Republicans enter spring legislative sprint

The House and Senate are speeding toward quick — and finite — action on the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement funding and on expiring surveillance powers.
Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla., said at Semafor World Economy on Monday that he’d back the plan to send roughly $50 billion in frontloaded Immigration and Customs Enforcement and border security funding for Customs and Border Protection, a crucial conservative boost for the plan.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune said Republicans are aggressively moving to “limit” the measure to help shi

Trump issues stark threat ahead of deadline but says Iran has time to capitulate

Airstrikes hit two bridges and a train station in Iran on Tuesday, and Iranian officials urged young people to form human chains to protect power plants, as US President Donald Trump warned that a “whole civilization will die tonight” if Tehran does not meet his latest deadline.
The US also struck military targets on the Iranian oil hub of Kharg Island, according to a White House official.

Three charts that are warning signs flashing for Trump on Iran war

President Donald Trump's popularity among the American public has been eroding steadily since he returned to the White House in January last year.

Senate Republicans worry they’re losing ground in the midterms

Senate Republicans are growing anxious about the midterms.
They once felt like they had a glidepath to keep or even grow their majority in November, unlike in the House, where GOP control is razor-thin and members have become increasingly on edge about Democrats returning to power.
But the mood is shifting, according to interviews with 10 GOP senators and aides, as the U.S. engages in open-ended war in the Middle East, rising oil prices threaten to slow the economy and President Donald Trump stokes intra-party divisions over a

In April 2023, RFK Jr. launched a long-shot Democratic primary challenge against then-President Joe Biden. Six months later, he was running for the White House as an independent before ultimately abandoning his

Donald Trump's return to the White House in 2025 marked a stunning political comeback, with the US president pushing an aggressive MAGA policy from trade to international relations. While the US leader has shaped the events of a turbulent 2025, the new year may prove harder to manage for Trump as the midterm elections approach.
For Europeans, that is one factor to watch after a difficult year in which the future of the transatlantic relation, the bedrock of economic prosperity and security for the continent since the end of the Cold War, came under scrutiny as MAGA went after the EU.

In New York City, the typical household spends more than half of its income on rent and 100,000 people sleep in homeless shelters every night.
“This is what a full-blown affordability crisis looks like,” said Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine in a December report. Median rents in Manhattan have topped $5,400 a month.
The city’s cost-of-living crisis extends to food, child care and other parts of daily life: 1.4 million people, or 15% of the city’s population, is food insecure. A family must earn $334,000 to afford child care for a 2-year old, according to US Census Bureau data.
