Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell did not think the hit that concussed quarterback Kyler Murray during Sunday's season opener was a dirty or malicious play by Green Bay Packers defender Javon Bullard.
The hit was penalized 15 yards for unnecessary roughness, and Murray is now in concussion protocol, but O'Connell was not willing to blame anyone for the resulting injury given Murray's slide at the end of the play.
"No. It was a violent, physical play," O'Connell said. "As fast as those things happen out there, it would be one thing it was a head-first slide and a clear declaration, but I don't put any fault on anybody there."
Murray slid late and sideways, and he ended up getting sandwiched between Bullard and Lukas Van Ness as he went to the ground.

Texas hasn't started well against Ohio State on Saturday.
The Longhorns' first drive ended in a fumble, and the Buckeyes took a 3-0 lead. After that, Texas got the ball back, but it ended in an interception. It's probably one of the craziest interceptions you'll ever see.

Jermichael Finley called the moment "surreal" as he returned to Green Bay last weekend.
Thirteen years after his professional career ended at Lambeau Field following a devastating injury, the former Packers star tight end was back inside the stadium for the beginning of his son's college football career.
Kaydon Finley, Jermichael's oldest son, is a freshman at Notre Dame.
His Fighting Irish kicked off their 2026 season against the Wisconsin Badgers on Sunday, Sept. 6, at Lambeau Field as part of the Shamrock Series, the first college football game at the Packers stadium in 10 years.

The Oklahoma Sooners have won 50 conference championships; however, the Sooners haven't won a conference **** le since 2020. That includes not winning the SEC, or even playing for an SEC **** le in the two years they've been in the league.
Oklahoma hopes to change that this season. It started with a strong 51-0 opening-game statement against the University of Texas at El Paso Miners. The Sooners still have the Michigan Wolverines and New Mexico Lobos before entering conference play. They start that journey by facing the back-to-back conference champion on the road, the Georgia Bulldogs. They then take on the Texas Longhorns in Dallas, who have dominated Oklahoma in three of the last four seasons.
After Oklahoma's strong showing against the Miners, its SEC championship odds have moved up. According to ESPN's Football Power Index, the Sooners have a 5% chance to win the conference **** le.
Oklahoma's 5% SEC championship probability may not seem high, but it ranks No. 6 in the SEC, and the most important part of the season is still ahead. Oklahoma comes in behind Texas, Georgia, LSU, Alabama, and Texas A&M.

The Knoxville Smokies capped the regular-season home slate at Covenant Health Park with a 6-5 win over the Chattanooga Lookouts on Sept. 6, winning the series four games to two.
Knoxville went 37-31 in home games during the regular season, including three straight wins over the Lookouts to close the final homestand.
"To win the last home series, (it took) a lot of grit, a lot of fight with these guys," Smokies manager Lance Rymel told Knox News. "Hopefully, they'll keep it rolling."

Beyond the defeat to AS Monaco last Sunday, it was a bad way for Olympique de Marseille, who lost two players to injury. Geoffrey Kondogbia suffered a muscular injury and, as confirmed by Bruno Genesio, won't be fit to face Paris FC this weekend.
Tochukwu Nnadi sustained a more serious injury. The Nigerian only came on at half-time but did not see out the match. He withdrew with what looked to be a serious knee injury. An ACL injury was feared. The injury is indeed serious, and it is suspected that it is an ACL. Speaking to La Provence, Nnadi's agent revealed that many consultants advised immediate surgery.
However, he has opted against surgery in order to ensure a quicker return. "We are aware of the risks. We know that he could feel pain. We know that it won't be easy, but it is Nnadi's decision," said his agent, who added that the midfielder "could not abandon OM at such a time".
Genesio is lacking options in midfield. Speaking on Friday, he revealed that he had tested full-back Ulisses Garcia in the position.

Chelsea are approaching the final weeks of the transfer window with an unresolved question at their centre. Enzo Fernandez has been linked with a move to Manchester City throughout August, and the commercial logic of selling is not difficult to construct. What is considerably more difficult is justifying strengthening a direct rival at a moment when that rival's most glaring weakness is precisely the position Fernandez occupies.
Fernandez cost Chelsea €120 million in January 2023. He was bought to be the deep-lying conductor of a new-look midfield – the replacement for Jorginho, the organiser around whom creativity would flow. That vision has never been fully realised at Stamford Bridge, and the reasons why are well-documented.
Every manager Chelsea (7.04) has appointed since his arrival has struggled to make a Fernandez-Caicedo double pivot function out of possession. Fernandez is not physically built to cover large central ***** es. His defensive awareness is sharp enough for international soccer, where Lionel Scaloni's Argentina have found ways to manage around his limitations, but has never been sharp enough at club level to survive without significant structural support.
Enzo Maresca's solution last season was to move Fernandez into the left pocket, push a fullback deeper into the midfield beside Caicedo and slow Chelsea's possession game to keep the team compact. It improved the collective structure and allowed Fernandez to play his best soccer at Chelsea, scoring 15 goals across all competitions. But it came at a notable cost, most visibly, the significant dip in Cole Palmer's form.
Xabi Alonso is not going to replicate that approach. His 3-4-2-1 system places Morgan Rogers and Palmer as dual attacking midfielders behind the striker. That is precisely where Fernandez would be best utilised. But Chelsea paid £117 million for Rogers this transfer window to fill that exact role. The positional arithmetic does not work in Fernandez's favour.

WBO president Gustavo Olivieri has categorically denied Hamzah Sheeraz's allegations of corruption after Janibek Alimkhanuly was installed as the mandatory challenger for Sheeraz's WBO super middleweight ******* le.
Alimkhanuly, the former unified middleweight champion, failed a VADA anti-doping test for a banned substance just days before his scheduled three-belt unification with Erislandy Lara this past December.
The fight was canceled, but the WBO later terminated Alimkhanuly's suspension early and has now controversially installed him as Sheeraz's mandatory challanger, despite Alimkhanuly having never competed at 168 pounds.
Sheeraz was unhappy with the WBO's ruling and made his feelings clear in an interview with Uncrowned's Ariel Helwani this past month.

The NFL and NFL Players ****** ociation announced this week, out of the blue, a new procedure for imposing automatic suspensions on players who commit three violations of one of five specific safety rules: hip-drop tackles, horse-collar tackles, launching, hits on defenseless players, and blindside blocks.
There's a lot to process in this yellow-card style approach to stacking violations in advance of automatic consequences.
First, it's important to remember that a suspension only happens when a player commits three violations of one of the five specific rules. In theory, a player could have two violations as to each rule and not be suspended.
Second, some have asked what happens when there's a fourth violation. For each violation after the third, the player gets suspended for one game. And, because a player who has three violations in a given year carries two of them into the next season, a player who is suspended once will continue to be one infraction away from another suspension for the rest of the current season — and for all of the next season.
Third, the formula extends into the postseason. If the player gets his third violation in Week 18, he misses the first playoff game. If he gets his third violation in the wild-card round, he'll be suspended for the divisional round (if his team wins). If his team loses in the playoff round when the third violation occurs, he'll miss Week 1 of the next season.

Brandon was praised for making plays down the field in scrimmages, and his athleticism will bring a new element to the RPO and maybe even option game.
It's going to come down to the little things though. The right checks, the right reads, getting through those reads quickly enough and keeping the offensive tempo when Heupel wants to operate with pace. Brandon is sure to make some freshman mistakes, that just comes with the territory. Can he make enough big plays down the field to keep defenses honest and the focus off of DeSean Bishop and the ground game? That's the key to me.
Tennessee's defensive line room has completely transformed in the past couple of seasons after having a bunch of veterans exit the program. It's going to be a new look for Garner's group in 2026, with no more Eason, Moi, Bailey or Josephs to lean on. The torch is being passed to guys like Xavier Gilliam, Nathan Robinson, Tyree Weathersby, Isaiah Campbell, Ethan Utley and several more. Veteran Daevin Hobbs is expected to lead the group and needs to take a big jump.

NaLyssa Smith has been ruled out for the remainder of the 2026 season, the Las Vegas Aces announced Thursday. Smith, one of the Aces' starters and a key part of last year's championship team, suffered a non-contact left leg injury against the Toronto Tempo on Sunday and left the game immediately.
Smith was the fourth-leading scorer on the Aces' active roster with 11.7 points per game and was the second-leading rebounder with 6.4 per contest. She was also leading the WNBA in field-goal percentage (63.8 percent). By most advanced metrics, she was the most valuable player on Las Vegas outside the big three of A'ja Wilson, Jackie Young and Chelsea Gray.
"Lyss is a soldier," Wilson said postgame Sunday. "God has his hands on her, and we're going to continue to be beside her through this whole process."
The Aces acquired Smith on June 30 last season. She joined the starting lineup one game later, and the team went 21-5 the rest of the way before winning a third **** le in five seasons.
The team now has a gaping hole at the power forward slot. Head coach Becky Hammon often closes with a small lineup, with either Gray or Jewell Loyd playing the 4 on defense. Another day passes, and the growing Willie Lampkin hype train adds yet another passenger. What started as the Philadelphia Eagles' quest to find depth has evolved into their discovery of another piece of what they hope will become one of the NFL's best offensive lines.
Two preseason games have been played. One remains, and Willie Lampkin appears to be making a compelling case that he could be one of them. Lampkin's night ended early during Philadelphia's 24-21 preseason loss to the New England Patriots, a development that often serves as a positive sign this time of year. When coaches believe they have seen enough, there is little reason to expose a player to additional snaps and unnecessary injury risk.
Much has been made about Lampkin being undersized, but he has spent the summer proving that measurements do not always tell the full story. At roughly 5-foot-10, Lampkin does not look like a traditional NFL offensive lineman. What he lacks in size, however, he continues to make up for with leverage, technique, effort, and an aggressive playing style that has become impossible to ignore.

With two races remaining in the regular season, the NASCAR Cup Series heads north this week for the Dollar Tree 301 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.
The winner of five of the first nine races this season, Tyler Reddick is the pole-sitter for Sunday's race in Loudon, New Hampshire. It's Reddick's first pole win since April at Kansas, and he's aiming for his first victory since then as well. The driver of the No. 45 Toyota for 23XI Racing is fighting through a bit of a midseason slump as he's finished 25th or worse in six of the last 10 races.
Reddick has had some solid results mixed in there, running second at Pocono, finishing inside the top-10 at Atlanta and the Brickyard 400, and salvaging an 11th-place finish last weekend at Richmond after catching a caution at the right time. Reddick's team could use a victory this weekend to build some momentum ahead of the postseason Chase.
"We fight through those hard days very well as a team. When we get into the Chase — I mean, ideally on paper, you don't want to have a bad race, but when it does happen, you know it's important to respond the right way," Reddick told USA TODAY Sports this week. "And I feel like our team does that. When something goes wrong, we don't just throw our hands up in the air and start complaining. We get to work. We start figuring out ways that we can make the most of the day or get out of the hole completely and still try and win the race."
Josh Berry will join Reddick on the front row and is aiming for what would be his fourth consecutive top 10 finish — something the 35-year-old has never pulled off before in his Cup Series career. Berry, driving the No. 21 Ford for Wood Brothers, ran second at New Hampshire last season.

The Chicago Sky-Golden State Valkryries game on Friday night was interrupted in the third quarter after multiple ******* toys were thrown on to the court at Wintrust Arena.

Sky guard Natasha Cloud sounded off on the fans who have taken part in the disruptions, calling them "lame as f***."

The Atlanta Dream-Los Angeles Sparks game on Thursday in Los Angeles was halted and a male suspect was given a citation after being detained by arena security. KANSAS CITY, MO - Suddenly, Detroit Tigers pitcher Troy Melton didn't look comfortable.
He stomped on the mound in Kauffman Stadium, trying to fix his landing spot. He knelt behind the rubber and scraped at his cleats. The usually unflappable pitcher seemed out of sorts at the end of his outing in a 5-2 loss to the Kansas City Royals o Friday, Aug. 21. He gave up a pair of home runs, which was odd on its own – he had given up only one dinger in his last eight starts.
So, that was weird. But now, here's a little perspective: He ended up giving up just two earned runs in 5⅔ innings and it felt like a bad start, which tells you how impressive he has been.

The Jacksonville Jaguars announced a number of roster moves on Monday, which includes placing rookie linebacker Parker Hughes on injured reserve.
It has not been reported what injury Hughes is working through, but his season is now over.
Hughes played six special teams snaps in the preseason opener against New Orleans. He was competing with Yasir Abdullah and Jalen McLeod for a roster spot.
The Jaguars also made two additions, signing offensive lineman Timothy McKay and linebacker Baylon Spector.
Signing McKay bolsters the offensive line depth, with Chuma Edoga suffering an injury against the Saints. Patrick Mekari and Walker Little have been sidelined as well, along with Cole Van Lanen remaining on the PUP list.
