Question: On how to eliminate explosive plays as a defense
DeMeco Ryans: "To eliminate explosive plays, it starts by simply guys doing their job, being where they're supposed to be. Whether it's coverage, leverage, or being outside, being inside, being on top, where we're supposed to be, how we're rushing, our rush plan, also all that ties in together. We gave up 11 or 12 explosive plays and when you give up that many plays, you're going to give up points. We have to do a much better job of just being where we're supposed to be, finishing how we're supposed to finish."
Q: On trusting the process
Ryans: "You definitely have to trust the process when it just comes to doing what we're supposed to do. The Bills, they made some plays and made some good catches, but when we're not where we're supposed to be, we're going to make it look even better. It always starts with us about just doing the things that you're supposed to do to help you win the game."

The season opener is a game quarterback C.J. Stroud will probably want to forget.
While he had 274 passing yards and two touchdowns, he also had two fumbles, including one on the final drive that doomed the Houston Texans in their opener against the Buffalo Bills.
Stroud is already focusing on turning the page to Week 2 against the Cincinnati Bengals.
"It's part of the NFL," Stroud said. "You have to be able to learn from your mistakes and then go onto the next week and try to get a win. We have a tough Bengals team coming in here. They're really good. We have to be on our P's and Q's, try to win that game. We'll fix our issues by tonight and tomorrow, turn the page and keep moving forward. One thing that DeMeco [Ryans] said in the locker room that I agree with is, we're going to keep our chins high and our chests poked out. We did a lot of positive things, do we wish we won it? Yes. But at the end of the day it's a long season.
"You have to give us a little bit of credit there. I think I second his message with that."

Houston Texans linebacker Henry To'oTo'o suffered a shoulder injury in Sunday's 36-31 loss to the Bills and is expected "to miss some time," coach DeMeco Ryans Monday.
To'oTo'o, who signed a two-year contract extension with the team this offseason, suffered the injury with 2:34 left in the fourth quarter.
When asked whether he expected To'oTo'o to be placed on injured reserve, Ryans said that decision had not been made.
"We'll see," Ryans said. "We haven't made that decision yet, but we'll see how that goes."
To'oTo'o is one of the Texans' best run defenders, and it's likely he could miss several weeks.

Rookies from across the NFL made their debuts in Week 1 of the regular season. One Houston Texans legend, made his debut in a very different lead role.
J.J. Watt, who finished No. 1 in Chron's Top 25 Texans Ranking and current CBS Sports ******* yst, took the No. 1 color commentator role alongside CBS play-by-play announcer Jim Nantz for Sunday's tilt between the Minnesota Vikings and the Green Bay Packers. Watt replaced Tony Romo, of Dallas Cowboys fame, in the top spot after the former quarterback went on indefinite leave following his arrest on suspicion of operating a vehicle while intoxicated in Wisconsin earlier this summer.
Nantz warmly welcomed Watt to the broadcast during the CBS pregame show "NFL Today," and studio host James Brown was collegial in acknowledging the new duo.
"Jim Nantz and J.J. Watt … that rolls right off your tongue," Brown said. "What do you have?"

Palmer was targeted only twice, but his last target from quarterback Josh Allen resulted in a 34-yard touchdown reception with 1:34 remaining in the fourth quarter that lifted the Bills to a 36-31 win at NRG Stadium in Houston.
It had been 680 days since Palmer last scored an a touchdown in an NFL game.
Palmer played four seasons at UT between 2017-20 and caught 99 passes for 1,514 yards and seven touchdowns. The Los Angles Chargers picked Palmer with the 77th overall pick in the third round of the 2021 NFL Draft.
One game into his sixth season in the NFL, Palmer has now caught 205 passes for 2,624 yards and 11 touchdowns. He enjoyed three productive seasons with the Chargers, but has seen his playing time decrease ever since. On the eve of their regular season debut, the Houston Texans have announced another significant injury. Rookie DT Kayden McDonald is apparently suffering from an ankle injury and will begin the regular season on injured reserve. Battle Red Blog's Nickschwager noted McDonald's appearance on the injury report yesterday, but a placement on IR is a new and rather sudden development.

McDonald will now be inactive for the first four games of the 2026 regular season: vs. Buffalo Bills, vs. Cincinnati Bengals, @ Indianapolis Colts, and vs. Dallas Cowboys. He will be eligible to return for Houston's match against the Tennessee ***** ans on October 11th. In the meantime, the Texans are signing DT Jaden Crumedy from the Green Bay Packers practice squad.

Houston Chronicle reporter Jonathan M. Alexander stated following the announcement, "McDonald suffered the injury in practice Wednesday, a league source said. He did not practice Thursday or Friday and wore a protective boot over his foot in the locker room"

The NFL has suspended free agent linebacker Xavier Thomas for the first three weeks of the season, according to the league's personnel notice.
It is unclear why the NFL suspended Thomas.
Thomas, 26, was waived from injured reserve by the 49ers on Aug. 26.
He spent time in the offseason with the Texans before reaching an injury settlement with the team May 20. He signed with the 49ers on Aug. 12.
The Cardinals picked Thomas in the fifth round in 2024, and he played 14 games as a rookie and four last season.

I think the usual stuff of just trying to keep him from working his magic and he's got a lot of it. Obviously, he has the big arm. We've been working a lot on trying to limit explosives and there's different ways those things show up. I think that's a big starting point with their offense and with Josh especially, just his ability to make huge plays in the passing game and the running game, to be honest with you, is where we've got to start."

Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs was rewarded in August with a three-year, $67.5 million contract extension, a deal that made him the highest-paid running back in NFL history as he enters his fourth season. He is one of the core pieces on this offense for the Lions.
Gibbs is primed for a huge season after the Lions traded running back David Montgomery to the Houston Texans in March. As the featured three-down back, it is quite possible that Gibbs can carry the ball more than 300 times in the 2026 NFL season.
Candace Pedraza of Side Lion Report listed five winners and three losers from the offseason as Week 1 of the 2026 NFL season approaches. Gibbs landed on the winners side alongside the rookie class, Aidan Hutchinson, Isaac TeSlaa and the team's undrafted free agents. Pedraza wrote:

The Houston Texans are set to kick off their season at home against Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills.

We have the first official injury report of the season. Probably not something that should make us excited, but here we are, being very Buffalonian in our eagerness to comb through all the videos, team practice photos, and press conferences ahead of the Buffalo Bills' Week 1 matchup with the Houston Texans.
There's been a lot of talk about this year's Bills team being different — from every angle — and that includes how the coaching staff, and medical team, are approaching player health. It is Week 1, and the last thing I want to do is incite panic among a group of fantasy football managers who have been waiting all offseason for this moment. We drafted these teams, talked ourselves into these players and have been waiting for real football to finally get here. The last thing you want to hear before setting your first lineup is somebody telling you to worry about one of the players you drafted.

But think about it this way. There are some legitimate concerns heading into Week 1, and I would much rather know about those concerns now and set my expectations accordingly than find out when the games start. So these are panics, but they are loose panics. We are not burying anybody before the season starts. This is simply about identifying where there may be a little more risk than we anticipated when we drafted these players.
Let's start with Dak Prescott because this one caught my attention immediately. Tyler Smith is going to have surgery on his thumb and is expected to miss 4-6 weeks. Smith is one of the best guards in football, and Dallas is going to open the season against the Giants, Commanders, Ravens and Texans without arguably the best player on its offensive line.
Then, you look at the rest of that offensive line and there are reasons to be concerned. Terence Steele allowed 52 pressures last season, which is not good, and now T.J. Bass is being asked to step into Smith's spot. Dallas has some difficult defensive fronts coming up early, so I understand why people may look at this situation and wonder whether Dak should be downgraded.

On paper, the Dallas Cowboys' offensive line looks largely the same as last year. Tyler Guyton is at left tackle, Tyler Smith is left guard, Cooper Beebe is the center, Tyler Booker is at right guard, and Terence Steele is penciled in at right tackle.
Anyone who remembers what happened last season knows things don't always go according to plan. Four of the five Cowboys starters missed time in 2025, with three of them missing three or more games. And anyone who's been tracking training camp news knows their performances haven't all been sunshine and rainbows. Contingency plans are in the works, and depth options have changed considerably from last year.
The elephant in the room (no, that's not a fat joke) is the struggles of Steele at right tackle. After regressing a bit last year, Steele took a pay cut over the offseason just to stay aboard. Unfortunately, that regression continued into this season and now Steele's starting job is tenuous, at best.
Many will remember that earlier in the offseason Nate Thomas was named as a challenger to Guyton at left tackle. Once camp opened, Guyton, healthy for the first time in a while, had no problems dispatching the competition, prompting Dallas to try Thomas on the right side with Steele.
Things clearly didn't go well for Thomas on the right side either, since he was soon shipped off in a trade with the Houston Texans, but not before the Cowboys added a new tackle to the mix. Broderick Jones, a former first-round pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers, was acquired on August 29 and immediately slotted in to compete with Steele at right tackle.

Players rarely get fined during the preseason, but it does happen. One instance of that came this past week when the NFL fined Cleveland Browns offensive tackle Tytus Howard.
He was fined $12,537 for what they described as unnecessary roughness during the first preseason game against the Chicago Bears. Howard got a 15-yard penalty for tripping on the play he was fined for. Pro Football Talk reported the news of the fine.
Howard is in his first year with the Browns after being traded from the Houston Texans for a fifth-round pick.
He is one piece of an offensive line that has four new starters in 2026. Howard is joined by top draft pick Spencer Fano, who plays the opposite tackle spot. The interior is made up of Teven Jenkins, Zion Johnson, and Elgton Jenkins.

The Arizona Cardinals perhaps will have a sneaky good offense in 2026. They have the skill players with running backs Jeremiyah Love and Tyler Allgeier, receivers Marvin Harrison Jr. and Michael Wilson, and tight end Trey McBride. They are not expected to be good defensively.
As such, it is no surprise that the Cardinals do not make the NFL.com list of the top 10 defenses entering 2026.

In ESPN's most recent projections for who will be the top 100 players in the NFL this season, there are five Houston Texans players who made the list. Four of them were on defense: defensive ends Will Anderson and Danielle Hunter, as well as cornerbacks Derek Stingley and Kamari Lassiter.
Houston's one player on offense who made the list was wide receiver Nico Collins.
The Texans' defense only got better in the offseason with the addition of Jadeveon Clowney. Anderson had 20 tackles for loss, including 12 sacks, as well as three forced fumbles last season, and with the trio of Anderson, Hunter and Clowney, he could hit those numbers again this season, as the entire defensive line will be a handful for opposing offensive lines.
