to 1-2.
It was the third-highest scoring game in the long series between the two rivals.

As Detroit's 2026 regular-season opener on Sunday, Sept. 13 against New Orleans nears, the Lions listed just one player with an injury designation on their Friday injury report.
Defensive back Christian Izien was listed as questionable after being a limited participant for the third straight day with his groin injury.
"He's doing well. We felt really good about him. He's close. I want to see what he looks like running around today and then knowing that we're going on a short week after this, that'll have a bearing on it, too. But, he's moving around really well. I feel like he's a little ahead of schedule in a good way. We'll see," Campbell said of Izien's injury status on Friday morning.
Izien, 26, signed a one-year, $2 million deal with the Lions in March.
Unfortunately for Izien, three consecutive limited practices puts him behind the eight-ball in terms of being elevated to active on Sunday. The Lions' Week 2 matchup against the Buffalo Bills is Thursday, Sept. 17. With that short turnaround, if Izien misses the opener, he could miss each of the Lions' first two games of 2026.

The New England Patriots are collecting former Buffalo Bills.
New England is signing veteran defensive tackle DaQuan Jones to a one-year contract worth up to $6 million, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
The deal includes a $3.5 million base salary.
Jones becomes the sixth former Bills player currently with the Patriots, joining fullback Reggie Gilliam, wide receiver Mack Hollins, offensive lineman Greg Van Roten, tight end Shane Zylstra and punter Mitch Wishnowsky.
Zylstra and Wishnowsky were released by the Bills as part of final roster cuts two weeks ago and are on New England's practice squad.

On the eve of their regular season debut, the Houston Texans have announced another significant injury. Rookie DT Kayden McDonald is apparently suffering from an ankle injury and will begin the regular season on injured reserve. It has been a rough start to the season for the New England Patriots. They dropped the Super Bowl rematch against the Seattle Seahawks 13-10 and lost their star wide receiver AJ Brown for at least the next four games in the process with a high ankle sprain.
Brown exited the game in the third quarter and did not return. New England scored all their points in the first half and were held without points after Brown exited. Their top receivers are now Romeo Doubs, Demario Douglas and Mack Hollins although quarterback Drake Maye could not seem to get on the same page as Doubs who did not have a single catch.
Douglas finished the opener with five catches but only 20 yards while Hollins was the Patriots' leading receiver with 51 total yards. Rookie tight end Eli Raridon scored New England's only touchdown of the game in the second quarter.
Not only are the Patriots without Brown for the next four weeks at least, but they are also currently without running back TreVeyon Henderson who missed the opener. It is unclear whether or not he will be available for New England's week two matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Nonetheless, adjusting the offense to Brown being out of the lineup is going to be difficult for the reigning AFC Champions who will face the Jacksonville Jaguars and Buffalo Bills without their top receiver.

TikTok creator molly.rutter posted a video describing her highly anticipated first date with a foreign student that, since its publication, has drawn over 15 million views and generated over 7300 comments. Molly appeared excited on her way to the date and said she liked him when they met in person. But by the end of the date, she said things had taken a different turn.
At the beginning of the video, Molly filmed herself on her way to meet her date and said she was excited to see him. She said he was from India and that it was his first time in the United States. She added that he attended a university in Buffalo, New York, where he studied artificial intelligence.
Molly said they had spoken on the phone before meeting and that she found him attractive from their initial conversation. This seemed to add to her excitement. Because he was still getting familiar with Buffalo, she said she planned to take him to one of her favorite food spots in the city.
Shortly after their date began, she gave an update on how it was going. She described him as "Absolutely adorable" and said that she found him physically appealing. Molly also said that she detected some shyness from her date, which only made her more fond of him.
As the night progressed, she was all smiles and said they had already planned a second date. However, she was a bit disappointed when he initially said he couldn't go to a second location because he had classes the next morning. She decided to meet up with her friend after the date.

Drake Maye's presumed No. 1 receiver was placed on IR designated-to-return on Friday, meaning he will officially be out for the October 4 contest in Orchard Park

A.J. Brown was held to three catches for 26 yards in the Patriots season loss to the Seahawks before he left the game with an ankle injury, and now we have more clarity on whether or not he'll be available for New England when they face the Bills early in October.
